I was following the story from start to finish. The trailers looked cool, and I just wanted more epic sci fi stories. The disappointment I felt after finishing this movie was... a lot
James - as much as Rebel Moon lifted from multiple sources, the font they used is, I believe, a distressed version of Arto Condensed Bold. My guess is Rebel Assault most likely used some form of Star Jedi - a custom font created for the Star Wars franchise based off of Helvetica Black. Because Rebel Moon did not have the license to use this altered version of Helvetica Black, the design department cherry picked, or harvested, many of the design tropes from Star Wars, which led to the original working title of Rebel Moon being Black Harvest, which is completely different from Blue Harvest - the working title of Star Wars 1977. (50% of this comment is true. Before anyone goes nuts, I know Blue Harvest is RoTJ. Also I wrote this before James corrected himself to Dark Forces…sorry!)
I don't remember where I heard it, but Rebel Moon being described as "Star Wars if it were an aftershave ad" is pretty accurate. So the whole movie is dedicated to them finding a handful of people to help them fight off an entire army, and then in the final 20 minutes they go speak to the people who can supply them with their own army - I'd have probably started by speaking to those people tbh. If they'd gone there first, they might have even been able to get off the planet before the Space Nazis arrived. Instead, they spend way too long assembling a crew of... I guess people with unique skills? I still don't really know what skills they have. One of them is good with glowy space swords? I guess one can empathise with animals? Apart from the general guy and the one with the army, the others don't seem super useful to have along for fighting off an invading army. It's like it wants to incorporate a cool heist movie aesthetic, but it doesn't understand what makes a cool heist movie, because there's no payoff in the form of seeing the team use their skills in a meaningful way. The pacing also felt off. The part on the farm felt very rushed, like Snyder wasn't interested in spending time establishing the setting. It's like he was in a rush to get to the "cool" parts of Star Wars, while at the same time slowing down all of the fight scenes so they felt boring, and having an underwhelming, visually confusing set piece fight at the end. Also, it felt like the movie was so proud of the "twist" of Charlie Hunnam's character betraying them - you see, it's the roguish Han Solo type who's only in it for the money, but instead of coming to believe in their cause, he sells them out! That was actually a very interesting spin on the original Star Wars movies. That's probably why they already did exactly this in The Last Jedi with Benicio del Toro. It felt a bit less interesting seeing the exact same twist a second time.
A common argument online in support of Rebel Moon is people are saying because there's a longer R rated version coming of the movie that more of a bad thing will equal good and it will all of a sudden not just be a rejected star wars script

It's just the sheer laziness that's really insulting. Like, Lucas famously wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie but couldn't get the rights, so he did his own thing. His thing had lots of influences from elsewhere, but when you watch it, it all hangs together cohesively and you're not taken out of the setting as you recognise all of the influences.
It's okay that you didn't hate it because I did so you get to lay back and enjoy my rage. What a stupid little film. Truly a disgrace to scifi. Should have called it Rebel Buffoon cuz if we wanted yet another shallow Nazi villain we'd watch Star Wars. I mean, they weren't even racist. At least be evil, but they're just like, farm harder! Oh wow, how intimidating. And then of course the leader just gets bopped unceremoniously. Shove off mate. Those men were bodybuilders they aren't gonna just stand there and believe if they work harder it'll be fine. Show us REBELS. Ones who lash out immediately and don't take the Empire's shit. The most positive thing I've heard about Aquaman 2: "Well it's not the worst DC movie this year" which isn't exactly setting the bar high lol (looking at you Flash)😂
The Avatar moment also wholesale rips off Harry Potter riding Buckbeak in The Prisoner of Azkaban, right down to the griffin thing attacking the next person who tries to ride him, of course much more fatal than what happens to Malfoy.
Maso's question about Snyder staging action appears to have been answered/confirmed with the sequel to this film. Because that would require more creativity than Snyder has.

Your new space opera is Saga and it has a giant spider lady who IS a bounty hunter. It would have to be R rated too if they were going to be true to the text. Have Snyder direct a Saga TV series. That would be awesome.
If Snyder goes anywhere near Saga...... please god no. Why TF would you want Snyder to direct Saga??? I want them ("Hollywood" that is) to stop adapting things that I love, because it's almost always a disaster.
Totally agree. I was just saying ZS is fine at directing things not writing them. And if people need an adult space opera it already exists. If Saga only ever stays as a graphic novel that is perfect. We don't need live action versions of every IP. Make movies of totally new things we've never seen.
If you want to see the original crappy space opera based on Seven Samurai, try "Battle Beyond the Stars", a good one for Caravan of Garbage. I think you'll enjoy it (if you're high).
I take it back. You guys don't suck and I will give you a reason. Cause you make amazing content. Australia is much loved by Canada. Though I have heard deers & koalas ARE sworn enemies. 😂😂😂🦌🐨
Honestly I don't think the next avengers movies will be delayed, either they have someone else play Kang, as a variant. Or they have Dr. Doom or the Beyonder(s) show up and wipe out all the Kang's. Then they're the new big bad, seems pretty easy tbh. It's not like they're halfway through filming ot something.
I think permanent damage has been done. I’ve been watching James and mason for so many years, someone at work asked if I’m from Australia because of my “accent” I’m from and live in the states.
Hard agree with James on the visuals, it looked dreadful, some genuinely bad cgi mixed with clumsly editing making it look obvious the actors were reacting to green screen. Weirdly loads of people online are saying "well it's bad but as usual Snyder's visuals are impressive". Did everyone take mushrooms before watching? There were even weird FoV effects that I have to assume were either errors or trying to mask another error
I watched the trailers for Rebel Moon just now and good god does the movie look so insufferable. All the characters are trying to be too cool for school while being in the silliest sets and scenes. I hope Hollywood starts giving these opportunities to some other directors.
Best X-Mans present ever? Finding out that The Lost Vikings really existed, and isn't just a figment of my scrambled memory circuits. Or at least it's not just my own figment anyway.
You have. People keep remaking seven samurai because it's a really good movie. However this movie took the bold choice of taking just the recruitment segment of that movie and stretching it out to be a full movie.

🎄 Merry Christmas Everyone! 🎄
Show them being wiped out. That's terror. That's triumph.
The Foundation does this but better. Go enjoy it, it's a great slow burn
The most positive thing I've heard about Aquaman 2: "Well it's not the worst DC movie this year" which isn't exactly setting the bar high lol (looking at you Flash)😂
Why is Nick Mason even funnier with a headache and a neck crick? Because Nick Mason plays through the pain, baby. He plays through the pain.
I don't know if it's a typo or intentional but "A Child on Fire" is hilarious
And on this day, our podcast was born. Glory be!
The Avatar moment also wholesale rips off Harry Potter riding Buckbeak in The Prisoner of Azkaban, right down to the griffin thing attacking the next person who tries to ride him, of course much more fatal than what happens to Malfoy.
We need more claire does a review Based just on the film title
Maso's question about Snyder staging action appears to have been answered/confirmed with the sequel to this film. Because that would require more creativity than Snyder has.
Merry Christmas boys, just finished work so listening to this while heading home to a nice bottle of rum
Left a Like for The Weekly Planet. Happi Holidays!
When I'm mad in traffic, now I go, "SOMETHIN' RUUUUUDE", a la the Andrew Dice Clay impression from whenever ago that was. And no one knows I do that, and now you guys won't either. Because you famously don't read these, unless they have hate with an 8 in them.
I loved rebel moon. All my favour movies scenes rolled into one.
*Insert joke about Rebel Moon's working title being Blue Harvest*
With the amount of copied ideas in that movie it wouldn't surprise me.
Sweet. Another installment of 'H8', this section is the best reoccurring segment. Hilarious!
the scene when rebel moon obi wan gives rebel moon Luke Skywalker a gun made me chuckle
This is my favorite gift I got for Christmas!
I HATE... how much I love this podcast.
Griffin scenes were straight out of Harry Potter (Prisoner of Azkaban), moreso than Avatar
Hate mail but the hate has an 8 in it is my favorite segment. James and Mason just slightly bring up there politics and people lose their minds 😂
As a huge Zach Snyder fan ive gotta say...
I haven't really enjoyed any of his movies since Man of Steel.
I know folks hate that movie but i really love it.
Everything since BvS has been a huge let down.
I will say that i dont think having his child commit suicide is helping him.
I dont understand why he went back to work so soon afterwards.
I think it would take me a few years to get back to the person i used to be,
if ever at all.
I'm genuinely interested about what you found appealing about Snyders earlier films before Man of Steel?
@@tappajavittu I really like Watchmen, I used to like 300...
But I also use to have a shirtless Jim Morrison poster in my room as a kid, if that means anything.
I could do without Sucker Punch or Owl Fight either..
Hm, I guess I just really liked Watchmen and MoS lol .
The other movies are pretty,
There are cool scenes.
I was severely disappointed after watching both cuts of BvS and I liked his version of Justice League alot better than the theater cut, but it still didn't live up to my expectations .
I'm definitely not a Snyder Hater,
But I'm not the type of fan that's gonna tell you I think a movie is good just because it's a Snyder film either.
@@CordellPotts You seem like one of the most reasonable Snyder fans I've ever met online, I salute you my dude. Thank you for actually answering me and not just giving me some "his movies are so deep you wouldn't understand them even if I tried to explain it to you" type of response that I've gotten from way too many crazy Snyder cultists. lol
Davey Z’s triple play is the greatest idea ever
Zach Snyder is basically just A.I. if A.I. was a filmmaker.
Him and Gunn are indistinguishable for me and I'm not sure if it's a new form of racism or if they're just two edgy middle aged blokes
@@nailinthefashion I think Gunn is more competent in every regard but I hate everything about what both of them make 😅
@@ellaisplotting wow, thank you! I now know exactly how to describe how I feel about them hahaha. That's perfect. It's like generic and edgy done well, which is just not my vibe
James and Maso finally helped someone a trivia and it had nothing to do with their many trivia segments.
I think when you reach a certain level of power and influence you have to switch to a disarming nickname like Bob to quell suspicions
Rebel Moon definitely had some dialogue.
Typical soyboy zack Snyder Hater. Rebel moon didn't just have dialogue. It had dialogue that was written
Now I know if I should watch it or not. Or will when I get to that part. I'm still in bed, most sleep I've had in weeks from quitting Marijuana 🙃 finally done with the sleep withdrawal!! It's the hardest part in quitting.
To the coffee machine, oh and happy holidays to you and yours reader.
And if anyone wants advice on quitting things I came up with plans that work
To the coffee machine batman!
I guarantee that this film will help you to deal with insomnia. I fell asleep five minutes in.
Merry christmas and happy holidays, boys 💙 thank you for effectively summing up just how drab and shockingly lifeless that space movie feels... Well, I suppose I should call it by its actual title. "Watching People Being Recruited: The Movie."
You both remain effortlessly charming and witty as per usual.
H8 Mail makes me lose some faith in humanity.
Really enjoy all your reviews. Spot on most of the time. But in rebel moon, you missed one thing. Those stingray grabbing people harness things. Exactly a rip off from Beetlejuice dining table scene. The chairs grab them. They look identical.
I knew they looked familiar!
Ah, but you're forgetting all the different kind of abdominal muscles we get to see.
5:24 I'd also bet money that when the JM thing happened and really picked up steam they were like "okay so if he's innocent we do X, if he's guilty we do Y" I doubt they waited until a verdict to think about what they would do if he was guilty.
Snyder directing anything is the opposite of awesome. His talentless ass really needs to stop
Totally agree. I was just saying ZS is fine at directing things not writing them. And if people need an adult space opera it already exists. If Saga only ever stays as a graphic novel that is perfect. We don't need live action versions of every IP. Make movies of totally new things we've never seen.
Merry Christmas fellas, here's to many more hooonovers 🎄
Merry Christmas to all !
Hope these two brothers have one heck of a holiday with their family (they have the same mother). Must be nice.
If you want to see the original crappy space opera based on Seven Samurai, try "Battle Beyond the Stars", a good one for Caravan of Garbage. I think you'll enjoy it (if you're high).
If you want to see the actual original crappy space opera version of Seven Samurai, watch Message From Space
I take it back. You guys don't suck and I will give you a reason.
Cause you make amazing content. Australia is much loved by Canada. Though I have heard deers & koalas ARE sworn enemies.
😂😂😂🦌🐨
Suprised to see a video on Christmas, but then I remembered that Christmas isn't until June in the southern hemisphere.
Lol… I span the wheel and said ‘c’mon algorithm gimme something good’ and your boys latest shtick came up.
Top dollar!!
ah a fellow traveller! i did the same
DEFENDERS! (thanks for this, fellas, you made my day)
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays all!
Merry Christmas boys! And little James.
The H8 mail scared me. People be scary don't they be?
H8 mail but the hate has an 8 in it is back!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 it’s a Christmas miracle
I got more riding Buckbeak from Harry Potter than Avatar with the griffin scene
"losers laughing at their own quips" is an absolutely accurate description of this podcast, and it's why we love it lol
Honestly. I've always felt most of snyder's films have a weird unreality to them. They all feel like sin city but without the style
Sofia Boutella is also the lead in climax very powerful actor! This movie sounds like another the mummy tho
Rebel Moon: Who set this kid on fire... Rude!!
Merry Christmas!
Zunt had me rolling
I watched the trailers for Rebel Moon just now and good god does the movie look so insufferable. All the characters are trying to be too cool for school while being in the silliest sets and scenes. I hope Hollywood starts giving these opportunities to some other directors.
Is Rebel Moon really just the 1/3rd of Seven Samurai where the team gets assembled?
Rebel Moon's universe also has Dabo, which is a casino game in Star Trek, to add yet another film IP this is borrowing from.
Best X-Mans present ever?
Finding out that The Lost Vikings really existed, and isn't just a figment of my scrambled memory circuits. Or at least it's not just my own figment anyway.
That game is so fun! But I couldn't clear the very last level, so I never beat it
Just from the premise of Rebel Moon I already feel I've seen it twenty times before but better
You have. People keep remaking seven samurai because it's a really good movie.
However this movie took the bold choice of taking just the recruitment segment of that movie and stretching it out to be a full movie.
Merry christmas James and Maso and fabulous team
James for the upcoming new year I think you should refer to Maso as the co host who has appeared more than I.
I think "that other guy" might be how Ben from Canada occasionally jumps in for 10 seconds every hundred videos or so? (Personally I love when Ben jumps in.)
10 out of 10 title
Lost Vikings is great. Maso is my long lost twin
Was there a reason this comic book movie news is no longer a suppository? Asking for a friend. Merry Christmas miracle boot.
Rebel moon review is all-time peek weekly plsnet
#1 PartyBoy Nick Mason back in da house.
Was chatting about lost vikings the other day myself
Don't forget that Clom is the sister planet to Raxacoricofallapatorius.
Hate mail! Best Christmas ever!
