    Scents are deeply personal, and each man will have his own approach to fragrances. Some men would never think of leaving the house without one on, while others leave them for special occasions. Personally, we like what men’s style authority G. Bruce Boyer advocates - that a man should have a “wardrobe” of fragrances to choose from so that you can select your fragrance based on the needs of the moment. Depending on your preferences, that could mean owning 3 or 30 or 300 fragrances.
    That being said, experimentation can be expensive with fragrances, since you generally can’t return them once open.
    Even though there are thousands of fragrances out there for men, we wanted to choose a selection of classic fragrances that have proved they are worth owning and wearing based on their ability to endure over time.
    These days, fragrances with the most hype and marketing dollars tend to command the most attention, but that is rarely the way to find a quality cologne that you can buy again and again.

    I normally wear Creed or Penhaligon. Based upon the recommendation here I went out and purchased a bottle of Old Spice. I like it, I see it fitting in causal occasions, Saturday afternoons perhaps. Oh for those comments about it being a Grandpa scent Old Spice has an answer. On the box "If your Grandfather Hadn't worn it , You wouldn't exist." enough said.

    Old spice makes a glass bottle version that is a little more expensive but still very affordable, I don’t have the plastic bottle one to compare but many say it smells exactly as the Shulton one smelled and smells much better than the plastic bottle version. It’s called old spice original and has 2 lines through the the logo if anyone is interested

    Everyone seems so surprised that they like the original Old Spice. Is it the low price? Really, in terms of classic gentlemen's scents that originated in the golden age of menswear, it is the quintessential one. It was also standard issue aftershave for every American G.I. in WWII. There is no other fragrance with a more classic masculine pedigree.

    I typically use wood hue which is a fragrance developed in the 20th century and worn most famously by Dean Martin. It has a fantastic scent and I always get complements on it.
    The only issue is that it is no longer produced so getting refills is hard to come by.
    This video has helped me try to expand from that simple fragrance and hopefully save some of that wood hue for more special occasions!
    Thanks!

    I understand why you might have not liked the Paco Robanne, However I will always swear by it. My Great grandpapa and my father made great use of it, as do I. I will concede that I am a little biased, and certainly feeling a manner of nostalgia for the fragrence, however I have also never met anyone who'd come to dislike it, infact usually it was met rather warmly, its nothing overly special however it is certainly a good smelling cologne

    I actually like 4711, and some of the small pocket bottles they make are really good to carry around with you if you're travelling, especially if flying somewhere, but it doesn't really last too long at all sadly. Aramis, Dunhill, and Paco Rabanne are also pretty good.
    Overall I prefer the more classic scents. They've lasted for a reason I feel.
    So, it was a good test range, and I'll definitely be trying some of the others out.

    • @BryanRossthemanwithanose
      @BryanRossthemanwithanose 4 года назад

      I like it too. I feel like this video got mired down by misinformation. Many of the notes quoted were wrong and the whole effort to define where and when something should be worn is a bit silly.

    • @uha6477
      @uha6477 4 года назад

      I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about the notes personally. I go so far as to be able to say something smells of citrus, lavender, or some spice etc. Compared to mine therefore, some of these people seem to have the nose of a bloodhound.
      I do actually agree that some scents are perhaps better suited to occasions, evening events, or perhaps seasons though, but at the end of the day, it depends on you personally. It's hardly like turning up to a black tie event in board shorts or some such.

    While I do appreciate vintage clothes, older cologne recipes tend to make you smell a little bit outdated. Oakmoss was the big 80's note and I'm not convinced that you want to smell that way nowadays for instance.
    There are some very gentlemanly and more updated fragrances that I'd highly recommend. For instance Cartier's Declaration d'un soir (heavy on the rose but in a masculine way) and Lalique's Encre noir series that's more stereotypically masculine, heavy on the vetiver and wood notes.

    Paco Rabanne pour homme is awful. I bought a bottle (2011 reformulation) and it's very overwhelming and outdated smelling. Maybe if you can find a vintage bottle, it would smell better, but I sold it after the first couple times I wore it. Paco Rabanne Sport aftershave smells great, though.

    Somehow, these videos make me think that Raphael really isn't that much of a perfume connaisseur to begin with. ;) No offense, but some of those mini reviews really didn't do the scents any justice, even when taking into account, that the olfactory sense is the most subjective.
    Too bad you didn't pick one of the more unique and interesting Geo F. Trumper scents such as "Marlborough" or "Eucris". Those really smell like nothing you will find on the shelves today.
    Caron pour un homme is my signature scent btw...^^
    Und Raphael: Das 4711-Oma-Trauma scheint in der Tat ein exklusiv deutsches Ding zu sein. ;)

    4711 is by far one of the most masculine and noble fragrances out there! I use it every day.

    One that should appear in my opinion is Terre D'Hermes. A true gentlenmens classic.

    I am surprised you went with 4711 instead of Farina 1709 original. I had never heard of it until I visited Cologne. I find it a refreshing summer scent, and have received compliments on it.

      4711 is much more well known than Farina 1709. We wanted to focus on scents that were more well known.

    I have about 150 bottles of fragrance and if I had to choose just one for the rest of my life... definitely Pour Monsieur by Chanel.
