- The most cyberpunk cities in real life. This is a list of the Cyberpunk cityscapes of the world, that have inpired masterpieces such as Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Cyberpunk 2077, and many others. Some of them are actually Chinese cities, but there are some other countries as well.
Messy and alienating for some, inspiring and full of adventures for others. Cyberpunk cities we all have seen in movies and pop culture are still a thing of the far future. However, there are some real-life cities that are getting really close to said future and some others have even served as an inspiration to what we see on screen. In this video, we will explore the most relevant real-life cities for the genre. Although they will not be presented in a specific order, as we move forward, we will see more cyberpunk aesthetics.

I live in Tokyo...On a rainy night this monster becomes so cyberpunk it's crazy....Like being in a real life Blade runner movie
Seems awesome, reminds me of black ops 3
Tokyo is very classical, quite old, even in its modernity it is very old.
@@takahashinocia8488 train. go. boom.
I used to live in Taipei and I miss it so bad. The street would turn into a river of molten neon in the night rain.
@@santiagocruzcoronado5673 Not sure if this is what you mean, but when I flew into Tokyo from Shanghai, I was surprised that it seemed like it was a technological step backward. When I was a kid in the early 90s, people who had been to Tokyo described it as the future, but here I was in 2008 and the metro ticket touch screens weren't even in color. Then I realized it was still the future -- but it was the future of the 1990s and not of 2008. All that cool, futuristic stuff had been built in the late 80s and it was still around and well-maintained.
The whole CyberPunk aesthetic is more a thing in Asian countries.
I don't see Europe or even North America become these Cyberpunk led lit cities anytime soon.
New York and Chicago maybe
Its cause they lead in technological advancements for the public. America hasn't had apple to start on any developments other than their individual appliances (phones, tablets, imacs, etc). Whilst Samsung boosts in technology and fields (in science and military advancements) in Korea with TVs, billboards and further investments. Western countries tend to take more time on these things, we hardly even have barcodes to pay for our items
@@_.--._._-._--._-.--__.--._._-. Its not about the technology, its about the culture.
A building with led lights attached isn't exactly high tech.
@@Zoza15 I never talked about the neon features of the settings, a huge factor of cyberpunk is it's futuristic technology and advancements, to which Asia has a good lead in technology development.
The looks of Asia are similar to cyberpunk, but what makes these cities connect is how developed their everyday lives are with technology
@@_.--._._-._--._-.--__.--._._-.
Yes, 5g mobile speeds, bigger TV´and other conveniences that are exclusive to Asia perhaps, but that doesn't really mean anything advanced really.
If you can point out the advances that Asian Countries have, then point them out to me, because i have no idea what you´re talking about here with futuristic technology and advancements.
Again my stance is that its cultural differences how Asian countries plan their cities compared to the west because it has its Cyberpunk Aesthetic.
I live in Hong Kong. This is the reason why I like it here. Everything is developing. More futuristic.
Hong kong has changed a lot since 2019 i heard, they say there is no more freedom. It's that true?

If you combine the cityscape aesthetic of the Chinese cities, skylines full of LED signs and video screens, with the streetscape aesthetic of Tokyo, neon and digital signage galore interspersed with old alleys and rundown areas, then you would have the perfect IRL cyberpunk setting
We're almost there, once the more advanced vr comes and people want to abandon reality and humanity than we'd be in cyberpunk

tall buildings = china

Plus, road bridges from China, and gun violence from America. I believe America will not build the "night city" even in 2077. We have remote jobs for the elites, they just build their own estates instead of such complex infrastructure.
I think cyberpunk can never take place in the USA, neither in Europe. It can only be achieved in East and Southeast Asia. China is on the road of technocracy. The aggressive usage of EV and 5G are early signs that China is going to turn into an AI-governed country. In the near future, EVs can be controlled by road authority just like trains. Then the threat of adversarial AIs becomes real. That's the back story of cyberpunk. Humans are going to fight against AIs.
Chongqing is my favorite. That famous street has the perfect blend of traditional and futuristic to make a really nice aesthetic.

Shanghai is very very Cyberpunk even to its food places. Looks incredibly spectacular, and also fits the cyberpunk theme (not just aesthetically but as a lifestyle too LMAO)
Bangkok definitely has a "Johnny Silverhand" vibe going for it. The life style there is just a similar feel.
The aesthetic example for the Seedy underbelly of most cyberpunk fiction comes from the Kowloon Walled City that used to exist in Hong Kong. Estimates of 50,000 people living on a plot of land smaller than a single New York city block. Stacks of buildings and apartments multiple stories high, wires to strung up without regulation, very little police presence, and all sorts of illegal activities, but the whole thing was an atmosphere all its own and the people who lived there said that it was a city of freedom.
Hong Kong and Japan is the entire backdrop of Cyberpunk

To believe that “Cyberpunk” means tall buildings, neon lights, and foggy nights is completely simplistic and obviously wrong.
It has to be with a dystopian society, living in loneliness, isolation, sadness, and societal decay. (And it is not only at night).
The dystopian part is already happenng, bud. Just give it some more time.

Chinese cities are cyberpunk BECAUSE of the communist party. More specifically, due to state capitalism the buildings don’t need to go through an extensive planning process. If the CCP approves it then it’s built and that’s it, this allows for quick and efficient construction. Seeing as Chinese cities today are unrecognizable compared to 30 years ago, I think that’s one “undemocratic” policy that’s actually good.

You missed out on manila and bangkok. Cyberpunk is not just about the aesthetic, its about corruption, grittyness, the large gap between the rich and the poor anf the mundane and repetetive lives of the middle class paired with high crime rates and drug use and illegal activities like escort services. This is very evident in the Philippines. The corruption, the wealth gap, drug use (failed drug war), grittyness, prostitution, heavily armed security guards for banks and malls. Yeah its a mess here.
