      If I were a 20 something young man who was looking for a career in the construction trades, I’d watch Kirk’s RUclips channel like an online course. I’d soak up his knowledge, and advice like a sponge. I would try to get a job with an established,and reputable masonry contractor with a long term plan to start my own masonry repair/restoration company. Specialty contractors of Kirks caliber are incredibly hard to find in the New England States especially here in Massachusetts. Kirk’s a Craftsman, and an artisan, who’s in a league of his own…

      They as in Mashatown or Curry should make 16 x16 or even 18 x18 hawks instead of the so-called largest 14 x14 which is okay for most but I'd prefer a bigger one.🤔
      Hears my challenge to Marshalltown or Curry or any plaster tool company in the world; make a larger Hawk I'll use it in all the rest of our videos, with a shout out to the company.🧞‍♂️

      "Achilles looks down at the boy and says, "that's why no one will remember your name." My favorite line,

    Nice work as always! Fun to see this done out of hand, I like your layering technique.
    Personally I try to avoid setting up such thick layers of plaster, but I guess the lime really helps there. The "old school" method to even out to thickness that my grandpa taught me, is to set up a render layer first and screed up the bulk, then finish with stucco. Watching you I realize it doesn't make that much of a difference in the amount of work, it's just different staging. The big advantage of rendering to me as a not-so-expert is that it gives a lot of room to play and make those big curves nice and even. (For the uninitiated: render consists of 6 parts coarse sand, 1 part plaster, 1 part cement and 1 part water, it's a somewhat lightweight mix that you can set to about two inches thick, great for roughing out. ) Oh and before bonding agent, we brushed on a watery solution of cement and sand to prime stonework surfaces.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  2 года назад +2

      Hello my friend, if we added that much sand it will be difficult to have it adhere, Each trowel full will continue to fall as there's not as much portland cement or the sticky stuff to make it adhere.
      In fact, it would sound like cows shitting on flat rocks, scary.
      We usually add only three times the sand to each part of stucco. sets much better with a lot fewer dropouts. Naturally, there are many ways to skin a cat,😉

    • @disklamer
      @disklamer 2 года назад

      @@StuccoPlastering I see your point, of course the mix shouldnt be too wet, and I should mentionit is essential to not move the render around on the wall.No smearing or rubbing or pushing or evening out or anything, do not touch it with the trowel, apply it straight up in blocks as it were, and only even it out once it begins to set.

Do you have a videos on skimming over existing rougher stucco and then if you don't want the sand to show through like on this wall, how to do it smoother (with out the sponge and water) or maybe I do want that? Kirk, I have a question. What would be the draw back or benefit if we apply on a cinder block wall USP 1144 first before we skim coat the wall. I am in a heavy debate about it. Because I do have customers which do have a stucco which clearly show's them cinderblock lines and I am under the impression USP 1144 might eliminate this for good because it seals all the concrete so water no longer can penetrate into the wall. Let me know what your take is and product maybe been a better choice. I have a small cinder block building to build up here soon at my new Property and do like use something which blocks off them lines once we skim coated and painted it.
    Best is to see how you use the lime because down here in Florida not a lot of people know it. I am from Germany as you may know by now and yes LIME is the GOLD standard when you want to have any stucco to last and look professionally done.

      Howdy. If you can pressure wash with at least 3,500 PSI strength, this micro etches them or scratches the surface. The idea is to rough them up to clean any dust, dirt, and moss off. So that the new stucco has a porous surface to cling to. If you prime them, the stucco won't adhere at all or at least not long. I have watched most of your videos. Your a great teacher and I'm hoping you can answer my question. I want to learn to carve concrete so it looks like rocks. I don't have the funds to import carving mix to practice and wondering if you could help with a homemade mix. I found a place that suggested a bag of Portland to 2 pails of sand with 2 shovels of clay. What kind of clay do they mean?

      Good evening Michael Gallagly, where the grout lines show either paint the wall or simply add more stucco to correct the problem. 🍻
      Anywhere the stucco is it's separating was not pressure washed expertly, pressure washing is the groundwork or the foundation to having stucco or cement plaster adhere permanently to any wall, no matter what the substrate is.
      Nothing and I mean nothing; adheres to a dirty or dusty surface, at least not for long.🤔

    Comment and Question: I purchased the baseball catchers knee/shin guards base on your recommendation and they are the best leg protection I have ever used for all the reasons you mentioned. Thanks! QUESTION: You refer to the 2:1 ratio of plastic cement to lime mixture in this video. The 94 lb bag of plastic cement and the 50 lb bag of type S lime are about the SAME VOLUME as each other at my local Home Depot. Is the 2:1 ratio you mention in this video by volume or weight. If by weight, the recipe is ONE bag of 94-lb plastic cement and ONE 50-lb bag of Type S Lime. If the 2:1 ratio is by volume, then TWO bags of 94-lb plastic cement and ONE bag of 50-lb. Thanks Kirk. I love your videos.

      Hello, my friend, No, we applied the stucco thick enough; thus, when the wall gets wet with rain or dry, the grout lines would not ghost or bleed through. Yes, this wall or your wall can now be primed and painted.💃

      @@StuccoPlastering that’s great. So adding the extra lime makes plastic cement harder or at least hard enough at the given thickness therefore providing an impermeable surface. I love how simple great job. I create Gfrc elements/ faux rocks/ waterfalls/ liquid metallic flooring and much more but my materials are so expensive and after viewing your video I’m going to be testing more plastic cement/lime possibilities.

    Hi Kirk, thanks for all your videos. You're great at what you do.
    If I need to build out more than an inch to blend with the surrounding parge. How would I do that. Can I apply 2 scrach coats to get the thickness that I need? I need about 2 inches.

      Evening brother, on the eight-foot wall to create the radius I applied almost 4 to five inches dead center and feathered in the radius from there.
      You have to realize when the mud sets, then apply the next coat.
      I had some monster cracks at that location, that too I knew would happen, I gave the wall two weeks then caulked those cracks with Mor-Flexx caulking, it has stucco sand in it.

      @@shyft09 howdy, I can see why the confusion. We are adding 4 to 6 inches to radius which I prefer not only the so-called plastic lime they sell here but extra lime too. The common stucco I used has lime but not as much as I wanted. As an applicator in the USA, I am hand-cuffed to certain materials. It is up to me to improvise in any way I see fit. 😉

      Good evening Chris, excellent question, we plasterers used to buy bags of common, used for strength and plastic, used for spreadability combined for all our mixes.😏
      In the last 30 years, bags that contain both are now widely available.
      Plastic is what this country calls lime, but it's really not. It's less expensive by product.
      Thus I needed the extra lime as I knew we would have to apply or spread up to 4 inches in some areas; thus, I needed extra spreadability.

    Hi, Kirk.
    So that I understand, Weld-Crete (or similar product) is not necessary for a "naked" concrete/cinderblock wall. Like the wall in this video, you pressure washed, then started the stucco. But if the wall's painted, then you apply Weld-Crete. Right, so far? I have an exterior foundation wall, some of which is smooth, and some is chipped off, and I want to stucco it. Weld-Crete would be a waste of $$ and time. Just pressure wash (3000 psi) the foundation and go for the stucco. Am I on the right track?
    Thanks for another great video. RG

      @StuccoPlastering  3 года назад +1

      Good evening Russel G, indeed you are correct. But do you underside the reason why?🤷🏻‍♂️
      If you do not allow me to explain, stucco adheres to a porous wall by suction.
      If a wall is painted it is now somewhat sealed, even if it's not painted very well the paint applied would still be seal enough to not allow new stucco to bond or weld to it permanently, Thus a bonding agent would be required or it will separate. 😉
      Whats porous mean?
      Take a brick, for example, wet it; it darkens, why? Its porous thus absorb water or moisture.😎
