I literally went ''Stop, you're butchering the flavor!'' and then went to check if anyone else had commented on this or if I'm the odd one out. Kibbeling spices are a thing and if you put salt AND pepper AND lemon juice AND garlic sauce on the fish it'll just kill the flavor. It's also pretty unnecessary as kibbeling spices are savory enough on their own, so you don't need salt or pepper But hey at least I know what I'm going to have for dinner tomorrow :'D
Agreed on the salt and, somewhat, the pepper. But the kibbeling spices or fish spice they tend to throw on it are really horrible. Kibbeling needs nothing but a bit of sauce. (like Lekkerbek which is also very good, if you get real Cod that is)
As a dutch person i had to gringe when i saw you put pepper, salt and lemon juice on the kibbeling😂😂😂 and btw you eat those with your hands and use the saus as a dipping
Drop is da bomb! I love all the many whimsical shapes it comes in. Engels drop is also interesting. The only one I don't like is salty drop. I think you need to be born a Dutchie to appreciate that.
The Fries with mayo and peanut (sateh) sauce is freely translated, "Fries of war". It hints to the dutch mayonaise sauce and the Indonesian sateh sauce. The Indonesian independance war in 1948 when they broke away from dutch colonial rule. We still love indonesian food and is a well traveled location by dutch tourists. If you ask any dutch person, they all have their own favourite sauce on their fries.
Whoa the guy making the poffertjes is a MASTER! They look so tasty. Loved the look of all the food- especially the crispy codfish and the stroopwafels 😍😍😍😍 Great edit guys!! Cheers, Sheena
Onzin, ik doe altijd peper en een beetje citroensap op mijn kibbeling. Nonsense, I always use pepper and a little lemon on my kibbeling. And I own a restaurant in Amsterdam.
If you don't know the custom and they put it on the table, people will use it because you assume the restaurant knows what they are doing. Personally I always taste first, Id also use my fingers but that maybe considered rude.
eveny119 idk about Dutch culture that much but the knife and fork is definitely a british thing. Holding pickled fish in your hand, opening your wide gob, feeding this long thing into your mouth, would be unheard of in Britain haha.
Belgium guy here, if it was sweet mayonaise, it isnt belgium mayonaise. The ducth make a sweet variant of it called "frietsaus", we belgium dont use the sweet version
The Netherlands also has so many varieties of milk products, yogurts, puddings, etc. I love "vla" - a liquid-ish (pours) vanilla or chocolate pudding that mixes with yogurt (and sometimes with muesli). Also, licorice candy is popular. The bread there is also so good (I'm not Dutch but have traveled there)
So... This music with the accordion is not Dutch but sounds more Irish. Food culture Amsterdam? :) Our country sure has more to offer than only in Amsterdam, the city is so crowded with tourists 24/7 that you actually don't get a real and good view. Even us Dutchies feel like tourists in Amsterdam....Our fries we eat with mayonnaise/ frietsaus which is more sweet than Belgian mayonnaise. The main combinations we eat are just with frietsaus, or 'oorlog' which is frietsaus with peanut sauce and raw onions, the other version is 'speciaal' which is frietsaus with curry and raw onions. The main main main snack you have not shown us is the Dutch 'kroket', you actually missed out on the most important snack our country has, next to the 'frikandel' :p
Miss C, the music in the beginning has a distinctive "Scandinavian" sound, but, here's the weird bit, it's actually Dutch as the traditional music from the Northern part of the country is essentially not that different from traditional Scandinavian (Spelman) music. Too, in the olden days, Scandinavian musicians (Spelmanna) travelled along with the cattle drovers down from Denmark and East Frisia, many stayed for the harvest, paid by means to spent the winter in barns with meals provided and in return they worked in the harvest, made music and did all sorts of work that needed doing during the cold and dark winter months. They would usually help out during lamming and then head back up north to return in the late summer, early autumn. This way of life ended only just before the first world war, back then there weren't really any restrictions as to traveling (except Germany, of course) and people could work where they could find it. A very hard life for sure, so I'm pretty certain the music was a well deserved and much beloved break from the daily drag.
Good comment! Good to know for foreigners about the fries: we (the Dutch) call it "patat" or "friet". The main difference is that north of the main rivers we say "patat", south of the main rivers we say "friet". Also, mayonaise is the traditional sauce.
Omg I live in the Netherlands and hearing you pronounce all the food is so funny. No offense, it happens a lot. I really liked seeing you eat dutch food. I'm originally taiwanese but on my passport it says Dutch since I'm adopted. Love your channel, love seeing all the different kinds of street food and now I want to visit all of the countries you've visited❤
Heh, I was laughing so hard at the pronunciation of stroopwafels. I'm 2nd generation Dutch-Canadian and unfortunately my mother never taught me to speak Dutch, but I know all the pronunciations for the food, because of course! Also, Luke, if you go back make sure you have some saucijzenbroodje (sausage rolls)! It was my husbands favorite snack when we were over visiting family =)
I honestly love the comments of these videos, bc most are ppl who hail from the country being visited and give so much cool insight about their food culture that I'd never otherwise know---especially the CORRECT ways poor Luke should've eaten foods...like the Kibbeling he evidently ruined. lolol
Luke, the haring (herring) you are eating is not pickled. You can buy pickled (=marinated) herring in pots in supermarkets. In Germany it is called Bismarck herring. What you're having is indeed herring, preserved in salt. Even though it does not taste that salty.
been to Amsterdam several times. All the street food is great! Fabe was smoked eel. Actually found mail order source in US. Good, but you need the street atmosphere to make it complete. Lekker!!!
The herring is NOT pickled. It is raw salted herring. Pickled herring is also available but it is called rolmops. Tastes very different than raw. They eat it on the tail in The Hague. In Amsterdam it is more often cut into chunks and served with a toothpick. This Canuk's Dutch pronounciation is not too hot, but congrats on being adventurous and trying the herring. One thing missing that most foreigners are crazy about is croquets (tubular) or bitterballen (same content but ball shaped) served with Dutch coarse ground mustard.
It is marinated in the herings own gut acid and brine it was a way of preserving the fish in times when there still was no ice available !! Yes it sounds strange i know. I am Dutch and indeed it is the most known streedfood.nice video ;) !! Next time visit Groningen and go for the clubs at friday or saturday, one of the best city to party and Socialize!! :)
My memories are all coming back to me and my mouth is watering. Many years ago in the 70's i spent alot of time in the Netherlands. We ate alot of what they called frite met which was french fries with their mayonaisse which is very different from ours it was yellow and i was obsessed. But my favourite was croquettes with mustard, boy did i miss them when i came back to Canada. My parents were from there and it warms my heart seeing anything to do with the Netherlands.
Oh wow the Netherlands is so beautiful! Always wanted to go to Sweden and to Amsterdam, I have a friend that lives in the Netherlands and she Lao swears that those baby pancakes are addictive and to die for. All that food and the breads and pastries look fabulous. Great video as always, thank you very much.
i'm pretty sure that if you're a non dutchie amsterdam will be amazing, but i disliked it very much, it's way to crowded and most people are so rude. :/
FitAngie if you come here (Netherlands) and you wanna buy poffertjes (mini pancakes) buy them if there is a market going on ,same as the stroopwafels (they are the best in farmers villages not that thin as in this vid)
@Bennie Leip... a Goudse stroopwafel is supposed to be thin, you can get thicker ones but those aren't traditional Goudse. Having said that Rudi's stroopwafels (where he bought his) are considered among the best freshly made stroopwafels in the country and are made according to an old recipe.
My brother lived in Amsterdam for about 3 years! And we were over there at least once a month for a weekend. The street food is very good. I actually didn’t like the herring but my brother loves it. Sweden loves the pickled herring too. They do some lovely pastries/cakes, quite similar to doughnuts. Can’t remember the name but very yummy. Am loving your travels by the way 😀
Carole Pearson you probably mean oliebollen... on markets and fairs they are usually sold from a huge stand (truck) called the “hollandse gebakkraam”. They are selling olliebollen, appelbeignets and all kinds of waffles😃 Hmmm mjammie
Does anyone know the name,of the big open water ( Kaanaal / canal ) that runs along streets of : Rooseveltlaan & Attleeplantsoen in Utrecht ( South Utrecht ) ? My Oma ( Grandmother in Dutch ) used to live on,Spaaklaan ,when I would visit her with my family back in the 70s & 80s . My family & myself would jog along that big open water ( Kaanaal / canal ) every day . Would jog by those living on the water ( house boats ) along both sides of the water . Am planning on visiting my Oma's old neighborhood . Would like to jog there again along the water in both her late memory as well as my late daughter's memory . Had promised my now late daughter ,that we both would travel to Europe by her 21 st B-- Day . Unfortunately ,her life had been denied to her ( car crash -- 01--01--17 ) when she had just turned into a young adult woman Would like to uphold to my promise to her by still making such a trip -- even though solo now . So ,would appreciate it if anyone would be willing to respond to my question by letting me know the name of that big water way ( Kaanaal / canal ) . Thank You
Hey man, great videos. It didn't seem like you enjoyed the herring too much haha! Anyway, the trick is to always ask them to slice up the herring into quarters (that's why they give you 4 pickles), then simply put some onions on it, and pickle on top and eat it in one bite, it is a lot more delicious. I was just there a few months ago, great place!
For some miraculous reason this video popped up on my home page here.. oh yes, Albert Cuypstraat market is a great place to taste all sorts of varieties of foods and snacks. Happy that you enjoyed the stroopwafels, little suggestion for pronunciation: it's like "strope" and the second bit the "a" sound should be like how it's used in a word like "bayou" . I was very surprised about the kibbeling and the use of pepper and lemon! Never saw that done in all my 66 years of being Dutch. But kibbeling is deliciousss!!! Proud of you that you weren't scared of trying the herring! It's not really raw, it's brined. Best way to really taste this omega-3 bomb fish is without onion & pickles, but with it, is just a custom with a history that can be googled. Poffertjes: oh lord, delicious! And I can guarantee even more delight if you get a portion and have some liquor added as topping, like either Amaretto, or Grand Marnier or Cointreau!!! That is heaven! whoop x2 to me... The "fries".. now here's a nice thing to know: if you cut my country in two parts down the middle north and south, in the north we speak of "patat" and in the south it is called "friet" . Somewhere down the line I got the hunch that you are from Canada when I heard you pronounce "out".. and yep, confirmed in the end. So proud of my Dutch self haha. Be well
The peanut sauce is like you rightly said exactly like you would have in Malaysia as it stems from its neighbour country Indonesia which was a Dutch colony
I love my heritage n always wanted 2 visit Holland I used w have dutch shoes love 2 c the tulips n the windmills ur culture n country looks beautiful n interesting
Ohhh! This place us so.nice ..! , The poffertjes , the stroopwafels, de pannekoeken, de haring and the patat, are all so familiar to me. My children live there, so I,ve been there often. My country Surinam was a colony from Holland, but became independent in 1975. Thsnks for sharing..love
WHAT??? Salt/peper and lemon juice on the kiddeling ????? If you have a good kibbeling than it is allredy seasoned. Never do this again. And the Haring is salted with not pickeld!!!!
You also have 'patatje oorlog' (war-fries) mostly thats fries with mayonnaise, peanut sauce and small cut raw unions. Sometimes there is curry sauce also on it.
Hello Luke, you're a marvelous guy, fantastic videos, but about this video, please don't use scottisch music. We're in the Netherlands, not in the High or the Low Lands of Scotland. Best regards. I keep following you!
Thank you for mentioning the Belgian fries! I've watched a lot of Amsterdam reviews and they all told it were dutch fries. My Belgian heart was broken when I heard that!
Nooo those are Dutch fries! And Dutch mayo. Dutch fries are fried in vegetable oil, Belgians in animal fat, plus Dutch mayo is sweet, Belgian is sour! But loved the vid! :)
God that herring with onions, and sweet pickles just made my mouth water, I would love to try the fried cod as well yummy!!!! I'm in Spain at the moment, so Amsterdam is not far at all!!!
@NorthernLights oh it's not far at all, it's closer than the UK, yep the Netherlands is definitely a place I would go visit...oh by the way, I actually was born in Madrid...lol
I live in the Netherlands and I think you tasted the right things. But we have got so much fries food: 'frikandel', 'kroket', 'bamischijf', etc. If you're in the Netherlands again. I would definetly try those. You can buy them normally but it's typical dutch to buy them in a wall with glass boxes where you can take those foods out.

Luke Martin hello from indonesia
Is everything you eat good-tasting? It seems that way.
Awesome Video really liked scenery and foods you had. Thank you keep up great work
Me as a dutch girl cried when you put the salt and peper on the kibbeling :o i never seen that before....
lol. Ik zat ook met verbazing te kijken... hahaha
And the lemon juice. Never done that.
Bente Kiss exactly! Mostly the kibbeling is already seasoned enough, like a bag of chips....and the lemon juice...not very common...
I literally went ''Stop, you're butchering the flavor!'' and then went to check if anyone else had commented on this or if I'm the odd one out. love your european series, luke!
Thank you Shiela! It was a short series but I really enjoyed the food in Europe!
Mouth watering....miss our Dutch street food...
NOOO why would you *ever* push out the stroop in the waffle, dude that is gonna stick baaad...
Very nice
The fries are also very nice with some mayonaise and sambal sauce (the sambal is a little spicy and that combo is amazing)!
Very nice episode of Dutch Street Food. I love Kibbeling very much, without souce it's taste nicer imo. Great work as always, mate!
Am loving your travels by the way 😀
Thanks Carole! Amsterdam is an awesome place to visit:)
Carole Pearson you probably mean oliebollen... on markets and fairs they are usually sold from a huge stand (truck) called the “hollandse gebakkraam”. They are selling olliebollen, appelbeignets and all kinds of waffles😃 Hmmm mjammie
I like fries with only mayonnaise and I love the herring with onion.
Lemon juice on a kibbeling?! Dafuq are you doing 😂
Is gewoon lekker
lemon juice and fish goes hand in hand, Its just a personel thing.
lijkt me best lekker
Unfortunately ,her life had been denied to her ( car crash -- 01--01--17 ) when she had just turned into a young adult woman
Would like to uphold to my promise to her by still making such a trip -- even though solo now .
So ,would appreciate it if anyone would be willing to respond to my question by letting me know the name of that big water way ( Kaanaal / canal ) .
Thank You
Sorry for your loss. Oudegracht is the name your looking for.

Hope you have wonderful memories floating back to your.
Being dutch makes watching these so much mire fun.
TAR TAR
I couldn't get past the TAR TAR haha
I bet he also says Po ta toe and, to ma toe
Damn Canadians and their TAR TAR sauce
As well as saying oot instead of out. Lol
Knoflook goffedomme
Poffertjes are the tiny Dutch pancakes in Amsterdam from the Netherlands.
My favorite combination for chips is currysauce, fritessaus and chopped onions.
Be well
Fries, mayo & curry with raw snall fresh onions! Friet Speciaal! ;-)
The peanut sauce is like you rightly said exactly like you would have in Malaysia as it stems from its neighbour country Indonesia which was a Dutch colony
In my region of France we eat herring too, but marinated in cream with lots of onions and apples slices, that's a GREAT combination
oh man, that sounds delicious!
It is! Lots of good food and beverages (mostly alcoholic) in Alsace !
Congrats for your videos, you two are doing a amazing job :)
Here in Cologne we add slices of pickles to the apples and onions in the sauce. In addition freshly cooked jacket potatoes - a dream.
Loved your video. We're going to Amsterdam next year and will definitely savour in your recommendations. Thank you!
I live in the netherlands and poffertjes are amazing
Proud To Be Dutch.
Love it, welcome to the Netherlands
Thank you :)
Depending on the place you are, the "poffertjes" can be ordered with rum as well.....my personal favorite !!
Bert Schalk as I don’t live in the Netherlands anymore I crave poffertjes
This is so funny to watch as a dutchie, but you haven’t seen half of our classics.
Stumbled upon your Amsterdam food tour. Amazing content and editing!! subbed:)
It looks so yummy i want some great video i love it amazing work Luke 👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
Thank you Ritsu! :)
Hello
I love my heritage n always wanted 2 visit Holland I used w have dutch shoes love 2 c the tulips n the windmills ur culture n country looks beautiful n interesting
You forgot to try the Frikandel Speciaal
You missed the Hema rookworst!!! You have to go back and try it, among some other things like bitterbal, hutspot, erwtensoep and oliebollen!
Yes!!!!
As a Dutch resident I recommend you Friet speciaal, it are fries served with mayonaise, curry and small sliced onions on top!
Oh that sounds delicious! Thanks for the recommendation
You also have 'patatje oorlog' (war-fries) mostly thats fries with mayonnaise, peanut sauce and small cut raw unions. Sometimes there is curry sauce also on it.
Patat speciaal is definitely my favourite!
The herring back 100 years or so was salted but it was thought to be unsafe at some point and these days it's pickled
It isn't raw and never was.
It's cured in a wooden ton.
Before we could eat it fresh cured from the ton.
After 1984 only defrost..
@@gerritnhatrang3715 I didn't say it was raw... salt cures meat/fish
i've been waiting for this video
Yes! Dutch food is AWESOME!
🇳🇱🇹🇷squad lan
Beautiful country, amazing what they have been able to achieve during the centuries
Hello Luke, you're a marvelous guy, fantastic videos, but about this video, please don't use scottisch music. We're in the Netherlands, not in the High or the Low Lands of Scotland. Best regards. I keep following you!
Wow the Netherlands is so beautiful 😍...my poster parent is there in Amsterdam..
You gotta KILL the music dude- It isn't even Dutch music!
Thank you for mentioning the Belgian fries! I've watched a lot of Amsterdam reviews and they all told it were dutch fries. My Belgian heart was broken when I heard that!
Nooo dip the kibbeling😂🤦♀️
Nooo those are Dutch fries! And Dutch mayo. Dutch fries are fried in vegetable oil, Belgians in animal fat, plus Dutch mayo is sweet, Belgian is sour! But loved the vid! :)
Best sauces for frites (patat): mayonaise
Mayonaise and peanutsauce
Mayonaise, curry and union
It looks delicious. Fantastic recipe. yummy
I love food. I'm starving now!
I love food too :) Thanks for watching!
What you do lan lemon juice salt and pepper are you high
I live in the Netherlands and I think you tasted the right things. But we have got so much fries food: 'frikandel', 'kroket', 'bamischijf', etc. If you're in the Netherlands again. I would definetly try those. You can buy them normally but it's typical dutch to buy them in a wall with glass boxes where you can take those foods out.
Have a great time luke
Thanks Sanjay!
Excellent video Luke and thank you. Liked and subscribed.
I'm Dutch Indonesian and that is not the right background music for this video. It sounds more like Irish music.
Finaly someone who knows where fries come from! Peace from Belgium!
