- An excerpt from the musical "You're All I Need To Get By: The Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell Story" by Michael Ajakwe Jr. In this scene, Marvin Gaye (played masterfully by William L. Johnson) and Tammi Terrell (played equally as well by 20-year old Ashley "Tamar" Davis) record a tune written by two of Motown's new but very talented songwriting team of Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson. Performing as the legendary Funk Brothers Motown house band are Keith "Beetle" Price (drums), Earl Harris (guitar) and Scott "Bugs" Allen (bass) / The smooth melodic background singers you don't see are the amazingly talented Pamela Walker, Sy Smith, Caren Handley and Sonja Maia Harper. [This show was performed live at the Stage 52 Playhouse in Los Angeles in front of a live audience April 1 & 2, 2002].
Their singing is phenomenal ! they didn't miss a single soulful nuance of Tammi and Marvin's voice on that classic hit.
