Opening Quote: Front Line Assembly//Toxic
To be fair, rats are a quick and clever bunch. I often lose knife fights against them. The scars are a reminder of how far I still have to go.
Charlie?
I hear your wife used to be quite the town tart.
Who are you, shredder? lol
Get stronger, faster, harder, rattier.
The trick is to learn to wield the knife with your toes.
The Fallout 2 instruction manual was really cool- it summarized the canon ending for Fallout 1 from the Vault Dwellers perspective. It's a good read for anyone who enjoyed the first two games
Grim Beard. Grim Beard never changes.
Which is to say he consistently puts out high-quality, fun, informative, interesting work.
agreed.
Fallout is a okay-isch game.
I've played it - like - 23 times.
So happy you gave the historical context. People always skip that in reviews.
And I'm surprised you knew so much, you should try reviewing other old-school RPGs.
And finally someone mentioned the ambient sounds! They are sooo... good!
I find the old isometric style to be very charming. I grew up on Age of Empires II and I love games in that style.
He used Google like anyone else.
A youtube notification? But...I only have notifications activated for _one_ channel. . .
*gasps*
It’s time. . .
_for GrimBeard_
xD Are you me?!
Chair yes. Yes I am.
I had a friend who genuinely confused Fallout and Flatout games. Needless to say, he was very surprised upon hearing my tales of post-nuclear adventures in the games he perceived as arcade racings.
Solid video, btw. I really dig your style.
@@stupid90able It's surprising nobody sued anybody about the similarities in the names.
That story about the circumstances of SPECIALs creation was amazing
I see that Six String Samurai reference
I appreciate that reference
Adrian Couso I figured their would be at least one
I remember I used sneak a lot. That way I stole from every guard, vendor, everybody that had a weapon, and armed myself to the teeth.
I felt the timer was not strict at all at the end. I explored everything the game had to offer, with a lot of ample time to spare (and I usually take my time in the most ineficient route).
A video that is simply magnificent, as always!
I like New Vegas, and hadn't played the original fallout until finishing it a few nights ago. I still like new vegas, but I wouldn't put it, even it's best parts (Dead Money, Old World Blues, Vault 22, imo) above the best parts of the original fallout. The last parts I played in fallout were the glow, the boneyard, the military base, and the cathedral. I really enjoyed exploring these once normal and now horrifying places and confronting each of the nightmares in the basement. I got the same feeling playing through those sections of Fallout that I do from my favorite sections of NV. Also, the ambient music (shut off the radio) in NV is really good, but much of it is copied from Fallout's music.
New Vegas is one of my favorite games. Games I really enjoy and replay from time to time. Even though I'm not charmed by the view point, graphics, talking heads, and turn based combat (okay, the heads are a little charming), I'd still say Fallout is overall better than New Vegas. I respect it's originality, and that without it NV wouldn't exist or would be very different. This is only based off of my feelings after finishing Fallout for the first time, but I think I have a new game in my favorites.
If anyone else watched this video and wants to try the game out, you should consider using Fallout Fixt, a fan made bug patch with optional extra features.
just wanna let ya know yr the best youtuber in the game
Game? What game?! Oh my god am i stuck in a game?! Oh no how will i be able to redo
Quarren Everett - I was just about to break the news that GrimBeard is not, as far as I can tell, a really creative and engaging NPC but an actual person. With real wants, needs and body count.
Lemme just double that. I found him looking for a BloodRayne review and now I’m binge watching all his videos.
@@meanpillscasper I know the feeling
Game... Is good...
I am very proud of this: during my play-through I got all the companions, and kept them all alive the entire game, even Dogmeat, who I could not tell to wait outside the very dangerous final "dungeon". I consider this the canon ending.
not according to the fallout 2 manual... i'll leave :(
Tim Cain himself was the one who noticed the first letter of the attributes could be arranged into an acronym. The word he came up with was ACELIPS. It was quickly rearranged into SPECIAL.
Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees😂😂😂 Great trivia my the way!
first fallout game was the third in the series, this this year got me a nice laptop and decided to give the original a try and man I am glad I did!! yes it's difficult, and no it doesn't fully hold your hand lol. But I absolutely love it and appreciate it's story and gameplay compared to the newer games. just started tactics and to me seems to be more brutal.
I remember my first time playing about a year ago I came across a tipped over truck in a random encounter and found 8000 caps right after leaving shady sands for the first time. Felt real good
Must have had high luck.
Oh my word, a half-hour Grimbeard video about one of my favorite games! Be still my heart.
It's been a good night drinking in Texas, I admit that, but amid a fan-fucking-tastic evening, this upload is the only nightcap I need.
I remember playing this when it first came out, I had never played a point and click. I fell in love with it. Such a wonderful world from Sandy Shores to the HUB it was just perfect. When people tell me fallout3 is the best, I ask them have you ever played the original? No one, who played the original doesn't agree its the best. Both of the original 1& 2 are phenomenal, New Vegas is my console favorite
So, when can I expect my Planescape: Torment review?
Also, I see you saw *Six-String Samurai*. To quote Milhouse:
“I thought I was the only one.”
“So this is what it feels like ... when doves cry.”
That being said, I wanted know what you think of New Vegas, being that it's made & written by the Original Fallout, Planescape: Torment, and Vampire: Bloodlines crew.
That review's tattooed on Grim Beard's back. Spine reveal at 10k subs.
In 5 years!
Top tier content as always. Love that you made it longer than usual. 10/10
I never had problems with the timer in the game. I did all the side quests and everything the game had to offer. This was my favorite story in the fallout franchise.
GAME

YOU"RE ALL ASLEEP!!
Even though I already know about it, I never tire ov hearing about how they used clay sculptures to animate the character portraits. That's so cool!! Grimbeard, what's the name of that manga @ 29:26?
Western Esper It's a Korean series called Under The Glass Moon. I found them randomly in a Japanese market and loved the artwork.
I played Fallout 3 and NV first, and I still love F2 most of all the games.
And rightly so, good for you. Unfortunately most of the people will take shiny 3D action flick over quality RPG that doesn't insult your intelligence.
Hearing these Industrial snippets reminds me how much I enjoyed the genre. I think I need to start modding in some Black Lung and Beefcake in to my Dwemer dungeons
I may not be a fan of the original Fallout game. Played it back in the day but I usually have a hard time on CRPG type games. But I man how I loved the art-style, the music, the whole fuckin' universe they've build.
My intro to Fallout was 3. I really liked Fallout 3 and so I got 1 & 2. I loved them both. 1 even more than 2 for some reason. Completed it maybe 3 times.
I really don't understand people who can't tolerate old games...
New Vegas is my favourite though.
Also I see you are using the unofficial patches, based on that extended "toolbar" graphics for higher resolutions, rather than just being lazy and using the gog version.
Also, are you using unlicensed Microsoft Office? 😜 (Red title bar).
the way you explained how many fallout fans were confused by the other games was perfect. that's how i felt when i tried this game out as a kid and was very confused and frustrated by the amount of information for me to ingest. definitely going to try to get into it again
I only just discovered your channel a few days ago, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Also, love the clips from Hardware that you sneak in periodically.
Really good job, dude! Nice review! This makes me want to try it. Rarely do I see an old game review that actually helps or warms the person up to it so they know how to go about starting.
15:17 - The TARDIS shows up in Fallout?
Old Fallouts had loads of references. Among my favourites is a bridgekeeper from the Monty Pythons. He has a dope combat robe too.
I get annoyed by those reviews, but then I remember that they're probably written by literal children, and telling them that Fallout is a "classic RPG masterpiece" or w/e is pretty much like when my dad tells me that Jeremiah Johnson is the best movie ever made and my eyes instantly glaze over. And the fact that they even bothered to play it at all is actually pretty impressive because I still haven't sat through more than 15 minutes of Jeremiah Johnson.
My first personal experience with the original Fallout was in 2008 (I was in 10th grade) when the new game just came out and everyone was talking about it.
Before that I've only actually played the demo for Fallout Tactics back in 2003 and thought it was really interesting and the music was fantastic.
I love post-apocalyptic fiction so it immediately appealed to me, though I wouldn't have the opportunity to seriously play any of these games until way later.
What can I say I was poor and still sniffing bread -crumbs off the table. =)
When I first played the original Fallout it was like love at first click, from the foreboding intro narrated by Ron Pearlman to the eerie music in the background laying the foundation of a world glazed in post-cold world paranoia, I was ENTRANCED @_@ especially playing at 2:00 AM.
I've had an insane love for games with isometric perspectives with pre-rendered visuals ever since I played the original Diablo as well StarCraft and Sanitarium so when I got to Fallout, it looked like the perfect game I've envisioned for years.
I absolutely hate tutorials in video games and I'm of the opinion that a game's interface should always be laid out in a logical way that teaches through visuals and player agency and the developers should trust the logic and capabilities of the player.
I didn't even need to read a manual to learn all the actual controls because it used a lot of standardized features like space to enter combat, I for inventory, shift to run, etc and some where even displayed in menus.
And you always had F1 for the Help Reference menu, which a lot of DOS games especially shareware titles used and I think it's a much superior way to inform the player and get pesky BORING tutorials out of the way.
And since the entire game has a logical mouse driven interface there was nothing I considered to be bad or problematic.
I guess my only complaint was the inventory. Not because it was bad or non-functional, but because I prefer a grid-styled interface a'la old-school X-Com and Diablo and the list style one in Fallout didn't do it for me.
Another thing I almost entirely disagree was the time limit feature the original game had.
I'm one of those that actually likes it, since it puts much more weight to the severity of the situation.
Not that I dislike having the freedom to explore and do stuff at my own pace but when you aren't put in a situation to care about the story especially in open-world RPGs you might as well not have it.
Bethesda is seriously TERRIBLE at this, Fallout 4 is a great example of this.
Also I think 120 days that are originally given to you in the game is more than enough to find the water chip and 500 days to find the mutant base and destroy the master.
To me because Fallout has so many choices and consequences and endings on top of that, encourages replay value to see all of the differences.
So in my opinion the time limit is far from being a detriment, because it makes you actually care for what you are doing.
That Beard is indeed Grim
you should write a diary about it
Every single time you pop up with a new video, I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
I think this is the episode that birthed the "Bitter Recompense" section of Grim's video review style! Perfection!
We demand a 5k subscribers foot reveal!!!
Dane Swanger this
I'm pretty sure I already jumped the gun on that in an earlier video. It was like a bit where I was hanging myself and I was bare-tootsies. I regret it :/
Grim Beard well dang... guess we gotta rethink our list of demands...
i want a reveal of his beard if he has one, does he live up to the username? is his beard really grim? does he even have a beard? so many questions
12:47 is that a muhfuggin' Six String Samurai clip? Everyone please check this movie out, its such a classic of surreal, post-apocalyptic storytelling akin to 'A Boy and His Dog' but with a bit more cold war humor and satire.
Hell yes, if you're a fan of music especially you should check it out. Absolute classic.
How in the hell are u not as successful as you tubers ur twice as funny as. Ur one of my favorite youtubers. It's straight up bull that u don't get the recognition u deserve
Random cut to Front Line Assembly and Hardware?! i approve!
I love how the reviewer with a Sam & Max avatar refers to point-and-click adventures as "a moving with mouse (but kind of diablo style) kind of RPG game". Also, Pokemon Sun and Moon is a better RPG, than Fallout? Sounds like a must play for old-school CRPG fans.
The retarded nature of those reviews are an offense to ones intelligence.
I barely stopped myself from writing them a response that Leisure Suit Larry 4 is the Dark Souls of Diablo-likes. It kept turning into speculation on why they'd pick a cartoon rabbit with jagged teeth for an avatar without knowing that it's actually a hyperkinetic rabbity thing, though, and I didn't want to be _that_ mean.
You're too humble :)).
Let your inner kek thrive.
Oh, shit. I just now looked to the left on the notification and saw a good chunk of my childhood.
Lol ^_^.
Same here, i first played fallout tactics and loved it. Perfection for me is fallout tactics mechanics mixed with heavy rpg element from fallout 1 and 2
No joke big fan of yours, love the channel, you remind me of my love for pc game collecting, and thank god you finally review FALLOUT! ^^
Pickles Mcgee Thanks for the kind words!
Fallout is a game you can just replay forever.
I've lost count the number of playthroughs I've had of Fallout 1 & 2 - they are however always installed on whatever desktop I've owned and I will every six months or so return to the original Fallouts.
Alongside Deus Ex (which is also permanently installed on my desktop) they're some of the best games ever made with not much in the way to compete with them 25+ years later.
As a huge music head, like much more than i am a gamer, i fucking LOVED the sound design. The ambient soundtrack is my favorite of any video game ever.
This, and the original Devil May Cry for me. I love creepy, atmospheric ambient music
Oh holy shit, I never thought I'd see somebody use a clip from Delicatessen, ty man
Thanks man, really appreciate your content. What I really like is that you don’t take it too seriously, but provide super insightful historical comments at the same time.
Coming back to this after the Fallout 2 review, great channel and great content!
Oh man. You have a boxed copy of Iron Storm? Maybe you have Bet on Soldier too?
I am hoping some of the great creators covering forgotten weird games will pick B.o.S up some day and make a video about it.
I have some strong nostalgia for that game.
I still remember old days when Fallout3 was released and people laughed at fans of old that "they hate this game because it's not isometric, lol" while videos like these say something else - FO3 was not a good Fallout game. Sure, for mindless wandering, filling XP bars, crafting and shootin stuff it was ok. But everything else? nah
But Fallout NV proved that perspective wasn't an issue but everything else.
Years later there was only few games worth being Fallout successor, like Underrail and maybe Marauder - Man of Prey.
Yep, New Vegas showed that it is still possible to do a proper Fallout game with that game engine, if you actually understand Fallout, which is something Bethesda doesn't. Gotta agree on Marauder and Underrail as well.
oblout was not a game
still isn't one
there is no gameplay
new vegas is same shit. with same bugs and more. literally unfinishable to this day with main quests being broken. you have to fire up realtime dev tools to force finish broken quests
@tsartomato As someone who has finished New Vegas, watched people finish New Vegas, and even finished modded New Vegas, I'll have to attest that you're literally wrong.
@@elelyon4570 just google all bugs, you and your friend kolya isn't equal everyone
@tsartomato Buggy? Yeah. The best Fallout game? Also yeah. The best Fallout mods? Also yeah. That it takes three to six bugfixing mods to cover them all is proof that it's a very buggy game. Unfinishable? Literally incorrect, on any system; I've accomplished it unpatched on console, somehow, and a few times on PC. One time, I had my game break due to mods, but it broke in a way that turned my character into a hybrid of Flash and Superman through the power of permanent Jet and Psycho in magnificent overdoses, and I don't know how that happened. But that was one time!
Also, nobody here's my friend. Let's get that straight.
14:41 This is how I run in my nightmares as I'm being chased.
Oh man. New Grimbeard, its fallout AND review reactions. Now this is my kind of thing!
I'll always remember when my dogmeat kept walking into a force field and was vaporized. I'm pretty sure we weren't even in combat so it just made it extra funny.
GrimBeard, you can review "Thief" games, what do you think?)
Loreence Schick you got your wish, he just uploaded a Thief review yesterday
You've gotta lotta great content, bro.
Story: 3:55
Gameplay: 9:29
Sight/Sound: 17:52
Bro... Seriously I love your content. I'm not joking when I say this, I can't fall asleep to people talking and you have been my bed time relaxing host. I'm paying attention, getting tired as hell, and just in a trance falling sleep on my couch. I sleep freaking deeply falling sleep to your videos. I don't understand it. They aren't boring by any stretch. I love your humor and pacing.
I'm seriously not giving you a back handed compliment! I love watching, but for some reason I can totally relax and fall asleep to them. I love it, because sleep has been a bitch to find lately. Keep doing your thing. You seriously deserve a massive following!
Lol same. I never got into the whole ASMR thing, but some of these reviewers did it for me!
12:48 Rewatching, and... Six String Samurai... OMFG
The fallout 1 soundtrack inspired me to create a similar but original ambience for the new fallout games.
jesus man , it was a surprise seen you covered fallout , by far my favorite franchise ... and i really fucking love the ending , fallout 1 is a amazing game and a really fun and addicted rpg even to this day (fallout 2 is by far my favorite) . jesus man , this video is amazing , good fucking work .
21:30 I was listening Fallout ost yesterday before going to bed. I love that OST. It's a shame that new Fallout games dropped the ball in this regard.
I loved that New Vegas used the music from the old games. Roaming the Mojave (with the radio off) to have Metallic monks or Dream town start playing... Ahh. Just perfect.
"in this regard." and every other for that matter.
IMHO Gun feel in Fallout 4 is the best in the series.
Sadly most of the music in it was ripped off
Same. Can't stand most of Inon Zur's work, with the exception of Doc Mitchell's theme and Mutant Massacre.
"Two examples is good" is a joke template i use to this very day. Never fails to illicit a laugh from my cat.
As soon as you said "...having said that" I knew this is gonna be good.
What was the comic he was reading its in the back of my mind but i just cant put my finger on it.
i remember the first time i played it was in 2013 on a moderate laptop with no access to the internet because i was in the middle of the desert on a military base, and obviously i didn't got the controls, but it kept me intrigued to try and clicking stuff just to see what is responsive, i still love the pip boy that has some panels that are ripped off at the screen where you see the number of days the main quest has (i could be wrong about this).
but after 8 minutes i figured stuff up, was impressed when you could aim at specific body parts, played the hell out of it and finished it.
then i started again and tried to take the lowest intelligence and it ended up with troglodyte of a character, the Hand to Hand at higher levels is the most overpowered skill ever made.
I love the OST, the OST is a feeling, that can be only described as a high alcohol, unfiltered muddy beer sitting on a the wasteland desert.
it was so good i kind'a fear to play Fallout 2 because it is said to be the best CRPG ever made.
i played it in 2016 but for some reason didn't finished it.
Great video! I like that you are not sticking only with adventure games. I don't mind it, but it's good for your channel (i think). Keep up the great work!
You should review Fallout 2 and Arcanum. I finished playing through Arcanum for the first time recently and I was amazed by how great it was. I guess I shouldn't have been since it was made by the same people that made fallout 1 and 2 but hardly anyone talks about it anymore.
yoooooo Arcanum is what's up!
Thumbs up for the '6-String Samurai' reference :D
12:48 Hell yeah! Six String Samurai! Love that movie.
Have you done the new wasteland remake? I think it's a good way to relate to style of play to a new generation. I feel like this game didnt age as well as I thought.
you are seriously the most underrated youtuber ive become a fan of. keep up the great work your content is perfect 💖
It must be horrifying to be a young intelligent person in todays insane society. I am glad to be old and out of it. The world has changed to the point I feel like someone from a Fallout game.
It was great to see a new video from you. Keep up the strong work!
I agree, I am 23 and nowadays its like everything got dumbed down artificially for years already. I have a great PC but cinema and game industry seem to have suffered a sudden retardation nearly without any exception. Honestly? I dont recognize this world anymore, its nowhere close to that what we had in the 1990-2000s and hopes I had about the future games and films back then.
You are partially right, I respect your point here, but however one thing remains. The games are made by the same scheme now, you can guess how many first AIDs gonna be right the next corner and how exactly hard will be a boss and everything.
As if a game are made by the machines, scenarist machine, game-design machine, then shipped to be walkthroughed by a player who is made into a bored playing machine in his turn.
This said after playing console exclusives and pretty much all games after 2012.
The AAA are so generic that I discovered a talent of clearvoyance in me, guessing turns of plot, reaction of the protagonists, outcome of the story...
And I am not saying about the primitive plots and generic ingame situations. I don't demand complex mindfucking philosophies too at the same time.
holy fucking cringe lmao
What the fuck are you talking about
This is one that I wanted so much to get into, but I had a lot of issues with the point-based combat system. I got wrecked right out of the vault. But thankfully, you explained this to me! It's like Jagged Alliance - great game, but someone just needs to explain shit to me.
Arcanum - that was a stellar RPG. Loved applying a personality trait to my character and an intelligence that actually affected gameplay and NPC interactions.
I really enjoyed the challenge presented by the countdown.. One of my fondest gaming memories is completing that first try. Very satisfying!
I would love to see you do a review of Age of Decadence since it shares so much of Fallout's design.
Callaxes I had not heard of this one! I'm definitely interested and will add it to my list. Thanks for the suggestion
I used to follow the developers way back when it was still just an idea. The development started way before Kickstarter and social media was such a major boon for indie gaming and unfortunately the team never got arround to using these platforms effectively which is why this forgotten gem is pretty much forgotten :(
The song in the credits this time is "Nobody Can Hear You".
I had to double take the Empire Earth PC case. I only saw a caught a passing glance, and knew. I had to back up! I had the very same one growing up.
Just discovered your channel.
Realy like your style, your music is cool too. 'going to binge watch your stuff and upvote youre videos :)
Thanks! :)
Yay! New video! :) Thank you for all your hard work man!
I think the newer XCOM's and XCOM-likes did a good job of having people like isometric turn-based again.
9:45 Good thing they stuck with their guns. Baldur's Gate's and Arcanum's real-time turn-based combat turned out so great.
Did I see some Junjo It on your book shelf? My man!
Still blows my mind that Fallout is so mainstream these days. I remember pretty much creaming myself when I saw Fallout 3 advertised on the side of a bus, pretty much no one I knew had played the originals.
First Fallouts are great. Biggest problem in them imo is that user interaction is bit bizarre time to time (like when to use science etc.). Like repairing lightbarrier to open it. Also many of the interracteable devices etc. are quite hidden in gameworld. It would greatly benefit from modern "press button to reveal elements in gameworld" like early Baldurs Gate titles have. This is especially true with modern displays. Just recently played one and constantly were in verge of missing ammo boxes etc.
Btw I never realized it was Pearlman who did the intro speech. Had to check out and still it doesn't like he's today to me.
You deserve way more subs. Keep up the great work man.
Thank you for understanding my love of what this ip was
Hey have you played Darkwood yet, I think you should try it
Thank you for this killer review, it was spot on. Fallout is inded a stone cold classic, period. The memories for me are good, I watched my friend play this on his grandma's pc back in 1999, and the atmosphere was so new and different it was mesmerizing. It's time for me to actually play this. Thank you Grim!
I'm so happy I discovered this channel
Fallout's perspective isn't isometric but rather cavalier oblique.
"no direction"
I'LL GIVE YOU A DIRECTION: DUE EAST
JUST GO EAST
IT'S RIGHT THERE ON THE MAP
YOU'RE TOLD EXACTLY WHERE TO GO
CLICK THE VAULT 15 BUTTON AND GO EAST AUTOMATICALLY
The time limit did stress me out a little but luckily I played fallout 1 in 2022 for the first time and I already had practice playing Pathfinder Kingmaker with crazy and insane time limits. And both are CRPGs so I wasn't that out of my element in getting around and understanding mechanics in this. I do wish the AI was better, too many times Ian went into melee with his fists but that's just a limit to good old 1997.
YOURE ALL ASLEEP! Why does that make me laugh so hard?
Everyone talks about Tim Cain, but no one talks about the real MVP Leonard Boyarsky
Please make a video about Fallout tactics too, that was my first Fallout game too. Well I had seen my older brother play F1 and 2 but first time I got my own hands in the game was with Tactics.
I thought only I knew about Six String Samurai... You're awesome.
Would love to hear your thoughts on divinity original sin 1 and or 2. Your clearly a big fan of old school crpg, and I feel like divinity does a great job of making that style game more accessible to modern gamers new to the genre, which I was. Be really interesting to hear your take on it though, curious if you would agree
Yo that looks like my barns and noble from when I was little is that one in Geneva commons?
9:30 in
