      Agree with first comment plus…
      Hidden yards is killing the Ravens too. The Steelers wanted them to return the ball from kickoffs. Only once can I recall the return making it back to the 30 and even then I think it got taken back 10 yards for a block in the back. They’re constantly starting drives from within their own 30 if not their own 20. Add on the Oline penalties and the ravens have to out gain their opponent by ~100 yards a game OR win the turnover battle. Against a good defence like the Steelers that’s tough.

    • @andrewhanson5942
      @andrewhanson5942 2 дня назад

      @@JunctionWatcher I think that as we get more experience and history on the new kickoff rule you might see special teams coaches feel more comfortable kicking the ball down to the 0 - 5 yard line and the coverage team keeping the returner from getting even to the 20. So far I think the head coaches are just trying to keep another variable out of the game, as they are afraid of a game breaking 99 yard return.

  • @cwestrephx
    @cwestrephx 3 дня назад +2

    Man, if there's a guy who deserves the benefit of the doubt, it's Tucker for all the killer kicks he's made over his career. But he's been bad enough that he's pulling them out of the division lead in a year where Lamar Jackson is looking likely to run away with MVP, and Derrick Henry could win OPOY alongside him. It's not a good look.
    If you want to bury him, you could say he's had a downward trend the last 3 years, with even 2 years ago being the lowest completion percentage since his 3rd year in the league. But I'm not ready to do that yet. I don't know if it'd hurt his confidence more, but maybe you can say he's injured and give him the rest of the year and off-season to figure out and correct whatever is wrong. Most NFLers are dealing with some sort of nagging injury a lot of the time, and I'd imagine that's even true for kickers, so coming up with something shouldn't be hard. That could also help public perception of him if you say he's been battling that injury most of the year.
    But that's probably dependent on finding another kicker who's better than Tucker has been this year, and given how many teams are using backup kickers at this point, I don't know what the remaining talent pool is. Although those backup kickers seem to be mostly handling business, so that bodes well.

    • @wrkahl
      @wrkahl 3 дня назад +1

      Yes, Tucker could have won them the game yesterday, but it's the 92 penalties, more than eight PER GAME and ten more than the next most penalized team, that are killing them this season. The defense came around yesterday but it has been a liability during crucial games also.

    He always takes such an aggressive angle and lean while he has been awesome for years does that translate well when you get older. Too early to tell I think but the older kickers with longevity have usually had a smooth simple kick. You don't hit from 66 though being simple! Different sport but Tiger Woods like. That swing was so unique and powerful in 20's/30's but tough to translate when 40.

    4 misses isn't the worst thing. It's when he starts missing badly on field goals under 30 yards that you should worry. And great kickers often have very long careers, so I doubt the Ravens would be quick to pull the plug on his time in Baltimore just yet.

    If a field goal kicker “loses the game” then the team failed to secure a win. Blaming the kicker is manchild nonsense. Like the posturing of all the coaches shaking their heads like their offense didn’t fail to make a third down conversion and get further down the field.

    • @jcsbck

      But that's nonsense.
      Teams play calling takes field goals into account. They would just go for it on 4th down if kickers didn't exist
      Teams don't score a TD on the last drive of the game not because they can't, but because is strategic to run the clock and kick the FG.

    Looking at the stats table you showed at 1:35 - it actually isn't that bad. Yeah, he's currently at his lowest percentage ever, but it's entirely due to misses from long range. He was actually worse last year from 50+ than he has been so far this year (and comparably bad in 2014 and 2015), it's just he kicked more FGs from shorter range in those years. He's not performing at the elite level that he often has in the past, but there's still plenty of games left for him to avoid this being his worst year ever.

    • @jcsbck
      @jcsbck 3 дня назад

      But realistically, there's no difference between a 45 yard FG and a 50 yard FG for kickers in 2024
      55+ is when it gets different.

  • @greghmn
    @greghmn 3 дня назад

    They're all missing for the exact same reason to the same degree. Something something Tyler Bass on Opposite Day. His current mechanics are the manifestation of precision without accuracy. A single tweak, however slight, could fix all of this. Obviously, I'm not a kicking coach, so I can't tell you what he'd need to do, but even just aiming a bit to the right might fix the problem in the short term. For something more sustainable, the technology to analyze and alter mechanics to get the optimal rotation and placement exists; we've seen it in baseball (and, I'm guessing, probably golf) for years now. It's just a matter of unlearning whatever habit created this change. There's so much potential money in this that *someone* has to have the answers. Hell, it's probably down to an exact science, already adapted for the idiosyncracies of placekicking.
