0:20 is a really underrated scene, I remember it made me tear up the first time I watched the movie. That minute of him laughing/crying could be its own compelling short film.
2:51 is the most saddest joker laugh. you could feel his sadness and sorrow, as his life couldn't get any worse as his entire life all time been treated like unwanted puppies. All it take is read his mother records and it ruin him in one day
That scene is so excruciating. So much pain in his life and he can’t even cry. When he inhales it sounds like he’s crying, but when he wants to cry out it comes out as laughter. It makes one feel so terribly bad for Arthur. Incredible job by Joaquin Phoenix.
They are all so different in what they convey!! Pained depression, demonic amusement, malice, condescension, or derisiveness; and of course good humor. Laughter is so universal!!
This actor can truly simulate *differences* in: Laughing when Arthur *is happy, excited, or finds something funny* Laughing when Arthur is *neutral, relaxed or comfortable* Laughing when Arthur is *terrified, disturbed or afraid* and Laughing when Arthur is *hurt, depressed or going through trauma.*
3:38 I don't know why but this laugh immediately sent chills down my body, something only two other performers have done playing the Joker: Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger. Joaquin is the best interpretation of the madman to date.
2:51 is the most depressing laugh for me. He forcefully wants to cry after all the pain he went through but his disorder kicks in every time he tries to. If there was any movie that made me completely rooted and sympathetic for a villain, this is it.
i like that joaquin has a unique laugh that can you can say "oh it's the joker" even not as sinister as hamill like we used to, then in 1:17 i was like---- 😮🤯
My sister has Chronic Schizophrenia and Depression. Seeing a person laugh and cry at the same time is a very sad thing to witness especially if it's your family member. Life can be so painful.
@@scaot4810 I think they said that because, just watch how Arthur laughs like trying to hide his anger and then immediately stops when no one's with him, probably being a mocking laugh 😳
what i like about his performance, especially as he does the laughing scenes, *especially* the later scenes, is that it gives you the question: "is he laughing or crying?" and the fact that you can't tell which is so good. he really deserves that oscar. :)
Joaquin is beyond superb. His laugher could easily be interpreted as cryIng. I find it so amazing how the sound we make at the extremes of joy or pain sound so similar. A brilliant film/character study that makes you question Joker within yourself; and learn to know the boundaries.
Joaquin laughs in 4 different distinct ways during the movie 1) PBA laughter, gets worse when becoming anxious or stressed 2) forced laugh, usually comes out when in public or when he "deems" it suitable 3) crying laugh, dude is straight up having a tearful and he's laughing 4) real laugh, shown when something (probably really fucked up) actually gets to his humor
1:18 SO ICONIC. (The laugh of an entire generation, of our era) Mad crazy, mad evil and the how he ends it in a dry and serious way, letting the viewer see the mental health issues within the soul of the character he's playing just like a Salvador Dalí painting, so dramatic and satisfying at the same time but at the end pure art in a very unique way.
This is so awesome..laughter is the best medicine. One of the best laughs around. I have totally laughed a time or too like this after months or years not getting a joke. So satisfying to let out.
I've never seen the movie, but within the first minute of this video, I almost feel sorry for Arthur Fleck. His laugh sounds sad and painful, as if he's trying his hardest not to cry. It almost hurts to watch.
That opening scene where he's laughing uncontrollably in the therapist's office is just chilling. As soon as I saw that shit I knew this movie was going to be next level...
Its literally crying outloud but no one ever gets him. His pain, his trauma, his lack of happiness. And thats what most of people do. We tend to ignore and look away from someone's pain
The sad thing is, his laughter is not a sign of happiness. You can hear the pain in his laugh and it looks like he really wants to stop but he is not able
What I like about in this iteration of one of Batman’s archenemies is that instead of the laughing that sounds insane, Phoenix manages to make the character’s bouts of insane laughter painful and forced; a way to make us sympathise with the character even more.
To me before he embraces the joker identity and the laugh, he was in so much pain. Trying to stop the uncontrollable laughter, like in the bus and train. The breaking point was when he read his file to being made fun of.
His laugh is just so painful, Joaquin really deserved the Oscar he recieved.
Absolutely right!!!!!!
He got what he fuckin deserves
Painful laugh, the first joker before bruce being batman, he is the criminal joker (one of the three jokers)

The first example is such a great shot conveying Arthur’s turmoil. I love it, especially when he’s forcing a smile as a tear goes down
Every time he laughs you expect him to burst out crying, but he never does, it really shows how caged his emotions are
