Thank you kirk, Believe it or not I am in the BAC local 1 in PA but am a Tile and stone mechanic. I have never approached the brick side of our local even as a side job. But we are using a ton of waterproofing systems now. The block i want to stuuco is on my 70 yr old cabin in Vermont. Never was painted so freeze thaw did a number on it. It is solid and sound but the faces of some block have broken off. I was going to repair those then stucco all of chimney. But this time i will paint it after to alleviate this occuring in the next 70 yrs. Thanks for all your vids. And Rock on!

Over the past few weeks I have watched and rewatched several of your videos because I am about to attempt to do a hard steel trowel finish over a newly constructed cinder block mailbox column/wall. I would prefer to have an unpainted finish for a more modern appearance. As for my particular project, I found yours to be the best instructional and informative of all the videos I could find and I think that I'm ready to give it a go. However, after going over everything in preparation, I am unsure of a few things that I hope you won't mind answering. 1. After cleaning and hosing down the blocks, do I need to do a scratch coat before applying the hard troweled thick coat? 2. If I scratch the initial thick coat, in a day or two, can I apply a second thick coat and hard trowel finish it, to help ensure that the block lines do not show through? 3. We live in southwest Florida. The sun is always brutal, humidity is rarely below 80% and we have about a 2 month long rainy season. With that said, what is your suggested sealer to keep a raw concrete slab appearance? Thank You
Happy New Year Jeni, if it were me I'd apply at least a half-inch or more this will ensure the grout does not bleed through when it rains. If it a warm or hot day, keep misting the wall in front of you with water. If the wall is too hot it will sock the moister out of the new stucco making it difficult to adhere and apply. If you want a smooth or steel finish this takes practice, you may want to hire help. lastly, one coat is all that's necessary but instead of 3/8 apply half-inch or more. I have cinder block interior walls that are painted. I just want to cover them up with a durable skim coat because I’m having an artist paint a mural inside. Would you recommend quick Crete bonding agent and then just a skim coat of finish coat stucco? Looking to sand the stucco for a smooth paintable “canvas”. Not sure if I should use base coat or finish coat stucco to do a skim.
Captain Kirk. Love all you do. Thank you. I want to stucco over a block wall. If I understand correctly, I can do with one coat, then use a green float to bring out the grain? Then, I can paint over it to match my house paint? Yes? Are the steps: 1) Pressure wash block wall @ 3K using gas powered PW. 2) Trowel on 1/2+ inch stucco mortar (Rapid Set Stucco Mix), 3) Float with Green Sponge Float. Other: a) Mist block before applying mortar if dried out after PW b) Mist stucco after floating for next 24 hours.

If you wait two weeks to give the color coat, are you going to scratch it? Or use a bonding agent before applying the color coat. Or nothing and the color will just bond on its own?
Morning Fish one dude, good question, a cementitious color finish will adhere or stick to this skim coat by suction or absorption, as they are both porous, therefor a bonding agent is not necessary. Tip: when you apply a color finish over a base coat or skim coat always hydrate the walls a bit so that both the finish and base coat bond very well as they will dry together. Hello Kirk I had my doublewide blocked up all round to replace the vinyl skirting They did a great job and even dug footers with rebar and they did not hog the block up but stepped them properly because of the hillside. They stuccoed over the blocks like your doing and the daughter sponged the finish and made it look real nice. after a year I have several hair line cracks in the stucco running up and down. It appears that the mortar between the blocks have not cracked. So how would you repair these hairline cracks here and there?
Lucien Alacard Hi Lucien, Mor-Flexx makes a caulking with sand in it that is the same color as stucco or concrete, in fact my newest videos shows this caulking. When it dries it's hardly noticeable. The hairline cracking is usually caused by ground movement. The ground get saturated with a hundreds of tons of water in the winter, swells, this creates cracking and sometime even worse as in buckling. It's tough to control the weight of waterflow anywhere. and no amount of stucco will stand up to this intangible force. best wishes, kirk giordano
I really made a mistake when I used the term stucco, I looked some of your other videos and saw you use the term skimming concrete over blocks and that is what they did. I had a friend pick me up some thing from lowes and it was in a tub and for repairing cracks in stucco. I used it and it sealed up the cracks but is not the same color as my concrete. Now I need to find a concrete colored paint. or I may just paint the whole wall a reddish Navajo brown color. I am a truck driver and not a mason but I was a painter in the air force and the painters have to do the drywall finishing. I should also note that this brick skirting around my doublewide performs no load bearing from the home but is just to be a a barrier against rain and wind blowing under the home.
Hello Lucien, if you're going to paint, use a quality paint that is thick enough to flood these hairline cracks and or caulk first. They may return but if you do the best you can, you will be happy. I won't advise on a paint brand as this seems to be your specialty. Best wishes, kirk giordano

If my outdoor fireplace is dry set concrete paver blocks with liquid nail, so I still apply the stucco like you did in this, or what do I need to fill the grout areas with beforehand?
You can use this system as your bonding agent caulking is not going to do much. You should have used Sika-Flex 1A polyurethane caulking for real adhesive strength🕵🏼
Hi Kirk, I have watched nearly all of your videos and I love the level of detail you put into them. I have a great respect for what you do as it is not nearly as easy as you make it look. I am in the process of doing my backyard remodel and have some small gardening walls that I made out of poured concrete. Some have rather large bug holes and I figured I could use Type-S mortar mix to not only fill in the bug holes but also apply a smooth steel trowel finish. From what I have read stucco and type-s mortar are nearly identical. Is this true? I appreciate you taking the time to respond in advance. Cheers!
Tom Paternoster it's made for laying Cinder block, bricks, or stones. It's actual very strong and cheeper than cement Portland premium plaster by about 3 bucks a bag. I have used it for retaining walls and fishponds as it's really strong. I can barely tell the difference but there is. Its much easier to apply cement plaster to a wall then this stuff. The regular cement plaster is a combination of common and plastic cement which gives it spreadability as well as strength. The type-s mortar/mason mix is mostly common, strong but does not spread to well. Best wishes. kirk giordano plastering

Hey Kirk love your advice, my retaining wall, I did 2 coats over new cmu block, made my own mix, 2 part Portland, 1 part line, 8 part sand. I worked in about 50 degree weather. First coat about 3/8" thick I scratched a bit, 2nd coat about 1/4 inch, I used a sponge at the end to float the sand a bit, I kept it misted after, now after a couple of days I'm getting coin sized bubbles here and there, just the fine surface is popping off not the whole second coat. Where did I mess up?
Evening Peter, only a skim coat is necessary over CMU blocks. Perhaps you did the first coat and floated, instead of scratching with a plastering scarifier. Then applied the second coat, this bond would not have been sufficient. Thus separation. How thin can you go? I have a bunch of stucco repairs on my house that are a bit rough and I'd like to smooth them out. I mixed Portland with find silica sand, and applied it with a rubber float. It looks fantastic. Didn't use a bonding agent and it seems to be sticking well because I Power washed the surface thoroughly. It's purely cosmetic, so it's quite thin. We'll paint over it later with the original latex. Should this work OK? Thanks
Good afternoon Japan dude, I usually go 1/2 inch thick minimum, so when it rains the grout line won't bleed through. If your painting, you can go a bit less as grout lines won't show through a painted surface, most of the time anyway unless it's too thin then you will have a perimeter crack within a year around each CMU block, that will indeed be seen by the hairline cracking per CUM block. Hi great video. Just wondwring what prep did you have to do to the block wall? I was told I need to scud the wall first, then a scratch coat and then a finish coat? Its a garden wall but would like to get away with one coat like your video. How do you know if you need to scud the wall. THANKS
Good evening Padraic, the term Scud or slurry are from days long past, both mean mixing either lime or any cement plaster be mixed and sort of painting this film on the wall to be protected. A slurry of lime has been used for thousands of years to protect, bricks, stones, and fill gaps, and even coat wood so bugs wouldn't eat it. It meant painting anything to preserve it with raw limestone in its liquid past form. Today, one just needs to pressure wash the wall and if not certain its clean enough to stucco over apply a bonding agent on the wall so the plaster will indeed adhere forever. Hello Kirk! I am going to attempt to re-finish a small wall at my house. It is 4' tall by about 70' long. I wanted to know, what is the best way to figure the amount on cement that is needed, I figure I will probably need to go about a 1/2'' thick since the block is pretty rough? I know its a beginners question but better to ask a pro, right! Hope all is well mate and really enjoy your vids, keep up the good work!!!

Hey Kirk, I wanted to do this to may backyard wall. I know when they do houses they use foam why don't we use foam on the block wall? I've driven around places and saw the stucco cracked over time so I figured that foam would prevent it from happening in the future. Or do you not put foam on it because the nails you'd use would rust the the rust would come through or the nail breakdown over time and your foam along with the stucco would fall off since the top on a bricks wall is exposed to water and what not or the brick soaking up water?!

I want to do a imprint with a roller in a fern pattern. Is a half inch enough? I'm doing a cinder block wall that is just like this one only a hell of a lot longer. Can you recommend a type of mud also?
Glen Johnson Hello Glen, I would say 1/2 inch is perfect,. I would wet the walls prior, some area will absorb more than others as this is natural depending on in the sun or shade or what behind them. When you mist these walls, use your eyesight to get the wall uniform in water absorption, other wise some areas the roller will go deep and other areas the roller won't make an impression, it takes practice for what you about to try. I would use portland cement plaster, I like lehigh premium plastering cement it's gray in appearance , but as an option, you can always use Lehigh's white cement plaster. I watched this video 3 times and while I admire the skill with the trowel, I didn't hear the answer to the question how do you tell how thick the wet layer is applied?
Morning Roger Shoaf, the thickness takes a bit of practice, the idea is when it rains and gets wet that the joints don't show through. If not certain apply a bit more than you think is necessary. Best wishes, kirk and family
StuccoPlastering Kirk, You are the master of plaster the sultan of stucco, and I have no doubt that with your experience you know by feel how thick a layer you apply. For a DIY guy like me that wants to do a quality job (usually taking far longer to struggle through than would be expected.) the question is how to measure the coating thickness. Your video was clear that it is better to err on the side of thicker, rather than thinner. I think if I was taking on the task, I would make a probe that had a stop that would make an additional dent in the mud if it was thick enough and not make the additional dent if the coat was too skinny. To be clear, my comment should not be considered a complaint. I appreciate both your skill and your tireless effort to share and explain the right way to approach things and to get the job done right. Thanks again.
Hi Roger, good point, when I was a union plasterer, I did fireproofing for the company on high rises in S.F. where it was my job to coat the steel beams a minimum of 4 inches thick, this material was shot on with a plaster pump. I did have exactly this kind of gage as our work and depth was inspected. If it was too thin, more had to be shot on. With stucco walls if it's too thin I may have to apply another coat, so I prefer to be a bit heavy also. Best wishes, kirk and family
Hi Kirk, my first project is an arched exterior enclosure. The walls are concrete and very wavy and bumpy and I would like to make them look as close to an interior wall surface as possible. I have a number of questions. 1. Do I still need a float or do I just use the steel trowel to smooth it out? 2. How do I figure out how much stucco I need to mix? 3. Do you think I should start from bottom to top or vice versa? 4. Can I go to just 1/2 the arch ceiling then work the other way? Lastly, if I want to get a smooth finish to paint and stencil, should I apply a skim coat of joint compound as a last step? Thank you so much for your videos!

Good evening Melvin, yes you can do this, when you end as far as you can go physically, than cut back the depth with a trowel and place scratch marks in the new work so that when you restart you have a proper cold joint. Hi Kirk: Have watched many of your videos. I have a DIY Stucco job on a retaining wall that was painted. I have used a grinding wheel to remove most of the paint and power washed it. I plan to do a brown coat and a top coat. Should I prime the wall with Weld Crete before the brown coat?
Thanks for that video. Question- we have a stucco house, so there is block and mortar underneath. Is there any trick to tell where exactly the block is? We need to drill into it. The odds of hitting block are high, but if there is a trick to tell to be sure we won't hit mortar, that would be ideal. Thanks in advance.
Not really sorry, by the way, just because the exterior is stucco does not mean the substrate is block. You can try tapping it with a hammer and listening if it’s solid its block, if it sounds a bit hollow you’ve hit grout. This takes a lot of patients.
Got a dumb question. I'm trying to stucco my walls (new concrete block walls), and the stucco just slides right off. (quickcrete one coat stucco). I did a little research, powerwashed the wall, mixed in 1/3 of a bag of portland cement per 80 bag of quickcrete stucco, and bought a godevil spreader and tried again. Same thing, falls right off.... What is the secret? Should I buy a different brand of stucco? I am at a loss what to do. Any suggestions deeply appreciated.
Hello Mom, Quikrete or Sakrete stucco both already have sand and portland cement in them. So adding more is not necessary. I'd suggest you just mix the quikrete and apply. Keep in mind a Go-Devel takes sometimes months of practice by professional plasterers to learn to use. I'd suggest a hawk and trowel. Or go on Craiglist and see if you can hire a plasterer for a day or two.🕵🏼
I’ve been doing this for years I can do a wall in no time I’ll give a quick tip I use I get a mixing tray the ones with curved sides you can pick one up anywhere I use just a mortar mix I can dry stack the blocks to or mortar them together I’ve even just used landscape glue in a tube and caulk gun I’ve tried it all ways but easiest way and some of you pros may say no but I’ve experimented for 30 years and I even currently have a wall 30 feet high I used landscape glue and mortar on the outside and it’s been standing for 20 years and it’s over a hill well back to the tip get the mixing tray with the curved sides mix mortar not real thick get trial that is width of the tray push tray up to wall curved side towards wall put trial in long ways grab a good amount and go straight out of tray up the wall you will know how much you need next time by the first couple of goes I can do a wall 200 foot long as fast as you can mix the mortar and never had a problem you can kick hit with a sledge nothing all the walls I’ve done have been standing for years and up to you on the finish you want it smooth make it smooth If a little texture I wear a garden glove and wipe my hand over it it gives it a bit of texture and blends it all together
Kirk can a guy go first and place material in the grout lines and then go over the entire wall once the M joints are dry? Or is that a waste of time? Thanks for any advice!
Evening Clifton, this is a waste of time, cover the complete wall or the mud you put over the grout will dry resulting in too many details to go over, plus you will lose a ton of cement plaster when it skips off those humps. hey kirk :) i'm planning on doing this to our wall in the backyard. we'd like to scatter several tile along the wall, how would you suggest going about this? is it ok to apply on wet stucco? ,,,p.s. that clip you have of you and your family is awesome. greetings from socal:D
Hi juanski11, thank you. in regards to setting the tiles, yes you can embed them into the mortar if you know how, If they are porous cover just the fronts with tape if they are sealed the plaster will wipe off. I would figure out where you want them and attach them first and let set, otherwise if they are larger and or heavy they can have a tendency to slide down taking the new coat of stucco with them, especially in cold weather. best wishes Socal D, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network

Thanks for the great info Kirk. My contractor put an 1/8" stucco coat on a block wall using the same portland mix as the joints. I hate to be the customer quoting youtube so I just told him if the lines still show in a week, put another coat on. Can he put another layer on top of the first with no bonding agent and can he use the same portland/sand mix the second time? Thanks for all you do.
I'm experimenting with plaster and I seem to have the right mix consistency and it seems to look and apply similar to what you have in your vid. However, my plaster is falling off the wall and not sticking so easily as yours is. Why would this happen? Too thick, too thin ? Not enough Portland/cement in the mix or something ? Please advise Thanks
Good afternoon Steve, more than likely to dry a wall, most cement of cinder block walls take the right amount of misting with a water hose to insure a proper mechanical bond for both the new porous cement to grip the existing porous wall and hold permanently, Or you may not be pressing hard enough or chances are you're using too much sand, wet sand sticks to nothing. Hey Kirk! I have a question about putting stucco on a block wall. If the neighbor has plants and leaves water (hardwater stains) on your side can you still stucco or would it eventually ruin the stucco over time? Its a 20ft wall. The neighbor is elevated. Will it be noticeable still having stucco?

Morning Fish one dude, good question,
a cementitious color finish will adhere or stick to this skim coat by suction or absorption, as they are both porous, therefor a bonding agent is not necessary. Tip: when you apply a color finish over a base coat or skim coat always hydrate the walls a bit so that both the finish and base coat bond very well as they will dry together.

Hello Kirk
I had my doublewide blocked up all round to replace the vinyl skirting
They did a great job and even dug footers with rebar and they did not hog the block up but stepped them properly because of the hillside.
It's tough to control the weight of waterflow anywhere. and no amount of stucco will stand up to this intangible force.
best wishes,
kirk giordano
Best wishes,
kirk giordano

Good evening Hungry Bird Dude, If you mixing portland cement with sand you can mix for hours without the worry of compromising the integrity of the cement plaster.
Most same day plasters like I Eisenwall, BMI, and or Rapid Set Stucco, do have limits to the time mixing,.
However, portland cement plaster can be mixed for a long time.
Sorry, I have not tried the fertilizer, I take it you're a longtime plasterer to have tried this and perhaps from the UK?

Hi Jason and Kirk,
If I am going to prime and paint do I still have to concern my self with the thickness to ovoid the moisture lines?
Glen Johnson Hello Glen, if it were me I would still go at least 1/2 thick, as this fills the grout lines also, to try and go the least amount which is 1/4 inch will not be to your long term benefit.
At least with a half inch this wall will be more sound.

Kirk, did that monster trowel start with square corners or what?
Evening Tyler Durden, no, the corners are not a full radius ,but instead flat at the end with just the tips of the corners being rounded. A bit complicated but I like it!
I buy these online at www.bontool.com.
I recommend the simple 12 X 5 for all beginners and 13 to 14 X 5 for the better plasterers, you can buy these at all the hardware stores, the trowel am using is like my hawk, large, as I can handle them well. Strong wrist from all the years in this trade.

Hey Kirk,
Great vids, what ready mix product from home depot would you recommend for this skim coat? Any stucco basecoat?

Can you use plastin cement instead of portland cement?
Evening Ernesto Martinez, do you mean Plastic cement?
If so, yes, plastic cement spreads great and is great for cinder block walls.
If you add common this makes the plastic stronger.
I use plastic and common mixed in one bag called premium cement plaster.
This way I get the best of both worlds.

Remember nothing adheres to a dusty, dirty, moldy surface.

I hope I get a reply soon enough. My husband says we need stucco base for masonry and another stucco coat of whatever color I want. Please tell me this is false . What kind of stucco and doesn’t we need two coats? Base and regular. I’m buying so he’s telling me 11 bags of each. My cinder blocks are not painted Please help.
Howdy, Miss, ask, and ye shall receive.
It appears your husband had done his research. If you have cinder blocks and want to stucco over them, you would pressure wash first, then apply a base coat, then when it sets and cures usually about two weeks, you can apply a color coat stucco finish.

EveningKylie, the foam won't work for any retaining walls whether they are built as concrete, bricks, or cinderblock, the way I'm demonstrating is the way to go.

Best wishes,
kirk and family
StuccoPlastering Kirk,
You are the master of plaster the sultan of stucco, and I have no doubt that with your experience you know by feel how thick a layer you apply.
Best wishes,

Do you think I should start from bottom to top or vice versa? 4. Can I go to just 1/2 the arch ceiling then work the other way? Lastly, if I want to get a smooth finish to paint and stencil, should I apply a skim coat of joint compound as a last step? Thank you so much for your videos!

Kirk G... Can a guy stop a stucco job in the middle of a concrete wall, after completing the first half and return the next day to finish the job doing a one coat 1/2" thick application, Also if the stucco touches the dirt, will it leach up rain water and harm the bottom of the wall. Health reasons is why I ask and I might not be capable of finishing the whole thing in one day. I'm still trying to stay active at 70 years. Thanks so much for what you do. Ky.

Yes, after you hosed off all the dust from a grinding wheel.
Nice Craftmanship!
Evening Angel, thank you.

Can you use straight Portland cement without sand?
No, straight Portland will crack like an egg dropped from a tall building.
Please advise

Good afternoon Steve, more than likely to dry a wall, most cement of cinder block walls take the right amount of misting with a water hose to insure a proper mechanical bond for both the new porous cement to grip the existing porous wall and hold permanently,
Or you may not be pressing hard enough or chances are you're using too much sand, wet sand sticks to nothing.

7 days after finished because the lime in the sand and cement will react to the paint if done sooner. A paint supplier told me
Water can’t ruin stucco or concrete, the water hard or full of minerals can make it look ugly and full of stains but can’t harm it.
