  • This is a rare interview with Lars
Ulrich and Cliff Burton about recording Master of Puppets. This interview was released
on picture disc in the mid '80s and according to the number
printed on one side of the record there were only 2,500 pressed and some of
those may not have survived all those decades. It's insightful
because they explain what inspired them to write the songs, how
they approached pre-production and who was originally supposed
to produce Master of Puppets (Geddy Lee). There are references to One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rambo, Mutt Lang and of course H.P.
Lovecraft. I've looked for this interview on the internet for years
but I was never able to find it. The picture disc itself is one of
my most prized possessions because not only is it a rare interview,
the record sleeve is also autographed by the members of Metallica
including Cliff Burton! The audio clips slightly in some places
because of it's transfer to cassette and I made an effort to show
pictures of the band and their records from around that time (some from a little before)
that you don't see everyday. I'm assuming the interview was conducted
in Denmark although I can at least narrow it down to being somewhere
in Scandinavia judging from the interviewer's accent. Actually I think it was conducted there at Sweet Silence Studios. A lot of the
questions from the interviewer were edited out for the sake of saving
time on the record but you can figure out what the questions were
based on Lars' and Cliff's answers. So here it is, a rare interview of
Lars & Cliff about recording Master of Puppets from around '85-'86!

It's really something, Lightning and Puppets both have that vibe because they were recorded in Denmark with Cliff. Funny story, there's controversy surrounding Thing about tuning of the guitars. I still say, other than Cliff Metallica didn't tune their guitars down 'til the Black Album.

I think its funny because the way they describe how they do the songs and the fact there was no pressure from the label to do anything other than give them 8 songs. I honestly believe the black album and load and even st anger were all the same. They did what they wanted to do it had nothing to do with the label telling them anything or trying to do what others wanted. They wanted to be the biggest band in the world from very early on and they wanted to do it their way and that is exactly what they did. They never sold out in any decade. People who say so or say their stylistic changes would never happen with cliff still around those people honestly don't have a clue what they're talking about. Cliffs influence has alot to do with them going in a different direction. He had the broadest musical taste of all the members including classical music so I'm not sure why everyone thinks cliff was a thrash only guy that "would never allow them to do load" it's just stupid.

have you ever tried a grilled shrimp taco? in my opinion, there's nothing better. especially with sauteed tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. basically if you have all the same stuff with fajitas, except substitute beef or chicken with grilled shrimp. know what i'm saying?

I agree - Burton opened their minds to different genres and he 100% spearheaded Metallica to explore areas in metal that their peers were too scared (or unable) to do.
I just feel Burton would have been been disgusted by the antics - particularly in the Load era, up until Hetfield went to rehab. It’s hard to say, because you just never know how someone’s personality evolves, especially when success and money is thrown into the mix. Who knows?
But I agree- I don’t think Metallica ever sold out either. I firmly believe they always did what they wanted to do. And they still do.

I wish Metallica would have waited till they were older to make load and reload . A few more albums similar to mop or the black album would have been cool. I love death Magnetic and hard wired is just ok. I agree with everything you said too.

@@shred9475 Sure, you can downplay him, but you could downplay anyone that way. You could also say "Kirk did nothing but write a couple riffs and steal Dave's solos." There's just no denying Metallica would be where they are or write the songs they've written if it weren't for Lars. I'd advise you to do some more research into what he's contributed to the band than keep repeating what your friends told you 20 years ago.
