  • I really think that it's worth talking about this film since it's quite important to support when really good movies are made by smaller studios. I also think it's really cool.

“King of the Monsters took iconic Godzilla monsters like Ro-*tan* [what?], Mothra, and King Ghidorah and turned them into generic action figures for Godzilla to decimate.”
…You mean like how they’ve been in numerous movies for decades now?

One of the best movies i´ve seen in a while. The part when Norico was in the train hanging on for life and i saw the water under her, i really wanted her to let go and live. Something that hollywood cant make me feel since i dont care for the characters. And the message minus one has is amazing, choose to live not just for the ones you love but also for yourself. 9.5 movie

I'll say this. I'll love Reiwa Godzilla. I love Shin Gojira and MinusGoji because they really do harken back to Godzilla being a force of nature.
But I also love Legendary's Godzilla because they bring Godzilla's first era back in a ways. Showa, where it's mostly monsters fighting each other. I as a fan of Godzilla LOVE both and all of them ARE Godzilla in the end. The serious and thought provoking, as well as the big monster battle romps.

"The fake out death" was maybe a Pyrrhic victory because the woman was infected by a regenerative Godzilla cell, which is why she survived in the first place. It sets up perhaps an even darker sequel.

You should totally get into the franchise, especially the movies with a serious and grounded tone (the more silly and campy movies aren’t that great)

GODZILLA is the protector of the Earth.
GOJIRA is the destroyer of nature, humanity's own creation.
Beautiful sentence, felt like I should share it here. Not my own, inspired by someone else.
Also Minus One is the best movie in a long while. It remained so WONDERFUL in an ever-growing sea of horrendous movies.

  • @Bobzilla2023

2:53 ok as a certified Goji fan. That kinda feel like a lie. Monsterverse Godzilla has personality and is treated as more of a neutral force of nature in the movies. He doesn’t care who he has to crush or get past he’s on a mission to keep the earth in balance no matter what, even at the expense of innocent people.
Again tho, -1 Godzilla is still better imo. Godzilla is best as a villain.
But the trashing of the Monsterverse for arbitrary reasons gets old real fast in this review. That and the last comment about “higher expectations” dude. Godzilla can be both serious but campy fun at the same time.
All that being said, I loved your review I agree to an extent on many things and Godzilla is a character worth being ranked as villain of the year.

MV Godzilla in my eyes is a incredibly inconsistent character that goes from a animalistic being in the first movie to a sort of guardian figure in KOTM to just an asshole with a superiority complex in GVK.
I dislike almost all of MV (Save for the exceptions of G14 which i actually quite like and KSI which i find to be a overall decent movie) but i also don't care if someone likes them or not. What's really annoying is the almost toxic positivity that the community seems to have, with people who dislike the franchise often being labelled as hating fun or other negative terms and it's honestly made me roll my eyes whenever i see someone criticizing the movies only for a MV fan to come in and try defending them.

@@Ailaaaaaaa Absolutely, most of the MV fans cant take critique from ohter people and then tend to go defensive. There is flaws in the MV but life moves on

Yeah if you dont like the mv thats fine with me, the only problem i have is people who think he should only be a villain, even in the original, the second godzilla in raids again was just as much as an asshole as the first, then he started dropkicking giant bugs and flying after airborne shits, hes a flexable character and i love both sides of him, and my preferred version is monsterverse godzilla since hes a mix of both. Anyways, just as long as you understand the character, any opinion is valid.

I loved this movie, it was the first Godzilla movie where I was genuinely upset when Godzilla was on screen. It was so refreshing seeing a monster movie when i actually care for the main characters. The main thing I dislike about the monsterverse movies is the human scenes. Since I am never connected with them I tend to zone out until the next fight. In Minus One I enjoyed the entire film! I hope another Godzilla film like Minus One comes out again.

As a lifelong fan of Godzilla, I must say that while I understand the sentiment against the Monsterverse films because of tangential association with _other_ Hollywood slop (MCU in particular), as well as the comparison between that and Minus One, I'm not missing GxK New Empire. You said it yourself, sometimes Godzilla is a hero, but it actually goes way deeper than that. While the serious side of Godzilla and his roots will always be special, the sillier stuff is the _vast_ majority of the franchise. Not only that, the Monsterverse stuff harkens back to the mid-late 60's films and the 70's films in particular, which are some of my favorite ones. And the Monsterverse films are executed quite well and on-brand for what they are.
I have a problem with the push against the Monsterverse that people seem to want to do because of Minus One. There seems to be a misconception that these films are the same crap as the other Hollywood shit. They are not. They are not meant to be taken seriously. They are the cheesy and silly side of the franchise amped up to 11 with effects and designs that the old films wish they could've had. They are an homage to that era, and a damn good one, at that.
There _also_ seems to be a misconception that ignoring the silly films will get more serious ones made. This misconception comes from the same people who readily admit that without the sillier stuff here, Japan wouldn't have started making the newer serious stuff like Shin and Minus One. The continued output of that side depends on the continued success on the sillier stuff over here.
The biggest misconception, though, is that the Monsterverse is Hollywood. It is _not_ Hollywood. Warner Bros. only distributes. The rights are with Legendary, which is _not_ a Hollywood company, and they produce the Monsterverse films with guidance from Toho. They work together to bring us the Monsterverse, and the success of the Monsterverse directly supports Toho and furthers the franchise as a whole.
If people cut off the Monsterverse because Minus One was so good, Toho will be deincentivized to continue making more Godzilla stuff as a whole. You cannot have one without the other. That is the nature of the franchise, and it has been for decades.

Reviewers Prasing Minus One while not shitting on the Monsterverse challenge impossible. Not liking the Monsterverse is fine but it's really disingenerus to say American took Japan's monsters and made them action figures when they've done that sort of thing since the 60's

Best movie I saw last year, but I hated the cop-out hospital scene at the end. It was a goofy backpedal that didn’t belong in such a serious movie, plus it undermined all the drama of the third act as well as the stakes and Godzilla’s threat level

NO NO NO, TOHO IS NOT A SMALL STUDIO!!! TOHO IS LIKE THE MARVEL OF JAPAN! Also, you're right about Toho knowing what works with Godzilla, they know that both action based Godzilla and grounded based Godzilla are needed for the franchise to live for another 70 years. The Monsterverse's biggest issue is the plot and human characters, this is most evident in Godzilla vs Kong in my opinion. but the ideas themselves are very interesting since the hollow earth has TONS of potential. But hey, it's also because of the fans pressuring writers to the movies more about action instead of focusing on the story, this is pretty evident with the origin of the Monsterverse being more grounded. Overall, this review is good, but I do wish that you would have touched a bit more about the positives of the Monsterverse since nowadays, people still appear to be very hype about the new movie.

Good vid, but we don't watch sporting events for the character development of the players. We watch it for the epic saves, good teamwork, and fun action. In the same way we can enjoy legendary's godzilla franchise. I think trashing it because it doesn't meet your personal preferences in movies is a bit of a weak take. Of course the video is yours and you can share your opinions just like anyone else, but there's a difference between communicating your personal preferences and trying to objectively trash a movie for flaws you personally create for it.

Agrea for the most part but i disagree in some points.Godzilla has become the most versatile figure in media he can be a allegory on nukes or wtv current problems we have and be its manifestation and we can also have his goofy fun side of just monsters fighting other monsters. That's why he's still remembered and iconic to this day and why he still has movies. Many people who have reviewed minus one don't seem to understand or get why he's been going so far or what the actual fans enjoy the franchise and we can have both so this blind hate for the monster verse or showah erah of movies needs to stop you don't understand what the series is.Takashi Yamazaki the person that made the "best godzilla film" says he loves the monsterverse and wants to make a sequel to minus one with another monster for godzilla to fight or are we not gonna mention that? In the end like i said we can have both and all of these "fans" and reviewers that don't understand what godzilla is nowadays shouldn't really talk about it cause they clearly don't understand.
