I'm a flyer rather than a cruiser myself but I know several who prefer their time to be spent on BOB's ( Big Old Boats) and, surprisingly, the age demographic is consistently shrinking. I have a friend who lives in the same city as I do who took the same voyage in reverse this year and she's about 15 years younger than me. I'm 47 and it's uncouth to either ask or reveal a ladies age. In her own video she did make comment on the dress code imposition compared to other lines but also accepted it's merits on an experience basis.
Actually Jon and Meagan were the youngest at a spritely 20 yrs of age. And they were the TRUE unsung Heroes of this voyage; such good sports they were. 🤌🏻
I was on the same trip seated near you in the Queens Grille and saw how much you were enjoying the QM2. Your video is terrific and captures the beauty and unique experience of the last ocean liner in service. Thanks for sharing your experience. Your maitre d was Mr. Osmond who has been with Cunard for 25 years and makes the amazing pasta table side. It’s a special treat to get it!
I knew Linus was going to be doing some youtube sponsorships, but I was't expecting those to be on such a variety of types of channels. On the other hand, good to see them doing some of those sponsorships with fellow Canadians!
I’ve literally looked at 50 bags in the last year. I like the pockets but this one is clearly not made for anywhere it rains a lot. Where to put the wet umbrella? Also, just one water bottle holder. Need two, one for thermos one for water.
I think a key factor to how fun and romantic a ship can be overall deals with the other passengers. The fact that everyone dressed up and actively participated seems to have made that trip extra special. I've always been an avid passenger liner lover, and even spent my first honeymoon night on the Queen Mary herself (as the floating hotel). I'm so glad you shared this because I've always been attracted to the idea of sailing aboard Queen Mary 2, but was always immediately intimidated by the massive, confusing selections available.
On a trip like this, I think it's one of those rare times that I'd prefer an inside cabin, looking down at the atrium. At sea, there's literally NOTHING to see other than water all the time. At least on the inside you could get the feeling of being on a hotel balcony looking down at the city streets (something I like to do when I travel).
I'll take sea views every single time. I love looking out into the vastness of the ocean. Just like staring into space. Such a peaceful feeling for me.
I'm a deckhand on a ship that works in Halifax Harbour. The Queen Mary 2 calls at Halifax around once a year in the summer and it's always a treat to see her close up. Truly a beautiful ship.
I haven't been aboard her but I've been aboard QM1 and she was elegant. I grew up in southern California so it was an hour and a half to Long Beach where she is moored. I was born near there and when I think of my family's time in that area, I think of the beach and that ship. I would live to traverse the Atlantic on the QM2.
I watch a lot of cruise videos, but only a handful make me want to instantly book a ticket - this was definitely one of those. What an impressive ship! The amenities and entertainment are right up my alley, as I'm not necessarily into upper deck waterparks and huge nightclubs. The regal and classic feel of the ship is just so breathtaking. This is now a bucket list trip.
I'm so chuffed that you go to do this!! It looked SO COOL! I find most cruise ships highly suspicious, but OCEANLINERS (with or without my friend Mike Brady) are a different situation entirely. And it's great to see that it's not just me being weird, but a legit difference. (Also OMG I can't believe you just got to see John Cleese, holy crap.)
I’m so glad the queen mary 2 still exists and still mostly kicks ass. And yet the rest of the industry (including Cunard’s new ship unfortunately), is just like “nah we want to do more Vegas at sea garbage”
@25:57 - I am generally not super impressed when you mention entertainment on ships, but to see John Cleese in an intimate setting would have blown my mind.
I think it’s interesting about maintaining the ship. The QM2 was designed for the six day crossing not seven, because of this time extension the ships turbines do not need to be used unless to make up time which is rare since her diesels can just barely push her over 23 knots. Because of the down time of the turbines her diesels are prone to break down because they are doing all the work. I find it weird they’d extend the journey and disproportionately wear out her diesels and not split the load with the turbines. On my six day trip we got to 26 knots. It was exciting going that fast.
That is an interesting comment. Do you have any information you could share to confirm that? As far as I am aware, any propulsion failures were due to the Rolls Royce Mermaid pods, that had design flaws and were much less reliable than ABB Azipods. This had nothing to do with power generation, but with the ships drives themselves. Whether using the diesel generators, the turbine generators or any combination of the two, any abnormal failures I am aware of were with the drives, not the generators. For those that are not aware, this (and many other ships) use engines to generate electrical power that is then used to run electric motors to move the ship, run the HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, etc. In other words, the propellers are run by electric motors.
As a kid there was a book at our library, Queen Mary 2 : Birth of a Legend. It was a beautiful huge hardcover coffee table book and I checked it out every chance I got. Loved pouring over the pages and soaking up every detail of this ship. I loved it, and eventually got it as a Christmas present. It sparked a love for this ship, still the most beautiful on the seas today.
I think cruises have changed a lot, but old-school cruise-y people LOVE getting dressed up. That closet would be their dream. Take all their most ostentatious, impractical best clothes. No need to worry about getting in and out of taxi, you can wear your most outlandish outfit and stroll through the boat on a mini catwalk, down to dinner. And then get changed into another outfit for evening entertainment.
Wow, this really makes me want to take a transatlantic voyage on the QM2. I also love the fact most people seem to adhere to the classy dress code, that just makes it feel more period correct!
Wonderful. Personally I think the best aspect of this trip is just to be alone on deck, on the open ocean like all the ocean liners before her did. Pure nostalgia.
Beautiful as always. A comprehensive view that actually takes a look into the ship and it's history as well as smaller amenities that actually matter in a cruse. Unlike most channels which just talk about the bar and the bed.
There are many excellent channels that go through the ship in detail, and provide excellent comparisons to other lines because they’ve been on so many. This channel does a good job of covering the history of the ship usually, but has had a mixed history when it comes to accurate comparisons and sweeping over generalizations about some. I still enjoy it and the excellent quality, but just cautioning the strengths and weaknesses.
I have been anxiously waiting for this video since you started teasing it. Absolutely love your channels Jake, thank you from all of the ocean liner lovers!
Also, that Simpsons writer really gets around. He was on my in-law’s Regent Seven Seas Australasia cruise recently. Nice way to see the world at a every low cost.
I know these videos take A TON of money and effort to create and I just wanted you to know that I respect the quality and consistency of your uploads here. 🎉
Probably by far the best travel review channel I’ve seen. It’s rare I drop everything just to watch your videos. Love a good cruise review and yours do not miss!
A suite on the QM2...wow, talk about the lap of luxury! I've toured the QM in Long Beach a couple of times and could only imagine what the Atlantic crossing would be like. Thanks for taking us along!
Well, I asked for a QM2 video in the comments of the last vid, but I didn’t expect it to be the next thing you worked on, lol. Fantastic video as always, Jake!
Okay, finally an experience at sea that I’m intrigued by. I like that they’re keeping the QM2 classy. Sure it’s nice to be comfy but you can do that at home, a beautiful ship like that deserves a little extra effort.
You finally have shown the price in GBP, so THANK YOU! I would say far more of your viewers hail from 'England' than Australia, so this helps a lot. $13,000 CAD sounds a lot, but it's actually only £7,000 which is almost half. The other more important question though is, where on this planet does someone find £7000? I'm struggling to find £2000 and I work every hour god gives me!
Oh wow. Good break on the price. Still, I hope that LTT sponsorship softened some of it!! Thanks for covering this EXACT trip. I've been long wondering what a "modern Titanic" type trip would be like. (sans the sinking part)
Absolutely loved this!! Best and most informative review of the QM2 I have ever seen. By the way, love all your work. You achieve a level of detail and supported criticism only Gary from Tips for Travellers can rival. Thank you!
I was on this crossing and it was absolutely amazing. John Cleese was a standout highlight. My husband made the comment about being from Cleveland during his Q&A.
Perfectly timed video, my brother and I were just talking about taking the Queen Mary 2 over to England with our dad and then flying into Dublin for an Ireland trip. Defentily not cheap, but something I think we will be doing in the next few years. Thanks Jake!
Yayyy. My first and only time on cunard was queen mary 2 During the king coronation cruise to Liverpool, absolutely loved it even though I'm 21 and most people are older on bord I loved it
I remember watching tons of Ocean Liner and Cruise Ship videos back in 2009 and 2010, many of which included Queen Mary 2. I even remember going to see Queen Mary 2 back in 2011 along with Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.
I stayed in the Balmoral Suite in July of 2023. It was lovely. I especially loved opening and closing the curving doors. Too bad it was foggy the ENTIRE time because of the Canadian fires. Boarding the ship was a disaster because the ship came in late, but we were given priority because we were booked in the best suite of the ship. I wish there were more fine dining options. The food at the Queens grille was OK. We ended up eating at the one extra restaurant EVERY night. The food in that restaurant was great, especially the Dover Sole.
I got a fake version of the Lego Titanic for Christmas. As a child I had a Lego "Titanic" that looked nothing like the original. I can't wait to build it as it comes apart in cross sections just like they would show in books I used to read about it.
Me and mine were thinking of doing the journey this spring. We aren’t cruise people but we are ocean liner people. I wanted to experience the journey in reverse my family did when they migrated here on the SS America.
a few years ago i saw breaking benjamin live in London, the singer is terrified of air travel so they'd never done a tour outside of north America before, however they decided to come over to the uk via the QM2 and I'm so glad they did, it's great to have another alternative option for travel
Cruises are especially interesting because every single part of the experience is delivered by the cruise. I do think luxury resorts and theme parks offer a similar experience and thus also make for really good content, but cruises do edge them out when it comes to just how intensive the thought put into their mere existence has to be.
The last true Ocean Liner! Awesome video and review Jake! As someone who's also always been fascinated with ships, this trip is definitely a bucket list item for me. Been on a few cruises in the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, but it's just not the same. I've been aboard the Queen Mary several times and you can definitely see the "callouts" to the original ship in the design/decor.
You should do a Review of Disney Treasure after Reviewing Disney Wish and Compare this Ship with What You Saw on Disney Wish, since Disney Treasure just took sail in the Past Weekend.
a friend of mine has worked on board ar QE2 as a pastry chef and the stories and demands some type of guests has, who always travels in the upper tiers is extensive and sometimes they throw parties inside the cabin and mostly stay at the cabin the whole time. The butler and crew provided probably was "bored" when you traveled!
I've also wanted to travel on the QM2 one day, I've never done a cruise but the nostalgia of Titanic and the classic days of ocean liners absolutely appeals to me. I'm so glad you had such a memorable experience. I understand those single person cabins are surprisingly spacious, although they seem to get booked up incredibly early.
We actually moved across continents thanks to the QM2 and her ability to host our Bernese mountain dog at the time. While we enjoyed the ship for the limited time we could (a lot of hanging out in the kennel), we found the food to be quite bland sometimes and the service in Brittania was really lackluster. We did like the overall aesthetic and lectures but the overall experience definitely wasn’t up to par with Disney or Celebrity (Beyond class) ships. Enjoyed the review and seeing your take on this though!
Was seriously looking forward to this video, did not disappoint. I'm now looking to book a solo room on this for the ultimate first cruise experience (Never even considered one before finding your channel!) Going on this would be a dream, I'd totally play out my titanic fantasy as I'm sure a lot of people would too who are massive ship fans! 😅
Done the transatlantic on QM2 four times (I go back home to Europe on it whenever I can as a basic fare is sometimes cheaper than flying!) - I've done it two times in a basic inside cabin and two on a balcony and it's still the best ship, service, and experience I've had; Cunard is special no matter the 'class' you're in, the QM2 especially - the last ocean liner out there than can do over thirty knots speed flat-out in the worst weather is utterly incredible, and every bit as remarkable as its forebears. As an aside, I'm forty and have found most of the crowd on the transatlantics to range from 30 to mid sixties, so the breadth of that was nice as well.
You can get a 7 day trip for under 1000 if you book it closer to the voyage. I contacted their agents and they told me the prices drop significantly closer to the cruise.
I was on the same crossing (based on the speakers, direction and holiday theme!). I was in a sheltered balcony and had a great time (I plan to be back!). Amazing to see the crossing from a different perspective and from such an amazing suite accommodation! Glad it was as wonderful a trip for you as it was for me!
i've never been on a cruise but I've always thought it would be cool to sail on the QM2 one day before it leaves service, now its absolutely something i want to do.
I'm so glad to see you had a lovely trip! All too often, you are focuing on bashing cruise and hotels for cheap luxury at high prices (rightfuly so) but now you get to just relax.😁
I mean, that suite is strictly for the ultra rich...but it was a cool suite, no doubt. And I like the ship, overall. I wouldn't mind doing a transatlantic trip on this ship...if I were very well off.
I absolutely LOVED my crossing on the Queen Mary 2 - I found the whole experience to feel so monumental! Your stateroom looked absolutely stunning - you've put my little inside cabin to shame, haha!
Thank you Jake! Great videos, as always. I did this Transatlantic cruise 12 times while working on the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1990s. Staying in the QE2 as a hotel in Dubai is on my bucket list!!
As a small child my grandparents took me on a cruise ship, and I was hooked from the start. My dream was always to book the biggest room and have a luxouroous 7 days at sea. Watching you live that dream looked amazing! I'm so happy you got to experience this :)
John cleese. The showrunner of the simpsons. And a lecture about vampires. What an insanely fun line up. Especially if you like long form content like this on youtube. My god, craaazy.
no way does this video drop 7 days before my first ever cruise, which is a transatlantic crossing on QM2!!!!! i was freaking out seeing the thumbnail thinking youre gonna dog on it and the most expensive thing i've ever bought ($2000 CAD for an 8 night crossing) is gonna suck, but this has just gotten me EVEN MORE EXCITED i'm a massive ocean liner fanatic, so the fact its an ocean liner is, in itself, enough to make me giddy but now i'm even more hyped quick question, was the computer room free? i simply cant afford $250 for wifi but i'd love to spend maybe 30 minutes a day in the computer room talking with people back home love your videos, this one was a real treat
This is something my wife and I have talked about for a while now. Given your other content, I can comment relating to it: ever since the Grand Floridian, and Disney in general, cut down on amenities (the band, come ON Disney) we have elected to avoid the mouse for the foreseeable future. This is now on our shortlist.
I would venture a guess that you guys were the youngest in the Queen's Grill by more than a few decades.

Bright Sun Travels being sponsored by LTT is NOT something I was expecting lol. Good for them I guess

“Ocean liner” singular. This is the only ocean liner in the world.

Enjoyed the review and seeing your take on this though!
I am SO happy you loved QM2. More people from our generation need to experience it. I’m afraid it may be the last ocean liner. 😢
It’s impressive how many of these travel videos you’re able to produce- I love all of them. This one seemed super special!
JOHN CLEESE?!? Wow 🙌 That suite would be SOOO fun to have for the voyage.
Wow. Thanks for sharing this with us.
You lived my dream. One day hopefully.
Let's gooo, LTT as a sponsor?! lol Too cool! And JOHN CLEESE?!?!?! WOW!
You can get a 7 day trip for under 1000 if you book it closer to the voyage. I contacted their agents and they told me the prices drop significantly closer to the cruise.
I wonder which suite John Cleese got, if Jake got the highest rated cabin..??
“It wasn’t just a phase, mom!”
Yes! It's here! Time to get some popcorn.
Now when are you cruising on the Disney Treasure? :)
Treasure review coming in Feb!
@@BrightSunTravels Yay, can't wait. I hope it will be as epic and thoroughly as the Wish one. So you're going in January? Have fun!
I truly have an obsession with these types of videos thanks to you jake 😊👍
I was on the same crossing (based on the speakers, direction and holiday theme!). I was in a sheltered balcony and had a great time (I plan to be back!). Amazing to see the crossing from a different perspective and from such an amazing suite accommodation!
Glad it was as wonderful a trip for you as it was for me!
i've never been on a cruise but I've always thought it would be cool to sail on the QM2 one day before it leaves service, now its absolutely something i want to do.
@6:26 - "Jerry!? Was it a pick or a scratch??"
"IT WAS A SCRATCH!! I swear."
I keed! I keed!
Friends did the now impossible dream trip of QM2 eastbound and return on Concorde.
How many people watching this know they will never be able to afford this kind of luxury let alone ever be on a vacation?
I'm so glad to see you had a lovely trip! All too often, you are focuing on bashing cruise and hotels for cheap luxury at high prices (rightfuly so) but now you get to just relax.😁
44 minutes of banger!!! Tysm for this you’ve made my holiday❤❤
God I've been looking forward to this
@35:31 - "To put it in perspective..." We bought 2 late-model Lexus cars for less than you paid for the room.
I have been so ready for this one.
been wanting to do this exact trip for the exact same reasons. This video sent me over the edge of the decision!
Whooooaaaaaaa that's so cool! Omg I'm so jealous! Happy New Year!
John cleese. The showrunner of the simpsons. And a lecture about vampires. What an insanely fun line up. Especially if you like long form content like this on youtube. My god, craaazy.
15,000!!!!!!!!! Omg someone call 911. My Camry isn't even worth that. lol
Queens also gets caviar service. One of the biggest difference between Princess and Queens.
no way does this video drop 7 days before my first ever cruise, which is a transatlantic crossing on QM2!!!!!
i was freaking out seeing the thumbnail thinking youre gonna dog on it and the most expensive thing i've ever bought ($2000 CAD for an 8 night crossing) is gonna suck, but this has just gotten me EVEN MORE EXCITED
i'm a massive ocean liner fanatic, so the fact its an ocean liner is, in itself, enough to make me giddy but now i'm even more hyped
quick question, was the computer room free? i simply cant afford $250 for wifi but i'd love to spend maybe 30 minutes a day in the computer room talking with people back home
love your videos, this one was a real treat
this beauty visited my old hometown a couple times when I was younger, right when I was in my cruise ship phase when I was younger too
This is something my wife and I have talked about for a while now. Given your other content, I can comment relating to it: ever since the Grand Floridian, and Disney in general, cut down on amenities (the band, come ON Disney) we have elected to avoid the mouse for the foreseeable future. This is now on our shortlist.
It's been 84 years... finally
Damn Linus was not lying when he said he was expanding advertising outside of the tech sphere of youtube.
