- In 2013, the Japanese robot band Z-Machines and the German Compressorhead robot band began performing in front of live audiences. This video shows clips of Compressorhead and Z-Machines playing music.

Compressorhead gets my vote. Most natural sounding of the two and the mannerisms take the cake.
Unlike Z machines, Compressorhead plays enjoyable music. They have my vote.
As sson as Compressorhead's bass robot started the riff from Ace of Spades that was all she wrote. The kickass drummer sealed the deal. Sorry, Z-Machines.
Although Z gets props for having hottie singer girls on stage. Compressorhead needs a killer singer.

They recently got one, plus a female-ish guitar-playing robot. The singer has kickass piston-teeth to emulate lip movement when singing. By far the coolest looking robot in the group thus far.

Compressorhead wins, hands, erm, actuators down. Seems Z machines has sold out only spouts mindless drivel such as "Buy zima, put your zima up!" like a good, obedient corporate puppet while Compressorhead has metal coursing trough their hydraulic hearts.
Z Machines is more technically impressive, but the music is just a barely-listenable jumble, like if you tried to make a supergroup out of Rush, Dream Theater, and Dragonforce but kept all members with the exception of bassists all playing at the same time at different tempos and time sigs with their already-massive egos entirely on the loose. Compressorhead is content to just jam and are much more listenable because of it, plus the really old school, sort of basic styling on the bots themselves is really cool.
Although I'm sure a supergroup with Rush and Dragonforce would have phenomenal synth work!

i super implore you to go listen to 'dissolver' by squarepusher (which was made using zmachines as production tools). their system is wildly more technical and in songs like that, it really can shine through musically in an incredible way
10/10 idea for a new TV show, where people build robot bands to faceoff against each other.
We are not ready for Z Machine's song, but our grandkids are probably gonna love it.
That's just Japanese music. If they were playing deathcore we already listen to faster metal. So far Japanese music only gets thru to other nations if it's little girls in skimpy outfits playing western rock.

I really prefer the Compressorheads over Z-Machines. From what I've seen Z-Machines just produce noise and from what the video says are playing faster then humans can which is easy for robots to do and not very impressive.
The Compressorheads on the other hand are playing actually recognizable songs and aren't as crazy or wild looking. To make a robot that can play like an actual human can is much more impressive in my eyes then just straight up out doing humans.
I also knowtest that the Compressorheads seem to much more personality.
Playing tons of drums and guitars at 1 time. Something any human could do. Not! That's why I like Compressorheads more because they are more "realistic" in a playing music sense.

I had sooo much fun back in the day working for Joseph Engelberg in the beginning of robotics in CT . We did some pretty goofy stuff with the bots..this is brilliant!

Yeah, I have to say, that was a pretty disappointing performance from them. More on the fault of whoever wrote the music I believe. If I remember correctly, Squarepusher wrote something that the Z-Machines played that was much better.

At least compressorhead moves around and is active. Yeah the lasers were cool but their drummer was all torn apart on separate drums, compressorheads drummer actually moved and hit the drums itself.
I liked both but i noticed a lack of authenticity because they are mechanical and locked to music theory and time measures, also please note they never pitch bended or hammered-on/pulled-off other than that they are good they still have little ways to go because they can replace musicians
Compressorhead's drummer is way better and cooler, at least they tryed to design him like a punk rock drummer.
I also just love the bass on Compressorhead.

Compressorhead has more of the feeling of a real rock band. They play real guitars and they have gigs on small underground stages, they weren't made big by some company as marketing idea.

I like the derpy look of the guitar robot of compressorhead
I want to know two things. Firstly, the energy of one bass string can cause others to vibrate with out you picking them so how does the bassist bot mute the strings that aren't being played? And second, are the guitarist bots able to do things like natrual harmonics, pinch harmonics and tapping? They can obviously do hammer ons and pull offs but tapping is hammer ons and pull offs with both your picking and fretting hand. The whole combining music with robots intrigues me so naturally I'm curious.
Remember Atom the movie? That was considered futuristic and now we literally have that.
The movie was set in 2022 i believe. Im a huge nerd for real steel and compressorhead is 2 of my favourite things put together. Robots and rock
And this is old Compressorhead. They are greatly improved and have a really cool new lead singer.
So we've actually reached that stage in history where we are comparing the musical talents of robots. I think we've finally reached "The Future" that all those Sci Fi writers were banging on about in their novels. If Compressorhead played Glastonbury I would actually consider buying a ticket. Those boys are tight.

Musical taste aside, let me say for the record that the first Compressorhead video (the Ace of Spades one) appeared on RUclips in December 2012. Some 4 months before the first Z-machine videos.

It's an unfair challenge. Z-machine has big funders with fancy designs. I still like Compressorhead more anyways. :)

Both are cool, but gonna have to go Compressorhead all the way. They're built around real instruments, their "body" movements are more natural, and they music is more listenable. And the little robot dude opening and closing the hi-hat takes the cake.
