Love your storytelling. I moved from Woking (Surrey) to Sydney. Sure you can have as much planning and control in your life as you want. But make sure you have some friends in Singapore, who you can meet for having good time. Otherwise, the next time you go back to London and meet your friends, you won’t feel like going back to Singapore again.

I have lived in Singapore for 38 years. I have friends from Australia & USA who intend to migrate to Singapore, thinking it's a small city state in Asia, where an expat will be highly valued. They thought, we need English teachers, we still live in jungle, and since it's part of Asia, it must be cheap. I told them : Give it trial run, at least 3 - 6 months! They were shocked at how modern it is, almost everything runs on auto & digital. Their wives & daughters are safe back at the apartment at 2 am after dancing at the clubs, took taxi. All these infrastructure cost money, so is safety. Heck, Singapore was even once import drinking water! Singapore's cost of living is high. Employment is tight & competitive. Somebody from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar will be ready to do your type of jobs, for lower price. Since the pandemic, when most of workforce chose to work from home, the rental of apartment has been skyrocketing. It's what it's. My take is: You can't be poor in Singapore, life will be miserable.

@@vrindanambiar4470 Singapore has diverse residential area. $10k a month for 2 persons is good enough, if you know how to budget properly. Eg. Stay at suburban, where the apartment rental is cheaper. Supermarket products are cheaper - this is where the locals shop. The wet markets are plenty, where you could get fresh produce eg : meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. Restaurant prices downtown is expensive, but many cafe & food court & fast food joints are relatively cheap. Don't worry about transport, Singapore is an island, everywhere is connected by MRT (train) and buses. These public transport is cheap. Don't buy car. Car in Singapore is 4x the price in Europe & USA.

I just wrote an equivalent assessment of Sydney based on your honesty but it turned from a dirge into a novella. In my case i was sizing up the impact of living conditions on personal connections. The short version is Sydney was recently voted the third least friendly city on earth and although I'm not widely travelled, this rang true for me, when this definitely wasn't always the case. I think this is a place where the impact of changing economics on culture and interpersonal relationships is stark. To the extent that even relative wealth, as well, is arguably not enough to sustain you here. It was once a place where you could still have an interesting life with warmth in it even if you were not wealthy. I miss those days terribly. It just became incrementally less and less like that. I've sometimes said that living in Sydney feels like living with someone you've broken up with. It's like you need to grieve but instead you can't distance yourself, all the time. I don't know if that makes any sense, I've never lived with an ex. I've also said it's like living with a ghost city superimposed onto the one you see, where you're haunted. It sounds a bit emo and gentrification in cities is common, I'm not as young as i was, and i am also depressed. Which is why when i saw that vote of unfriendliness it was like a revelation.
It's hard to put my finger on things that might be universal rather than my particulars, at least without waffling. I can almost explain it like an infection where you could almost unconsciously start to become part of an atmosphere you hate just by trying to subsist and get by. If we take the idea of avoidance of eye contact on public transport as a reference point, it's both super unfriendly and there's also reasons this behaviour is learned over time, until you may practice it yourself unconsciously without a second thought.
I think one of my biggest worries about this place is that it hardens people and arguably you will be in some degree of danger here if you cannot foster this trait. It's a dog eat dog world and if you tend to get anxious under stupid amounts of pressure, please stay far away if you can, I feel like joyful people could wind uo leading a joyless existence here. It could still change again, but it could be argued the city has always had traits from its colonial inception that are rotten to the core.
John Birmingham who wrote He Died With A Felafel In His Hand wrote a history of the seamier side of Sydney called Leviathan, and this is a reminder to myself to read it.

Sg is branded as the most expensive city to lived in due to bias reporting based on expat living their full western lifestyle without adapting to Sg local lifestyle. Cars ownership are purposely made costly to limit the need to expand roads infrastructure in limited land in this small island. But this is grossly compensated by the public transport (trains & bus & taxis ) systems. Housing rentals has escalated in 2022 largely due to the huge surge of expats, foreign companies and Chinese relocating to Sg from China & Hong Kong. Also the downturn of global economy coupled with the Ukraine / Russia war affecting EU countries, UK and US, many westerners plus some Indian nationals also relocate to Sg due to Sg’s stability. This aggravated rental market chasing the steep rise. The cheaper way is to rent and live in our HDB flats which is much more affordable than condominium and landed properties.

I just came back from Malaysia after visiting some relatives.
    Inflation there is crazy.
For locals, their daily necessities is way more expensive for locals earning ringgit.
Even their so called subsidise petrol is 😅
In fact, normal people like us,no matter where,Inflation hit many of us.
As for housing in Singapore, like what some mentioned, the housing market is crazy because of many expats moving here which pushes up the rental market.
One more thing is that during the last 2 years covid, there was not enough manpower building new houses.
Now manpower is back, the building of new houses is starting to get back into shape,so hopefully in a year or 2,the market will be lowered or at least stabilise.

Learn to adapt. Expect the unexpected no matter how well you have planned because there will be factors which are not in your control. Simply put, the world is not perfect, and we all live in this imperfect world. As long as you moderate your expectation and loosen up a bit in your strive for perfection, you will find life less stressful and acceptable. It's all in the mind. Sometimes, just accept reality as is. It is what it is. You would probably be happier. Look for the sunshine, not the rain. Be optimistic.

Thank you so much for sharing your valuable experiences. I definitely agree, Malaysia is a beautiful, friendly and a very hospitable place, it's one of my favourite places on earth. I do think that in Singapore, hospitality and friendliness is "served" differently, for example, I've been lost a few times in Singapore and after approaching locals, they've been super friendly and we end up talking for a bit, same in cafes I frequent, with local customers, baristas and waiters. I've enjoyed this here. I think London also has a reputation of being "unfriendly" (which I can completely see), but when you start talking to Londoners, they are very helpful and will stop in their busy day to assist (mostly). I believe love and kindness can be served in different ways, but ultimately, most people in the world are kind. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have to agree, with the way this world functions, when we slow down something has to give, and it’s usually pay. But I do believe, if one has the means (even modest means), it can do wonders to slow down, leave the rat race (even if temporarily). We were never designed to work in that way. In case you’re interested, I talk a little about this in my earlier videos: Moving to Singapore (part 1) and a silent vlog from 2021 titled Working from Home. Few years ago, I often go to Singapore for work. It is a beautiful & safe country. I do like Singapore a lot but I know I can't afford a luxury lifestyle there. Singapore is great but if a comfortable/luxury lifestyle we are looking for, we either have to earn more or choose a lower cost country. I will still love to travel to Singapore for sure.

Thanks so much for your insight, it will be useful to others. We have been enjoying Singapore, but we and many others are having countless conversations around exactly what you’ve shared. It’s all really about “value for money”. I think foreigners from countries with weaker currencies compared to Singapore may see a financial benefit, but generally, I think those that aren’t from those countries will see a hit to their savings e.g., for a ONE bed/studio for rent is £2500-800 per calendar month, not including bills and expenses (so families with tuition fees have a lot more expenses). I do think in this seemingly “year of layoffs” people will reconsider moving abroad generally, or returning home.

I stumbled upon this video by chance, and thank you for sharing this. I am a local who decided to move out of my mum's place and live independently five years ago - something that is uncommon amongst the locals. Just as there were ups to having my own space, there are certainly downs that come with it. Those down moments made me feel regretful at times for moving out and the thought of moving back to my mum's place is, for lack of a better word, embarrassing - despite her lovingly keeping the option open for me. Recently, life has it that I got into a dispute with my then-landlord that forced me out of the apartment and settled in another unit that, to quote your words in this video, is far from perfect. I have spent the last few months desperately trying to find a space that would be more long-term for me but that has not been successful. I felt lost and desperate until I decided to slow down and appreciate what I have now and funny how life just got brighter and lighter then. My point is, I felt I was alone in going through all that until I saw this and, so, it is always a good reminder that when you think you are alone, you are not. No regrets. Only life experiences to live and remember by :)

Thank you so much for sharing, it was truly insightful to read the experiences of renting from yourself as a local. You have really helped me understand renting in Singapore more from your perspective. I am so sorry that you've experienced these downs and hope you are doing okay now? We are sending you lots of love and well wishes to find home. Because that's what we all want and need, whether it's our own property (mortgaged) or we are renting, we as human beings need home. For physical shelter and for our general wellbeing. I hope you have found it and feeling much more rooted and stable now in life ❤️ I've had my fair share of bad landlords too (as well as good ones), so I completely relate to your experience of needing to leave a place because of them :( But like you have said, life is a journey and our experiences truly make us stronger and wiser. I am so glad you have no regrets. Thank you so much for sharing, it has meant to much to me! I would also love to hear from you and see how you are doing. I'm glad that at the end of the video you said you have no regrets :) Seriously, Singapore is one of the safest places in the world. Transport links via MRT and buses to everywhere - you don't need a car. Here there are no natural disasters, no typhoons. Weather is like summer all year round - no freezing cold winters. Can jet to neighbouring countries for holidays on the cheap. In Singapore, everything is so convenient. If you are hungry, just walk downstairs to hawker stall. Of course there will always be other factors like increasing rental to contend with - but you need to understand why this is so - there are many others like you coming here to take advantage of the job or business opportunities and personal safety they cannot find back home.

This is a beautiful little short video. I too moved to Singapore for higher education last year with big plans and a dream. Things didn’t go as per plan and I’ve always had to redirect efforts and change the course of action. What I loved about your video is how you’ve been able to still make sense of it all despite the obvious disappointments we do face. We can only truly hope for the best but ultimately what’s written will manifest, the rest is just our emotions, thoughts, anxiety and fear that’s holding us back or clouding judgement. Moving wasn’t the easiest but I don’t regret taking the plunge and I suppose life is what you make of it but also what’s in store for you. However through it all, it’s important to take each day as it comes and appreciate the time we have and be happy in the present which is a much more healthier way to go about life. Deep underlying messages and I’m glad that I can relate to this and that there are other people who are also going through the same feelings and emotions.

I’m a Singaporean who moved to London six years ago. The tropical thunderstorms are what I miss the most, and when London skies are generous enough to provide a little shower, it almost feels like home. All the rain footage in your video brought lots of comfort (thank you!) and I’m glad that you’re finding joy in some of it too. I grew up learning to work around it - to clock in a good nap, enjoy the indoors, or linger a little longer at the coffee shops and order a second teh tarik. I hope you find some form of home and what works for you in singapore. It already looks like you’ve managed to over the course of a few months, which is commendable. All the best ❤

Our mangroves are really unique (and fading) and it’s quite calming being in the middle of it all at sunrise. I try to join one whenever I’m back for Christmas and it’s a really special experience you can only get in the tropics :)

    • @fahmidamiah
      @fahmidamiah  Год назад +3

We have found locals to be very friendly :) I think immersion into phones is a 'city person' trait and you do find this in Singapore for sure, as well as London etc. Singapore is sometimes described as "reserved" and Singaporeans don't tend to talk to strangers, and as a Londoner myself, this is no different from city life back home. But I do think people are just busy, so I can totally understand why people might feel lonely; it's understandable. I have found it's been easiest to make new friends by doing more local activities and classes through hobbies. I also believe real friendships can take time to develop - years even - so with that in mind, I tend to just ensure I spend *quality* time in certain spaces rather than just being "anywhere" for the sake of it. Time is precious to me :)

lol, there are reasons why so many RUclips videos tell you Singapore is a Rich nation. It is literally for the Rich, unless you are born a Singaporean you need to be decently Rich to enjoy the perks in Singapore, both personal and wealth safety and top cheap educations and healthcare (only applies to Citizens) are the main perks of living in Singapore.. why do you think there is a movie called Crazy Rich Asian that was filmed in Singapore.. That movie wasn't a joke. Furthermore getting citizenship is getting way harder unless you are either super rich or real professional in technology/scientific fields or both. Well why I kept saying you need to be rich is because, if you are not you have to work your butts off to enjoy those perks.. And when you are working your butts off its not really enjoying isn't it plus if you aren't a citizen and you think you wanted to live in Singapore… good luck.

Thanks for watching. My video isn’t about anything you’ve mentioned, nor the multiple topics other people have brought up, but it makes me really happy that my video has opened up different conversations, thoughts and feelings from so many people outside of the topic I actually was talking about in the video: change. I appreciate your comment and everyone else’s because they matter!
Imo, it’s up to Singaporeans what they want Singapore to be. But with Crazy Rich Asians - it isn’t representative of Singapore nor Singaporeans and is a racist Hollywood film that excludes groups of Singaporeans for a mainly Chinese cast. That film also makes Singapore look like a bullying, mean girl state to the sweet and innocent American-Asian. It is propaganda. Once you land in Singapore, it’s nothing like that film. Singapore is diverse in people, food and faith. People are kind, helpful, work hard and many people are stressed too. It’s a very interesting place and a lot can be learnt. But I agree: it’s very expensive for foreigners. My video isn’t really about that though ☺️

@@fahmidamiahBut sadly it was the truth, not implying that I am stereotyping every Singaporean, but it's the truth even for the women in the movie you quoted. Because even the middle class are acting that way.. Of course again not everyone.. So if Middle classes are acting that way.. It not hard to think the upper classes wouldn't and could be worst. By the way, I am a Singaporean. And I just wanted to write for others who watched your video if they thought they wanted a “retire” life in Singapore.. It's just hard to be enjoyable if you do not have capital to spend. No problem if you are there for vacation. 👍 oh and I wasn't writing to criticize your regret, if you thought I was hostile, I am just writing the reality and I thought maybe even with a lot of information out there, people would still experience it, what's better than to experience it and learning it through experience.

Thanks for sharing! Singapore is doable especially if you’re single or sharing (for families there are more factors to consider like schools). If one is happy to venture further out and try something different, it’s more accessible. And I love kopitiams! $2 teh is my go to 🙌🏽 and I love a beef rendang or ayam penyet from hawker centres (usually for me $7-8). The food and drink is closer to my own South Asian culture so that is not new for me, it makes me feel at home (I am very lucky ). For other expats, it may be too different from what they have from their own countried and cultures and that’s understandable if they don’t want to have Singaporean food every day. After all, our food preferences are set at a young age.

I have moved so many times to different countries and it is always overwhelming with feelings at first.. and I remember how I hated to go to Ikea and buy same stuff for every move 😂

Thank you so much for sharing and you're so right! It's definitely overwhelming, friend! I hope you're feeling much better now. I read that moving can (and often is) as stressful as other life events. Many people underestimate how taxing it can be, even if one is super organised etc. So, moving *countries* is "normal" to feel overwhelmed and I'm certainly still feeling it 🥰 Wishing you well and hope wherever you are, you're having a good time ❤️

why would anyone in their right mind move to Singapore??LOL. Houses are like shoeboxes and cost $600k and upwards and even a toyota cost $150k and up. Crazy expensive and humid country with high cost of living. Lived in Singapore for 4 years and could not wait to move out .

Thank you for sharing! I think it’ll be useful for so many others deciding on whether Singapore will be right for them, especially at this time. Positive and negative experiences are a reality of travel for sure. I also believe experiencing moving, working abroad, building relationships in different places are wonderful and unique experiences, there is a lot to gain beyond some of the cons in a place, but of course, one place maybe right for some, but totally wrong for another, that’s okay ☺️ So I’m sorry to read Singapore wasn’t right for you… I’m curious to know, Where are you now? I hope you have found happiness and a place called home there. I know how important that is ❤️
