I was torn between getting an R7, R8, or 90D for my next upgrade. I ultimately decided to go with the 90D mainly because the specs are good enough for my needs and there is a far more robust selection of lenses available on the EF platform.
Just because YOUR 18-150 was faulty doesnt mean this is typical, in fact all things i read about the 18-150 were damn happy, and its in fact the only nice, native APS-C lens, anything else needs to be adapted or RF full frame lenses. I wish now i would have bought the 18-150, but i though i could get around with a similar and bigger aperture EF lens (which is in fact bigger and heavier, especially extremely front heavy with the RF EF adapter, the RF-S 18-150 is nice balanced, awesome zoom range and stabilizer, just a little bit too slow) I wish canon would release something like a affordable and small RF-S 15-45 2.8 or similar for wider stuff and somewhat portrait/bokeh capable in normal and slightly tele range.
Thank you for the comparison. There are so many variables though. The 90D footage does not look accurate to really how it shoots. What setting was it on for the shots? Was the sigma lense calibrated via the usb dock? What color/image profile(s) were the videos shot in? Any post production? Even different times of day will produce different light, angles, etc. Would like to know more
The footage on both cameras was shot on different focal lengths so it does not help the viewer decide which camera is doing better. There should not be such a big difference in bokeh between 2 APS-C cameras and R7 appears to have too much bokeh. I've seen footage between eos 250D and R5 and the image quality and bokeh are very close in good light so 90D and r7 should not be so different after all.
I just bought the R7 and 18-150mm kit two days ago and the lens works flawlessly. There's a new firmware update that wasn't on my camera and I installed it. The camera came with fw 1.0.1 and the latest is fw 1.1.0. I installed that before trying the camera/lens, so maybe you need the firmware update?
Hi, I’ve stumbled down the rabbit hole of wanting to replace/upgrade my camera. I currently have a (now discontinued) canon 200d which was perfect for my first ever camera. Mainly used for video and some photography. Now I’m really , really REALLY needing some advice … deciding whether to go for canon 90d, canon mark 5d iv, or canon R7 . The R7 looks attractive to me because of : the autofocus capabilities and the newer technology that come with mirrorless , I’m scared because of not knowing how to use it compared to my traditional camera , I’m embarrassed to say I have only ever used auto on my camera but I’m going to learn how to use manual. Also slightly worried about the ‘overheating’ rumours/problems with mirrorless, but apparently shouldn’t be an issue if I don’t intend to do shoot 30min + .. I’m interested in the canon mark iv because it seemed EVERYONE thinks it’s a beast and amazing but then after research I saw it’s better primarily for photography AND it doesn’t have a flip out screen (a feature I currently have and love) and then obviously the 90d …. I think is a really really good option as it’s a step up (several steps) to what I have and probably the most familiar one I’d be used to .. just scared of thinking the R7 is more superior I think is my problem… would really appreciate your thoughts.
Great video Dominic! Btw, what were the picture profiles and settings (sharpness, contrast, saturation, & color tone) you set to film the major part of this video (the "talking head part")? Did you use the Sigma 18-35m at 35mm? Which light did you use and at what intensity? I´ll apreciate your answer. Greetings from Brazil
Did you shoot the 90D in live view mode? This mode lets you use Dual Pixel autofocus rather than the inferior phase detect. I have the 90D and R7, and if people aren't interested in shooting the 90D in Live view mode (from the back LCD), then the R7 is a clear winner. Using the 90D in Live view, the autofocus results will be more similar between the two. If price is no concern, definitely get the R7. Just IMHO, but this is a nice review.
I love my 90D and I have been hoping Canon would make an RF camera with simular specs and the R7 is that mirrorless version. I said I'd never get rid of my full frame 5D mark III. But I may do a trade in at B&H and apply the amount I get for it to the purchase of an R7 and an EF to RF adapter. I'd still keep my 90D. I enjoy making videos and having two simular cameras for video would be great I think to get multiple angles on a film.
@@Dom_the_Bomb I'm just waiting for B&H to get the Body only kits back in. I really don't want that lens. I have plenty of EF lenses to use with the adapter.
I love my 90D as well. Had it for 2years and after shopping around found a good price on a R7.. I want that for my more professional photos but the 90D for just walking around and everyday cannot be beaten. The battery lasts forever 😂
@willemdebeer2507 To be honest the R7 is lighter and takes even better photos. I mostly use my 90D on a tripod for shooting video and grab the R7 for zoomed in video shots and stills of what ever I'm shooting.
Great video would love to see you do more comparisons like a portrait photoshoot/video session where you can also get the model to move around the frame to compare the autofocus of the 2 cameras.
R7 and 90D share the same sensor. And shooting the flowers at sun hard light with the 90D and the same flowers with no direct sunlight doesn't seams to be a good way to make a comparison. I have a 90D and I will keep using it for a long long time...
These are cameras why is everyone assuming that people want to only learn about the video element of the camera? Not everyone buys these cameras to shoot video.... Where is the still image element to this review. ?
That's funny. Error 60 appeared when I used the 70-200 F2.8 RF for my R7. Amazing camera tho. Very powerful with the 24-70 F2.8, and excited to try more lenses with it.
The 90D is not a god camera. It's extremely unforgiving to the slightest focusing error or exposure error. Errors that would have been forgiven on any other camera. Furthermore if you think that the 90D's high pix density will allow you to crop think again, the results will be unusable. However in 4k videomode the results are satisfactory.... Now let's talk about the R7 the results are fantastic, your pics are allways in focus, no noise problems for tiny amounts of underexposure and you can crop as much as you want. You'll get wonderfull results with most old EF lenses. My advice use the 70D,80D, 7D,7D2, R7 or R10. The R7 is the only Canon crop camera with internal image stabilisation (IBIS) (october 2024).
@@Dom_the_Bomb I wear headphone when watching RUclips. Your audio is louder on the left channel. I know Rode mics have a safety channel option that records a second track at -10dB if you turn on that feature. Check to see if you have that going on. Your left side was fine for me but annoying in my right ear. I have the Rode Videomic Pro+ and if I enable the safety channel, my Left is Normal and Right is -10dB. Since I record indoors mostly I turn that OFF and it just records dual mono. Video was nice, would love if you compare 2 cameras to make a small rig and record both cameras at the same time to see how both work at the same time but other than that I enjoyed the video. Enjoy.
I thought the pictures from the r7 looked like crap. Do you need glasses or do I? Seriously I am happy with the 90 d and thought the pics on it were better. Everyone has their own taste.

Sorry, cannot agree with you. The clips you showed, the 90D outputs looked far better.

I got a warning but twisted the lens and it worked. If it still doesn't work just RMA it and Canon should replace it.
Cool thanks for the tip!
