Genuine nostalgia. When I was a youth I worked on the Relieving Staff of the ANZ Bank. I rode a 1956 Triumph Tiger 100 all over Victoria Australia, when I often had to travel 3-400 miles away from home and would have to be ready to start work at 9am. The bike was fitted with very high quality leather panniers, that were the same as the ones that the Victorian Police used on their Triumph 650's and Aerial Square Four's. The panniers would carry my suit, shirt and shoes, with room to spare. I would then put the clothes I needed for the next 3 weeks into a suit case that I could strap across the top of the panniers. I would ride that to the nearest railway station and send it to wherever I was going to work. While everyone else doing the same job used a small English car. I saved a lot of money by using the Triumph Tiger 100, which I could then spend enjoying the social life in the new town. The Triumph Tiger 100, with its polished leather panniers impressed all of the town people, making me new friends on the spot. In country towns in Victoria, in the 1950s, most women drove their own car, but otherwise I just hired a taxi. It was the quality of the panniers that made the traveling the most enjoyable time of my entire life. Phil.
As an off-road (adventure) rider soft panniers have an advantage over hard panniers. If you drop the bike, and it happens, you are far more likely to be able to continue your journey. Hard panniers are far more likely to break a critical mounting point. From my time in the UK, I always pack gear that I need to keep dry in plastic bags before putting them in the pannier or rucksack. It helps setting up camp in the wet. Waxed cotton is fantastic material incredibly hard-wearing.
Yes Bernie, the other critical point hard paniers might break is...your leg's bone ! Soft paniers may avoid severe injuries as they act as a sort of crashbag. Been crashing a bush down a ice corridor in January while downclimbing (my mistake) and...a bush is much better than a boulder. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn ;-)
I've been an ardent fan of these bikes since I hit puberty, but there is something about your narration, kind sir, that makes me fall in love with these machines even more!
The video on the description of the bags is awesome. Always great to watch your videos, look forward to them. By the way loved the comment "RE had this written by a Russian defector, retired member of the KGB 😁"
Love it. That looks a great motorcycle for pottering around the English lanes on. Those bags look much better, more practical and better value than those stiff Triumph leather bags we’ve both had. I sometimes carry a long cable lock to weave around luggage, such as weaving through those double-D rings to deter a snatcher if just popping into a shop or something. I’m riding a Speed Twin at the moment but I’m considering what bike to down size to for my 70th and these Royal Enfields could be one. However my partner likes being a pillion so i take her into consideration.
Good looking bags, although your solution to security, to always keep the bike in sight, is probably a little impracticable. My solution on my Classic Chrome, is a pair of goatskin panniers (£60 from India), with waterproof inner bags (laptop bags, £10 each), which can be packed and then slid inside the panniers and then when you arrive at your destination simply pulled out.
Very beautiful video Uncle Stu. I am sure adding the rear luggage rack is next on the cards for you. Well here is what I have in mind....Trip Machine leather pannier bags on both sides and leather duffle bag on the luggage rack. That sure would look proper Vintage motorcycle explorer gentleman type. Plz do a video with Tripmachine bag fitted on one of the side panniers. Thanks for the great work.
I had a different option for my Classic.I am also a camper and I use them to go to the grocery; not fragile electronic and sensible gear as you. I bought the brand throw over saddlebags. Excellent video. I had never saw such a complete review about this Royal stuff, even Indian videos.
I had those on my Classic 500 but just could not get on with them....not enough storage, D ring closures a pain to manage especially when wet, but they DO look really appropriate on the bike. Mine is battle green, and so are ammo cans. Sooo....I machined some adapters to better support the bottoms of the cans on the existing pannier racks, machined the lids to hinge open sideways with locks installed and they can securely store everything I need...jackets, tools, water, fuel bottle, snacks and all completely waterproof. I used the big, 40mm cans that do look rather large but coming from riding touring bikes for so long, I just got spoiled with all the storage space and I refuse to wear a back pack. Love your channel. Cheers from across the pond in New Mexico, USA.
Was watching another of your vids and thought "I wonder what kind of panniers would be good for the RE.." of course I Google in circles and end up here! Cheers Stu👍
Good information. I just received my pannier set today and shall fix them as shown here. It is good to see someone like me- old school, slow and still rocking !
Thanks for the videos I love watching and learning from them, even an old dog like me can learn new tricks!. I have a 2019 black/chrome bullet/classic and have the same luggage but in black, I think I can help you with the rear mudguard stay fixing issue, as mine are not welded at the correct angle either, if you search the web for images of them I found that it would appear that they are at the correct angle for the sari guard! of course we don't have them over here - hence the issue, I also fitted mine with helicopter tape under the clamp just to make sure I didn't get any paint damage. also for others which may be considering this for their bikes I would suggest that on the Hitchcocks site they have the fitting instructions as a PDF which can be printed off in A4 size - helpful for those of us with age related eyesight issues !! having all these years and hundreds of thousands miles on motorbikes of all sorts I now only own one bike and I love it - age and physical ability mean its ideal for enjoing the ride and the english countryside - if I need to spend all day on the motorway I'll go in the car............. once again thanks for the videos and keep em coming........
Very nice indeed! I’m considering luggage myself, and didn’t think canvas would suit the chrome version. But it actually looks great. I would probably want some smaller ones, but it’s nice to know the style works on the bike 👍🏼
I bought similar racks and used two bits of garden hose to secure the one fastening point properly. The Royal Enfield version uses a smart top securing sleeve.
I just pulled the trigger on the 2020 Classic 500 Chrome Edition and really enjoy low end torque. Now I get it. Thank you sir. Happy New year to you too.
Really like the look of these panniers ,and the frames with the support at the bottom is a great touch they don't look to bulky either , great video as always Stuart 👍🏻
Mr. Filingham, your thumbnail drew me to comment: The look of those bags with that classic are hotter than a fourteen year-old's poster of Raquel Welch.
Very stylish Stuart, I like them. Looking very cool and retro on the bike with the full gear, enjoyed watching this morning over a cuppa whilst taking a break from work. :)
Great panniers and great video too... so much so I purchased a set (bags + frame mounts) when I was in southeast India a couple of days ago (albeit I won't mention how cheap they are in India) and I can't wait to fit them to my Classic 500 (Black).
I have these exact bag, though in Black. However even after a month, they "patina'd" to a light grey/brown/patchy look, which at first was a bit disappointing but at least now the "new" bags look as old and messed up as my bike. I don't mother my Classic 500. I go camping with it, off-road, jumps. It's not the Trails version, but it might as well be. As for the waterproofing, I am happy to say that they really are well waterproof. I was stuck on a highway at 110km/h in a thunderstorm for an entire hour. With heavy rain, my thoughts were "finally I get to try these bags out for their waterproofing" I got to my destination and I was pleased to open the bags and find all my gear was very try. Truthfully, they don't appear to be "waxed" at all. I'd be inclined to grab an affordable candle and rub it into the cotton on a hot day in the sun, just to make them double waterproof. My only issue I've noticed with the bags so far is that right near the seem where the top inner part you fold over and clamp before you pull the top cotton flap over has a very small fatigue hole from being bent upon opening and closing the bag all the time. While I am rough with my bike, I do treat her well. Everything gets scheduled servicing, and anything that is amiss is immediately attended to (This Monday I just welded up one of the front mudguard brackets that cracked from vibrations, and while I don't feel vibes through the seat, pegs and bars all that much. No more than my friends Suzuki GS500. I can sometimes look down to see the toolbox panel vibrating like there's something boiling in there. So I am not ignorant to the fact that this bike still vibrates itself to bits. I have a small toolkit in my bags which I keep there for all times, a spare inner tube, tyre irons, and the nuts and bolts which I know regularly will fall off. Even when I use red loc-tite. However, despite the bags fatigue hole and the lack of wax, they are waterproof in torrential rain for at least the first hour.

Bryan Bailey I took my first road trips on a 20 horsepower Yamaha, festooned with every saddlebag and sissy bar pack I could find and fit....55 mph was the limit....uphill however, all bets were off. But I enjoyed every slow mile.
Great point. One could use the Ural Delay Factor they would experience on the Enfield to secure the bags. Talk and work at the same time. Hurry isn't an option on these bikes.
Very nice and you can't complain at the price. They sit a bit too high for my liking but suit the bike. If the rubber packing shims are of the same quality as the rubber items on my old 1993 Bullet then it would be worth keeping a close eye on them as they may perish and disintegrate VERY quickly. Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video.
they look high when the rear seat isn't on but in reality they are not that high and are comparable in height to my old bmw's luggage when you look at the seat height
After a long search for matching panniers I just found these. Mounting the rails IS sort of tricky, but once it‘s done the whole set is sound and safe 👍. On the Battle Green it‘s simply a perfect match 😻. (I wish I had seen this film 2 months ago, but then again: Stuart, your film hits the nail! 👍)
Quintessentially British. The phone box and monument set in the countryside 👍Look good quality and whilst perfectly suiting our bike they just sit a little too high for me. Taking away the lines of that beautiful back end which, is why remove the rear seat monstrosity. I get it though. A compromise if you want to do serious trips away. The jury's out for me. Great vlog though mate. Stay safe 👍
I feel you are the perfect owner for this kind of a bike considering the 500cc is no longer going to be in production, Im certain you'll keep it in perfect shape for decades 😄
The footpegs have a lug welded on each one and a location hole on the frame where it bolts on.. I ground that lug off with a file.. Now the footpegs fold up without a problem.. I'm fitting the rear rack soon so the rear pegs will soon be superfluous.. 👍
I couldnt help laughing at your description of fitting the rails. I own a Himalayan and fitted the RE pannier rails, to say the experience was character building would be an understatement. The fitting instructions also appear to have been produced by the Mouse on the Mouse Organ printworks and buy the time the rails fitted my bike they were not the same shape as they were when i received them. To be fair, the RH side was fine, the LH one probably would have fitted a Harley Davidson better than my little Himi. But do you know what, i still love this little bike.
Very nice bags in keeping with the style of the bike, for me I would like them to sit a couple of inches lower as thy seem perched too high! Always a pleasure to watch your videos keep up the good work!
Can you tell me how good is the water resistance? I wanna buy these but i wanna make sure that my stuff won't get wet in the rain. I hope you can help me 😊
@@sakshampandhi I live in a place where we receive the heaviest rainfall in the world......no pannier is fully waterproof.....if you put your stuff inside a ziplock plastic bag then in the pannier, you are good to go.
@@bakitthangkhiew3409 thanks for replying, we dont get frequent heavy rains, but i just wanna make sure my stuff is safe. do you think an external rain cover would help?
I mounted these pannier racks this morning. Looks like RE has sorted out that wrong angle, mine went bang on. No fitting instructions included, but in this case, perhaps I was better off without! They look ok on the bike, but I wish they were made to sit closer to the bike. Looks like they could be 5-6 centimeters closer without interfering with any moving parts.
Fitted the panniers to my 2017 Classic Chrome 500 and frame was welded correctly and it fitted great without any issue. Not like yours with an incorrect angle. Have waited 5 months for a third fuel tank under warranty. Had ruptured at the left hand weld where the tank slips over the frame bushes. Any body had the same problem ? Dealer had 4 incidents of this failure.
They come standard of the Pegasus limited edition. I have been hauling them for 6000 miles though the lovely Irish weather - all seasons. They did become a but grimy - but washing them made them look like new. To re-wax them I uses a mix of paraffin and beeswax. When they are "worn" in an the straps less stiff, it takes me about 30 seconds to take them off. They do rub a bit against the mounting frame and wearing off the pain (which is unfortunately not the standard as used on the bikes) so there is some rusting with the heavy use in winter. However, it was easy enough to sand them down and redo the job.
Can you tell me how good is the water resistance? I wanna buy these but i wanna make sure that my stuff won't get wet in the rain. I hope you can help me 😊
I've had a set of these bags on my Classic Redditch Edition for a few months now. Like you I went for the khaki retro style but they also come in black. The rear frame fittings are indeed welded at a wierd angle but are secure enough, just look untidy. The replacement top shock bolts which came with mine were terrible, unusable with badly formed threads. The domed nuts wouldn't have fitted on them without damaging the threads. Luckily I was able to reuse the existing bolts, they were just long enough with a spot of loctite to secure the nuts. Incidentally, they are 3/8" BSF thread but with metric sized heads. Another quirk of the bike. I did consider a set of Hepco & Backer C-Bow panniers but these won out on price and their unpretentious workaday retro look.
Probably first detailed video on royal Enfield Pannier. Can you please answer some my questions What is the capacity of this ? And is it completely waterproof after your experience?
Hopefully there will be one similar for the interceptor. Not that I even have a motorcycle these days, but I am aiming to get back on the road by next year.
Stuart do you have any idea of whether these might fit the Bullet 500? Royal Enfield's catalogue says the pannier rails only fit the "Classic" variant, but I can't for the life of me figure out why - the two bikes are basically identical after all. RE info in the west has been known to be incomplete, so I wonder whether it is another oversight. Perhaps your expert eye can spot the cause?
@@Pound_Shift The trials have a raised exhaust though, right? The Bullet 500 has the same low, flat exhaust as the Classic. How do you like the trial variant? I was very close to getting one myself.
Stuart, I'm looking for the perfect set of Panniers for my Ravishing Red Int 650. I'd be forever grateful if you'd do a video with some cool looking and quality bags for the twins. Barring that I'd appreciate you thoughts in a note back to me. Thank you sir.

Enjoyed your video thoroughly. From USA 🇺🇸
Awesome! Thank you!
Bike looks great with the new bags !
I recently picked up a Classic 500, would love the find a tan version of this bag, I suppose the RE online doesn’t sell them anymore though
They pretty good to me, spot on look for the Bullet...
Nice looking bags that go well with the bike.
Good feel
Good bike Brother.....

However, it was easy enough to sand them down and redo the job.
ah thanks for letting me know, I shall reinforce the paint with some helicopter tape!
@@stuartfillingham Actually, that was exactly what I was thinking! :)
Hi Stuart. Could you please do a long term review of the military style panniers. I am considering getting these.
They look great, and great value
Iv,e got same bags .brilliant it hold loads great for camping . I scuffed mine to give them that worn look
Can you tell me how good is the water resistance? I wanna buy these but i wanna make sure that my stuff won't get wet in the rain. I hope you can help me 😊
This vid is what im looking for you said all what i want to know about the RE panniers thank you
I've had a set of these bags on my Classic Redditch Edition for a few months now.
Excelente video 👌 gracias por mostrar a detalle las alforjas 😀
Probably first detailed video on royal Enfield Pannier.
Can you please answer some my questions
What is the capacity of this ?
And is it completely waterproof after your experience?
Hi mate. They look the dogs dangle bits suits the bike great video. Keep safe mate
Hopefully there will be one similar for the interceptor.
Not that I even have a motorcycle these days, but I am aiming to get back on the road by next year.
I have these on my Meteor, great bags.
Great video. Do these fit the interceptor as well?
Me gusto mucho el video, la moto está preciosa con esas maletas
Hi Stuart, great video, i was wondering about the colour of the saddlebags? Do not seem to find them anywhere.
They suit the bike nicely 👍🇬🇧
Dear Uncle Stuart, where on Earth were you able to nab these beautiful bags? I must find them. Please and thank you.
Looks Amazing !!!! any advise to install theses panniers on Bullet Trial 500 ?
The chrome, wow well maintained, how you clean chrome in the rear shocks n keep them shining I don’t know.
I think an old .303 ammo box as a topbox would look the part.. Im getting the rack and panniers (with those bags) for mine..
Thank you for another informative video
Bernie - you should be concentrating on the American elections : )
Stunning bags, might also be a good looker on my new Himalayan :-)
Stuart, I'm looking for the perfect set of Panniers for my Ravishing Red Int 650. I'd be forever grateful if you'd do a video with some cool looking and quality bags for the twins. Barring that I'd appreciate you thoughts in a note back to me. Thank you sir.
Same for me!
Hello @stuart fillingham Thank You for your video. Do You know if these bags and supports can be fitted on Meteor 350? Thank You.
Very nice saddlebags. Where can you buy these?
