- This recording of New York Philharmonic principal trumpeter, Chris Martin, performing Del Staigers' "Carnival of Venice" with High Bridge Brass was recorded live at Montclair State University on November 17, 2019.

So fortunate to be able to say I was there. It was a great day with Masterclasses, and this concert was just fantastic!
Chris Martin, wow . We were in attendance in Chicago when he performed his first concert as principal with Chicago symphony years ago. This is just so utterly coincidental, because our quintet (30 years) is named Bridge Brass, from Lethbridge Alberta Canada, and we have have worked closely with Howard Cable, the arranger, for many years, premiered some of his works, and remained close friends until his death a few years ago. It is just quite amazing that we shared Cable, and almost the same name for this ensemble. And yes they played this impeccably. I think Howard Cable would be pretty pleased.

Fantastic! At 3:05 he played a really high note that wasn't in the music, but even though it was a mistake, it was awesome!! My mistakes on trombone are more of a low/high flounder for a tiny bit. Perhaps I should always overshoot and go from there. Especially when it's been a long day of playing. 😂
I know in the Jb Arbans version there’s a Grace note on the variation. It’s very possible that note is supposed to be there as it still works with the theme.
Phenomenal! This rendition has replaced my previous favorite, which was Al Hirt's version. The combination of Chris Pine's magnificent trumpet virtuosity and the superb skill of the other High Bridge Brass members, particularly Hiram Diaz's soaring euphonium, are truly world class in every way. I am a fan!

Better than I could play it even back when i was working as a musician.
He does have a nice resonant and centered sound.
In my opinion, the phrasing is a little lackluster. He sounds like an orchestra player, not a soloist, where he has a very even sound and relatively understated inflection in phrasing and dynamic range. For a showpiece like this, it ought to sound flashy, the phrasing should be more expressive, and the dynamic range more dramatic.
The other thing that bugs me is the number of cracks and fracks. Only a couple from the soloist but the rest of the quintet had quite a few. There are many live recordings of the German Brass or Canadian Brass groups that are completely flawless, AND more musically engaging. When I saw the Mnozil brass live , they wer running around, doing all sorts of physical comedy and playing their whole show from memory, and there was not a crack or frack to hear -- just a resonant, flawless wall of sound.
This is very nice, but nobody plays this like Allen Vizzutti, and I'm talking about this Del Staigers version, not Carnival of Venus.

There’s the classic Ron Romm recording with the Canadian Brass - he does an incredible job, too
WhalerGA The Del Staigers is an easier arrangement of the Carnival of Venice. I think you especially like the video where Alan Turns the horn upside down and it is very entertaining however if you are comparing Carnival of Venice’s it should be the Arban’s and the two people who play it the best are Gerard Schwartz and Rafael Mendez which is an older recording however in it you hear Rafael playing in a strict classical style unlike most of his recordings. Matter of fact you can take any of Gerard Schwartz’s pieces on his Cornet favorites album and you will not find a better version of that piece. He hits the most beautiful high G on that album I’ve ever heard. His trumpet career took a back seat to his conducting career but when he was playing there was none better or since.

Not playing high F’s every chance you get doesn’t make it weak… there’s very few people who can play with this good of tone quality and phrasing. Sounds like your ears are a bit immature /:
