    Love that you tried the full english breakfast - you had it in what we would term as a Workman's cafe its one of the known places in London were workers (construction workers in the area as well as local office workers) will come for a quick, cheap lunch - because it usually arrives really quickly and is cheap. Lots of places like that around London.
    If you come back and want to try another pie and mash place try Mother Mash (same sort of ambience with tiled walls etc) - its in Covent Garden or there's one in Carnaby Street - you get to choose different flavoured mash and sausages as well as your pie but you also get to taste an old british fav from the war called bubble and squeak and don't forget mushy peas with fish and chips!!
    If you go up to North of England you will have to try a deep fried mars bar - take a mars bar into a fish and chip show and ask them to cook it in the batter - never tried it but apparently its amazing.
    Sheanna you always make me smile with your upbeat personality and kudos to Thomas enjoying jellied eels and black pudding...not if you paid me!! ;-) haha.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  2 года назад +3

      Thanks so much for your kind words mate. So happy you are enjoying our content 😄 Mother Mash sounds right up our alley! Every time we visit the UK we wish we had longer (and bottomless pockets of $ 😂) there’s always another pub or restaurant on the already endless list to get to. Loved brekki in the workman’s cafe- quintessential English experience! I’m already excited about our next visit whenever that may be! Thanks for watching 😄 Cheers, Sheena

    As others have said it's great to see a video where traditional rustic food is being eaten (when you had the tea with your "Full English" bet you didn't notice it came in a mug and not a tea cup; now thats what i call tradition). spot on guys 👍

    PS: thanks for reviewing the cabmen's shelters. I've seen loads of videos of people visiting London and mentioning the sites and places to eat but i've never seen anyone else mention the green huts before.

    *_eels_* - Not sure why but I skipped eels. Normally they would be a must eat just to say I tried them.
    *_bacon butty_* - Is the HP sauce typical? My bacon butty was bacon and butter only. Seems like I missed out. I had the option to put tomato sauce or HP on my chip butty but I went with just butter on that as well. I did zero research on both.
    *_black pudding_* - Had it multiple times during my visit. Quite tasty. In fact, the very first thing I ate after arriving to London was black pudding at a pub near my hotel. They were cut into strips and then pan fried on all sides. Great snack with a couple of pints.
    *_full English_* - Not a huge fan of baked beans for breakfast but tried it of course. My full breakfast came with fried potatoes but I really wanted bubble and squeak. 😀
    Excellent series, guys. London was a home run...despite the choripan!

      I'm English and I've never tried jellied eels, in fact most English people haven't. It's a regional (East London) thing.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Tosh, hope you get to try the eels on your next visit- we had them stewed as well but we preferred the jellied. Toppings for your bacon butty is very much a personal thing I believe- some are firmly in the HP camp, others prefer tomato sauce and some like it just with butter. They had bubble and squeak on the menu at the Regency- I wish we'd had time to go back for another meal there- I would definitely have ordered it. Love that black pudding was the first thing you ate upon your arrival! And neat that it was just a pub snack. So glad you enjoyed this series mate. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

    The parsley liquor is a left over from when the pies had eel or oysters in them (parsley is a traditional fish sauce in the UK). The pie filling changed to minced meat but the sauce stayed parsley. In Victorian times, fried fish used to be a northern English thing and fried potatoes was a London thing and nobody really knows how or when they came together? You'll struggle to find a Monte Cristo or a Reubens sandwich in London and as beautiful as those are, sometimes bread, butter, bacon and HP sauce is all you need? Maybe add some mushrooms too?

    I feel that a lot of people can diss British food but I never felt that way. I for one can appreciate British food. It's one kind of food I've become so accustomed to and can't live without even though I've been brought up on an Asian diet. I'd honestly choose British food over French or even Italian if I had to make an ultimate choice. Though it might not be as 'varied' as some other cuisines, there are seriously so many fine points and gems in British cuisine.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  5 лет назад +2

    You forgot to put the vinegar in the pie and we never used to eat it with a fork, always a spoon. Maybe times have changed in the last 35 years. "these black man cab boxes" lol you mean black cab drivers tea huts mate, you need a hackney medallion or the famous green badge to get inside. Mystical things happen in there, normally revolving around the page 3 bird of the time. Again, 30 odd years ago.

    I find it interesting that in all your videos you pile all the food together on a fork instead of eating each item individually. You do that for whatever kind of food you two are eating. I was wondering how many other people eat food that way or if it is strictly a New Zealand custom.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. That’s how to get the ultimate taste. Cooks and chefs think out a plate of food and put on it things that go perfectly together. A plate of food should have harmony across its elements. Some things more sweet, some more salty, something with more acidity (be it on a plate with different elements or within a single dish when cooking). We love playing with the combos and finding our perfect mouthful. When you nail your preferred combo it’s the ultimate food experience. It’s not just a New Zealand thing 😀 Hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Thomas 😀

    I love your videos, and the enthusiasm of both of you. My fav out of that lot was the tea and scones, and then the full English breakfast, but without the pig's blood sausage. That to me, was just downright nasty, along with the pie and the green gravy and cold jellied eels, YUK! and then woman's hands, without food grade gloves, all over your bacon sandwich [shudder]. Yeap, the term "British cuisine" is well and truly an oxymoron :). I'll have more videos please!!

    Love the atmosphere shots. My favorite spot for today was the cream tea place. I adore vintage kitchen and table wares! The cabbie stand was unique. Nice to know there are still some surviving and functioning. The first time I ever had a fried tomato was in London, back in the '70s! To this day, I can't eat a fried egg without an accompanying fried tomato...it's just a match made in heaven.

      You would have loved that shop then MsKestrela! I am a huge fan too but I didn't spend too much time looking as I knew I wouldn't be able to take anything home with me 😝 Too agonising otherwise! So neat that you have that food memory of the fried tomato- I reckon a fry up is incomplete without them- the acidity and sweetness cuts through the bacon and sausage perfectly. And then the fried egg with the oozy yolk just ties it all together 😝😋 Thanks for watching and commenting MsKestrela, hope you're having a lovely weekend! Cheers, Sheena

      @ChasingaPlate  5 лет назад +3

      😍😍😍😍 it's comfort food right?! The way to start the day right hahaha. Thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this video! Clotted cream is different to butter- it's full cream milk that's heated indirectly (like in a water bath) and then left to cool slowly. The cream content then rises to the top and forms the clots. Hope that helps mate! Cheers, Sheena

    • @shellygoodwin9530

      Melissa Hayden clotted cream is very different to butter. It is essentially really thick cream with a crust on the top. It’s a good job they weren’t anywhere near Cornwall when they ate those scones - comparing it to butter and putting the cream on the bottom is enough to get you ran out of the county! 🤣 always jam on the bottom and dollops with clotted cream on top!

    There's a fantastic traditional Scottish restaurant chain you will find all over London. It dates back to 1974 (!!). It proved to be so popular in London that it grew and grew and nowadays you'll find it in literally every town and village in Great Britain. It's called, I believe, "The McDonalds". Beware, though: even though it might seem like it has royal approval, "Burger King" is really just an American pretender. I know, shocking. So, you know, don't be fooled by any non-traditional American version of the Scottish classic, the McBig (?).
    Some of this information might be out of date. I only just got out of Broadmoor after a 68 year stretch. I'm afraid I was a little bit mad for a while there, but I'm alright now :)

      Fantastic Kakibot! So happy you got value from this video 😍 Well, I can't speak for the Aussies 😜 but us Kiwis love pies, roasts and big brekkies- all which stem from English cuisine 😃 It was awesome getting to visit some of the more heritage restaurants in London on this visit! Cheers, Sheena
