    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +1

      I agree, I think they like being cozy & snug!! Another commenter pointed out that moisture collects on the bottom corners and they are attracted to the moisture, so that may be a factor as well! But the avocado shell worm ball fits the cozy thesis better!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

    This is definitely a simple way of harvesting. I had to smile when you said you hope agitating the bin will make the worms not happy with you.
    We all want our worms to be happy with us but when it comes to harvesting we don't. That way they will shy away from us and make the harvesting so much easier.

      All though the whole process takes about an hour It’s really only 4 minutes of agitation time. I go off and do other things for the 15 mins in between each agitation. I have a couple of videos of me counting my tiny worm bin with lots of time lapses…over 1 hour to pick out 600 worms!! It is exhausting counting & it takes forever but at least I get to see each one and know how many I have!! 😂 I love your comments as much as I love your videos!!! It's interesting when you get a worm tower and start the first tray, it is about 150-180 days before you harvest it without a cocoon nursery. Harvesting that first tray is the only tray that takes "forever" because after that the pump is primed and every 2 months you are harvesting castings (because more trays constantly go on every 2 months) It's like a hose...the only time you ever wonder how long water takes to go through a hose is when it is brand new and you first turn the faucet on. After that you don't care how long it takes to get from the beginning to the end of the hose as long as water is flowing😂 So my first tray took 162 days (no cocoon nursery) 2nd tray 189 days (no cocoon nursery) 3rd tray 172 + a 65 day cocoon nursery. 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th very similar. So you are correct!! Start to finish about 240 days but without my spread sheet I'd never know that because it gives me about 10 pounds of castings every 2 months!!!
      Garden flex!!! I love it!! Now I'm gonna make sure I flex even more for you💪🥕🍓
      What would we do with out our wives to keep us in check??!? It's like they are married to toddlers playing in dirt!! About that editing...I just got new software and switched from iMovie to FinalCutPro so I got a little crazy playing with the splices🤣😂✂️I'll get better!! I hope you both have a great weekend!! @Vermicompost Learn by Doing mind =blown 🤯🥳🤯!! Yes, more flexing, give the people what the need/want!! We love the hose analogy as well, which makes sense.
      Just like when I was in sales, keep "putting people in the pipe," eventually the sales drip out lol
      It sounds like cool software, and I think that's key (if you weight as important) to make the evolution of your channel. You have everything in the right proportions, enthusiasm, knowledge, and relateability (not sure if that's a word). Crispy edits will just add that "Je ne sais quoi" (not the literal meaning) to your brand 💪💪💪
      And as I've said before, if creators put time and effort into making great content, whatever that is, I feel it's incumbent on me to try to leave an equally awesome comments

    My worms like the corners too. Wondering about the coconut coir they gave with the Vermihut. I used it and it and when I feed I do not notice a mega amount of worms in the feeding zone. Seems like they are all dispersed throughout the try. Somehow the food is gone though. thanks for any insight about the coconut coir.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад

      I used the coco coir that came with it, but then I switched to shredded cardboard with a little bit of shredded paper. I found I was able to distinguish the castings better and all the bedding was now free!! The coco coir can also make it harder to see the food as the food decays and turns dark. If the food is gone you can give them a little more than last feeding. There will always be worms all throughout the trays with a bunch concentrated in the feeding zone only if there are food scraps or food scrap juices left in that area, so it is not uncommon to see the food gone and no worms congregated there. If you feed a piece of melon you will most likely see a worm ball right underneath it by day 2 and nothing left by day4!! Unless you really want to keep using coco coir as bedding I think the better way is to use what you have and use shredded cardboard with a little bit of shredded paper! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and let us know about your bin and experience with the coco coir!!🪱🪱🪱

    My issue has always been getting the dense sticky bit along the bottom edges and corners where the worms like to congregate. I’m able to pull off the top layer of castings but I don’t like digging and possibly harming my worms. We had one of those baby bottle racks that look like plastic grass. I put the bottom tray on its side and use the bottle rack to loosen the sticky layer by pushing the plastic prongs through the holes from the bottom, allowing the sticky worm filled castings to fall into a collection tray.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад +2

      That is a great idea!! My pre-harvest tray is sitting out back to dry out so I can get the last bit of casting stuck in the little holes...I could really use a baby bottle rack right about now!! I know what you mean about trying to get the baby worms out of the corners...luckily when I use this agitation method almost all of them flee down! I'm so glad you found it helpful. The brown stuff is casting the worms leave as they climb up the walls. I'v found in this worm tower with such a tight lid the humidity level is high in the air between the lid and the top tray so some moisture condenses on the sides...and where that happens the worms feel free to roam! My tiny worm bin rarely has any castings on the sides because the humidity is not as high within it due to the huge air holes and loose lid. Hope this helps!! So many worms for a 166 days and so low vermicompost. When people make videos about worms bins they said "you will get tons of vermicompost in some months"

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  11 месяцев назад +2

      You're right! It does take patience when you first start out but once the bin gets going it can produce more castings on a regular interval. My VermiHut produces 10 pounds of castings every 60 days (each tray takes about 180-240 days to go from start to finish, but with 4 trays on, one is done every 60 days). My shoe box size Tiny Worm bin is about 5-8 pounds of castings every 5 months, but my Outdoor Worm Bin is 5 pounds every 10-14 days ruclips.net/video/tI--M5E-oKg/видео.html and my Urban Worm Bag is 15 pounds every 30 days ruclips.net/video/xBLZGu_gZGo/видео.html Compared to my regular compost, I can produce more compost faster, taking up a smaller volume of area in my various bins and I am constantly producing. When using Vermicompost it should only be 20-10% of the volume of soil mixes and only about 10% of seed starting mixes. Worm casting tea can be made with only a couple handfuls of vermicompost so a little goes a long way! The worms will produce huge amounts of vermicompost given infinite space but most of us don't have the size bins it takes to produce literally tons of vermicompost. They can double in number every 45-60 days but they slow down reproduction when they get to the carrying capacity of their bin...so it is all about the size of their container, not the capabilities of the worms! I produce about 350-400 pounds of vermicompost a year! Thanks so much for watching & raising a great point about vermicomposting yields!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thank you for information, yes, space is always bottleneck, but we have what we have. I was think about makes worms "tower" about two years, but have no time or enough motivation, this year only did outdor compost bin. About 20 years I dig holes in earth and put organic in it, most of it vaporize in 30 days, stay only hard parts or eggshels, becouse there are many wild worms in earth. Can I ask you about word "bedding", you say it often when adding cardboard. Does it mean worms sleep at cardboard or they reproduce there? In wild, I seen how they come from earth but only at night and only if earth is wet, they find partners and do things for reproducing.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Yes I used to bury my food scraps in my garden as well. I was very surprised how quickly the worms and other soil creatures ate it! I also run a regular hot compost bin and spread it over my garden before planting each year. The bedding is the brown dead carbon rich stuff like cardboard, paper, straw or other dried dead plants where the nitrogen has escaped from it. The worms require both carbon and nitrogen rich foods so they actually eat the cardboard, just at a slower pace. It also acts as a substrate for the worms to move around in so most folks call it bedding. I hope this helps!

    Worms in the corners and all over the sides of the bin? Oh yeah, I know that. In fact it just happened right before watching the video. Wasn't able to feed them for about ten to eleven days since I got Covid (I know that there's still enough for them to eat though). When I opened the bin they were all over the corners and the sides. Really hope it is just because of the moisture cumulating in the corners and their adventurous personalities and that there's nothing else wrong in the bin (moisture seems to be okay). Put them all in the center of the bin (biiig worm ball), but some of them are going back up and don't even shy the light. Gotta have a close look for the next days to see what's going on with my bin.

      Is this in your wurmkiste bin? (That is such a cool design!!) I wonder if it is because it is a very enclosed system like my VermiHut? If you wanted, you could dry out the sides and lid a little by keeping the lid off for a few hours each day for a few days. I sometimes did that with my VermiHut last summer. The worms definitely kind of use the moisture as a highway to go up the sides and all over the ceiling of my lid. Eventually I got used to it and now I just know they will be on the sides and lid when I lift the lid : ) There probably is nothing wrong with your bin...just the humidity got a little higher than normal in those 10-11 days. It sounds like you are feeling better!! Hope you have a quick recovery!! And thanks so much for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Yep, it is the wurmkiste bin (really gotta get a second bin soon!) Maybe another factor is that it is just too full. I've got to harvest again soon. I'm definitely going to try to agitate the worms this time, looks to be so much easier then. And thanks for the recovery wishes, quarantine is over tomorrow. :)

      @@TheDumplingMan Great news!! That wurmkiste really looks like a great design and would look great in any home! 1 minute of agitation then let them go down for 10-15 minutes, then 1 minute agitation 10-15 minutes to let them go down...repeat each cycle 3-4 times and most if not all will be out of the castings!!

    Where should I buy worms to start a simple worm bin?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад

      If you can find some place local that sells red wigglers (the most common and easiest compost worm) that is probably your cheapest option. Although I have not used them yet there are two sources that I would use to ship worms to me. They both have RUclips channels so you can see how their business works and the quality of their worms. One is The Garden & Worm Lady ruclips.net/user/TheGardenLadyandWorms
      And the other is Northeast Worms ruclips.net/channel/UCi0auEQBBuac_EU-qNA_wQw
      I hope this helps!! Once you get that first batch going they’ll reproduce like crazy over time. I always suggest starting with at least 1000. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

    I was wondering if you have ever tested composting hair with your worms, clean human hair and/or pet hair.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 года назад

      That is a great question...and I have been tempted to give it a try...but my wife has an aversion to hair detached from a human😂 I think if I put human hair in there I might come home to 3 empty worm bins!!! Unfortunately, or I guess fortunately, our little Weiner hound does not shed, but I have some neighbors who I could ask for a tuft of dog fur to give it a try! I'm pretty sure from what I've read, that both hair and dog fur are compostable with worms, I've just never tried it to see how long it takes, or how it affects the rest of the bin as it's breaking down. I think it would take a long time, relative to other bedding & food, to break down, but lets give it a try!! Look for a future video from me with dog fur!! Thanks for the idea!! And thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      I once put some of mine in. Long, blonde hair. It takes the worms what feels ages to process them. Sometimes I still find some of those hairs when I'm fluffing up the castings (does not feel great when I do and they tangle around my fingers :D).

      I had a really bad experience with hair all tangled up around their bodies... really horrible, as their bodies were really locked in. Would definitely advice against adding hair to the bin.

    Your mean to your worms. How would you like to get thrown around like that over and over again?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      Luckily they are treated with much better care in my worm bins than in the wild, where they are hunted constantly, trampled, eaten, starved of food, and flooded by rains to the point they can't exchange oxygen, then dry out on the sidewalks...so it's a little give and take but I agree I could always be gentler!! (But I do like to be tossed around a little!! I was an instructor pilot in the Air Force and we flew all kinds of aerobatics and stalled and spun our planes daily!! It's really fun) Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the reminder to be more careful!!🪱🪱🪱
