  • Hope you all enjoy this quick video on how I install metal landscape edging. The bolt cutters were purchased at Lowe's. They are Kobalts and cost around $26.00 plus tax. The metal landscape edging comes in 8 feet sections and includes the metal stakes to secure the edging around the flower bed. The only other tool that is needed is a hammer.

    Nicely done, we do a lot of metal work including custom flat bar welded in place. When we do use the standard 4” metal - it’s helps to trench if you’re imbedding in the ground more than 2”, if not, it will flex and be a pain to work with.
    With the standard edging, we try to hide any weird connections in a less obvious place around the beds; I probably would have ran a continuous line along the drive way/walk first and hid the last connection on the apposite side.
    Tree circles - if you’re looking to use this edging for trees circles, you can connect two pieces, set in place, cut off the excess(need to cut off one pocket end) and you can overlap two pieces, hold in place with vice grips, and drive two self taps. Works great.

    Using bolt cutters for a crisp edge like this is genius. Thanks for sharing. I don’t have bolt cutters so I’ll be buying them for this purpose - any advice on what cutters to get? There’s so many out there, and I don’t want to choose the wrong one (like maybe getting a sharper pair that would actually cutt through the edging)

    Should have made 2 cuts in the last piece in the middle that way you would have had factory joints at both ends. They make a stake to hide the seam where you cut the middle piece.

    Is that common wormwood/mugwort growing in that garden? Looks like what we generally call sage down here in Texas. I have a whole back yard garden and front driveway garden which has such in it. They spread very well and are drought tolerant down here. I have tried to find the same exact plant this year, but none of the garden shops have the same. As a funny thing, my big, black standard poodle takes a daily dump in the middle of the ones in the back yard. I really love them, as they hold up very well and do indeed have a unique look to them. Thanks for the video.

    • @jimjacobs146
      @jimjacobs146 4 года назад +1

      Exactly! Edging along a drive or walk is unnecessary. You dig an earth edge (v-shape trench with the edging side straight down) to hold the mulch or gravel. The purpose on edging on the lawn side is to make a nice sharp line between the lawn & plant bed and to help keep the grass from encroaching. The edging should be installed deep enough that you can run a mower over it and not have to trim. Defeats the purpose to leave it stick out of the ground that much. I dig an earth edge next to the edging to make it easier to install to the right depth.

    On the last piece, how did you ensure the spot where the stake lined up perfectly? Do they always line up perfectly, or do you sometimes have to make a cut shorter to line up the inserts for the stakes for the two female pieces?

    Are you cutting the full width of those bolt cutter/lnippers or is there any certain cut length necessary prior to bending the metal edging at the sharp corner turns of that flower bed? Looks like you are making those cuts in the metal at about 1/2 - 1", but I just wanted to be certain before I try this on my own metal edging like that. I have even larger bolt cutters/nippers, myself. Unfortunately, we have had so very much rain lately, that I have not been out to get this project completed with the metal edging. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so those pegs or stakes attached to the metal edging are a real trick to get off for me. Trying to find and easier way to remove them than just wrestling with them as I have done.

      I typically insert the bottom of the edging an inch in the ground. This edging was replacing existing edging so it went back at the same height.
