    Great review as usual. I would add that if you are a big Star Wars fan this is a must buy for solo play. (Especially if you like The Mandalorian)

    I really enjoy this game - I generally play two handed, one character against the other. Very stoked to have the expansion so I can play as Hera Syndulla.

      You prefer playing two handed as opposed to using an AI?

    Why I have not played solo, this is hand down my favorite competitive game. The trading / barring / debt tokens really spices up the Star Wars atmosphere. Also, though it’s long the limited player interaction reduces stress / hardcore competition that other competitive games have.

    I agree with you on almost everything. I have the same feelings for Star Wars. I love the first 3 movies for the same reasons you mentioned, but I'm so burnt out on it now. I watched the 2nd set of movies, ugh, but have not seen the last 3 and I don't have Disney+ so have not seen any of the series. But this game has rekindled my interest in the game's universe. It really is a great game, especially with the expansion. I never finish games, but I have successfully solo'd this game twice and my group of 5 recently completed a full game with the expansion (we cobbled together an extra set of player components). I think a Middle Earth version of this game could be done, with some tweaks, and I would buy it in a heart beat!

      When Star Wars is good, it can be great. And I can still get some of that joy I had with it as a kid. For sure. I would totally not object to a fantasy themed version of this.

    Oh man... I opened the RUclips, I saw the preview of your new video and guess what... Outer Rim in Dungeon Dive. One of my favourite board game of all time. With the expansion off course.

    Great review! I have heard this before, about the expansion is a must. SW fatigue is REAL...however, nice to hear that the game itself won you over, not just fancy pictures! Looks fun

      SW fatigue if you try to digest everything Disney throws at you at its own time, but if you take your time to watch the movies and series on a slower pace you're good!

    I agree with all of your negatives except for the shape of the board. I think it’s both thematic and it envelops you as you play.

    Just a little though here. Is it me or is literally every game you recommend needs to have expansions? And if that's so, is it on us (us niche community of dungeon-crawl enthusiasts) who want too much and can't enjoy just the base game content of something, or is it on the the publisher who sells the game half-baked to make it more expensive? Some games are not even recommended without *that* specific expansion so it made me wonder.

    • @boardsomnis55
      @boardsomnis55 2 года назад

      You are not wrong. I think the days of a "great" base game sold at retail are gone, especially with IP games. If you include a ton of content its cost might prevent it being successful at retail, and potential for a lot of the content not to be game-tested fully. So we get less now, and it takes an expansion to either add more replayability or correct a major flaw in the game system. Glad to see an expansion for SW:OR as it felt like an abandoned title from FFG. I'd be happy to pay a little more at retail these days for a "fuller" base game as my Kickstarter habbits are fading due to the VAT charges and high shipping, not to mention the FOMO to get the expansions at the same time

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 года назад +1

      I love expansions for sure. And the kinds of games I tend to love are those that, IMO, are made better with more variety. One thing I talk about a lot is the illusion of exploration and the illusion of the chance of anything happening. It’s easier to achieve that illusion with more random variables.

    I agree with your summing up of Firefly. I watched the whole thing years ago and my one word review is 'meh'. Not that great

  • @zdelorean

    "...it was simply okay.", sums up my feelings for Firefly and Joss Whedon as well. I do enjoy FFG Adventure games and didn't think I needed this along Fallout and Runebound, that might change.

    Looks really fun ! I'm not a fan of Star Wars, thx for adressing this concern ! I was reluctant to this game because of that thematic and also the FFG marketing patern. But this game seems more like a space exploration and managing events and this is what I like! The theme is not too much Star Wars and not to much Euro style! I'll sure try it! I'm just sad that FFG doesnt put their expansion already in the base box. They always give you 5 base card and if you want more variety you have to take out your wallet!

    We're the same age. And 50 is a long way to go 😂 Now indeed Star Wars is milked out. The first trilogy was amazing. And to be honest Rogue one is also a good movie. The end is insane. I was a 10 year old kid again. Thanks for the review. 😁

    I wish Star Wars: Outer Rim could get reskinned with the Twilight Imperium IP since FFG has both licenses. I’m also totally burned out on Star Wars and that’s kept me away from this game. Nice review!

    Hmmm very fiddly. Had the focus been even more on the narrative And exclusively focussed on the hunters I had gone for it. But just too much peripheral stuff i actually do not care about. A shame but will skip.

    You ignored and ignore now the influence of the novels exploring the smuggler, bounty hunter and outer rim culture that spawned comics, cartoons and spin offs. Their popularity is not down to the original trilogy but to those books and comics and the culture they paint, that popularity resulted in two more trilogies and provided the material for a large number of animated tv series followed by the current wealth of Disney shows.
    You might enjoy the novels of the Original Star Wars Legends stories or The Bounty Hunter Wars.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 года назад +1

      I didn’t ignore it. I mentioned that I haven’t read them. And have no interest to.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 года назад +2

      Also need to remember that none of that stuff was around when Empire came out and the bounty hunters were introduced. We all just immediately loved them because of how cool the toys looked.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 года назад +2

      It's pretty crazy how Disney threw out decades of great stories to pull from. Pure hubris.

    • @j3errym
      @j3errym 2 года назад +1

      @@TheDungeonDive You implied that the characters were popular despite only seconds of. exposure in a few films, my point was it wasn't seconds of exposure but plenty of stories over decades that made them popular.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 года назад

      Yes. Exactly. They were when those came out only popular because of a few seconds of film and the toys. The books didn’t exist then.
