      Scotty since you are the akebono fan, can you tell the difference between proACT and performance? In some series, performance one is only about 10 bucks more to its counterpart. But performance one comes with metal shims. I am currently using proACT one with stock shims. Is performance one last longer? And is it ok to replace brakes with old shims?

    I just love how people rush to a stop. If I am a block away from a stop, I let off the accelerator and I start slowing down before I even get near a stop.
    Also Ceramic brake pads will last a lot longer just be careful they are not as effective when very wet. I just recently replaced my rotors about two years after I replaced the brake pads and calipers and the pads were barely worn down because I put on ceramic brake pads.
    A couple of weeks ago I went to a car wash and when I came out they were slipping but once they dried out they were fine.

    • @ramivalencia
      @ramivalencia 5 лет назад +4

      The brakes might not work immediately after going through a car wash because soap and water (and maybe even wax) gets inside the brake assembly and coasts the rotors and break pads. I've noticed the same slippage when getting behavior and my brakes pads are not ceramic.

      I'm sorry, but those folks who keep "creeping" forward for half a block before eventually stopping (if they even do) are more of a menace on the road. We don't need to slam on the brakes, but we don't need to be creeping up to a stop for what seems like forever either.

    In driver's Ed they taught me the only time to use your left foot on the brake, is when stopped on a hill. I follow cars downhill to town here every day, with brake lights on most of the way and I never touch my brakes. I guess these are the people that trade their car in every 2 years so they never need to replace their brakes. I have done many brake jobs so I know what braking involves and I go real easy on my brakes. If the light ahead changes I do not zoom up to it and slam on the brakes. Coming down long hills in the mountains I try not to brake more than needed and apply a series of light braking to keep my speed down, giving the brakes some time to cool off. Many people hold their brakes on the entire way downhill. Driver's Ed teaches people correctly, it's just that most people don't learn and just develop their own bad habits once they get their licence.

    • @2405jacko
      @2405jacko 5 лет назад

      It is a truck / bus driving principle, going downhill use your engine and lower gears to hold the speed as much as possible, only use the brake when your rpms go high. It is very easy to lose your brakes from overheating on heavy vehicles. People riding their brakes all the way down don't realize that by the time they get to the bottom the brakes will be cooked and not very or at all effective.

      To make your car last longer the number one thing to do is NOT LET YOUR KIDS DRIVE THEM!!!! I've worked on cars all my life, and I've seen allot of kids that abuse their parents cars when they are allowed to use them! Some of them are completely oblivious to the fact! They come and say, "I just replaced my tires six months ago, and their worn out already?"! And later in the week, we see the kid doing burn outs in his mom's car! THEY'RE CLUELESS!!

    Akebono and Wagner have the best brake pads from my experience. I use mine hard and they have 4 years 20k and barely any wear. Quality brake jobs are important as well. Inspect guide pins and replace the clips everytime you replace the pads. Replacing the rotors every time you replace the pads is typically a good idea as well. That will ensure everything has a fresh start.

      My 2005 Jeep Liberty is a perfect vehicle. It is built like a truck. I was a mechanic before retiring, and I maintain it regularly by changing all fluids and filters on a schedule, even the transfer case and differential. With 126000 miles on it now, it still has a lot of life in it.

      I have 183k miles on my 2006 Liberty. Never had a check engine light and the original transmission which still shifts great. I think all in on parts I replaced was less than a grand. Most expensive part I did was a radiator which I bought OEM and replaced it myself in about an hour. Other than that, just usual stuff that wears out like water pump, hoses, bushings, etc. Still runs amazing. The only mechanical issue I have is it uses oil. And that only started at around 165k miles. I top it off once a week and it's fine.

      I have a 2007 Jeep Liberty with 145K miles on it. I haven't had any major vechile repairs and things like the serpentine belt, and water pump are very easily accessible. It's through watching RUclips vids that got me into being a DIY mechanic and learning how to replace parts.
      But yeah once the engine or transmission give out, then it'll be time to say farewell.

      I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty Renegade she just turned 112,000 miles and has been in the family since new. It was always well maintained and never had any problems, I just got her in June of 2018 and just replaced the original front end and suspension and the original water pump thermostat and radiator. I'm very happy with my Jeep Liberty, the thing is maintenance and regular oil and fluid changes, my Jeep has been very reliable and I love the 4WD for the snow up here in Upstate New York.

    I recently replaced my pads and rotors because I had a squeak off and on for over 6 months, probably should have just lubricated the brake hardware then waited to see if it went away, but by then I had procrastinated enough that I just did it all because I was over hearing it. I even did my rear drum brakes, that was a bit of a nightmare on the first side I did; couldn't get the stupid parking brake reattached for the longest time. Of course, you have to consider others around, to not cause traffic stalling or unnecessary holdups. But in general, as much as you put in your cars kinetic energy, is good. But when you have to diminish that energy by braking, you lose.

      From what I've read on Jeep forums, the engine has very low tolerance for not taking care of it. If you go over on oil changes and don't flush the cooling, you have problems. I run high quality synthetic and have done my oil changes on time or early and flush out the coolant when it's time and have 183k and still runs great. Only parts (aside from the routine stuff) on the engine that isn't original is the water pump and radiator. And both are super easy to replace for a novice.

    In re, diesel fuel. Myself, I noticed that fungus growing in it didn't happen until after the switch to low-sulfur grades to improve emissions. The higher sulfur grades wouldn't allow fungus to grow. When I was working on semi-tractors, I needed to remove a fuel system component from a wrecked tractor that had been sitting in the yard for several months. While doing so, some of the fuel spilled on my pants leg in the process. I happened to have a minor abrasion on my leg where it spilled. I wound up with a persistent rash on that leg until I figured out the source. I suffered for a couple of years with it. So be very careful working with old diesel fuel if you have an open or partially healed wound.

    My Father has 175XXX miles on factory brakes, on a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel, the front pads are roughly 40% worn on a pad gauge. And the rears are about 50% worn.
