- With the cold weather starting to move in, I decided to go back to my roots and try targetting a variety of spiecies. The first of my course fishing adventures was to a lovely clear stream where I aimed to catch my first London barbel. It's safe to say there was plenty of action:)

Nice to see the Wandle looking so clean. In the 1960s you couldn't see the water in that stretch of the river cos it was covered in thick foam, sometimes of varying colours.

It's great down there, even if you're blanking you can fight muggers for your tackle. I always carry a machete on Wandle outings.
That was a sea trout all day long, best jumpers too, well done!
Maybe it was a sea trout but only until noon and not all day long, after 12 it was a Roach until about 3 ish and then a brown trout till morning

I'm approaching 60 and can remember the Wandle when it was an open sewer, used as a 'soakaway' by the neighbouring industries...

An amazing transformation, back to a crystal clear chalk stream supporting wild brownies - a local Big Issue vendor has shown me a photo of a 9lb'er taken on bread! (The fish being used to kids feeding the ducks - don't feed 'em bread; it fills them without their nutritional requirements!)

I'm just a short tram ride away yet never fish it - I quite fancy taking a light lure set up and bounce a jig head through a few of those swims...

If you do use a Nepali or any hooks targeting trout please try and use a single barbless. Trout fight like mad but are quite delicate and if you want them to survive that’s a start. Look into trout fish care please 🙏

Fish care is paramount.
Always use a wet unhooking mat if removing the fish from the river and be sure that the fish has recovered sufficiently before release.
If you have to touch the fish, hold it for photos etc. use wet hands only and be as quick as possible.
Use barbless in all situations!

Lived not far from Wandle park until I was 10. We were warned not to paddle in the river. Good to see the canal cleaned up too. I can remember the stench of the stagnant and polluted canal when walking over the bridge to Tooting Broadway
As a Canadian I was super surprised to see trout coming out of that creek . People here would definitely be focusing in on the trout . We have carp here , any they are an invasive species . We also have several varieties of suckers . I can't say that I'm familiar with the barbel . Interesting watch for sure .

Good to see people going back to their roots I’ve always been a course and match angler. I enjoy catching carp but on the float rod. Same with barbel love catching on light gear
Love it, many of us started our carp journey with general course fishing and with the right tackle is still a great sport...
Cool film. Lived near there for years but never fished it. Lovely little river. Moving the bike was class.
Carp are also course fish. Nice to see that the fish are back in the Wondle. Whe I lived in South London way back it was polluted, stank and completely lifeless.

Looks like a cracking little river with some nice clean fish and that is what fishing is all about getting a bend in the rod and enjoying it

What a good little river that goes for miles. The exact place you was at is only about 10 minutes away from me. Been down there a few times. Good few carp In there too

Absolutely marvellous stuff … To think this is right on in London. I’m amazed you only found a bike. Mind boggling with the trout , that water must be pristine. I’m saying nothing about the gent who wanted to eat your barbel… Good luck.
I hate to be 'that guy' as I know this will be met with a torrent BUT the law is clear you ARE allowed to keep certain fish (from public waters) legally.
Coarse (freshwater) fish
Each day you can only take from rivers:
1 pike (up to 65cm)
2 grayling (30cm to 38cm)
15 small fish (up to 20cm) including barbel, chub, common bream, common carp, crucian carp, dace, perch, rudd, silver bream, roach, smelt and tench.
Now whether the barbel in question was over 20cm, we can say probably yes, so technically he was right on that occasion, but not in the sense that he said in the UK you have to put them [all] back.
Great to see this section of river again - I got a job in South Wimbledon in 2004 and used to fish it before work! Used to be the odd carp as well but if was heavily fished then, so probably worse now!
I know that stretch really well. Fished it summer 2020 and 21 as I lived in Wandsworth. You found one of the best spots for Barbel but if you head up river a few miles through Morden Park that's where the party is. Tight lines
Great to see a trout from there. I know you can’t dictate what you catch but just so you know, the river trout season down your way is from 1st Apiril to 15th October; basically because they breed over the winter months, unlike coarse fish. Worth knowing in case you get your ear bent👍🏻Top marks for protecting our fish stocks 😎💪🏻

Hi mate I’m a local angler in south london I occasionally fish the wandle I’m wondering where abouts that last spot is that you were fishing as my target fish at the vg moment are barbel.Tight lines
Great video ,small rivers in London who new ,I live in the north east of England but have 2 nephews live in woolwich
I heard there was some old dry docks with fish in to introduce them to fishing just with a whip and maggots ,unless you can suggest an alternative,many thanks and keep vids going
I live in the North East now but learned to fish on little streams and ponds around south east london. There were lots of unlikely looking opportunities not far from Woolwich. Worth a look around the Thamesmead/Abbey Wood industial estates if they are still there. Used to catch cracking Rudd and Roach from what looked like little dykes. The River Darent at Shoreham and Otford was amazing for Chub and Brownies either ledgering meat or long trotting maggots. The river cray around old bexley to crayford for all sorts...tiny river but good fun...

Its good to see some of the London rivers with good size fish in them
love it mate, that was a sea trout (which is a type of brown trout). Rainbows arent native to the Uk so you shouldnt find them in the rivers.
Except for the Wye. Rainbows have naturalised in there.

Caught my first UK fish there, and PB chub a few months ago. Loads of chub.
But did not expect a brown trout to bite on spam, that's a rare catch!
Glad to know barbel still strives that area, might have a go at it with your technique the next time I go there.

Looks like a brown trout or potentially a small sea trout (I don't know if the Wandle gets sea trout) - it's not a rainbow trout
@@marcthain3994 Definitely not a brownie, a prog on telly a few years back of a specialist trout fisher, tried all rivers within London postcodes, inc the Wandle, the only place was the River Chess at Rickmansworth.
I`m always inclined to believe what someone who knows what he`s on about.
Go at the end of the close season when the rivers re open and trot a big old bunch of mags they go crazy for naturals

Really fascinating video. Interesting that you said the Chub was your first coarse fish in 6 years. Do Carpers not class Carp as coarse fish these days?
I thought the same, carp are of course coarse fish. Great vid tho' wasn't it.

Nice one Jacob, you can't beat those urban Rivers for some surprise catches. I live in a converted mill and the species that come through amazes me. I get all Coarse fish big Perch, Barbel, Chub Carp, Pike. The river i live on isn't as pressured as the ones your fishing, so it takes some skill to coax them out, which your obviously able to do. Thanks for sharing mate.
you can see trout on the surface near the deen city farm and then by wilderness island. also the runs downstream of hackbridge road

Quite common actually but many people just don't know where to look. They are doing pretty well in the Northwest.

When I grew up in mitcham, the Wandle was a dead river. Was huge clods of foam coming out of the board Mills at collier's wood.
What a lovely video - first time of seeing one from you, Jacob. When the floods subside, I must get out onto the R. Tone at Taunton for some chub sport, inspired by this video.

Good to see how health the London rivers are
I've had some mental catches in random London waterways like the river Lea and grand Union canal. Foul hooked a flounder on his dorsal fin next to Bow flyover once and caught a big Zander in the same spot on the same day. Had quite a few big Tench come out of those East London waterways too.
When I was growing up went to the wandle school. Back then if you ever got into the river you could well find yourself spending time in hospital. The wandle really was that dirty.
Surprised and pleased that it's changed for the better. Just telling how things were just over 60 years ago
Literally just watched your video and figured although it's late I popped out to the Wandle, live right near it. Had my first ever barbel at around 4lb mark and a couple of smaller ones and a bonus chub ! If you're heading back then let me know and I'd love to join !

Rainbow aren't native, are they? Must be an escapee from somewhere. I've really enjoyed watching this. There is another great documentary - The Accidental Angler - where the chap tries to find the elusive wild brown trout in London... I'll not spoil the ending for you!

Think that the River Wandle joins the Thames opposite the South Bank not far from the London Eye.

I had what I thought was a rainbow trout in the Thames in Oxford near the confluence with the River Cherwell. Turned out it was a sea trout. Good to see the Wandle bouncing back after the pollution
Me and my brother caught some sea trout at pinkhill near eynsham one year 👍
Surprised ya didn't put a small bit of twig between the hook and the meat.. like a boily stop ..as a kid caught loads of carp on meat...with out the twig tho...comes off to easy ..use to leave it out to dry and harden up on the sides also helped
I'm so jealous! I was born and raised in Carshalton, and spent a lot of time with my grandparents in Wimbledon, less than a mile from where you are. I never had a chance to fish the Wandle, as it was nothing more than an open sewer, and I'm so pleased to see what they've done with it in recent years. I just wish I'd had the chance to do what you're doing...
Hi, Steve. I ws born and raised in Carshalton too. I was a milkman and part of my my round was along side the Wandle, and though I hadn't fished since I was a kid, I was fascinated by the cute litle river at Carshalton and Hackbridge. As you say, it's great that they've cleaned the river up since it was polluted by Industry - I can't remember the name of the main company culprit, but I heard they ware made to contribute to the clean-up. First of your videos I've seen and a good one, just a note of minor irritation to me though , Carp are coarse fish and fishing for them is also coarse fishing, just different styles from todays video, but thats just me being grumpy, a good watch.

Reminds me of my childhood back in the late 80-90s Used to be some stunning carp in the summer round by Abbey Mills
Keep up the multispecies it's good for the younger generations and you'll get a bigger audience of viewers great skills on the barbel fishing and sticking out the cold tight lines 😁😁😁

Quite right - that's had a lot to do with the demise of angling (real angling that is)
Coarse Angling in general has declined due to mud pig fishing. Some of the day ticket lakes I fished as a kid are now syndicates or have been raped by poachers
I'd rather have a big bag of silver in a session than sit waiting on that one bite.
A local pike Angler down here in Tonbridge in Kent has just caught a 45LB carp on a pike spinner can you believe that?Try to come down this way cause the rivers are absolutely full of barbel.Good video

There's barbel approaching double figures in the stretch by Morden Hall. It's also stuffed with decent sized Chub. I've also seen the odd trout and a few carp of various types including some who've clearly escaped from garden ponds! I think the fishing rights are leased out to a club although I'm not sure which one as it's out for tender atm.

I've started fishing on this exact river, but being so shallow and narrow my line and hook keep getting snagged on low lying trees or the riverbed. What's your best advice?

Great video from my local river, I usually watch Kingfishers on the Wandle. Have caught loads of trout (some big ones) further up stream. I might try for Barbel in that spot

Years ago, I was trout fishing on a river in Scotland. I didn't catch any trout, but what I did catch was about 20 or so Perch, they kept grabbing my flies, and nothing bigger that 1/2 lb., but I had a great time.
A trout non the less ....excellent paid off in the end ...nice Barbel area.

Carp fishing is course fishing. It's covered by the Trout, course and eel license.
Non course fishing is Salmon and sea trout.
