My RE Classic 350 Signals Edition has 4200 miles. After a recent 2400 mile trip I elected to change the oil (as I do after all long trips). I was surprised to find metal chips in the oil (below the basket) and a significant amount of bearing material in the filter. I followed the factory recommend run in procedure and maintenance schedule. Just FYI for your channel watchers, keep a close eye on your oil. Still waiting to see what Royal Enfield is going to do. I'll follow up with there actions/findings.

    Hi Stuart
My wife owns a Classic 350 in Halcyon Green as her first motorcycle here in Melbourne, Australia. As a former Triumph Thruxton and current Kawasaki Z900rs owner I was initially sceptical of Royal Enfield based on what I've read online, but I've been blown away and pretty impressed with Royal Enfield! It's been an amazing bike for her to learn on, and now we've just done the DNA Stage 2 air filter upgrade as you have done and what a difference it's made! So much more responsiveness in the low end and the increase in performance has been extremely noticeable. Great little upgrade for this model, and it's actually noticeable which is great. I've ridden her bike a few times now and it's made such an impression on me that when the time comes for my next bike in a few years I will definitely have Royal Enfield at the top of the list. Hopdfully by that point we will have seen a Classic or Bullet 500 in a single cylinder configuration, or if not a 650 version or even an updated Interceptor 650.
Great work on the channel, really enjoy hearing your views and opinions and look forward to seeing more Enfield and Triumph coverage 👍

Think I'll put the paper filter back in and see how long it takes to see a drop in effectiveness. I'm guessing, now this is really a guess, if you maintain the bike as you should, the filter will be changed before the drop is noticed. But with such an improvement, I could be very wrong. I have done this mod on a Meteor 350 and agree about the improvement in torque. The original filter cover fits inside the air box aperture whilst the DNA cover plate sits on top. The diameter of the resulting inlet ports is increased by 10mm. Not sure of the maths but the increase in area is what makes such a difference. More fuel/air mixture going in equals a bigger bang producing increased torque. Torque is what gives you acceleration.

  • @RonConsumer
    @RonConsumer Год назад +7

Hey Uncle Stu if you've been having issues with the speedo getting stuck at 20MPH or higher here's the fix. I had the issue with speedo right around 800 miles the first time I took off the connector and cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner allowed it to dry then reconnected and the speedo was fixed, it reset and operated as normal. Well, so I thought but it did it again at 1600 miles and I was going to get a new one from RE BUT I wanted to know why this was happening, so I disconnected it again and when I inspected the male pins there was a tinge of green which of course is corrosion and we all know what happens when there is corrosion and electronics... electronics go wonkie... so this time I put a light coat of dielectric grease. So far at 3000 miles I have not had any issues. I don't know if you've seen this where on a warm day you get condensation behind the glass at the fuel gauge and at times in the lower portion of the speedo. So my conclusion is there is moisture getting to the contacts and corroding out the pins and the only way to fix this is to clean the contacts and add dielectric grease to the pins so they do not get any corrosion.

    • @terceladdict

@@terceladdict It will generally happen during the days when the sun heats up that speedo assembly... When I was an engineering student, a friend and I did a tuning project on what at the time was my winter bike. The aim was to get as much power as we could without ruining the rideability. We chose a K&N filter which appears to have identical construction to the DNA item shown. I can testify that these work and work well with minimal maintenance.
Of course this was not the only mod. The bike was a 2 stroke single and had head, barrel and exhaust mods too. I'd choose this type of filter again though which I guess is the acid test.

  • @ShaunElliot-n4o
    @ShaunElliot-n4o Год назад +4

Interesting experiment. Here's a thought... If the ECU governs speed by checking the speed from the ABS sensor then the ECU must be programmed with the size of the front wheel. Since the hunter has a 17" front wheel the ECU must have a slightly different program that allows the front wheel to spin faster than the classic of meteor. So.. if you switched the ECU on the classic for a Hunter ECU the top speed would be limited to 75 x 19/17 = approximately 84mph indicated. Because the ECU thinks that the front wheel is smaller than it really is and needs to spin faster to reach an indicated 75. This of course assumes that the front disc and ABS ring are the same on both bikes. If the difference is in the ABS reader ring then perhaps that could be changed.

When you open the airbox cover, the side of the filter that you can see is the exit side. Air that enters the airbox through the holes in the cover will not pass through the filter. You might as well drill holes into the filter itself and the effect will be the same. It's unfiltered atmospheric air with all the dust it contains going straight into the throttle body. Morning Stewart. Informative as always sir. One afternoon in 1982 my wife and I went into a small custom motorcycle shop in Watford just for the ride and a look see at what's new. Sammy called me over and said what's this? It was a sleek sexy looking well made chrome air box that fitted all Honda 750 Fours. So I bought it along with some filter sponge spray. But when I went to fit it, I really didn't like the very light sponge filter that came with it. So into the shed and I dug out our spair pond filter sponges. Using the sponge that came with the filter as a templet I cut, oiled and installed the slightly more thicker sponge, then we went for a ride. From the off throttle response to the back wheel was oh so noticeable. And the only adjustment needed to the carbs was as stated by the shop owner. 'You might find you'll need to lift you needles up one notch', he said. And he was right. You could hear how much better the bike was breathing and with the original black box removed our K7 looked less cluttered side on. Better days for sure 👌. Good luck with your warrenty claim and I hope it goes through okay. Safe cruising till next time Stewart 👍😊.

Positive changes were easy to hear, see and feel: the motor runs firmer with fantastic growling bass sound, bike accelerates better (with awsome sound) and even increases speed while climbing steep uphill on the fifth gear. That was not an easy task to do with the RE stock air filter. Fibes got a bit more stronger, but that is not an issue at all. MPG or in my case KMPL got a little worse according to the initial calculations. Old configuration meant 2,7 litres per 100 km where as the new one makes it 3 litres per 100 km. Not a big thing and the positive changes override it with no sweat. Highly recommend the air filter upgrade: it makes the great bike even greater!

Here in Australia (NSW) we have funny regs when it comes to licence renewal tests (MOT tests) might have to check out whether a DNA filter would pass the test not being E5 etc rated.

It used to be common for induction to be direct into the carb ... no air filters at all. This is not so very long ago, either. So, I'd be minded to run the bike without any filter fitted, simply to observe the improvement in performance. If I liked what I saw, then I might splash out on a fancy air filter.

So went for a blast with a big hole drilled in the cover last night. Not a big difference in performance but a little induction roar. Then tried no filter or cover. Noisy as hell but did feel much more responsive but no difference in power. Today, fitted the performance filter and cover.
Still loud but boy what a difference in performance. Better off the mark; not much difference in low midrange but then almost 2 stroke like a power band at mid to high revs. Hits 70 very much quicker and would make fast A roads much more doable.
It’s noisy too. Do I like it? well yes but I feel it takes something away at low midrange which on small single tracks is where you want it. I’m guessing it could be giving you as much as a 15% power increase but at the expense of some low to mid range torque.
It improves the breathability of the bike to such an extent that your through peak torque before you know it and ramping the nuts of the old girl.
I experimented a bit with holding her at 1/4 throttle and in this way you can still ride like before.
Whichever way you look at it it’s a massive increase in performance but at the expense of considerably increased noise.
Need another blast when the rain stops to be a bit more definitive but I think it’s a mod worth doing.

    Wheelspin - on a Classic 350 😳 who'd have thought? 👍😁
I must admit, I was a little skeptical of this mod Stu. I honestly thought the performance benefits were a result of human psychology - hearing the increased induction noise tricked us into believing the gains were real. So, thanks for doing this - I was kind of waiting for my trusted youtuber to give us the honest report.
I don't like the various fuelling tricking devices though (Fuel X etc) as I still think it might be a bodge - akin to leaving the choke slightly on in the days of such a control.
Proper remapping might be the correct solution instead, but for Royal Enfield at least these remain rather elusive at the moment.

On my otherwise stock 2019 390 Duke the FuelX Lite acts nothing like a bodge. It idles more stably, has become smoother at low to medium revs and has become more usable below 6000 rpm. Most new bikes run extremely lean from the factory. This device targets a near stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. Of course, since it manipulates the lambda signal, it only works as long as the ECU works in closed loop mode.

Excellent video Stuart! I find DNA Air Filters can pay for themselves quite quickly if you actually use your bike! 😀
Prior to 2015 a lot of ECUs, but not all, were "self-learning" provided they had the appropriate sensors (O2 sensor etc). The usual procedure with those is, if they have a radiator fan, run the engine until the fan cycles once (switches on, runs then switches off). So if you want to add a DNA Air Filter to older bikes (usually 2006 > ) try that to reset the ECU...

Have 1500 miles on since DNA upgrade. Checked the plug and was a very light grey. Possibly a little lighter then the fawn colour that i’m used to with right mixture. Can someone who has no mods check their plug and report. As a lean burn motor it may be fine and there was no sign of damage to the electrodes. Unmodified( tried the fuel x for a year but it threw a wobbly and coked up the O2 sensor, so binned) got up to 90mpg. With this mod it’s doing 80mpg. Thats good news as it indicates the ECU is upping richness to counter the increased air flow. However I am riding at considerably more pace with this mod!!!

When new my classic was new it did occasionally appear hesitant on the throttle when pulling away. So bought the fuel x. After that packed up 18 months later with 15,000 miles on the clock, I removed it.
Now the bike very rarely feels hesitant and feels loser. No Doubt in my mind that bike feels nearly run in but a little tight at around 2000 miles but definitely takes 4000 to really loosen up. It then gets better and better. However definitely doesn’t breath brilliantly so have just ordered this kit on Stu’s recommendation here.
I think that the initial hesitancy may also be linked to compression. The engine breaking( compression) is great on this bike but when new may act to magnify poor breathing. As this drops off the poor low end breathing is less noticeable?

I've just looked up the prices of both the K & N, and the DNA air filter, there is a difference of almost thirty Euros, the DNA being the more expensive. Does the cost equate to efficiency. Certainly most of what l read the DNA allows greater airflow...allegedly... l have a K&N filter fitted in my Street Triple 675... (cleaned and re-oiled once)... Performance wise l noticed an immediate better throttle response, much the same as you describe...l guess it's all a matter of personal choice, and cost if applicable. Either way it's a cheap method of unleashing a smoother responsive engine with perhaps a small HP gain..Acceleration is often more useful than top speed anyway...Greetings from Red Hot España..

Would respectfully disagree about performance filters as almost all of them do not filter smaller micros as paper elements do. K&N was by far the worst offender as I have seen fine dust on the clean side of the intake when working at a ford dealer as a technician, these trucks however were used in a dusty environments(not what most would find on the road). There are different ISO certificates for coarse and fine dirt.
I do agree with everything else however and snorkels and filter covers are the best to get more airflow and again induction noise.😂

The new speedos that they are now supplying are supposed to have better insulation to prevent the same issues happening aging. I road 81 Km to the mechanics today and the speedo behaved perfectly. Another great video, Stuart. I have been wondering, as you ride the REborn Classic 350 more, do like it as much or more than your Classic 500? I recall early on, you noted you would choose the 500 over the 350. I recently spent a few hours in the saddle of a 2017 Classic 500. I found the bike to be about as close to a bike built in the 40's or 50's as one can get in modern times. However, I decided not to add it to my collection as I found it to be not as enjoyable to ride as the new 350. I just know that it would sit and I would choose the 350 to ride on any given day. With that said, it is nice and very old school. But, I find the 350 to possess all the charm and personality of the 500 with little to no shortcomings. The 350 J engine is pure magic in my humble opinion. I simply walk past my other bikes 90% of the time and toss my leg over the 350.

Having gotten a nail puncture in a tube type tire while away from home this model's cast wheels was another plus.
