PlayStation Home went into open beta late 2008, and closed early 2015. It was a strange, yet interesting service Sony offered. Many gamers easily dismiss it as a total failure, but in actuality it had a fascinating history. Filled with loyal users, successful developers, and toxicity. This is the story of PlayStation Home; dismissed but not forgotten.

The craziest thing about PlayStation Home is that kids nowadays will never know what this is. That alone simply blows my mind.

Whilst watching this video I was so glad that I was a part of PS Home when it launched. I only started playing it a month after it launched in January 2009 (since it had launched the previous month in December 2008) and I only found out this when listening to the video, otherwise I thought it had been released for ages. Even from watching videos on RUclips kids nowadays will still never be able to understand how it really felt when played. The whole experience is so nostalgic for me as it's almost been 11 years since I first played it, wow man. Plus those were the childhood/early teen years whilst I was at school so that also made it more enjoyable and memorable for me.

@@RatedRRaj Yeah I started playing in like 2011 because I didn't get a ps3 until 2010. Before that I was on xbox360. At that time I was 14 and I played it for about a year, year and a half. I was 15 when I stopped. I quit because I got way into it and I even had relationships with girls on there. They had mics and cams(PlayStation eye) so I knew they were girls. Then one day I'm like.. I can't be doing this anymore. Good times though.

I played it about a year later with my friend. I remember the LBP world distinctly but not much more, I didn't really see what to do. I think now with VR headsets they could make a VR Chat type thing. If PS Home held on a bit they could have integrated that probably.
Currently playing VR chat a bit recently with a headset and it's very similar. It's free to play on PC and you don't even need a VR headset.

Much of this is just because of nostalgia. You could make the argument games today are just money oriented and its true, but i imagine if we were still teens today, we would still dig the AAA Market nowadays. We would still play fortnite, the newest call of duty and have similiar fun times as we had back then. When you grow older, your perception simply changes. When you were younger, everything was new and exciting. Now youve seen it all and it became stale. Its just how it goes.

It was the perfect place to chill when you were bored of games. They slowly updated it and made it better and better. It got so big it felt like it's own game. They made millions, because even I spent money on some of the accessories. Playing chess, playing pool, bowling, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. I don't know why they abandoned it. Would be nice to see it come back for PS5, because gaming is getting more and more social. Would be nice to also make it compatible with VR.

There was a hub on Home when I was a kid that showed a maze in a scary theme. I spent hours failing it and finally a user lead me to the ending and we were teleported to a secret party room with a crazy floor and tons of other users. We all had so much fun chatting in the room and laughing at users who couldn't get in. The tree right outside you could glitch walk up it and teleport into the jail where people would pass by and ask how to get in there. I even found a glitch on a old promotional hub that you could use the grim reaper avatar to glide through the wall after sitting on a bench and you could get behind a counter and act like you worked there while 30+ people were gathering around asking how the hell you got back there. Some girl who was back there was making sure nobody was uploading tutorials on RUclips for it so it could be kept a secret. I miss the game so much.

PS Home was the Online Sims, that was changing every month until Sony stop supporting it, the only thing that was holding it back was the Hardware, it took really long to load the maps but when it did it was really fun, especially the bowling area with pool tables.

@@brandonbarnes8997 Yeah agree, the ps3 wasn't powerful enough to run, maybe the ps4 would of been better but they would of added more content then it would be slow again, the ps5 is probably the better place to Run because of the hardware is way more faster with its loading speed.
Sony problems is that they seem to release stuff to early, like hardware and then try to fix it though software (ps5 is going to be an awesome console), maybe they could make a PS Home 2 but doubt it.)
But least Sony takes risks tho and when they pay off, its awesome 😀
Ps4 is still an awesome console

Things dont just go bad. I have owned a gaming pc for 3 years and have never ran into a problem except a freezing game which happens on consoles too. Consoles are still PCs except with limitations. PlayStation Home is truly something that comes once in a lifetime experience. The social interaction in a whole virtual world. I never seen anything quite like it back then. I was probably one of the youngest kids on there. Talking to people that were all older than me, haha. The great memories, and meeting many people. I’ll never forget those times, the pure nostalgia.. I was a beta tester of PlayStation home from the beginning. The beta testing window was by far the best part of PlayStation home. They were considering letting people watch any movie or view any photo while in the application. I brought up to the developers that copyright laws would be very hard to get through giving that situation, we found tons of glitches and everybody was on the walls. But it was cool having a smaller close-knit community of people. It was the most social I ever got online and everybody disbanded after the beta. Good times I wish I could show what really happened during those months

I appreciate you having looked into PS Home enough to make this video. I used to be on daily with friends playing the mini games and talking, planning what game to actually hop on and play. My friends and I loved the Siren world they had among others. We all created accounts for the different regions like Japan, China and the UK just cause each version had something different and unique to it. I still talk to a few of the people I met from home and as mentioned in the video, some have left or vanished and I have no idea where they are, but I think about them cause they were all fun and good company. It was a hub for gamers to meet gamers and build a stronger community.
PS Home was VRChat before VR and VRChat lol. I'm sure if Sony took Home seriously and tried to bring it back in modern times especially with VR (which I know would be a whole "issue" itself) it would still be profitable if that's what they go for not to mention them now branching into PC territory with Steam releases. I definitely would get back on Home if they brought it back and be back in VR if they made it that way. I have fond memories of it and never really had much of an issue with the Home Bodies (the ones who "lived" there) cause I was somewhat of a Home Body myself. I know they won't bring it back especially with Nebula Realms being a very poor "version" of a Home replacement, but, I'd like to dream.
Shout out to the loyal PS Home folks!

I have so many great memories of this game. Spending time playing games in the arcade, watching e3 at the theatre, hanging out with my friends at the halloween park. So good. Hoping of hoke with some new buddies to play multiplayer was so much fun.

Home was amazing. Such a shame it's gone. The bowling alley and the theatre were my go to hang out spots haha

Because me and a close friend of mine that I’ve known for 20 years that I used to live with for a handful of years as well before I moved out onto my own own, me and him for at least a good 7 to 8 years at least, were bowlers, we probably still have it in us to bowl, like getting back out onto the lanes with the balls that we still have the bowl with, but me and him every now and then used to spend time going on the home and just going straight to the bowling alley and trying to perfect timing and the gauge in order to hit the comma pocket as they called it in bowling, and just enjoy bowling in the bowling alley, at least when I was visiting him at his parents house when he still lived there, and we’d hang out in his room for quite a while, just hoping that there was an open lane and me and him would set ourselves up, and just bowl game after game after game after game, for a while and just enjoy it.
I myself had a really nice apartment type place, and besides the items you could wear that you won through like the game trophies, I myself ended up buying personalized items overtime for my apartment I believe it was that I owned on there, but yeah, I ended up buying some of my own things as well too.
