The fact that Bloodrayne has such a lasting impression on people and yet we never got to see it evolve into essentially the West's counterpart to Bayonetta or DMC is heartbreaking.

I absolutely agree! I've always felt like we've ended up living in this weird timeline where developers failed to expand on the flippin awe-inspiringly incredible idea of BloodRayne... Like, the first game is such a vibe, main menu felt like diving into some underground sh1t I probably shouldn't as a kid, The setting is grimy&dark, feels sort of morbid and BloodRayne's arguably one of the most awesome designs ever! I Love it! I dunno, I think some geewd stuff is created whenever there's really spirit behind it, but if not, well, y'know...!^^'\\.

@@TomyIneXtriCable Agree with that. Our Timeline completely failed Rayne. Same counts for Rubi Malone frome WET. Both have so much going on and are just amazing characters!!! but because of their tiny niches they appeal to, they never got much of a chance. Rayne at least got a sequel and has a good chance of getting a future game, or remake. Rubi on the other hand got completely abandoned with the cancelation of her sequel in 2010.
Im big fan of both, but only learned about those games few years ago. It just feels so wrong how underappreciated they are. They ooze of stile, fun and badassery.

It’s not really mentioned these days but I remember in vampire media they used to specify it was running water like streams (when not discussing holy water) that vampires had issue with though in that case it was a barrier they couldn’t cross rather than a corrosive agent. Playing Sekiro led me to find out how the concept of running water as a cleansing element is present in different cultures so perhaps the folklore of the vampire incorporates that.

    • @andrzejnadgirl2029
      @andrzejnadgirl2029 Год назад +12

As someone from from a country where vampires actually were a part of folklore, yup, it always was a thing.
Overall good properties of running water come from pretty obvious, practical thing. It was historically fine to drink it without boiling that kind of water, at least until rivers weren't heavily polluted. Water from swamps, bogs etc. was guaranteed diarrhea.
Also, when it's not fully understood, Slavs liked to settle near swamps, most likely due to the religious reasons so some religious warnings, boogyeman stories to warn children about swamp dangers really had to be widespread.

The one hit kill at 16:00 is caused by a bug in the charge attack of that enemy type. You can fix it by capping the game to 30 fps.

I also like how the exact same castle from Nocturne appears in Bloodrayne as well. And not just the castle itself, you also look for the same artifact, the vampire holy grail. In Nocturne, Stranger and Svetlana left it there for the vampires. Now both Rayne and the germans looking for it there. Maybe its not a direct sequel, but I really like these small details. Same with the Blair Witch games.

there is no "precise" definition of what "running water" means...probably means anything that is not a swamp (as sea DO move...).
it would actually make sense as culturally human understood pretty soon that running water is more "clean"(as in probably potable, and in the case of the sea with food in it) than stagnant water.

Witches continuing life after death is a common element in folklore, it's present in Swedish folklore, German folklore and east European folklore ( the Strigoi mort should be something like that.)

I have such fond nostalgic memories of this game. I still have my original ps2 copy. I remember seeing in the video shop (like the U.S's blockbuster) and thinking oh thats not my kind of game it will be to hard. I hired it anyway and found I was quite competent at the game and loved it. When I returned the game I said jokingly to guy I like it so much I wanted to buy it. He turned to his manager asked if it was ok and the manager just coolly waved like yeah she can buy it. I got it for like $10 (New Zealand Dollars, which is like $5-$6 in the U.S by todays current conversions). I loved Rayne so much back then. Her and Xena are to me, what batman and superman are to some people. They were the heros of my youth lol. The music was awesome to and I still have the tracks I got off limewire that I still listen to lol. I think we all have those games that we played when we were younger that will forever be in our hearts and this game is one of those for me along with the likes of FF7, Legend of Dragoon, Crash Bandicoot and might & Magic 6.
I can still hear the daemites saying things "like I wear you like Lederhosen" or Rayne when she jumps out of the truck at germany saying "Thanks for the ride Fucko". The Soldiers screaming "Get this bitch off me" while feeding on them. I think I need to dust of my ps2 now just so I can ply again.
Loved the second game to. No interest in the side scroller that came out. Always said if I had the money I would make the third game happen.
I knew nothing of Nocturne till watching this vid and intend on changing that.

I've encountered this game when i was still young in my gamer days. I was scared, aroused, hyped, repulsed at the same time. I was genuinely struggling with the first chapter, partially because everything scared my soul out of my body, and partially because the translation was done poorly and i barely understood where to go and what to do. After a long, long time, a couple of cheat attempts and one trainer program, i finally got to the chapter's boss and beat it. Only then i realized that this wasn't the entire game, and that the rest of it is about fighting mostly nazis. I clearly remember being both disappointed and curious. In the end, i liked this game a lot.

    Are you me?
Except for not playing Nocturne, your thoughts on the game are same as mine.
I too find the game to be mindless good fun, with combat that, despite being wonky, somehow feels fun. Lore/story is interesting, but it's carrier to fun and varied encounters. *I am a big fan of the Blade/Matrix era style music* . Max Payne parallel is apt. Rayne is 10/10 a badass character with lot of potential (and some great fan art/cosplay behind it).
I think that Rayne is OP in the sense that she always has the upper hand in most situations, which is only disturbed when game designers forget to make balance adjustments (1KO creatures, low ammo in certain encounters).
I haven't played Bloodranye II, so I'm eager to see how that turns out.

I wouldn't say the Feed mechanic was well done. It's fun, don't get me wrong. But it breaks the game in a lot of situations. If you can drain someone it's usually the most efficient way to kill them; it stuns them, rapidly heals Rayne, provides a shield, lets you keep shooting, looks hot and can even be done from range with chain. Many situations can be resolved by just hopping from dude to dude like a sorority girl on Friday night. The only reason not to use it is if you wanna spice things up in a fight. Funnily enough, the main way the game adds challenge is by throwing dudes at you that can't be drained.

This, along with Legacy of Kain is my very favorite game series. I ADORE the second game and learned the Bladed Tonfa fighting style irl because of Rayne. I pray the series gets a reboot. It's a vastly underrated game and Rayne herself is ICONIC, easily on the level of Laura Croft. The Character, not the game. Lol However BR 2 is AMAZING and the combat far ahead of it's time. There are fighting games now that dont control like BR 2 did. Anyways, love this review!

The game does explain that due to being a dampir, she doesn’t have the aversion to holy or sacred relics like full vampires do.

I loved Bloodrayne 1 for the slow motion mode, limb removal (especially with powerful weapons) and the overall gore. It was pure fun to just go on the rampage, similarly to [PROTOTYPE]. Everything else was a bonus. Although I do admit I liked fighting human enemies more than anything (and their reactions felt very realistic).

I had this game for Xbox. I found it quite difficult. I also remember there was a clothing/weapons mod for Morrowind that had BloodRayne's outfit and blades, which also increased your movement speed and jump height. Playing Morrowind as BloodRayne was fun.

@grimbeard To answer your question @16:00 this is unfortunately apart of the original game, it happens on the GC port as well, their attack animation is quite literally the running animation, as the hands are sort of acting as giant cheese graters. his hands brushed you really fast an the damage added up before you could react. its a means of making you keep your distance or something, IDK what the devs were thinking with that. Even more annoying when you face Hedrox the infinite as he does the same thing, but over 9000!!!.

BloodRayne is practically linked to Nocturne because of a mentioning of a half-sister, Castle Gaustadt and Voicu, the Yathgy being Beliar's heart and Kagan accusing Sir Tremayne of stealing another like Rayne from part 2, which makes one wonder if he had connections with Spookhouse, like maybe he was a British liaison to Spookhouse while a secret member of the Brimstone Society and supervised Svetlana's training at his place (1919-1924 I'm guessing) before she officially joined Spookhouse, and like Rayne before getting an invitation at the beginning of BR1, knew nothing of the Brimstone Society. Svetlana was no doubt a teenager when she met Rayne as a little girl. I do remember Svetlana mentioning that she didn't know her vampire father, so maybe Mynce did and maybe the mentioning of the "half-sister" was a clue for Rayne. That maybe Svetlana and Rayne didn't know they were related at first. Also, what if Doc Holliday's Charged Radiance Emitter or Sun of God was an earlier version of the technology that the Vesper Shard was based on.
