    yup, that's why the little 5watt bug tube amp (V5?) says 4ohm minimum on the back of the output!
    btw I picked this amp up
    I am blown away too. it sounded amazing right out of the box. I pulled you tubes real quick though. the stock to tube sounded pretty nice. I wasn't even going to change them but then I pulled the JJ's out of my Marshall and wow!
    super nice tones.
    I had to rebuild my whole pedal board LOL
    still need to get amp switching box. I have it rigged up to go through my pedal board or completely bypass it. the tonal possibilities on this thing are amazing I can't wait to record with it
    if you're reading this go buy it!

    This amp is incredibly loud. I played it with the master at 7 and the front knobs dimed. Nearly took my house down from the sound pressure. (Obviously I wore professional earplugs.)

    Can you get like a brown sound without boosting it?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  3 года назад +1

      It's not a real plexi, but you can get that level of gain without a boost for sure.

    hey brother so when you pulled the power tubes and went to 50watt did you change the output to 8ohms?
    you did say you have a 2x12 cab that was 16 ohm correct ?
    amp still doing ok?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  8 лет назад

      Yes I did. As far as impedance goes, you won't damage anything by running a lower impedance output into a higher impedance cab. Example: hooking a 16 ohm cab to a 4 ohm output. You will lose some output because you're sending the signal through a bigger load.
      If you do the opposite, you can burn up your output transformer. If you take a 16 ohm output and send it to a 4 ohm load, too much current is making its way back to the amp.

    I also use a volume box with my 1960 Infinium. What speakers are in your cab?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  4 года назад

      Ahh the secret sauce. That Avatar used to have V30s in it from the factory, but I swapped them many years ago with a pair of Carvin PS12 speakers. They were cheap and I wanted a more strident, clean speaker. They actually sounded really good with a lot of clean and crunch tones, but sort of boomy and soft for high gain stuff. Not dull, but that grind to the attack that a lower wattage(these are 300W each), guitar-voiced speaker has is missing.
      Why the PS12? Well, I really wanted to try the whole EVM 12L thing. Those are expensive. The poor man's version of those, according to my internet "research," was the Eminence Delta 12A. A further trip down the rabbit hole revealed that the Carvin PS12 is the poor man's Delta 12A. So, wanting to try the big, hi wattage guitar speaker thing and having almost no money to try it with brought me to the Carvins. I think I got the pair for like $120 shipped brand new on some kind of open box deal.
      A long answer.

    just got my bugera last night. on 1 the amp is ridiculously loud. i have been wondering about multi effects units plugged into it

      Jim Hirosky Well, you can plug one into it, if that's what you're wondering.

    • @jimhirosky5343
      @jimhirosky5343 7 лет назад +1

      James Junior just wondering if there is any way to split the pedal chain. some newer multi boards have a 4 chord way to split OD/comp to pre amp and chorus/flanger etc through the effects loop rear of head. guess im asking if you may have tried it

    • @jimhirosky5343
      @jimhirosky5343 7 лет назад +1

      also... how do i use the master vol only and tweak the front volumes ? is there anything special? im pressing the switch next to the master and i really cant seam to tell a difference. maybe cause the front volumes are only on 1 as well as the master?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  7 лет назад

      Jim Hirosky The 4 cable method should work fine with this amp. It has a series effects loop. About the master volume, as I explained in the video, the master on 1 is still not bedroom friendly. If you turned your volumes up a bit more and turned the master volume off with the button, there will be a much larger volume jump.

    • @jimhirosky5343
      @jimhirosky5343 7 лет назад

      James Junior seriously though. one 1 this amp is louder than my Marshall 100 watt solidstate and crate 120 watt solidstate on 5-6. is using your "trick box" there the only way to get crunchy tones ? straight guitar to amp?

    Can you tell me exactly which tubes you pulled, sorry if its a dumb question or you explained already. I can kind of see in the video but i need to be sure. Thanks.

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  7 лет назад +1

      Brandon Boe the outer pair. On an amp like this, the two outer tubes are a pair and the two inner tubes are a pair. They run in an A/B, push pull circuit, so it's recommended to pull tubes in pairs.

    Also would the volume box work on a Marshall plexi without a master volume, it does have an effects loop.

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  7 лет назад +1

      Brandon Boe yes it will. Be careful! If the pot is wonky, it may go full volume on you suddenly. It won't damage your amp, but it will damage your ears and possibly speakers.

    me again, quick question: amp still going strong?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  7 лет назад

      Nightingale1887 Yessir! Still has original tubes. Had it crankin during a band rehearsal with drums and everything. Vol. 1 and 2 around 10 o'clock, master at 7. Tubescreamer in the front. Cleaned up nicely even with EMGs. I will try and get a recording of it at the next rehearsal.
      Oh, and it was going through an old Peavey 5150 cab, with presumably stock Sheffields.

      Nightingale1887 still going strong. I still recommend a little practice amp for late nights, even with the volume box. Once I heard it without the box in the loop at gig volumes, I just couldn't play it soft anymore.

  • @AndreaMercurioMusic
    @AndreaMercurioMusic 8 лет назад

    Looks pretty clever. So you crank the amp then lower the volume from the Box ? Any risk of blowing the amp that way ?

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  8 лет назад +1

      Andrea Mercurio No. It runs in the effects loop, not between the amp and speaker. No risk of blowing the amp with this box. It lets me get more preamp distortion at a lower volume.
      This amp is so loud that even the master cranked all the way down makes it too loud for dirty sounds.

  • @tonystahl6313

    I'm a novice at best but I was watching an interview with evh he said he would crank the gain and volume to get the sound he wanted through his Marshall but it was to damn load. So he went to a radio store and asked if they had something that would control lower the watts. It would step the power down. Has anyone tried this? The video I saw of Eddie is on utube Pretty cool idea.

    • @johnnybrown9581

      He used a variac. In fact I use one too for my amp at home. I crank my master volume up to 10 and then set my volume with the variac. If I take it down to about 55 volts it’s about half the volume of my amp on 10 without the variac.

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  2 года назад

      That's crazy low. 80-90 volts is the EVH sweet spot. Make sure you rebias to account for that drop.

  • @mikeymumblesreal

    Gotta use a BOSS DS-1...this monster is too much...its like 0-100watts as soon as the volume knob becomes active...I use the top left input because you get the combination of both channels. I understand that even in some of the recent models, the cascade combination effect could only happen by using a patch cord from top right to lower left, or top left to lower right for a lesser rated output combination according to their manual. The newer ones auto do it. I'm running my analog echo into the effects loop but considering adding my Soul Food boost into the loop right before the echo and controlling the huge volume by running the amp at full, all the way up, in order to get the full gain potential from the amp, but control the level heard thru using the boost pedal gain control. I never did it yet, I'll let you know or if anyone has experience, you let me know...I'll try it later today...Pretty sure no damage is possible as Phillip McKnight shows how to do it...cheaper than a volume brakeor attenuator...god, this thing is a beast...Had Marshalls but I don't remember this kind of volume...I think the Marshall was more controllable, just as loud as it was 100watt but jeez...I wouldn't pull any tubes...that's tricky...and fingerprint oil RUINS tubes

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  8 лет назад

      Mikey Mumbles Pulling the tubes is not tricky at all. You could use a cloth or gloves if you're worried about finger oil. Eventually, you'll need to touch tubes when you replace them.
      My volume box was made with spare parts. It cost me only time.

    The device is called a variac to step down power without turning the volume down

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  6 лет назад

      Tony Stahl - a variac drops(or raises, if you want to melt stuff) the voltage going to the power transformer of the amp. It doesn’t work like a regular power attenuator does(drops the volume from the speaker outputs of the amp) or my effects loop box(drops the output level of the preamp before it hits the power section).
      It does reduce the volume, but not as efficiently and it definitely affects the tone more drastically. It can sound really cool and “squishy.” Ymmv.

  • @timothyjay2012
    @timothyjay2012 6 лет назад

    Now you know when you pull 2 tubes you have to lower you bias setting on your amp head correct?? Pulling tubes. Your 16 Cab would mean your head gets set at 8 Ohms!!! Your 8 Ohm Cab would mean your amp head is set at 4 Ohms!!! This rematches the impedance your changing in the power section. You must do this or you will FRY your Output Transformer!!!! ESPECIALLY WITH THE MASTER CRANKED UP AND YOU ATTENUATING THE SOUND WITH YOUR EFFECTS LOOP BOX. I just hate to see you cook that Badass Amp BRA!!! 😉

    • @jamesjrmusic
      @jamesjrmusic  6 лет назад

      Big Daddy Ramrod Yes I’m aware of the need to halve the impedance setting to make it match, but this is for sonic reasons. You won’t fry anything.
