  • "Death Is Their Destiny" is the first of eight punk films I shot on the King's Road between 1978 and 1981.
Originally shot silent, the film was striped and had music and a voice-over added in the mid-1980s.
Some of my punk footage also included in the Julien Temple film "Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten."

I remember going to the Catholic Club at 13 because it sold us pints of beer, no questions asked, and it was a teddy boy revivalist joint. I was introduced to punk in 77/78 by an elder stepbrother in more antiviolent, CND/ANL days, using nazi motifs as ironically as gay bondage gear, with mock fights on the dancefloor. Punk is about refusing to conform to stereotypes, expectations and labels, but being free to explore drugs, sex and sexuality without believing an act defines you as a person.

at this same time there was also an entire american punk movement going on but other than THE RAMONES it seems the british were completely unaware of it. of course it was also pretty much exclusive to the big cities (new york, .L.A., san francisco, boston, detroit, etc.) it wasn't all over the country like it was in the u.k. the u.k. being so tiny and all i guess fashion trends were not nearly as regional nor was the urban / rural divide nearly as severe.
incredible vid awesome somehow this "amateur" footage is more like a time machine in terms of really making you in a sense feel like yer actually there.

well people who needs attention are being themself too, thats how they are, those people exist in any group that ever existed. yuppies, hippys,, gangsters, rappers, punks, skaters. You cant change that. calling them fakes just because of their needs is out of place. every one has different needs.

It was 1980 when i first got into music and punk was very much alive ,,i flirted with the fashion but never really had the bottle to go full on ,,it wasnt a good idea to draw to much attention to yourself on the outskirts of Glasgow in the early eighties

They had council estates in Chelsea too, you know. Never heard of the World's End Estate? Besides the kids came from all over London, there was no punk "scene" in bloody Islington.

im speaking about kings road and its nearby areas in district chelsea, london borough kensington and chelsea, which has always been known for high property prices, snobs, etc. i think most of the young people filmed there were from that area. And i never said there waspunk scene in islington, but people in areas like finsbury park definetely had something to complain about even johnny rotten was from there, all these rich kids should listen clash, they were also hypocrites faking working class anger

It contained actual proper slums as late as the 1920s so... "always known" for high property prices, snobs etc, yeah nah I don't think so!! Also they had a thing called buses and trains that would get a person from the burbs and the shitty urban areas that got kids to that one spot with a cool shop where they all hung out, right Clariccy!!

Wow, really? Did you ever play any instruments & start bands? Go to shows? What was it like back then? Were other punks accepting of each other, sort of a camaraderie of common interests? It seems like a lot of punks today call each other posers, buy their prepackaged rebellion at hot topic, & try to out punk one another by wearing the most spikes & studs, & they care nothing about the music! It's kind of sad that everything becomes commercialized, a competition, or a stereotype, & often all three, & there doesn't seem to be any camaraderie among ppl who have similar tastes & like minds. As if everyone is fearful of each other & worry about what others think, & it shouldn't be like that! I live on the streets of SF, CA, & while I have met some cool ppl, the majority have been very self absorbed, out for themselves, & very judgemental about what is or is not punk according to them, "That's a poser! He obviously lives indoors & is a fashion punk! I bet he doesn't even know who Operation Ivy is! What a wannabe! I'm a real punk-I dig in trash cans & live on the street!" blablabla & so on. "Well, so do I, but I don't claim to be anything & I don't knock others for what they do or like! I've never met them so I couldn't say if they were "being real" as opposed to acting. How would you know if that guy was "real" or a "poser", anyways? Bcuz it does take one to know one, you know!" There seems to be a lot of insecurity in ppl, especially when they don't personally know who they are yet, are still trying different phases, & are worried about what others think of them. I have always wondered if at that point in time when punk was fresh, new, exciting, & actually had that real element of danger to it, if ppl who looked punk, made their own clothes & did their own thing, were more open & accepting to strangers of their kind? Like just meeting another punk for the first time & stopping to talk, becoming friends, rather than warily eyeing each other as they pass in silence out of fear or judgment. It's always nice to meet someone who is also open minded & doesn't care what one is wearing bcuz it's not important, & looks are deceiving anyways, but being able to get to know someone & be accepting despite any differences is extremely rare! If someone's not trying to convert you to their beliefs, convince you you're wrong in your ways/thinking, or trying to get something out of you, they're judging, stereotyping, & calling everyone fake! Nevermind the fact that they've never met before! I wonder if there ever was a time when ppl weren't so fearful & judging of each other? Now we have pop punks, frat boys sporting Mohawks & studded leather belts & jackets, money, capitalism, & consumers, everything is brand names, store bought brand new, instant gratification, fast food, disposable culture, everyone is so wasteful, & the only danger is of someone calling another names & ppl worried about how others view their image! It's all become so mediocre, generic & safe! Little toddlers sporting Mohawks & a sex pistols bib, elderly ladies with blue hair, secretaries having tattoos all over! Back then, did you ever imagine it would be like it is now? Did the punks back then share with each other what little they had? Was there a lot of friendships started by fights? I know that some ppl bond that way-fighting helps them connect with each other on some level & I've become friends with guys I've fought with (I never started them), but I guess in beating them up I passed their "test" & they decided that I'm not some wussy long haired hippy after all, so I'm worthy of their presence or some such thing, who knows? All I know is, not to trust anyone unless they earn it, be open minded & accepting of others differences bcuz everything can be learned from, & to observe everything, question everything & most important, think for myself! It's why I like reading about history of all sorts, especially ppls personal experiences & stories, everyone has some knowledge to share & everything is an influence good or bad, even pop musak! Crappy pop musak influences me to not write crappy, mediocre, generic songs & good music influences me to write epic songs! Everything has an affect on everyone, even if they're unwilling to admit it! Though, it would be nice if more kids would pay attention & think for themselves rather than follow the crowd, but there will always be more followers than leaders, I guess! RocknRoll!

Knute Lindstrom what was it like ? brand new and exciting! accepting ? more like 'accept nothing' connected yes- it lasted about 18 months as a 'movement' in music & 'fashion' - in spirit it is still alive. it was a bit depressing seeing how next generation 'punks' took it to serious with a million rules, no sense of humour and self destructive self pity (the opposite of what it intended). it was about change, constant movement... anything goes

Yes. By the time this film was shot, punk was just a pop-culture movement (with dress, music and behavioural conventions) masquerading as a rebellious counter-culture. But it's all good fun when you're 18.
