In this new episode of Coaches Stories, I'll be covering the mysterious ousting of Jim Carlen, who was the South Carolina Gamecocks head football coach from 1975-1981. He coached the team to a 45-36-1 record, 3 bowl games, and the school's only Heisman Winner George Rogers.
But Jim Carlen would be fired in 1981, and he never talked about it publicly, nor did the school. However after some research on the South Carolina President in 1970s - 1990s, Jim Holderman, I believe I have a theory on why Carlen might have been pushed out. It has to do secret slush funds, private investigators, a former Egyptian first Lady, and a cheerleader.

USC wound up hiring Joe Morison after Carlen's firing. Morison was a great coach whose life was cut short by congestive heart failure. Had he lived, he had the potential to be one of the best. After Morison's death, USC had some good years with Lou Holtz and terrific years with Steve Spurrier but a lot of meh in between.
After WVU lost both Carlen and Bobby Bowden due to their tight-fisted policies (and firing Frank Cignetti), they worked a little harder to hold on to Don Nehlen. It was close a couple of times, but Nehlen stuck with WVU for 21 seasons, winning 202 games.
Our football program suffered mightily because of those firings. If we could have had many more years with Carlen and Morrison, we could have seen much more success in football. Spurrier helped a lot, but much later.
