    In this woodworking video I build my best piece yet. A Mid Century Modern Inspired Credenza. It is made from Walnut Hard Wood and Plywood. When I used to build furniture for clients, this was my most requested piece. I thought it was only right that I actually have one for myself.

    Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

    "Form follows function" is the Bauhaus principle. It is that the beauty and attractiveness of something comes from how well it fulfils its purpose, furnitures purpose is to both look good and also be functional. Additionally, expanding on the principle, Bauhaus is about truth to material, ie, don't try and hide the materials you use, eg don't make a table out of plastic and make it look like wood. It's about respecting the material you use. Live the video, great stuff mate 💪

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Trent...thanks for the background/insight. To your first point...I guess without strictly knowing it, that was kind of the point I was making "the purpose of looking good". Interesting side note...I know this piece looks like walnut, but the entire thing was actually made of paper mache :)

    • @oghdfkhgdfkljghdkflj
      @oghdfkhgdfkljghdkflj 6 лет назад

      Additionally, the Bauhaus also taught students to push materials to their breaking points (extreme bends, tessellation, height, weight etc) before ever really making art anything. This is an aspect of minimalism that is often overlooked--it shouldn't just be "simple." And i think the joinery of this project sort of nods to that. There's a big leap of faith the first few times you mitre-fold something without fasteners, and I even thought to myself, is the half-lap alone enough? And of course it is, but that tightrope sort-of joinery is exactly what good design is about.

  • @drmkiwi
    @drmkiwi 7 лет назад +1

    Thanks, nice work. I especially like the care you take in all aspects of the project and what really got my attention on this build was how you minimize / eliminate squeeze out.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      Thanks. it's funny, I had one person tell me I use too much glue, and another that I don't use enough. I said "I must be using the perfect amount". I guess you're the goldilocks to confirm that.

    • @drmkiwi
      @drmkiwi 7 лет назад

      That's funny. I'm just completing a garden bench and went to a fair amount of trouble to minimize squeeze out. My concern then was have I starved the joint of glue? It's a tough one, but it looks like you had a reasonable amount of glue in the joint and left a space between the glue and the edge of the joint, so the squeeze out filled in that area. I think I might have to buy one of those Rockler silicone glue spreaders.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад

      Yeah...the spreaders, and the whole kit are really nice. Especially the tray, or just having something to put glue in, rather than always squeezing it directly onto the piece. Another secret is don't use excessive clamping pressure.

  • @homoinspirus
    @homoinspirus 7 лет назад +5

    One thing I can't wrap my head around is how you calculate the length of top and bottom parts of the trapezoid frame. I mean you could just cut any length for top or bottom, but then how you calculate the length of the other part? I'm hoping to build sth similar so your answer would be hugely appreciated. Oh... and awesome as always.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад +7

      You kind of have it. You basically sneak up on the finished length. So cut your top and side to whatever. Then I lay them on there backs and dry assemble with tape. And then just kind of sneak up on the bottom until it fits just right. You can pull all the info from drawings, and calculations...but I never trust it, b/c if you were off slightly with an angle, or a length (on the top or sides) it all goes out the window.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  7 лет назад +9

      I would say use tools dimensions (no matter how accurate) as a general suggestion. You're human and whatever cut you make that is supposed to be 16" is probably slightly off. And so is that 15* angle you tried to cut. Compound these human errors a few times, and that number becomes a suggestion.

      Pro tip: To find funny measurements without math, draw, play with it until it looks right. And remember, measure measure cut, measure again, cry.
      I personally have autocad for free (it was a student license which for some reason never expired) But anything with a measure function will work, heck, even a big piece of paper will do just fine.

      Thanks Clark. Appreciate that. Others have pointed out that what I was talking about wasn't strictly "form follows function" but I think people still get the sentiment of what I was getting at.

    I enjoyed the video. I suggest you try a Shark Guard blade guard. They are a great upgrade to your standard blade guard. It always makes me nervous to see talented young craftsmen with hands so close to blades. Beautiful work!

    “Furniture can serve all sorts of different purposes but at the end of the day the best pieces should do more than just offer a place to put your things or rest your legs. They should say something about who we are and make us feel something when we look at them. In other words, an object's primary purpose or function doesn’t always have to be about maximizing utility, sometimes it can simply be... looking good.” I love this guy.

      I really think the main one is just make stuff people want to see. I know there is a lot of RUclips algorithm stuff that actually works against me b/c it favors frequency. I can't compete on quantity though, so....

    I have been waiting anxiously for this video for what feels like an eternity! You genuinely did an incredible job and this is my favourite video to date. The instructional about the legs/base was right on point for what I had been hoping for with this video, so thank you! Also, "The Bad Larry" was always my favourite piece of yours, but this one generously takes the cake now. You're a superb craftsman and an artist at its finest. Well done, Chris, and thank you!
