But Lincoln defeated all his generals by personally ordering the attack on Norfolk naval Base and being there himself on a boat with a telescope. I really like how Johnny Reb was a lot less boisterous and confident at the start of this episode. He’s not even that zealous about his defense for the Confederacy anymore. It gives the impression that Billy Yank’s vicious rant last episode really shook him. It shows how much Johnny Reb actually cares about his friendship with Billy Yank, but he’s clearly torn between his friendship and his love for his Southern heritage.
It's also because this is right after Billy Yank yelled at him at the end of the last episode
So, he's probably in shock still
I was thinking Andrew was making interesting acting choices with Johnny Reb and then the skeletons showed up and it all made sense.
HEADCANON - After casting aside his belief in the Lost Cause narrative, Jonny Reb took on the identity of Billy Yank and travelled back in time to try to convince his past self to abandon it sooner.
Oh I love this
A plot twist worthy of Rod Serling and M. Night Shamaylan.
That would explain why they look identical
Bro cracked the code. I love that 😆
That’s what I was thinking too!
That’s what I thought was going to happen
Because when he was at Billy yank’s grave if he just took off the coat he’d be wearing a similar shirt to what Billy wore in the first episode
And mixed in with the fact that there was already a Time Machine
I thought he was going to go back, then realize he couldn’t use his own voice and feigned a northern accent and sat down for episode one
That’s my head cannon
Dear Andy: I am a white southerner, descendant of a Confederate general, and lifetime believer in the Lost Cause.
This series changed my mind.
Welcome Johnny.
Holy shit, dude that's awesome to hear. Respect to you.
Welcome back to reality. Its not always the nicest place, but its always better than the alternative! Respect for being willing to change your mind!
Good shit man, good shit

I really liked the way he wrapped up Johnny’s Arc. Instead of having him be a staunch and immovably ignorant southerner or uncharacteristically shift his views completely in a shallow way, it was an appeal to basic humanity and recognition of the destructive nature of an institution like slavery.
In the end what it truly took WAS meeting his heroes to break through his self-deception. It really gives him no more excuse to hide behind when Davies tells him "if slavery is wrong, then I don't wanna be right".
Confirms my fan theory that Johnny Reb represents 21st century Lost Causers with 21st century views on race.
@@jeffreygao3956 I think there is a bit of Andrew himself in it. IIRC he mentioned in one of his first videos that he used to at least believe some Lost Cause propaganda.
@@jeffreygao3956 that’s probably accurate seeing as how most lost causers I know are not inherently racist but just fail to do the exact thing they accuse others of doing. Not putting things in the context of the times and thoughts of southerners in that time. Almost my whole family are lost causers and they are not racist. Maybe not as racially sensitive as everyone else these days but not racist. It’s a shame really because there is no shame in admitting that my ancestors supported a nation for whatever reason they had and it ended up being wrong. My ancestors were lied to as to what they were fighting for and I wish I had come to understand that sooner.
It's rich that the reasons for preserving slavery are that the alternative is "subjugation and degradation." Sounds an awful lot like how slavery feels.
Zero-sum ideologies are sus.
Right, but it's not "natural" for white people like it is for black people! /s
Slavery was more than just an economic issue for the people of the South; it was an ideological one. These men (and women) had it drilled into their heads from the time they could speak that to allow slavery to be abolished would not only destroy the racial hierarchy of the South but also destroy them as a people. Never mind the apocalyptic prophecy of servile insurrection.
So yes, evil as it was, these people were more than willing to fight for slavery.
Thankfully, they lost. And our country is better for it.
@@Klishar122 The darkest, most disturbing possibillity of the history of American slavery is: what if slavery really DID create not just white identity, but American identity as distinct from English identity? What if the definition of both was, "The Master Race"? And can anyone prove that we ever came up with a replacement identity in either case?

To him, it's more then mere herritage pride, he genuinely considers that part of history to be central to his beliefs. It honestly makes me incredibly sad. He's a good person, but he and many like him are fundamentally mislead.
More than anything, they would be horrified by the ‘impolite’ racism that is now generally associated with wh*te tr*sh people today. Little do they know they have more in common with them than they do mainstream society.
Something worth pointing out--the Deep South was not just a society with slaves, it was a slave society. There's a difference. Slavery existed in most states at some point, but the 1860 census showed that South Carolina had more slaves than free people! The entire economy and social structure there was based on the plantation economy and racial caste system, which is why they were willing to go to such lengths to try to defend it.
Anyway, a fantastic conclusion to Checkmate Lincolnites! It's been a real pleasure watching this series.
When you frame it that way, it makes perfect sense why they were so viscerally opposed to abolition of slavery. They'd basically built everything around it from the ground up, to a complete total dependence. It would be like suddenly having to completely rebuild and restructure their entire economy and society from the bottom up, now having to exist alongside the very people that had been forced to build it and maintain it entirely for free their entire lives. They expected payback would be brutal, which shows that on some level they knew it was wrong, but because it benefited them so tremendously, they just weren't willing to give it up.
@@thegrimharvest Very much so. The book "American Nations" explains this better than I could, but basically the Deep South has its roots in English slave lords who came here from places like Barbados. When those guys settled on the American mainland, they replicated the brutal slave culture that existed on those Caribbean islands, and the rest is history.
@@thegrimharvest - it's the same underlying psychology as the modern idea of "white genocide" / "great replacement". It's all utter nonsense, borne from the assumption that other people are just as horrible as they are, and that if whatever groups they've subjugated in the past were to gain power, they'd be subjugated themselves in the same way.
God's and generals 2 takes the series in a bold new direction, but proves itself a modern master piece 10/10

"Well if slavery is wrong, *baby I don't wanna be right."* Goes so hard from zombie Jeff Davis
Also Johnny's accent changes from the old Southern gentry thing to a normal modern Southern accent at the end, showing how he went from being a weirdo who bases his identity on Confederate heritage to being a regular guy.

@@tuplat5107 Actually I think he’s just flat out wearing Billy Yank’s uniform from the second episode of the series, his hat and the coat are different colors.
For anybody who doesn't know the early history of New England too well, the Witchfinder hates Providence because Rhode Island was renowned for being the most religiously tolerant colony. They tried to stay neutral during King Philip's War and didn't hang Witches or even Quakers.
Rhode Island is goated 🗿🗿
Not just Quakers, it was also a religious haven for Baptists, Catholics, and Jews. Roger Williams even ended up extending his stance of religious tolerance to the native tribes, where he'd preach to natives, but quickly abandoned attempts to convert them.
Or even
@@CivilWarManbased Roger Williams?
Most states gave funding for one religion or 2 and I think Rhode Island was the only one who said anyone can worship anyway they want on their own experience, and from those Quakers (and Unitarians in my belief) the freedom of religion doctrine was born.
how is this 10x better than the Box Office's "Civil War"
The Lincolnites cinematic universe (LCU) is really something else
At certain points, I had to remind myself that Atun-Shei plays like 4 separate characters in this video, and when the Witchfinder and Klaus fight it's actually Atun-Shei engaged in a life or death struggle with Atun-Shei

Thanks! I loved this series. It makes me sad that it's over. I couldnt tell you how many times I've watched and rewatched this series.
As a Massachusetts native. The Witchfinder General being motivated by the mere prospect of Providence having greater status than Boston brought a tear to my eye.
I loved it.
As a native born Rhode Islander from Providence I was just ecstatic to be mentioned
@@tonyjoestar2632 Yep. Rhode Island gets ignored and made fun of a lot--the Wall Street Journal once called the state "a smudge on the fast lane to Cape Cod". But considering it was founded on a commitment to separation of church and state and a haven for religious dissidents (it was actually founded by one such dissident, Roger Williams, who was kicked out of Plymouth for disagreeing with the Puritans), I'm glad their ideas are what made it into the Constitution.

A small thing I'm a little disappointed you omitted: Mississippi's Declaration of Causes starts with, to paraphrase: "We have to have slaves because growing cotton is so profitable but the sun is too much for our delicate white complexions for us to work the fields :("

It comes down to, "The South lacks the ability to support a large population making large profits for investors... unless the labor force is forced to live in indecent conditions."
The answer to which is, "No society is owed a living."
@@warheadsnation And that Mississippi tradition continues unto the present. Heritage indeed.
Johnny Reb's uniform looked pretty blue in the dim light of the setting sun. Absolute commanding use of color and lightning by my favorite director. Thank you Atun Shei!
When people insist that the Stephens speech was the act of a private citizen, they conveniently forget that at the time that he was the Vice-President select of the interim government of the Confederate States. They also ignore Jefferson Davis' two inaugural speeches and the Constitutions that were built to protect and perpetuate slavery. Slavery was the cause of secession and secession, the cause of war, which the CSA started in Charleston Harbor in 1861.
Did... did we just witness a character arc that lasted longer than the Confederacy?
Yes, yes we did
Surprisingly not that hard to do
I would love to see how he described this to Gettysburg National Park Library before he filmed there:
"May I film a movie inside the library? The Mummy of Jefferson Davis, an 'Army of Darkness' style skeleton army, an Antifa Super soldier, the VVitchfinder General of Massachusetts Bay, and a Nazi armed with a lightsaber are going to fight for the soul of this country."

“Hey Lee: eat shit” is how I’m gonna counter rebel fanboys from now on.
The fact that the final battle is fought over the historical record itself is such a nice touch and a great encapsulation of the series' overall themes. Also, I love how Andrew affectionately pokes fun at the communities he's part of, from historical reenactors to RUclipsrs.

Could you do an episode just looking into the history of Southerners who remained loyal to the union? I feel like their stories are almost never told outside of West Virginia
But there were many Southerners in Appalachia, the Ozarks of Arkansas, the Hill Country of Texas and North Mississippi and Alabama who supported the union. They Would go on to form units of thousands of men for the Union.
Some important individuals stayed loyal as well such as Chief of the Navy David Farragut from Tennessee and Quartermaster General of Union Army Montgomery C. Meigs from Georgia
There are also interesting stories to be told such as Governor Sam Houston refusing to accept Texas leaving the union when he fought so hard to get Texas into the Union. He was forced out and retired to the Texas countryside only die in 1863 believing his life’s work was a failure.
There are also tons of other good stories that haven’t been told much and it’s an aspect of the war that I think could be interesting to explore and important to
