    I have a couple of Little Buddy heaters and my cat walked in front of one and brushed her tail against the guard and her tail caught on fire. Luckily I was right there and grabbed her and rubbed out the fire, I took a large guard off a kerosene heater and placed it in front of and a couple of inches away from the heater and there were no more issues. You might want to add some additional protection for the cats or place the heater where they can't get in front of it.

    I commented on motorizing your solar panel positioning but also thought of RainX. It is a hydrophobic product and wonder if that would help them clear themselves? There is the original liquid and then there is a car windshield washer fluid.

    It was so nice to see young Sarah's face!
    There are a couple reasons or so why you found squishy taters when harvesting. First and foremost it was the freeze they went through. Second it would be they stayed in the ground too long and were in the process of going to seed so to speak. And last, a very wet season can also cause the taters to rot. So, your fixes would be, to harvest before the first freeze, this would also take care of the second point above and last if your season is unusually wet just simply tarp the bed during the worst of the rain, but not for too long so the greens still receive light. Here in my climate of zone 5B I plant on St. Patrick's Day and harvest after the plants begin to die back. You would want to plant as soon as no frost/freeze is possible and harvest when the plants die back or right before the first freeze. Do these things and you should be golden. Also, keep in mind that the seed tater used could still be there, but it will be rotten and no good for eating.

    Martin, I spent 2 years in Chicago back in the mid-80s and had the same trouble with finding reasonable snow-wear pricing. Keep in mind this was before online shopping! I found that a snowmobile suit worked GREAT for me! I just looked on Amazon and if you don't care about the name brands you can still get a suit for a reasonable price (not as reasonable as in the 80s, but then again, wages were less then too!). Good luck with that snow!

    From my experience, when the potatoes freeze in the ground, they get mushy and can rot. I tend to use those as seed potatoes, and rotate where they are planted. Nightshades, like potatoes, and tomatoes, shouldn't be planted in the same spot year after year or planted one right after the other, like potatoes then in the same spot the same year tomatoes. They carry a fungus like blight that is transferred in the soil.

    • @LiberLady
      @LiberLady 2 года назад

      Interesting, the Back to Eden Garden guy, Paul Gauchi, always plants his potatoes in the exact same spot. He doesn't have the issues you mentioned. However, my sister has her tomatoes in the same spot & she is dealing with blossom end rot. So, I conclude the issue could be soil depletion issues.

  • @sonjaellis6704
    @sonjaellis6704 2 года назад

    Just a thought, my Grandmother taught us a special way to protect and harvest our potatoes. Just before the first snow, cover the potato garden area with @ 6 inches of straw (not hay). It will insulate the ground so it doesn’t freeze to hard. Then when you harvest, gently remove the straw. When done harvesting, put the straw back so the ground doesn’t freeze.

    I just ordered some gloves that have the ends of the fingers removed so I can fly my drone in the cold. I saw a Canadian fisherman and camper using them. Solar panels keep getting more efficient, and they hope to get to 50% efficiency soon which may be the best they can do harnessing sunlight. Would putting a hood or ledge on top of the panels help keep the snow off of them since the wind is likely from the north or NW? We live in Tennessee, however right now, I would prefer the Florida Keys, where we plan to camp in February.
