The Robots are real up until and a little after the scene where the lights flicker. Up until that point, the camera is very stable and all the motions of the robots are true to life, with some moderate editing tricks here and there to speed up their motion to match the song. I.E setting up high precision movements and having them go slow on purpose to reduce motion blur from rapid movement to the camera, then speeding it up later to maintain visual quality. All very easy things to do when you have a motion-controlled camera. TL:DR - Mainly practical with tasteful bits of CG used near the end. Some parts of the music were done purely by Nigel separately from the robots and layered/dubbed over them. having the robots mimic the action as certain things like maintaining sustain can be difficult for a robot to do without making use of the pedals on the floor. The bots may have been used to make some of the layers for the sound if Nigel though the quality of what they were producing through the instruments was good enough. but Likely had to clean up or layer his own track on top of them to form the final piece. This means that in the video the bots as essentially doing the human equivalent of lip-syncing. Following the carefully choreographed motions, they were programmed to do. Including the little things like rotating additional axis in a motion to add visual 'flare' to the piece and make it feel less 'cold'. This means none of the visual instruments need to be plugged in, mic'd or anything. That doesn't matter as it is still visually matching up with what we are hearing. While the turn-table actions by the bots may have been nonsense, it visually worked and most people enjoyed it. And it clearly isn't CGI because you can see the robots fixture putting pressure on the turntable and rocking it slightly as that pressure point moves along its top. CGI is possible but is hard and expensive compared to just doing it. Cost for the bots is essential, nothing because Kuka is a sponsor. Nigel could use as many as he wanted because of that, and Kuka wouldn't mind because it is a great advertisement for their robots. As many people see doing something so human, such as playing an instrument, as delicate and precise. Also, CGI would lose so many of the little things if used that would make it feel way more out of place. details of the connection ports on the robots, the massive array of lights around the room, etc. CGI isn't perfect and lighting is literally one of the hardest things to get right. Many big movies have shown this the be true because their CGI just didn't look right and a lot of it has to do with lighting. You can overcome this though by dropping the number of sources, (which happens after the flicker) and by adding a BUNCH of motion blur to cover up your CGI artifacts, using rapid cuts, more active camera moves and more motion and action in general to hide your crimes. So in the last section. There is a mix of real and CGI bots. with clever cuts and camera moves to hid the cross between them. The one the punches the piano is actually real and this bot is doing nothing more than punching air. with the piano being comp'd in over it and CG keys and debris layered on that. This same thing happens with the ones with the laser, as the laser is the only CG thing about it. They more than likely had an extension on them that did nothing more than have a light at the end of it. Lots of their actions are speed way up, but you notice that they really aren't doing any interactions anymore. Just rapid movements that stop short of touching anything. Even the one on the electric keyboard is just rapidly moving its head side to side in one main position, slightly away from the keyboard. Which makes sense. You wouldn't want to damage any actual working instruments if you didn't have to as unlike the bots, they aren't free. So during the first bit where they are being more controlled with less exaggerated motions, they actually interact with things. but for safety at the end, they don't. and the cameras more exaggerated motions and their increase in speed (all of which don't have Nigel in the shot with them) makes you, the viewer, feel like they still are. This paired with the chaos of the scene visually, and the ongoing music over them. You have no reason to doubt that they aren't doing anything anymore. Btw, Thank you to anyone who actually read all of this and got through my ramblings.
Yeah not the usual comment but I enjoyed reading it after watching, good to see it laid out bare like that. Can tell you know this stuff and explaining it does need some explaining. Cheers

I've seen this video at least a dozen times and I love it! The music is awesome, choreography is incredible. I fell in love with the music when I first watched CYMATICS. Unreal. Thank you for the connection, Nigel. From a 56 year old who appreciates the connection between sound and all the universe.
First Last I did search for Nigel Stanford interview but that didn't yield any results. As soon as I saw "the verge" in your comment I opened up google. I read the article and I'm a little dissapointed. But the music is still good. Now I just don't understand. Are the BTS videos fake too? If not, why didn't he just use the damn robots to play the song in the video. I apologize for any shit I said to you. Your initial comment just made you seem like either a troll or an asshole.
Again, it's not fake - the robots are real. I don't know why you have this compulsion to lie in multiple threads, unless you're some kiddie looking for attention.
This is stupidly incredible, the picture quality, the set, the machinery, the robots, the instruments, the colours, the old, the new, your headphones, the precision and pace of the robots, the piano melody, the keyboard, the central speakers and the mixing. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.
Mmm, not so much. Supposedly, BD bots are at least fairly autonomous in some of their programming, like keeping balanced and walking from one point to another. As a robot programmer, I am certain that the Kuka's were human programmed for each discrete motion. They aren't in any way autonomous in the same way that the BD bots are portrayed.
Absolutely amazing the way this is put together, everything is perfect, the tune, the editing, the lighting, it's just brilliant. Kuka is out of this world. Well done!
Well, a lot of it appears staged and the video is sped up to give the impression of being in time. The music is pre-recorded. In other words, the video is shot to appear as if the machines 'played it' but they didn't. Plus it is not safe to ever put yourself that close to the machine arms--a malfunction will kill you. So the video is OK but it's not showing you what you think it's showing.
No humans were bored while creating this video. No humans were harmed while creating this video. No humans were unamazed while creating this video. Such a masterpiece! ❤
Even in 2021 this song clip holds up extremely well. Such a catchy tune and a really great set of visual effects. I especially love the subtle Android reference in his pupil close up. Great Job Nigel.
It's also amazing seeing how well the robots play the piano & keyboard. Those suckers move _fast,_ far faster than most people think they can, but also are incredibly accurate in those movements.
@@ManabiLT I take it you've not had the pleasure of watching an industrial robot like these perform a speed/precision display? If given the chance, take it. They're AMAZINGLY agile, fast, and precise. They'll take a glass topped off with champagne, set it on the ground, then grab it, rocket it to their highest possible reach, then stop so abruptly it looks like it hit a brick wall, and then shoot it back down to floor and not spill a SINGLE drop of bubbly. Yes, droplets do fly upward when the robot hits the top of the movement and stops abruptly, but literally EVERY drop falls right back into the glass.
I love both the music and the video. I'm a guitarist, certified toolmaker, educated 3D-designer and has worked as a software developer the last 20 years so I've basically worked with everything that is used in this video. I've watched this video so many times that I've lost count now. Well done!
I saw this years ago but couldn't remember what it was called so I googled "machines playing instruments and lasers" and there it was. It's a terrific song and a great video, but what I love most is the seeming intentionality of the robots: as if they're curious, not programmed at all but listening, watching, and learning as they go.
Nigel, this is brilliant! As a bass player I can tell you I cannot sit still listening, watching, playing this music. Love the drumming and well, everything. I just wa t tbe build to keep going, and going .... Play again, play again, play again...

I enjoy learning how this kind of thing is done so thanks for the breakdown.
Me too. Thanks for the explanation.

I don't think we can appreciate how much time and effort went into this video. Well done
@@guermanruschke944 How much of it is CGI though. I'd like to see a behind the scenes video.
@@guermanruschke944 the robots playing instruments are real. those robots are made for high-precision factory work, they just need to be set properly. there are some behind the scene videos if you check.
Guerman Ruschke-I believe the only CGI in this video are the lasers, otherwise it’s all flesh and blood...or factory grade titanium and lubricant...
@@guermanruschke944 He shows the robots playing bass and piano in a different video. I do believe however that the footage is sped up so the robots wouldn't apply too much force or malfunction. He also completely removed the dry recording otherwise you would hear mostly squeaks and whirs from the joints.

they think that robots will kill them
I'm agree with you, this video is awersome
Well, a lot of it appears staged and the video is sped up to give the impression of being in time. The music is pre-recorded. In other words, the video is shot to appear as if the machines 'played it' but they didn't.
Plus it is not safe to ever put yourself that close to the machine arms--a malfunction will kill you.
So the video is OK but it's not showing you what you think it's showing.

Why does being 2021 make a difference? Not an old song by any stretch of the imagination.
@@billmcgubbins1476 I think they meant the visuals more than the music. The CGI still holds up quite well.
