I take a family touring holiday and cover 1,150 miles at a cost of UNDER £50 in charging! Not the usual thing you expect of a Porsche but welcome to electric car motoring! The key is a hotel with charging facilities so only the travel to and from is with paid publich electric car charging networks.
See also how the Porsche handles all sorts of driving conditions including driving through flooded roads...
Great comfortable cruiser.
B road fun handling
Spacious family grand tourer

Great to hear real world trips and the exciting water crossing. No doubt the folks pushing the Ford must have been amazed seeing a sports car cross the water no issues.
Cool hearing the awesome places to visit when in the UK.
This is brilliant!!! One of the benefits of EVs is absolutely THAT no air intake! I used to put my PHEV into electric mode whilst going through flood water. Now with my EV. I don’t think I have ever had flood water worries… Ps The Instavolt chargers in Oxfordshire have been a massive hit! I’d recommend them for their reliability and their ease of use.
I’m still sceptical about EV’s and the charging infrastructure but your content is really making me think differently. Keep up the fantastic content 👍
That’s good. It’s not always 100% perfect yet but it’s still sooo much better than driving fossil cars. They literally do feel like dinosaurs after driving EV.
So these videos may seem mundane to some but you’ve hit the nail on the head in that I hope they show real world scenarios and how it all worked out.
Yes. I’ve had my Ioniq 5 three weeks. No problems charging. Absolutely no going back - it’s the future.
@@RSEV indeed. Been driving EV for 4 years now and definitely not going back. So much better in many ways.
It can still be frustrating, I was at the Milton Keynes Hub. 3 not working, some in use and others taken but shuttle vans. The infrastructure is still a huge issue and needs to be addressed.
The A82 south from Inverness, down through the Great Glen along the edges of Loch Ness, past Ben Nevis, through Fort William, through the stunning Glen Coe area, through the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs national park, and down into Glasgow - my vote for the best driving and scenic road in the UK
Love your Porsche Taycan 😃
Yay! A fellow Bournemouthian - need to keep an eye for that Taycan :)
Very informative vid. Appreciate the cost breakdown of charging 👍🏻
Your dog " Daniel " 😆 🤣 😄 funny
Love this video. I went with my family upto the lake district (Carlisle area) in my Mums Nissan Leaf from the south of the country. 5 charging stops later we made it 😅 No more than £7 ish a charge using the old Ecotricity chargers.
We traveled to Boca Chica to see the starshing get built. & we got the S dual motor fsd last Christmas 🎄 😎 still have the cybertruck tri motor or 4 motor fsd on order, i got lots of solar & backup battery system to charge them both. i just bought more TSLA!!
I saw you driving past me going the other way whilst you were on this road trip. It made my day. It defiantly stands out. Love the videos
👋🏻 belated hi!
Yeah I use the destination charger filter. And I write in the booking that I selected their hotel because the have chargers. If they have the time I usually have a chat and say that I wouldn’t mind paying for it and If I could reserve a charger or a plug, I would happily do that and even pay for it. It would be easier if I know that I can arrive on empty battery and charge a bit during the night.
I’d rather want many slower chargers on destinations than a few fast.
Cheers.
Another great video - well done!!
Great vid. During half term I did the Nc500 in a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range. In total I did about 1500 miles over a few days, really enjoyed it and had zero range anxiety.
Nc500 is on my list of “to do”!
Will be an epic one.
But then I want to race to lands end
@@RSEV looking forward to watching it when it happens :)
I did it in a diesel camper van, luxury and a 650 mile range, even less range anxiety. There are plenty of fuel stations but north of Inverness there are zero Tesla superchargers, meaning relying on ultra unreliable hit and miss charge places Scotland,
zero range anxiety ?
I want to do the same in my Model S 75D
@@stevezodiac491 oh, think of the diesel pollution. Seriously though, the CPS chargers are ok, John O groats one is Gridserve. Some hotels have destination chargers too, yes zero range anxiety if you plan your trip
Excellent information 👌
I've ordered an i4 M50 through work, but really ultimately would love a Taycan.
The porsche is considerably more, but is doable given salary sacrifice lease.
4p / mile in elec is impressive.
Love the video !!
I've noticed over the last year public chargers at key areas are getting seriously busy. To the point that charging companies are struggling to keep up with the number of charging bays required to meet demand. I'm not sure some of the expansions are good enough. On the key locations 20-25 units is probably the minimum needed now, with more required as more EV's hit the road.
Agreed - charger network expansion is struggling to keep up to the EV ownership expansion...
They need an estimated 450,000 chargers by 2030 and we have 26,000 I can’t see them meeting that.
@@garrycroft4215 The key, as Richard says, is destination chargers. If you know there's a charger available at your destination then you don't mind running low to get there. Problem is that hotels, guest houses and B&Bs have to fund it themselves and many are currently holding off. Charging at your destination is much better than charging on the road.
@@evornotev7794 I agree but Blackpool has a massive problem of almost no chargers. Even The many large supermarkets don’t have them. They are not short of infrastructure or electricity having the illuminations and an electric tramway. They could easily support the biggest charging hub in the country. One day maybe 🤞
@@garrycroft4215 Good point well made. And that long traffic queue to view the illuminations would be even better without fossil fuel pollution and of course the noise of engines. It's an eye opener to sit in a queue of electric cars as I did getting into The Fully Charged Show - so quiet and clean air to breathe as well. Queueing was almost a pleasant experience! as you say, one day....
The unexpected 'gainers' from 'net zero' Coffee shops!
driving roads well A686 from Penrith over hartside to Alston then so many options maybe Middleton Teasdale then Brough then options all through Yorkshire getting over to Reeth
I loved the video ! I would like if I could, take a trip like this on the beaches of Brazil! you would be surprised by the natural beauty and the culture! thanks
Rio Verde - GO - Brasil
Love the content, just took delivery of my 1st electric car and while it's not perfect it suits my lifestyle better than traditional ICE cars. As the infrastructure grows it'll get easier still
Super info.
Cool wrap!
Great video.
Love road trips in our Model 3 with family. Car has so much luggage space, wife and daughter love the car. Makes long journeys so easy, relaxing as well as cheap. Went to St Ives half term and up to Blackpool this Saturday for pleasure Beach and lights.
Model 3 is hard one to beat for range and ease of charging of course. We run one in the business.
Did you have to queue in traffic for hours for the Blackpool lights?
@@RSEV Yes it's a fantastic car. It's this coming Saturday we're off to Blackpool so fingers crossed should be over busy 🤞
This is the kind of enthusiasm that will, hopefully, convert more people to electric cars. Just taken first step with a Fiat 500e and delighted with it! Next year a model 3SR is arriving. Sad though that our, less than bright, government has decided to cut the help to get people to make the change! Sheer madness!!
Dogs with human names ❤️
Hey Richard looked like you were exactly on my doorstep maybe 2 miles away when you went to bowness!
My dad just got his cross turismo and absolutely loves it, and he was a big skeptic
i live in Manchester and work in Poole now and then, i enjoyed the route you took home using tha A34.
I was there too in my Model 3… didn’t see you 😜. Love the Lakes…
brilliant
I'm amazed that you managed to get to the Lake District with your geographical knowledge Richard.....
Your charging stop at Macclesfield was actually at Wrightington, near Wigan, only a 50 mile discrepancy 😂.
Glad you and your family had an enjoyable break, albeit with such inclemant weather.
Definitely not Macclesfield, which is only famous for not having ANY rapid chargers!!
Yeah I knew when I said it that it was wrong 😂🤦♂️💁♂️
I had to make the map overlay to correct it because of that!
My favorite car of the fleet
Lovely video. Please try and get your hands on the EQE and lets see how it performs in real world scenarios… range and comfort.
Saw you driving around Lancaster the other week. There are quite a few public chargers in the City Council car parks now.
Great vid, as usual. Thanks.
I'm already a convert, Model 3 on order.
I carried out a lot of research before taking the decision but I found no information in one area, security. What are the statistics regarding stolen vehicles, EV's versus ICE cars? Does anyone have any information? 🖖
Richard, when you drove the Moors did you notice the bus stops but not one house to be seen? 😂 A good road trip for twisty roads are around Mt. Snowdon. Enjoyed the video the Lake District and Blackpool are local trips for me (Liverpool). Q: when you go on the long trips do you plan where you are going to stop or because you have been EV for six years you know where the best chargers are? Also any road trips planned for abroad?
The lake district is amazing. Richard did you try the electric boats on windermere?
Wondering what you think of the new design for the "iconic British EV charger point" and also now that Tesla is opening up super chargers in other countries to all makes of vehicles what your input is on standardization of charging point location in both bays and on vehicles.
Nice one. Particularly reassuring about the flooded roads.
If you're in the Lakes again, do all the passes - Hardknott (Mediobogdum Roman fort!) & Wrynose are particular favourites, Kirkstone, Honister (slate mine).
Hardknott was due after stopping for coffee in coniston but we had to abandon that day 😔
Managed some of the other great roads though 👌
spodzone totally agree 👍
@@RSEV I spent quite a few autumn holidays trundling around the Lakes with my Dad in formative years. Next time, maybe - the view from the other side of Mediobogdum is worth a shot :)
Did you add the Keswick charge cost?
I saw the car at Booths at half term as it was full but managed to charge my e-Niro.
Ive got a taycan cross tourismo 4s on order and it comes in April - we have a tesla M3 too which we are swapping for a Y - so pretty much the same set up as you. I might pick your brains on long distance driving as we’ve done loads in the Tesla, but I am nervous with the porsche as it doesn’t have access to the Tesla network which is fab. I always seem to perceive that non tesla chargers are hard to use, scarce and frequently out of action. Whereas tesla chargers are dependable and easy to use. Is the taycan experience as easy as chargers are now coming in more and more? Or is tesla still a way better experience?
I love yer dirty wrap on the Porker….
What impact does the Rapid charging have on the battery? Do you have any data on the Porsche battery.
Hi, does your car have any of the additional onboard chargers?
The cost for coffee must have been astronomical on this trip!
Great video but your charging costs seemed very low considering what chargers cost per kWh these days. Sessions under a tenner you can’t have put hardly anything in 🤔
And were you just lucky being able to find an empty charger at the hotel 🙂👍
Flooded roads I believe will be enjoyable in upcoming GMC HUMMER EV - it can ford water up till almost 1.2 meter deep. That is obviously ignoring the complain about even Taycan being too wide for British roads.
👍
Great video. It might be worth checking the title of the video for errors.
“the the”?
Done. I did say we were busy! It’s manic right now! Amended now of course
£50 for charging
£20(?) for refreshments.
£23,000 for (just) the extras.
Sounds about right 😂
Just wonder what would have happened at the hotel if there were more than 2 ev staying? I would imagine guests leave overnight and only unplug when leaving.
feels like looking at CGI of the car. i guess we rarely see an expensive car with so much dirt.
What is the most miles you have seen on 1 year old ev? I have managed to do 60k miles in my kona last year.
Blimey, I didn't realise you had a Submarine for a company transport!
It did very well but to be honest, don't you miss spending all your money on Petrol or Diesel vehicles?
I'm really interesting in EV cars but the saving in fueling them is usually cancelled out by the much higher purchase cost, expecially as most only keep their car for 3 years and then trade up for a new model, that would only become more common as owning an old vehicle with a battery is likely to cost thousands to replace when they degrade. Finding the right balance is going to be difficult to actually realise any savings if you do not travel many miles per year.
Yes, a lot of people don’t include the cost of depreciation in their mileage costs.
Try the North Coast 500?…
to be honest. the cost is almost the same as my prius. the only thing going for a EV for road trip is for it's dynamics so i can take it to some fun roads further away. Road trip for ev is not that enticing.
hi Richard. I think your daughter is about the same age as mine. On a CT 4S test drive, she found the headrest uncomfortable as it pushed her head forward a bit. Back at the dealership we tried removing it and that seemed much better but not sure what it will be like on long journeys. Would appreciate your thoughts / experience. (By the way, still placed the order for the CT so may be in touch next June to sell my MS. Thanks.
Hi Andrew, please don’t remove the headrest. It’s there to protect your neck from breaking in the event of an accident.
Tesla owners never fail to display arrogance/hypocrisy regarding charging their vehicles, in particular with the universal access to other manufacturers trial currently under way in the Netherlands.
Always see a Tesla on Instavolt and other networks, taking up stall space but unwilling to reciprocate - great example of negative human behaviour.
Trust you Richard - time off from driving long distances and what do you do? 😂
🤦♂️ I know…. But I love driving
The interior seems to be so superior to a Tesla…
Is that the case ? May I ask whether you could kindly compare a base Taycan with a model Y P ?
I own a model 3 2021, sat in a taycan cross turismo and it's jaw dropping to me how much better the taycan feels. My model 3 is nice, but the taycan is solid.
How much is it?
What would it cost if free charging was not available and you had to rely on the charging network?
Well I did rely on the charging network and it cost £46
If you mean I had to pay for hotel charging too, add about another £30-£40 I guess if they were to charge me at commercial rates… roughly speaking
@@RSEV Thankyou for your reply Richard, my next car will be an ev so the worst case cenario is very helpful.
Any plans to review the MG ZS EV Long Range?
I’d like to. Just have not had one yet…
RS = Royal Submarine
Are you watching Shmee 150 ? 😂 Don’t try this in a Honda E Especially to Blackpool with 18 million visitors per year and only One 50 kwh rapid charger. 😬
No. Him and his Taycan click bait is hard to watch
360p gang!
I would love an EV but as they are still way overpriced compared to an ICE i dont see the change happening fast and it will be a playground for the wealthy. I am a single and on the UK average salary and a home owner, there is no way i can afford the like of the IQ5, EV6 or even a Nero 4+ and forget tesla's 56K for the Y WTF. The reason for those examples is they are the only cars i can actually fit in and be comfortable as car interiors have gotten smaller in the last 10 yrs :( The legacy car makers need to make a sub 25k car that has large battery and large interior.
Spend £84000 to only pay £50 fuel bill on a trip ? You didn't go to school with Dianne Abbott did you ?
You not need to make tours of England 🏴!you need to show as the car not the weather
>....
>"best I can do is 360p"
Same here.
The video has just been uploaded - give it some time and a higher quality version will be available.
Takes a while to go full res on RUclips I’m afraid. Not my fault 💁♂️
Go and take Shmee for a drive…….. he’s still a slight Luddite!
0:04 Please stop calling it “Porsh”! Please pronounce it as “Por-Shuh”
Nope. The model S is. Next pointless video please 👍🏻
I’ll agree the model S is hard to beat. Done many a video showing how much I love it.
But I’ll work on the next pointless video so stay subscribed huh?
@@RSEV yeah cause i like you and I like your channel 🤷🏻♂️ just thought this was pointless. Want a long distance EV with insane charging network. There’s no competition and won’t be for a long time.
@@madmike6266 well rumors would indicate that Tesla is opening their network..
@@christianolsen9781 rumours also state that the earth is flat. Bullshit gets spoken everyday 🤷🏻♂️
@@madmike6266 it’s not a rumour, it’s the EU legislating and forcing Tesla to open up to all cars. Trial now taking place in Holland.
Clever, your Porshe Warranty will be VOID now as damage to electrics and water condensation corrosion will be evident in months to come. Wouldn't want to buy this car in the future. Stupid thing to do with an EV. water damage will be evident in the future !!
Very poor video ,too bad to watch on my 78" screen
RUclips puts out low Res video as soon it goes live & takes time before 1080 & above are available.
