Thr McPlant was released while I (a lifelong veggie) was writing up my PhD thesis and working like 16 hours a day on it. I became kinda addicted to them and am still trying to kick the habit! I'm down to one or two a month though so not terrible. I will have to pop into Greggs this month before that pasty disappears again, looks yummy. Its still bonkers to me how many options are out there for vegetarian and vegan food now compared to the 90s. When I was a kid all I could eat in McDonald's was fries and they were probably cooked in animal fat 😂 BK did a spicy bean buger which was amazing and vegetarian society approved though, I miss that. The Subway veggie patty was super exciting for me when I was a teenager. Day to day I don't eat many meat substitutes due to cost and health, but generally they taste OK to me as I've not had the real thing! Vegan cheese is one thing I've never got to grips with because I do usually eat dairy. When I need to cook dairy free due to my mom's allergies I go for cuisines which use very little dairy to begin with for better results.
The substitutes have been really good for a long time, but they are getting to a point now where it's near indistinguishable. I'm losing my memory of how real meat tastes after 16 years but my meat eating family assure me that most substitutes taste just as good, if not better than the real thing. Common praise is that it tastes the same but less greasy/fatty.
@@GiraffeCubed some meat substitutes are unpleasant to me texture wise so maybe they have got almost too good? Richmond meat free sausages actually confused my meat loving other half who saw them in the pan- I wasn't a fan of the skin on them in particular!!
The worst part about Veganuary is that a lot of these options are only around for a month. As a herbivore, my New Year's diet always starts in February!
Me too. I used to love a Sub but not had one for months since they took the vegan meat options away, its either a patty now or just salad and cheese, not good, we are going backwards! The vegan steak and meatballs used to be very good. Not sure why they have taken these away when more and more people are going vegi/vegan.
I would point out the vast majority of vegan fast food isn't actually vegan as it gets contaminated with meat at some point during the cooking process. The chances are very high with deep fat fryers that they dont use seperate oil.
I know McDonald's cooks the mcplant separately but Burger King doesn't cook their vegan burger separately. I never go to Subway either because they touch the vegetables with the same meat and dairy gloves.
I think it would be quite interesting to see you recreate the lower-scored items and improve the taste/quality while keeping them vegan! Those vegetable dippers at McDonald’s looked so interesting!
ive stopped eating at most fast food places, but oh my do i miss the vegan chicken royale at burger king 😭😭 they used to do vegan nuggets as well !! subway used to do vegan chicken as well it sooo great im so sad they discounted it so quickly
Honestly your best bet at Subway is a veggie delite, just bread with all the veg and your choice of sauce. Issue for me is my local store charge 8-9 quid for it, it's just bread with the veg that comes FREE on every other sub. So really it's a 8-9 quid bit of bread. I've stopped going.
As someone who has to now go for vegan alternatives when it comes to dairy products, I have experienced a few vegan cheeses and I am never impressed. I have recently had a lovely yoghurt from Tesco by the Coconut Collaborative. If anyone does need any good vegan yoghurt, that one is pretty bang on. Specifically the Mango and Passionfruit flavour. I am disappointed at the lack of meatless meatball at subway, they were pretty good too (but could have been due to their insane sauce coverage)
Only vegan thing i would actively search out if it wasn’t so bloody expensive is vegan jerky… got a sample at a festival once and it was actually great. Better for keeping in your pocket for long periods too.

I'm not vegan, but I had eaten no mammal meat for almost 15 years, until just after Christmas when I gave in to a craving for a cheeseburger. Since then, I've eaten 5 cheeseburgers.
The Vegan Royale is quite good. Wasn't a fan of the McPlant, I didn't mind the KFC offering. I do miss spicy beanburgers from BK. I was vegan in the past, I don't get on stomach wise with a lot of fake meats as they tend to have pea protein which I am sensitive to. Homemade lentil soup for the win!
It's refreshing to hear someone who doesn't try to force their views on others I had to become vegetarian years as my stomach had severe digestion problems and I can't digest meat properly x
Again some places are ok for meat free products but others don’t have a clue I ordered a vegan burger substitute of a meat burger and it was just rice and sweet corn and carrots in fried breadcrumbs .now Linda McCartney Cham burgers look like burger meat with mozzarella cheese mixed in those are delicious on a burger bun with salad and sauce
Another fascinating video. Thanks for trying the factory processed fake food so we don’t have to. I have a pot of beef and barely slow cooking on the stove/hob and real bread (milk and butter in the dough) baking in the oven. Best to you for 2025!
I have tried the veggie deluxe and the mcplant burger and they are both good. I eat a lot of vegetarian/vegan food and I don't eat meat. Not tried any of the others but a few years ago I tried a vegan sausage roll from Morrisons and it was very nice.
Dear Micky D's please ignore his comments about more salt ;) ... from all of us who are on low sodium diets for medical reasons and find it hard to find any suitable fast food as it is.
That vegan burger from Burger King is lovely tastes just like beef the vegan bacon is lovely too it’s a shame it wasn’t on the menu, the mcplant is okay but nothing great
It seems the whole 'veganuary' thing is very much on the decline sadly. Many of these places are drastically reducing their ranges. More upsetting to see is that many (but not all) supermarkets also scaling back vegan offerings.
I don't mind Vegan, we have Karamel in Wood Green (North London, part of the old Barratts sweets factory) that is fabulous for vegan food and drinks... plus the live music!! Brilliant place, and I am NOT a vegan by any means, (meat is my middle name) but I will eat their food quite happily.
No vegan, but veggie, so I often eat them. The maccies one always upset me and is usually lukewarm, weatherspoons do a very similar one. They used to do an amazing spicy veggie wrap (which you could make vegan with vegan mayo) but they changed it to those horrid veggie sticks. BK always been best veggie burger, sad they changed it. Subway are awful full stop. Domino's vegan pizza really nice.
It's been the same for me. Started with the tier list videos just before Christmas. Have to turn the volume right up to hear him and then race to turn it down before next video from a different creator plays or I get deafened. Pretty frustrating

Some do, some don't. I do but I am aware of that thought process. The way I view it is that it's increasing demand for more and better quality vegan options.
We live in an unvegan world...I have to shop in the supermarket that sells animal products, restaurants that sell non vegan food, literally anywhere ...how's that different from me supporting the vegan options elsewhere?
@@els7397 It isn't, hugely, I suppose, however there is the scale to consider. It's a bit like the coffee shop chains, some of which I perceive as being slightly more or less evil than others.... I guess if nobody want to buy meat, the likes of McD would go all-out vegan.
I loved the taste of meat, I just don’t want any animals to die to feed me, so eat meat substitutes. For most it’s not that we didn’t like meat, it’s where it comes from, hope that helps 💕
No one ever said meat wasn’t delicious, I just don’t want a bunch of animals raised for slaughter so I can eat a cheeseburger x Not to mention the animal industry is notoriously bad for the planet and there won’t be any burgers at all on a dead one.
I have an open mind when it comes to vegan alternatives but I have to say some things I tried are passable but most are just bland and often have an unpleasant texture. Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll is OK, but that seems to me to be because they've upped the spices to make it taste better. It's not a great texture though. Spicy Bean Burger from Burger King back in the day was very good but I tried a recent alterative from a supermarket and ended up being very disappointed, not a patch on the Burger King ones of old. Every single vegan cheese I have tried has been downright bloody awful, plasticky and unpleasant. However I did like Tesco's Vegan Cumberland Sausages and have bought them a couple of times but will still always pick a proper pork version from a decent butcher to be honest. Every vegan alternative to bacon has been nasty and I dislike the texture of Tofu intently. Still I'll keep trying alternatives now and again but it seems the market for vegan alternatives is shrinking and some companies are going bust as a result.
In Australia I’d have a hard time going vegan or even just vegetarian fast food. Virtually non existent Even in the shops for pre-made stuff is very scarce. We’d have to cook from scratch
Not quite! Woolies does a decent range of plant based frozen meat products like chicken tenders and even Greek lamb strips! I eat a lot of beans, lentils and tofu too which cook very similarly to meat in a pasta dish or stir fry. And much cheaper 😊 I’ve been veto for years and I actually don’t make anything totally from scratch
I’m vegetarian for 5 years now, I love mcdonalds mcplant and subways plant patty in a wrap and all meat substitutes at Burger King (they still have plant based whopper by me) I tried the kfc one once, it came swimming in mayo, inedible, got a refund 😂 Wendy’s have a plant based patty burger

I only eat meat free products just for sake of the protein in them as I don’t get iron or things from red meats or other goodness from white meats and I take vitamins as have deficiency’s I just can’t eat real meat I literally cannot sallow it my throughly close up I think it’s trauma from when I choked on meat when younger as didn’t eat meat since that happened then I tried once and my thought just shut I couldn’t swallow it so I think mines is more mentally that’s I can’t eat real meats the fear of chocking again
I think vegans get sick of pathetic offerings.... Mainly chips chips chips and chips. . I used to dine with a vegan and we would go out for food. I would get two fried fish and mushy peas and they always got two portions of chips and mushy peas. If it was a pasta dish it was always the same one every where.
@shonabeswick nothing ultra processed is good for you but meat replacements are awful. The mcplant patty for example has 20 ingredients vs the regular beef patty's 1 ingredient, beef.
I'm not a vegan but a vegetarian and some of the stuff on offer is just terrible. I had a Gregg's veggie sausage roll on the 2nd of Jan '25 around 10am...I was very sick three hours later. TGFS have a very tasty veggie sausage roll and as for The Maccy D's veggie burger...if you put some normal cheese on it it's actually not that bad...but on their menu there is no option to do that so you have to bring your own!

Been vegan myself over 13 years and ik glad for thisnvid but not thst I'd force my belief on others as I respect wjat others eat

I have an open mind when it comes to vegan alternatives but I have to say some things I tried are passable but most are just bland and often have an unpleasant texture. Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll is OK, but that seems to me to be because they've upped the spices to make it taste better. It's not a great texture though. Spicy Bean Burger from Burger King back in the day was very good but I tried a recent alterative from a supermarket and ended up being very disappointed, not a patch on the Burger King ones of old. Every single vegan cheese I have tried has been downright bloody awful, plasticky and unpleasant. However I did like Tesco's Vegan Cumberland Sausages and have bought them a couple of times but will still always pick a proper pork version from a decent butcher to be honest. Every vegan alternative to bacon has been nasty and I dislike the texture of Tofu intently. Still I'll keep trying alternatives now and again but it seems the market for vegan alternatives is shrinking and some companies are going bust as a result.

Not quite! Woolies does a decent range of plant based frozen meat products like chicken tenders and even Greek lamb strips! I eat a lot of beans, lentils and tofu too which cook very similarly to meat in a pasta dish or stir fry. And much cheaper 😊 I’ve been veto for years and I actually don’t make anything totally from scratch

I’m vegetarian for 5 years now, I love mcdonalds mcplant and subways plant patty in a wrap and all meat substitutes at Burger King (they still have plant based whopper by me)
I tried the kfc one once, it came swimming in mayo, inedible, got a refund 😂

I’m actually glad subway stopped with the meatball marinara it was so gross and tasted like nothing, the plant patty is so good at subway if you get it toasted!
As for greggs everything they do is good other then the sausage roll which is disgusting 🤢 the BEST thing Greg’s do is the vegan sausage, bean and cheese x

I only eat meat free products just for sake of the protein in them as I don’t get iron or things from red meats or other goodness from white meats and I take vitamins as have deficiency’s I just can’t eat real meat I literally cannot sallow it my throughly close up I think it’s trauma from when I choked on meat when younger as didn’t eat meat since that happened then I tried once and my thought just shut I couldn’t swallow it so I think mines is more mentally that’s I can’t eat real meats the fear of chocking again

I think vegans get sick of pathetic offerings.... Mainly chips chips chips and chips. . I used to dine with a vegan and we would go out for food. I would get two fried fish and mushy peas and they always got two portions of chips and mushy peas. If it was a pasta dish it was always the same one every where.

@shonabeswick nothing ultra processed is good for you but meat replacements are awful. The mcplant patty for example has 20 ingredients vs the regular beef patty's 1 ingredient, beef.

I'm not a vegan but a vegetarian and some of the stuff on offer is just terrible. I had a Gregg's veggie sausage roll on the 2nd of Jan '25 around 10am...I was very sick three hours later. TGFS have a very tasty veggie sausage roll and as for The Maccy D's veggie burger...if you put some normal cheese on it it's actually not that bad...but on their menu there is no option to do that so you have to bring your own!
