One traditional snack I missed in this video and the previous one, is the Dutch tompouce. Although the majority of the Dutch people like them, everyone has their own way (or struggle 😂) of eating them. The kruidnootjes come in a lot of flavors as well, chocolate is one of the most popular flavors, maybe even more popular as the regular kruitnoten. As for candy, I like all kinds of salty licorice, especially the salmiak licorice types as well as licorice toffee
Hi guys. Maybe next time you could try the grown up food like stamppot, snert, hachee. Or poffertjes, oliebollen around 31 december. Or worstenbroodjes and Bossche Bol in Brabant. Or oud Hollandse snoepmix. Hope you like them.
Tony's Chocolonely is expensive, but the price comes from it being the first to try and make slavery free chocolate in the Netherlands, in which it mostly seems to have succeeded. The tijgernootjes and similar snacks are usually for when we have guests over to have something on the table that everyone can just grab a handful when they feel like snacking. Of course some people just eat these by the bag while binging Netflix as well, but I think most people would prefer potato chips or popcorn for that.
You schould try Dutch dishes like hutspot, stamppot boerenkool. Also try Hema worst, Vla. Thanks for the video. Btw frikadel is usually without the batter crust and served with mayo, curry/tomato sauce and raw onions 🤤
Tony’s Chocolonely is huge here in the US - at least on the west coast in California and Whole Foods because it’s fair trade and anti-slavery chocolate. Plus the mold of the chocolate is really fun and different. I also feel like, while they are a little pricier, that’s because they are supporting humanity plus the chocolate is heavier - I feel like you get more in their bars.
I couldn't have said it better. Yes a bit more pricier than other chocolat sold in supermarkets here, but way worth it. I love the one in the Orange packing, caramel seasalt, soooo good.
Yes. It was started by a journalist after making a documentary on the labor conditions in the cacao industry. I remember that from television. It was quite hard to watch. He spoke to people who had fled from farms where they had been forced to work since they were young children. Actual modern day slavery, with beatings and surrounded by barbed wire. He also spoke to someone high up at Mars who said they tried but it was virtually impossible to import cacao without slavery being involved. So that's why he started Tony's.
@@saskiapanter best one for sure. there is also one in pink ant that is white chocolate with 'framboos en knettersuiker' . and that is like raspberry with popping parts what give the same effect as poprocks :) i also like that one
That's how I like mine.. with hot tea or hot coffee. Very tasty and addictive 🙂. They're sold in Aldi's in my area usually starting in fall and through Christmas.
Stroopwafel for the win. So good. Might have been last year, (or 2020) McDonald's had a Stroopwafel McFlurry as some kind of 'international menu items' promotion. So you're spot on for them being perfect with ice cream.
If you can find a Hema that sells ice cream, they sell sundae's in different flavours, of which one has caramel and stroopwafels on it. That for a fair price!

Stroopwafel is awesome. If you visit there again, try to get some that are freshly made, Deana will go 12/10 for sure! Tonys is available at Edeka, but not sure if in all of Germany. They built seperate distribution networks for the Cocoa to have slave-free chocolate, a really good concept. My favorite is salt/caramel (orange). That just means I pay a lot of money not for the product. Well, I still bought one with the honey. And yes, it tastes like good quality. So maybe the warning signs are wrong this one time ;)
The end was quite good, with you throwing Kruidnoten at each other. Kruidnoten, or their relatives Pepernoten, mixed with some hard candy and gummies together form what is commonly known in the Netherlands as "Strooigoed", which literally means "Throw stuff". It's originally a part of the Sinterklaas traditie where Sinterklaas and his Pieten (our equivalent of Santa and his Elves) come around on december 5th to give children presents and candy. The throw stuff refers to the way the Pieten throw lots of "strooigoed" from big bags as they walk through the town, or when they enter the room. So you instinctively got that right. They're as much meant to be thrown as they are meant to be eaten. Kruidnoten are now so popular though, you can basically get them year round, but you do still see them mostly around Sinterklaas.

Try poffertjes! Dusted with icing sugar they’re absolutely wonderful. Tiny, puffy pancake-like clouds of goodness. And the Dutch New Year’s Eve traditional: oliebollen. Some times they’ll be plain little balls of fried dough. Some times they’ll be the wonderful crunchy-and-moist ones with pieces of apple inside. Other versions will have rum-soaked raisins in them. You need to eat them fresh, still warm, and dusted with icing sugar. Addictive as heck. All kinds are delicious. My favourite are with apple. On cold days you need to try ‘snert’. I worked with a guy in a hospital kitchen. He would suck a spaghetti noodle up his nose, pass it through his nasal passage and pul it out his mouth. Eww. Thanks for the video!
For maximum stroopwafel pleasure, lay it on top of a cup of tea so the caramel becomes warm and soft. For traditional Dutch chocolate: Koetjes repen (cow bar)
Kruidnoten are part of sinterklaas. We celebrate it on 5 or 6 december. Sinterklaas is comming every year from spain with his steamboat, rides on a white horse and got helpers called pieten. Kruidnoten is the main candy. Not just bikes did a great video on sinterklaas
I love eating Tom Poes (it's something you buy at bakeries because the grocery store ones aren't great) and it's a pastry kind we eat when we celebrate something. And I love Oranjekoek, which is something you find at Frysian bakeries. I'm personally not a fan of Tony Chocolony, it upsets my stomach and I prefer Milka chocolate. We do love stroopwafels and eat them a lot.
The stroopwafel is one of those snacks offered for one of the airlines. Definitely shocking the first time I had it because it was so delicious. I then wished I had warm tea for a beverage.
You can buy these at foodmarkets. They make them for you and they are a lot bigger. And warm/hot! Most eat them with coffee or tea. You actually bought the cheaper kind. If you are ever in Gouda, buy them there at the local bakery. Huge difference!
Love your videos! My wife and I miss Germany. We were in Bad Aibling two years ago. Very nice Bavarian town! You two should check it out! Keep up the great work!
Oliebollen cannot be missed in November and December Drop Salmiaklollies Kapsalon (new Dutch food which actually means ‘hair saloon’) Dutch cheese Chocomel or Tony Chocolonely chocolate milk By the way, stroopwafels should best be eaten fresh, hot off the plate. There’s one such place at Zuidplein mall in Rotterdam.
Speculaas in English is spiced biscuits. I really mis the drop because I don’t live in the Netherlands anymore. As a child you get imprinted the food that is normal in the county you grow up in. If not it’s a different story. But I like the way you are exploring different tastes in a respect full way❤
Im a bit late but the 1 one is sweet and sour you guys pick both the sour one but there are more round ones in there to and those are sweet. It’s my fav. Candy and i live in the Netherlands so try the sweet ones to!
If you venture into the Netherlands again try BrokSpeculaas thats one of my favorites, i even put that between a white bun with a little butter the night before place it in the refrigiator to take it to work next day🤤 For candy i like(d) salmiak lolly's its been a long time i had them.
Interesting. Occasionally my mom would put speculaas between 2slices of buttered bread for my lunch at school. By the time lunch rolled around, the cookie would have softened and made for a rather unique sandwich.
The caramel biscuits is called millionaire shortbread in South Africa. Delicious! Stroopwafels we warm up for a few seconds in the toaster and then enjoy with tea or coffee. As a child in the 1960's we used to buy a tin of hard biscuits on which you pored hot milk, the biscuit doubled up in size and were deliciously soft and comforting. I can't unfortunately remember the name but by Dutch Ouma used to buy this at her local shop in Mosselbaai, South Africa. Ouma made speculaas with a special wooden press apparatus her Ouma brought from the Netherlands. I've inherited Ouma's speculaas recipe. Thank you for sharing the informative videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Hi, you have to put the stroopwafels on a cup of coffee and it will warm up.... and it will take on some coffeearoma from the steam. (Put it on like a lid on the cup.) .... promise it will be good!!!
Stroopwafels are a Dutch favourite all year long. Yes, it's caramel in the middle. Very cheap (compared to where I live). Also, the first was a gummy and the second was 'drop' (licorice) so stiifer and chewier than gummies.
Tony's is a pretty expensive brand, and getting a gift box like that adds to the price. Spar in the Netherlands is also pretty expensive, no longer the budget store it was in the distant past. 10 Euro is steep even for them though, supermarket chain I get most of my groceries (and that's not a budget chain) has that same box on their website for 8.59. Speculaas and kruidnootjes are traditional for the St. Nicholas season, which is pretty similar to Christmas in the US :)
yes stroopwafels, drop, salmiak, snoepveters, kruidnoten... next time go for: dubbelvla (double custard, vanilla / strawberry in one package), boterwafel-snoep (butterwaffle-candy), and maybe some taai taai or anything friesian 😅 they love aniseed flavour, they put it in everything, even warm milk 🥛
You two missed one of the most delicious of all, the gevulde koek (filled cookie). But the best thing you can do is buy them at a local bakery, same with the stroopwafels. And there is also a chocolate version of the kruid/pepernoten, those are more delicious in my opinion (especially white)
you are so fun to watch whahaha and the stroopwafels are the one's that are in my opinion the number one of al the candy you have tastet groetjes uit nederland :P
The SPAR in the city center of Eindhoven is crazy expensive and barely classifies as a supermarket anyway. Its more like one of those 'togo' supermarkets you'll find at rail stations. If you'll ever visit the city center of Eindhoven again, there's a large (regular) Albert Heijn right between the shopping area and the train station.
Things not mentioned. Speculaas. Taai taai(with coffee) Zwarte drop and double zwarte drop. Misses. Gestempte mousies (spelling ?) Chocolate letters at Christmas Marzipan Komijnekass So much of what I grew up with and still consume I live in NZ but my mother was Dutch. Most Dutch foods easily available here. All are in my pantry.
Stroopwafels = syrup wafers. On top of something? Yes! But not on ice cream. Traditionallly, you can lay it on top of a warm mug of coffee. The steaming aroma of the coffee will then seep into the wafer, making it more enjoyable. ;-) Spekulaas in Dutch, Spekulatius in German - for me, it's more or less the same thing. The omly difference I know is that Spekulatius is only avaiable around christmas, Spekulaas could be available all year round. The recipes must be quite similar, though.
At a cafe it is not kruidnoten with the coffee that is like a small almond cookie. I get that it looks the same. Kruidnoten taste like speculaas. It gets in stores around Sinterklaas. I prefer the ones with a chocolate layer.😊 or combine the regular kruidnoten with some chocolate ❤
A City Spar is normally more expensive. Redband chances their candy assortment every couple of years. Really Dutch is drop (liquorice), mainly 'Apothekers drop', sweet or salty or munt drop and honingdrop. And of course we also have our famous banana candy (foam) and Tum Tum. For cookies... grandma's have bokkenpootjes, spritsen, kletskoppen and krakelingen.
hi, i just wanted to say that tony chocolonely is always expensive, we usually buy it as a gift for somone. And i also wanted to say that Spar is also really expensive so you could better go to a big supermarket like Jumbo or Albertheijn, there its more cheaper.
For the tony chocolony . Tony is indeed just very expensive . The melk (red) flavor is about 3 euro’s (normal size) . But spar is also just expensive .
btw stroopwafel is better is you get it fresh of the market. if you but it from the supermarket putting it 10 to 20 seconds in to a microswace makes it so much better :p
I’m from Holland the last treat we do eat at this time off year mostly till 5 december it is A Sinterklaas treat. Pieten trow with itt amd gif it to children to eat its A holliday feast That we only have in the Netherlands, Belgium and Some Dutchbat isles. We als have them coverd in chocolate 😊
Kruidnoten are usually eaten during "Sinterklaas". Sinterklaas is a kind of stand-in for Christmas, because they don't celebrate Christmas the way Americans do. That's where Sinterklaas comes in. They also do not celebrate thanksgiving at all. My sources: I am a Dutchy.
10:38 thats true, at least for me, they have a bit of an addicting taste imo, i could eat so many of these (which is off course allowed at your grandparents), unbelievable u guessed that from just one bite 😂
16:14 omg that's a snack you only have to eat when It's like around 5 December, because It's a special snack from a holiday we have ( SInterklaas, but It's not Santa Claus but It's the same concept)
the look-o-look candy was strawberry flavour and dont think i am from the Netherlands now. I am from Belgium and we have Look-o-look here too. Some of the other candy you showed is something you can find here too i think you showed about 4 or 5 kinds of candy that are litterly dutch type candy but with Dutch stores invading belgium too these days you can find them easily here too.
If you're ever in Vlaardingen, you should go to a bakery (Jan Boer is the best one in my opinion) and buy IJzerkoekjes, they are only sold in Vlaardingen. The best time to get them is early in the morning when they are fresh out of the oven. They're not cheap, but really good!!!
Spar is the most expensive supermarket here i feel like also, if u like stroopwafels try them when i lay them on top of your tea for a second so the caramel melts a bit

You both are Tiny im dutch and im 12 and im like 172cm
I worked with a guy in a hospital kitchen. He would suck a spaghetti noodle up his nose, pass it through his nasal passage and pul it out his mouth. Eww. Thanks for the video!
For maximum stroopwafel pleasure, lay it on top of a cup of tea so the caramel becomes warm and soft.
The strings definitely have that playful factor 😂
Potato Phil definitely enjoyed playing with it during the recording 😂
From Tony's chocolony the white popping raspberry is amazing! (It's the pink packaging)
We do love stroopwafels and eat them a lot.
im dutch and im surpirsed how well u guys can pronounce these dutch words epic video, BTW i live in eindhoven to!
I have heard you are to put the stroopwafel over your hot tea cup, the steam heats and softens the cookie.
The stroopwafel is one of those snacks offered for one of the airlines. Definitely shocking the first time I had it because it was so delicious. I then wished I had warm tea for a beverage.
KLM (dutch airline) usually serves them 😉
its so enjoyable to watch non dutch people eat drop for the first time. (btw i love drop)
The stroopwafel You can get them in usa starbucks
My local Target carries the Tony chocoloni's in the variety pack and single bars here in the US. They are 9.99 for the variety pack.
Oliebollen cannot be missed in November and December
Drop
Salmiaklollies
Kapsalon (new Dutch food which actually means ‘hair saloon’)
Dutch cheese
Chocomel or Tony Chocolonely chocolate milk
By the way, stroopwafels should best be eaten fresh, hot off the plate.
So funny, you said definitely can compete with Milka and Rittersport. But Milka most definitely cannot compete with Tony 🤣😂🤣
Kruidnoten are also called pepernoten and we eat it with the holiday Sinterklaas on December 5th
Im dutch im so happy that you two went to the netherlands
If you venture into the Netherlands again try BrokSpeculaas thats one of my favorites, i even put that between a white bun with a little butter the night before place it in the refrigiator to take it to work next day🤤
For candy i like(d) salmiak lolly's its been a long time i had them.
Interesting. Occasionally my mom would put speculaas between 2slices of buttered bread for my lunch at school. By the time lunch rolled around, the cookie would have softened and made for a rather unique sandwich.
Stroopwafela are the best when they are fresh made at the market.
Second best is a hot one. By putting it on top of your tea.
The kruitnoten we’re originally for what we cal Sinterklaas fest. But now are around for the whole year. They can also be used in a beef stew.
Also, the first was a gummy and the second was 'drop' (licorice) so stiifer and chewier than gummies.
stroopwafels are so much better when you buy them fresh at a market or if you warm them up at home before eating them
Tony's is a pretty expensive brand, and getting a gift box like that adds to the price.
You should eat the stroopwafels fresh from the market, so yummie 🥰😍
Me as a Dutch person i find really funny to see you guys try dutch snacks 👍👍👍
From my early childhood in the Netherlands, I remember Zwart op Wit concentrated licorice powder, not for wimps! Came in a straw like Pixie Sticks.
yes stroopwafels, drop, salmiak, snoepveters, kruidnoten... next time go for: dubbelvla (double custard, vanilla / strawberry in one package), boterwafel-snoep (butterwaffle-candy), and maybe some taai taai or anything friesian 😅 they love aniseed flavour, they put it in everything, even warm milk 🥛
Dubbelvla with vanilla and chocolate in it is better 😅
Stroopwafels can be placed on top of Kaffee cup and the Kaffee heats them up and makes them even more lecker!!
You two missed one of the most delicious of all, the gevulde koek (filled cookie). But the best thing you can do is buy them at a local bakery, same with the stroopwafels. And there is also a chocolate version of the kruid/pepernoten, those are more delicious in my opinion (especially white)
The netherlands looks really cool, i would like to visit it some day since im from another country.
you are so fun to watch whahaha and the stroopwafels are the one's that are in my opinion the number one of al the candy you have tastet groetjes uit nederland :P
I want to try the Stroopwafel!
You can buy them easily on Amazon. Even in Japan I got stroopwafels in very rural area.
Tonys Schokolade gibt es seit einigen Jahren auch im deutschen Supermarkt. Die 180 gr. Tafel kostet um 3€. 😁
Things not mentioned.
Speculaas.
Taai taai(with coffee)
Zwarte drop and double zwarte drop.
Misses.
Gestempte mousies (spelling ?)
Chocolate letters at Christmas
Marzipan
Komijnekass
So much of what I grew up with and still consume
I live in NZ but my mother was Dutch.
Most Dutch foods easily available here. All are in my pantry.
Stroopwafels = syrup wafers. On top of something? Yes! But not on ice cream. Traditionallly, you can lay it on top of a warm mug of coffee. The steaming aroma of the coffee will then seep into the wafer, making it more enjoyable. ;-)
Spekulaas in Dutch, Spekulatius in German - for me, it's more or less the same thing.
Also I really enjoyed your video! Its so cool because I come and live in the Netherlands
Stroopwafels are sold in Lidl in my area. Also not seasonal. I am amazed that you hadn't tried them, yet 😅
Also at Penny, Aldi, Rewe. Its normal German cockie
Kruidnoten is pepernoten we have an thing called sinterklaas that's why its for the time of the year
We have a version of all of them in belgium. I loved the strings as a kid and used to braid them before eating.
Iconic would be, Schuimblok, Zoethout, Pindarotsjes, Zuurstok, Bounty, Kletskoppen, Colaflesjes, Smarties, Toffiefee, After eight, Kersen bombon, Gevulde koek, Marsepein, Negerzoen, Trekdrop, Toverbal, Potters, Roomboter babbelaar, Fishermen's friend .... and then some!!
Stroopwafel should be eaten warmed up. Usually we put them on top of a cup of tea or coffee to warm it up before eating it.
hi, i just wanted to say that tony chocolonely is always expensive, we usually buy it as a gift for somone. And i also wanted to say that Spar is also really expensive so you could better go to a big supermarket like Jumbo or Albertheijn, there its more cheaper.
Stroopwafels are sold in the USA often in Aldi and Costco and sometimes I see them in gas stations and even Ross.
For the tony chocolony . Tony is indeed just very expensive . The melk (red) flavor is about 3 euro’s (normal size) . But spar is also just expensive .
I've seen Tony's chocolate here in California. Not sure where, tho. I had the variety with rice crispies in it. Really good!
Stroop waffles are meant to be placed on top of your cup of tea or coffee to warm up the caramel
btw stroopwafel is better is you get it fresh of the market. if you but it from the supermarket putting it 10 to 20 seconds in to a microswace makes it so much better :p
10:44 my grandma always have those cookies, your'e right!
this time of year you'll see pop-up shop selling al types of kruidnoten. Brownie flavour, salted caramel, coco white chocolate covered etc
Stroopwafels are what we eat. We warm it up on a cup of thee or coffee or a microwave
The last little cookies I’d put in some hot coco Or eggnog drink. Or add to a pudding.
we do that with regular spekulatius biscuits. just pour hot homemade vanilla pudding in a one-cup glass container and add the biscuit, push it down.
10:10 funfact those cookies used to be 2 times bigger and They're also available in cinnamon sugar flavour
I like the old dutch candy like: borst honing , stroop soldaten, trekdrop, dropveters, geruite spekkies, zeeuwse roomboter babbelaars, haagse hopjes, etc etc...
Bitte kommt dieses Jahr endlich nach Benrath zum Weihnachtsmarkt. Ist kein Stress für euch und Schloss Benrath, Rhein, Park sind auch dabei
The tigernuts is actually an Indonesian invention, they coated the nuts and we embraced it.
