As a student my iPad Pro is great. However, it is a supplement device. I use it probably 75% of the time and it’s my day-to-day driver for taking notes in class, studying, RUclips, etc etc. But if I could only have one device it would definitely be my MBP. Multi-tasking is just too cumbersome on the iPad whereas I can have three separate word documents, four safari windows, two PDFs, and whatever else I need open all at the same time on the MBP. It’s just too difficult on the iPad to do that... plus some things simply don’t work on the iPad (certain etextbook websites, some online homework sites, programs for taking online proctored exams, etc etc.) While I use the iPad way more than my MBP, the bottom line is that I can use a MacBook as my only device - can’t do that with an iPad.

All extremely valid points. I’ve been able to transition to iPad only. However, my work needs are pretty simple. Add in the always connected unlimited data, my MacBook collects dust. But again, my needs are not complex.

The combination of an IPad and Mac is great. When I’m on the road, my iPad is great to have, I don’t miss my Mac. When I’m at home, I use both my IMac and IPads.

I use iMac+iPad+Jump Desktop. Maximum productivity when at home (home office), maximum portability and no productivity degradation when on the go. I don't even look back to owning a MacBook.

    • @harrytsang1501

This exactly. An iPad is the perfect device for people who already have a desktop and don’t want to get an expensive laptop for same functions. You don’t even need to be into the Apple ecosystem, it is general purpose enough to adapt to your other devices when needed.
I use my desktop at home when I can be at a desk, the iPad is for bedside reading and everything else on the go. I do have a laptop that I do not find myself using it much, if at all.
Edit:The only time my laptop gets more love is when I go on month-long trips then a laptop offers a nicer environment at an airbnb than just an iPad.

    • @mendodave
      @mendodave 3 года назад +1

Pretty much the same here. The Mac is the “Mother Ship” so to speak. It offers a windowed environment and more flexibility that the iPad can’t match, but the iPad will do 90% of the stuff that I do on the Mac and it’s way more portable, more portable than a laptop even. So I end up using it at least 80% of the time.

I think if you use your iPad 80% of the time and your Mac 20% of the time, you’ve effectively switched. I use my Mac less than 10% of the time now because I only need it for a few things. My biggest wish for my iPad Pro is extended desktop to a monitor.

    • @angelo_villones
      @angelo_villones 3 года назад

You could say the iPad has become your main computer in that scenario, and I say that myself because I use my iPad Pro over my MacBook Air for 90% of the time. However, I wouldn’t say that I switched away because I still use my MacBook for specific situations like using proctoring programs for tests that are better optimized on desktop compared to mobile, or running older websites that my iPad can’t render well.

The iPad is a good supplementary device if you already want one. It can be a primary device if you use it for drawing and things like that. I think most people honestly do not need an iPad at all, but it is cool device to have if you want to enhance your experience in my humble opinion.

Today’s topic is spot on! One additional thought for me is that even if I could seamlessly go 100% to my iPad Pro, I’d still keep my Mac based upon some sense of security. Knowing that if I had to, I could go to my Mac, for me, makes me feel “safe”.

I never took iPads seriously until my time at Apple. As an employee, using iPads day-to-day I really appreciated the value and the versatility of iPads. Everyone in my family owns one, except me. However, I would still choose a Mac if I only had money to buy one. I don't think iPads will ever be good enough to replace Macs just from a business standpoint.

I can never understand why ppl say iPad can replace a computer/pc. coz sure it can do things pc can do but that doesn't mean it should. can a suv replace truck. sure in some instances, but in many cases, it is not a good or smart choice to use suv for trucks. iPad are good for something. pc structure are good for some other things. period

I could not live with the iPad as my only "computer." It is great for some basic tasks and web-browsing but is not a full computer. My Mac hosts all of the files in iCloud which means I did not have to buy more than the base storage on the iPad. When I need a computer, I need a computer and the iPad simply does not cut it. In that respect, I really think of the iPad as a supplement to my MacBook Pro.

If your so keen to switch to iPad exclusively, then you need to figure out a workflow that is suitable for your needs. I am a heavy excel user and IOS office app sucks but I managed to find a work around by using Google Sheets to build the sheets with all the features that I cant get on native app then import to excel. I even use SketchUp on the browser and works like magic. So it really depends what you need and how you can figure out the workflow.

At home (as I have been for the last six months!) my maxed out 2020 MacBook Air is linked to a Brydge Stone Pro Thunderbolt 3 multiport hub with two 28" Samsung QLED 4k monitors. I use the Daylite CRM system to run my business - its available for MacOS and IOS. I use the software on both platforms, but only the MacOS version can use great plugin software which automates e-mail templates and merges data to produce Word documents. I mainly use the IOS versions for reference purposes but not 'real work'. At the moment, my iPad could not replace my Mac - it just doesn't provide the full functionality I need on a daily basis.

I started using LumaFusion over Final Cut Pro now (the touch screen and pencil really help with the experience and it renders faster)... I'm able to do everything for my business on the iPad except for one thing. Localhost using MAMP PRO in order to test changes to my site before they go live. In some ways the iPad beats the Mac now for certain things. I can see why they are switching the Mac to ARM, to find that balance between the two devices.

I replaced my MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro. At the time it was such a great idea. And RUclips is full of videos saying that the iPad can replace your Desktop experience.
Even with all the improvements, I haven't found that to be true. Yes you *can* do complex tasks on the iPad - but most of the time it's just too cumbersome to do so! From the larger issues you've mentioned (Pro applications, and niche applications people may use) to small issues like multi-tasking, file management, monitor support being subpar compared to a desktop.
Let's not forget the cost of the device - a 12.9" 256 iPad plus Magic Keyboard/pencil costs $1663 USD - you could get a mid tier MacBook Pro 13" with a maxed out CPU and 512GB SSD that runs MacOS, is a better 'laptop' for $1700
I heard someone else say that the iPad has elevated beyond standard tablet experience but it hasn't quite hit laptop yet. It's this awkward in-between that has this owner particularly frustrated.

Ditto! I own both the MBP 16” and the iPad Pro 12.9 with LTE.
I love both devices, but the iPadOS is dummied down on the application capabilities.
I honestly tried to use my iPad Pro as a standalone device for 1 month...😖 Trying to do anything productive like using the Files application was cumbersome to say the least.
Oh...Microsoft Office Suite is also dummied down for the iPadOS. My work email is Outlook of course.
Now...if Apple can put the MacOS onto the iPad ...OMG!!! Home Run!!! Especially having LTE and the stylist capabilities.

I am constantly having and testing this debate: can I do all that I need to do on an iPad? For me, though it's from the point of view of Office productivity. iPad's Office 365 options are not as feature-rich, even compared to the web features, in the features that I need. In the PPT's that I produce, I need to change the object's orders (not just move to the front or backwards) and that can't be done on the iPad version. There are also considerably fewer Designer ideas on the iPad. Both the online and the desktop versions have so much more in terms of the functionality that I need. It's a shame but I too need to keep using a Mac/MacBook for productivity like this.

So we need both. I got the iPad pro to use as my main personal device for the next few years. I have 2 older MBP from 2015 (one provided by work and my old one from school). But I figure I will use my iPad for just about everything personal. But I still need a macbook for workflow, but can deal with an older once since I got an updated iPad. However, I think that it's hard to just have an iPad. It's a great addition. Even for the average user, like myself, sometimes you just need the computer to have the external stuff and just be able to have more than 2 or 3 windows up. thanks :)

If your workflow is primarily word processing, web browsing, emailing, spreadsheets, etc, you can totally get by with iPad only. Some people need specialized software, which keeps them tied (Adobe CC, Final Cut, Sketch, etc.)

I doubt that Apple would put FCPX & Logic Pro X need a lot of RAM like 8GB of RAM or more and the iPad Pro only has 8GB, so like a MacBook that doesn’t have a lot of RAM it will crash and burn. Unless iPad Pro can be upgraded to 16GB of RAM then I can’t see it happen unless they come out with a less RAM power hungry FCPX Lite that is optimize for an iPad Pro’s. That’s the iPad biggest blunder is that the RAM can’t be upgraded and a lot of things the iPad could do in terms it being a person main computer versus having a real McCoy computer is it’s not there yet. Not ruling out the possibility.

Sideline boos? Get in the game son. Basic stabilization, advanced settings like optical flow and plenty in between isn't available for iPad editors... oops.

Why do I still need a Mac?
    Plug ins
    Printing in draft quality
    Time machine
    Excel scripts
    Multitasking
    Window management
    Background not reloading
    External monitors full screen
Completely ridiculous the iPad Pro can’t do these for the price.
    No excuse for such nonsense.
The iPad Pro should cost $500 max then rightfully take its place as a “pad”, notebook replacement, and compliment to the Mac. Take out the camera and faceid. Or stop the software limiting garbage.

what should i get for college to take into uni -
    macbook pro 13”?
    iPad Pro 12.9”?

Depends. Terrible answer - I know - but that's how it is. I need a Laptop for engineering, but also love using my iPad for writing reports, working on drawings and going paperless in general. So you really have to see what is going to come up in Uni for your degree!

i’m 100% student, i write a lot of essays, email teachers, watch youtube, make mindmaps and revision cards etc, so online classes and just in general enjoy playing games and watching netflix - would the iPad be ok for that?

I would go the iPad Pro. I bought the 2018 12.9” for school and it is amazing. For the few things that I do need a computer for (Long form writing, desktop apps etc) I just go to the computer lab.

You are still using a Mac because iPadOS is designed to have a Mac and iPad. Apple want you to use Handoff and buy BOTH devices. The limitations of both are very well thought-through.
