I NEVER write comments but felt compelled to here (yeah, I know I’m a year late!) A really thoughtful and thorough account of your iPad journey - and the journey of the device itself - that I’ve found extremely useful. Thank you!
I used to regard the iPad as an overpriced media consumption tool. But I'm writing my eighth novel on my M1 iPad Pro in MS Word. Mouse and keyboard support really helps. My personal tech bag (I travel abroad a lot for work, or will again soon) has everything I need to keep the tech charged, M1 iPad Pro 11" 256GB, Magic Keyboard, AirPods Pro, Magic Mouse 2 and a 1 TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. Oh, and a multi-port dongle in case I need to plug into hotel internets.
I’ve been wanting to get back into writing. Can I ask what size your iPad Pro is? Wondering how the writing experience would be for me with a Magic Keyboard. I have an Air 4 so possibly smaller than yours. I’m torn between getting one or just going for a MacBook which I’ve always wanted too. Though not cheap lol. I’m about to start the video but noticed your comment as well. Congrats on 8 novels! 🎉 Edit: Oh wow you said 11” my bad haha
Weirdly enough, I started with the Magic Keyboard, and I didn't like that it turned my iPad into just a standard laptop basically. I didn't wanna constantly take off the keyboard case either. So I got the folio keyboard instead, and I like it a lot more. I can leave it on the back of the iPad when I wanna use it as a tablet and I just bring a bluetooth mouse with me for when I need a cursor on screen. I know, it's weird.
update: Ik it's only 4 days later but I tried the Logitech keyboard... and wow. I can have a cursor on a keyboard case that DOESN'T need to be seperatley charged/use bluetooth and it can ALSO fold back into tablet mode without removing it. Sweet.
Great recap of the iPads evolution! I think to this day there are two iPad camps - 1) Those who view it as just a big iPhone (2) Those who see the future of mainstream computing. The iPad is a work in progress, it is Apple figuring out what that future looks like, step by step. Sometimes it’s one step backwards before two steps forward. As an unashamed iPad fanatic, who even loves the touchscreen keyboard (I am way quicker typing on it than a physical keyboard) I love seeing that evolution unfold before my eyes. It is not a device for those who just want what we’ve had for decades. 👍
I have a 2nd gen, 10.5” iPad Pro constantly by my side. I write & record music on it, record & edit movies, prepare presentations, my wife edits her photography on the iPad, we video chat w friends on the other side of the country and in India, we watch tv & movies....it’s the best “gadget” investment I’ve ever made.

Great video and thank you giving a mention to those of us with a visual disability. We are rarely given any kind of consideration. What do you use for a granner checker? I'm having issues with Grannarley after the most recent IpadOS updates. Now the Check My Text button doesn't work with the automatic grammar checking long been disabled.
Aspiring author -- was hoping to find your love letter to Scrivener - alas! I'm debating between Google Docs and Scrivener (Scrivener looks too complicated as a new user - I bought a copy but can't get myself to use it - need to see how existing authors are using it).
I have used docs scrivener and word. Scrivener is my go to for all of my creative writing. They have a tutorial project that walks through the learning curve. Highly recommend it.
Really good video. I’ve been thinking of switching to iPad with scrivener since my Mac air died and have had to use the wife’s Mac book. This was very interesting. Definitely do what works for you. I also find getting that first draft down no matter what is the biggest challenge. I’m all about the rewrite 🙂
Very helpful, though I am watching on an IPad 2020 pro right now, with the Smart Folio. I use my iPad for the same reason you do! I love it. Also, with your quality I thought you would’ve had at least 100k subscribers. You’re gonna be big! :)
I love the video! Thanks for all your effort. I noticed you type with your middle finger almost exclusively on your left hand. This leads to an extreme amount of unnecessary wrist movements. This can lead to carpal tunnel issues very quickly. Being a writer you would greatly benefit from learning traditional typing technique.
Yep - it's a confounding issue because typing traditionally with my index finger is what triggers the pain. So I type with my middle finger and wear a rigid wrist brace to eliminate all wrist movement. Thank you very much for the tip, though!
The iPad is essentially a Netbook without an internal keyboard. More than that is it is a clone of other tablet PCs that came into existence more than a decade before Apple re-branded the idea as their own "innovation". Your complaints against other writing software is rooted in how easily you are distracted. Nothing really to do with the type of technology chosen. But since you also have a carpal tunnel injury why aren't you using voice command and dictation software that translates your words into editable text? Then the command side of things an be used to re-arrange or edit the text. There are training steps for the software to get to know how you speak or pronounce words. It will adapt over time to get better at helping you write out your thoughts. Or instead of spending more money on tech toys to review for your channel you could hire a professional typist who can go through your creations or hammer out your thoughts as you speak them.
This is this most out of touch comment I've ever read on RUclips, and that's saying something. Every single sentence is wrong, or an opinion on something that is not based in any reality (and often addressed directly in the video).

Amazingly well researched and presented!
I bought the magic keyboard, but I hated the feel, I ended up buying a mechanical keyboard, nice clacking keys.
I did so much research on writing apps, I ended up with scrivener! Hope it’s nice!
I love my magic keyboard.! Glad to hear you’re having a pleasant experience with using it!
What a well scripted video. I really enjoyed watching this all the way through and learnt a lot
Love this!
I would definitely be interested in a video about your working workflow
Thank-you, I’m going to add scrivener to my iPad Pro

Very interesting. A good job. Congratulations from Paris

Wonderful….thank you for your terrific channel!!!⭐️
My magic keyboard has peeled terribly. It’s got nothing with wear and tear. Even those places where I don’t touch much are also peeling.
This is such a underrated video, love you channel and hope you grow
Thank you! I commented like a week ago on a freewrite review :)
Keep up the good work!

same- but with the magic keyboard :D
@@nokii2238 is it any good? I have a crappy cheap blue tooth keyboard but I was looking for something nicer now that I can afford it.

Dude, was that a Yashica twin reflex?
Not writing……..illustrating….. my pro is awesome for art! Also the magic keyboard kicks serious butt!
I remember the good old days of that old interface
Me watching this on my ipad
The Smart Folio is doing its very best to pay homage to the Sinclair Spectrum's "dead flesh" keyboard.
Cool but nothing beats pen and paper
But it’s really great to write on Pages. Super friendly.
9:27 you had the opportunity to write “failiou” on the iPad screen and you blew it
Hi nice vid
Nice phones and iPads and laptops that is probably a lot of money like 10k dollars or something that is super nice.
iPad Pro starts @$799.99,and is worth it

Why? Did you actually watch the video? Because it makes a very compelling argument for the opposite.
