I'm 53 now, both my parents lived through (the rebuilding of our country after) WWII and I grew up in a Netherlands which had a (later; subdued) hatred for Germans. Currently, my favourite is pea soup, or erwtensoep as we call it. We're just heading into autumn with the weather getting colder and lots of rain and there are few things better than eating a hot bowl of savoury soup with pieces of rookworst in it - and other meats for deluxe culinary versions. A good erwtensoep has to be so thick that a spoon can stand up in it.
Sounds similar to the peasoup we have in Sweden, ours is yellow peasoup and usually has some pork belly in it as well for extra flavor and even more protein. I've never made it from scratch at home but do buy ready-made peasoup from time to time, such a simple dish but oh so good! Funnily enough, similar name as well, it's Ärtsoppa in Swedish Ärt being shorter version of Ärtor which is peas. It's so funny how similar Swedish and Dutch is at times (my boyfriend aka soulmate is Dutch, and I'm Swedish)
@@ReyOfLight You should really try to make it from scratch someday. So worth it with fresh ingredients. Tip : Don't eat it right after you made it. Eat it the next day, it's WAY more flavorful then.

Nice video, well done. Can I please elaborate on 'Stamppot" every vegetable with mashed potato can be considered stamppot even with raw veggies like "stamppot raw andives. But theres one exception to that and that is "hutspot". Originates from Leiden its cooked carrots with equal ammount of onions mixed with mashed potatoes. It goes back to 1574 when the Spanish troops pulled out of the city of Leiden. Stamped refering to mashing and Huts referring to hutselen, roughly translated to hustle ^^ So if you hustle grated and cooked carrots and onions with mashed potatoes hey presto, and voila, we got "Hutspot";-) This is pronounced like the Swedish pronounce "wifi-hot-spot" I kid you not.
Favorite Dutch dish.... A good stampot (zuurkool, andijvie, prei, boerenkool) or hutspot with agood rookworst or gehaktbal in the winter months. But I also like a good broodje hamburger or just some mini spring rolls (mini loempia) or the big loempia (with some ketjap manis). My favorite candy is drop (licorice)
My favorites are Satékroket, Bitterballen and fries with Joppiesaus, as we don't have those items in Belgium (Wallonia), though we also have a lot of deep-fried stuff here.
I love you guys, and yeah, so great you try our foods! Whenever you visit Den Bosch, try the sweet bossche bol, and may you end up in Amersfoort, check one of the three VanGogh fries snackbars there, real potato-fries, the best imho, in autumn they have really wild kroketten :)
I agree with VanGogh in Amersfoort having great fries. If they're in Amersfoort during summer time, they should also try ice cream from San Marco. Not per se "typically Dutch" but the best ice cream I've personally had (outside of Italy itself)

Bitterkoekjes! An absolute must try. A cheewy cookie made from grinded almondpits you eat with coffee or tea. Or you can make delicious desserts out of it. Pour some liquor (of choise) over them and then some Dutch "vla" or yoghurt, make layers with some canned fruit of your choise. A bit like an English trifle. The bitterkoekjes make the trifle so much more delicious!
Sometimes when i wanted my Kapsalon to be less heavy, there are places that give you the options to replace the fries with rice, and i liked it with shoarma, amazing.
stamp-pot is usually just one veggie with stamped (as in the stampede way) potato's (maybe the one with onions and carrots should be counted as 2 veggies). I never seen a few veggies together in a stamppot like that :)
Don't know if you guys tried this already, but i'd defenately try a 'Puddingbroodje'. They can be bought in most stores in Bakery (Bakkerij) section, but also at a professional Bakery. Not a warm dish, but a nice broodje i'd say. Oh, also a 'Pizzabroodje' can be found in the bakery (section) aswell.
Try ' hete bliksem ' with klapstuk and gravy...it is a stew that is absolutely smashing and for some reason is not eaten a lot anymore. Raw andive potatoe stew with cubes of baked bacon and meatball/gravy is one of my favourites as well. Also absolutely Dutch is Snert...I don't like it but it is also an Icon in Dutch Cuisine.
My favorite Dutch dish ish... andijviestamp met uitgebakken spekjes, kuiltje met jus. We moved to Curaçao from the Netherlands and we can make this dish for you when you stay at our apartment in Bisento Hill. Deana you are a lookalike with my 21 yo daughter.
Liked herring as a kid (rolmops, pickled from a jar), as an adult I'm finding the look of a silvery herring absolutely disgusting :p I would recommend tourists to try Indonesian food, especially meals with daging smoor (stewed beef) and ayam tao tjo (chicken in black bean sauce). I have American Facebook friends who were over here and tried Indonesian and then stopped trying out other foods because they liked the Indonesian food so much!
My suggestions: You should try a Saucijenbroodje from a HEMA or La Place or a good bakery if they have those. Minced meat in puff pastry. Bossche bol when you are in Den Bosch (in a sense a big profiterole). Vlaai when in the province of Limburg (sweet pies with various fillings) Gevulde koek (best from a bakery. Flat soft cookie with minced almonds in a sort speculaas spiced dough) And I saw your video with Indonesian snacks such as klepon and Kue Mankok: those should NOT have been frozen. Makes them extremely tough and IMHO inedible. You need both as fresh as possible; when in Amsterdam go to Toko Makassar. Get them there and eat them the same day. Also extremely good there: risolles and aardappel kroket. Sweet, savory and crunchy. (I’m limiting myself with suggestion from Makkassar, I was practically a neighbor growing up AND have Indonesian roots, so I’m biased 😁)
And try Brabantse worstenbroodjes. For example, directly from the oven of the bakery brabantse-worstenbroodjesdotnl at the back of Den Bosch station. Zuurvlees from Limburg. Broodje rookworst from Hema
Hello Deana and Phil This is a nice video to watch I’m from the Netherlands🇳🇱 What I like most is stampot with andijvie with spekjes🥓, braadworst and jus. Also Indonesian food and kroket/bitterbal.
Actually THE best selection you could have! Other specialty dishes would be Erwtensoep/Snert in the winter and if you're in the south...go for the Vlaai (not pudding but actual pies). Kersenvlaai (cherry), Kruimelvlaai (crumbs and vanilla) and Perzikvlaai (peach) are probably the best go-to pies but any fruit flavoured "vlaai" in the south should be top tier. Sandwich wise, look out for "Broodje Gezond". (cheese, ham, tomato, egg, lettuce base...but every shop has their own little variant)
You know, you could do like a 12 Provinciën Tour trying the specialities of every province in The Netherlands. Like Noord Brabant: get Bosche Bollen in Den Bosch, this province is awesome! While in Drenthe, help yourself to some delicious Drentse Turfjes (chocolate!!) or 'Kontjes' (peach cake with the top icing shaped like a cute bum), try brown beans! The Brown Beans (broene bonen) feature in the classic tale (book and TV series) of Bartje, a boy growing up in a working class family in the first half of the last century by author Anne de Vries.
Next time you go for Nieuwe Haring, eat one by just grabbing it by the tail, hold it over your mouth and take a big bite! If you like fermented fat salt water fish, this is the way to go!

Hey guys im back with watching u guys😘
Deana you are a lookalike with my 21 yo daughter.
you should try the bossenbol, it is a big doughie ball with cream inside of it and a dark choclate outer layer.
5:36 My friend, you have stamppot and hutspot combined.
You should still check out the originel "kapsalon" at El Aviva rotterdam.......................they are still the best
Dutch food is not deep fried everything, it’s like 90-95 % deep fried.
Yeah absolutely we cook stuff as well,... And then put it in the fryer.
Lmao
LOL!!!
Its true, but we fry what we shouldn't and don't fry the stuff we should.
Funny but not true tho.
My suggestions:
You should try a Saucijenbroodje from a HEMA or La Place or a good bakery if they have those. Minced meat in puff pastry.
Bossche bol when you are in Den Bosch (in a sense a big profiterole).
Vlaai when in the province of Limburg (sweet pies with various fillings)
Gevulde koek (best from a bakery. Flat soft cookie with minced almonds in a sort speculaas spiced dough)
And I saw your video with Indonesian snacks such as klepon and Kue Mankok: those should NOT have been frozen.
And don't forget the tompouce!! from a good pastry chef like Holtkamp❤
Hello Deana and Phil
This is a nice video to watch
I’m from the Netherlands🇳🇱
What I like most is stampot with andijvie with spekjes🥓, braadworst and jus.
Also Indonesian food and kroket/bitterbal.
I would expect bitterbal would be popular in many areas of the USA but had not seen it so will keep my eyes open.
Poffertjes......keep them "standard" with the powdered sugar and butter. Then add........dark rum !!! Delicious 😜😜
I was in netherlands yesterday with my family ^^i hope you enjoy it ^^
30 years in Amsterdam and still cant break my self to say I like something, thanks good you have here good international cousins around

If you like fermented fat salt water fish, this is the way to go!
or just eat it the "Amsterdam way" by having it cut into small pieces... but yeah, I agree 100%, eat it without the bread.
as someone with dutch haritage i want to go to the neitherlands so bad, all my grandparents are from there and my grandpa lived just out side of rotterdamn
Looks soooo good!
Dear Deana and Phil,
Great video. Thank you very much!
You should visit the most beautiful Dutch city, also my birthplace, Maastricht and try a piece of "Limburgse vlaai". I prefer the one with cherries. The second best is the one with rice, cream and chocolate flakes. Mmmmmm
Please go to Kamphuizen in Gouda. They make stroopwafels but at a different way. I like it more than normal stroopwafels.
Or you go to Groningen you must try the Eggball we call it a Eierbal. 😋😋😋
Or try in Drenthe brown beans with bacon (bruine bonen met spek)
Heey you need to try rookworst from the hema we call it hema rookworst 😅 thats for me number 1!!! And in the past we had also in holland ham/kaassoufle that whas also super nice!!!🤤🤤🤤 maybe you still can buy it in some snackbars ore supermarket but i don't know because i life now for vieuw years in germany 😢
@@IgorEngelen1974klassiek gehakt. Vaak een combinatie van
Rund en varkensvlees
Rookworst is the best!! ❤ bitterballen too! Yum yum
As a dutchie i will say that i love the food here
Pozdrawiam
Stamppot weather is almost here. (favorite being hutspot)
But to be honest I can't wait for Snert (
Of bruine bonen soep. Das ook heerlijk
try, frikandel speciaal, patatje stoofvlees.
Broodje kip corn met uitjes is a tasty little on the move snack. If you`re a bit hungrier I would recommend loempia met pindasauce. Pick your snack bars carefully, there are good ones and shit ones. Basically, if it smells like old burnt cooking oil, give it a miss.
Mss Maastricht bezoeken? zuurvlees, tete de veau, Rommedoe, Mosselen, Vlaai... lots of good beer en wine..1 uur van Dusseldorf!!!
Ik ben al onderweg 😛
And don't forget the tompouce!! from a good pastry chef like Holtkamp❤
Top 5 at Febo xD
Cheers for the kibbeling love, very fond of the UK's fish and chips, but our way is a lot more like popcorn chicken (of the sea) nibbles... best enjoyed whilst smelling a body of salty water and fighting seagulls (best option is to distract those with 'friet').
Fun fact: haring is also one of the most healthy foods you can eat.
Oh and kibbeling and fries is how you do fish and chips, Englanders.
Also, how did you forget vla? :)
In moderation, they are very salty
They did try vla before. It's Phill's favourite!
untill they discoverd the sea is laden with heavy metals and toxines, o well. its handy when you eat your seafood in the dark. It glows slightly.
I prefer my herring without onions (and without bread), just held by the tail.
Next time you're in a Dutch supermarket get some kletskoppen from the cooky department, don't know if you've tried them yet, might be Deana's new favorite.
Oh dat is lang geleden! Die gaan op mn boodschappenlijst 😋
Great video
Dit is de eerste keer dat ik op een vrijdag thuis zit en Dit aan het kijken ben normaal ga ik uit maar niet met Dit weer 🌧😂
Well done! Goed gedaan!
You should try Vlaai from limburg!
Surinamese dutch food next?
0:39 thats what she said.
The Kibbeling sauce really is very tasty.
IJzerkoekjes from Vlaardingen. Bit pricey, sadly. But 🤤 delicious.
Stroopwafel -- the "stroop" part rhymes with "soap," not "goop." In Dutch, double "o" is a long "o" sound.
@5:19 How many meatballs can you make from 1 grandmother?
You guys are killing me 😂 I want to eat it all
RIP Nataniël Gomes
little correction, Stamppot and Andijviestamp are 2 different dishes, Stamppot is Carrot+Union+potato, Andijviestamp = potato+Andijvie+baconbits
Het zijn allemaal stamppot gerechten.
Wortel, ui, aardappel=hutspot=een stamppot.
Andijvie (eventueel rauw), aardappel=andijvie stamppot.
Boerenkool, aardappel= stamppot boerenkool.
I'll take the fried battered fish and the meatball gravy mashed with the sausage! Looks Great! ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
I miss the Bami croquettes in the frites stands.
Thanks for trying so much. But can i give suggestion for trying snert?
Another serious tip: broodje balkenbrij! And hurry up because the R is still in the month!
Kibbling and Frites is English Fish and Chips done correctly.
I love frikandel Causeway I live in the netherlands !!!
Hi Deana and phil! Shout out to Mr. Dirk Appelhans from Apello❤❤ Donke
I’d really appreciated The Food Review… Thanks😋🍽😋🍽
