Speaking as an Irish woman, it's great to see some Gaelic culture in a mainstream animated film. I honestly think this film gets way too much hate.
I would say that Merida walked so that Elsa and Anna could run, but that'd be incorrect, Merida doesn't walk, she marches, runs or rides.
In terms of animated films that accurately portray Gaelic and Celtic culture, it's pretty much Brave and the Cartoon Saloon films (Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and now Wolfwalkers), the latter of which are finally starting to get the recognition outside of Ireland they deserve. Though it is very annoying that Wolfwalkers is only available on Apple TV+ of all places... but point is, you're very right, it's very limited which I think is why Brave, as well as the Cartoon Saloon films, have such a special place in my heart. I nearly screamed with joy when I heard about Wolfwalkers and cannot wait until I'm able to watch it.
@@brinmoody I love Tomm Moore's films! Brilliant story-telling, and beautiful artwork. My wife and I actually named our first daughter Saoirse! Her personality definitely matches the name as well.
@@derrickowen8162 that's wonderful! Brónagh's on my list of potential future daughter's names for that same reason, cause of Song of the Sea! Though I'm leaning more toward the older spelling with the ch at the end instead of gh, Brónach. You're very right as well. Absolutely amazing storytelling and gorgeous artwork that I never get tired of watching! I'd say that Yeats and Gregory and the others of the founding era of the Abbey Theatre would be proud of their efforts in the Irish cultural renaissance and bringing those stories back into common media.

As a kid, I totally thought Elinor was cruel for forcing Merida to get married, and I still think it's unfortunate, but I see now that Elinor was just trying to secure a safe future for her people, and a good life for her daughter. Merida would almost certainly HAVE to get married at some point, as would a prince, because it strengthens relations with other kingdoms. Marriage, for a royal in those days, was a duty, not a choice. Elinor was trying to make sure Merida got the best option, because she knew that, like she herself, Merida would have to be married eventually.
I agree. When marriage is mandatory and divorce is unlikely: arranged marriage by parents it the best option.

I saw a twitter comment where a mother's young daughter watched Brave, and turned to her and asked, "Mom turn inna bear?" The mother tried consoling her child, saying that no, she wouldn't turn into a bear. But then the daughter stomped her little foot and emphasized, "Mom turn inna bear PLEASE?"
We had this movie on constant repeat when my kid was younger, and sometimes she'd pretend to be Merida and give me a toy cake that she made for me, special

You know, I like this movie for its realistic and human portrayal of Merida and Elinor. Each represents one end of the spectrum of femininity, with one being more crass and bold, while the other is more demure and elegant. And while we’re familiar with the stigma against strong and outspoken women like Merida, we also treat women like Elinor unfairly, like how we talk about “girly” girls in media and IRL. For example, we see Snow White as cowardly and Cinderella as weak. However, we forget that Snow White is only 14 during the time her stepmother tries to murder her, and the fact that she still remains positive and compassionate speaks volumes of her mental fortitude. Cinderella is an abuse victim and only wants a night out, just to catch the Prince’s attention. Her rescue is the direct product of her kindness toward animals weaker than her and again, that says a lot about her as a person. And what is wrong with wanting to love and be loved? Isn’t that the whole point about feminism? That women are allowed to be whomever they want to be, want whatever they want, feel whatever they feel? That women of all types are allowed to freely be themselves without judgment?
The thing is, strength isn’t a concrete thing. You manifest it in different ways in different situations. Instead of demonizing Merida or Elinor, Brave acknowledges the power in the former’s more masculine traits, and the latter’s more feminine traits. While Merida shows her strength by breaking the mold and challenging tradition, Elinor shows her strength in navigating the political playground and the lengths she’d go for her family. When they finally understand how love can be nurtured in their differences, they flourish. And that’s always how it should be.
TL;DR: I like Brave for showing that women can have different ideologies and be strong in different ways. We can celebrate women like Merida for breaking the rules without demeaning women like Elinor for valuing the rules.

Eh, if the witch had been more blunt and told her, "Acknowledge that you messed up and fix your relationship with your mother" Merida probably wouldn't have listened.

But that wasn't what needed to happen they both had to mend the bond if you do some digging that's what it truly meant her mother also torn the bond
also in lore and folklore such people like witches and spirits never speak directly they always speak in metaphor and or subtlety
... Because that wasn't what had happened? Merida was far from the only one at fault. Both her and her mother needed to have a proper discussion about this. She's the teenager, if anything she has the least blame because her hormones are out of wack fucking with her ability to communicate her feelings properly. Her mom should've been the adult, sat her down and DISCUSSED (Not ordered Merida to do her bidding) the situation.

Yes Merida is a teenager, 16 to be exact, and yes her mother should have sat down to discuss with her about the marriage but her mom thought she was being Crystal clear with Merida, and Merida definitely could have been a bit more understanding of her mother. I know teenage hormones are batshit crazy but still she could have asked in a kinder way for her mother to explain it to her.
Also if you’re going to say something like “She’s 16, and doesn’t/wouldn’t think to explain it calmly to her mother” or something along those lines
I’m 16 currently and am experiencing firsthand the shitty time of being expected to be an adult while being treated like a child, while simultaneously having the emotional reactions of a toddler that is being forced to take off their muddy shoes while entering a white room.
For the oldest prince, he realized that what he’s done in the past was wrong and the only way for him to be redeemed was to be killed. He did indeed say thanks for setting him free.

@@a.g.demada5263, I’m the youngest of three, but for me and my middle sister, it always feels like I’m the middle child and my sister is the youngest because of her disability. We used to be thick as thieves when we were young until we hit middle school, then our personalities made us different.
I remember watching it when it was first released in Edinburgh. During the scene when the Doric lad says "If he was a wee bitty closer I could toss a caber at him ken" the entire audience in the cinema erupted.

Merida was just 16yo in this movie. Imagine you're just enjoying your days as a young girl, studying stuff because you're the chief's daughter, and then suddenly your mother brings guys to marry you. We can see in the movie that her mother never really mentioned stuff like marriage, it's different from Jasmine for example her father talked a lot with her about this. I guess if they had talked before the story would be completely differento obviously
If my mom Brought someone to marry me (I’m 16) I’d immediately ask to talk to her about it to figure out a way to get a reason out of her and if that reason is good (like it will bring peace) then I’d be like yeah sure it might be fun.
I've said before this is just "Emperor's New Groove" meets "Brother Bear" in Scotland. But this is so much more emotional then when I first watched it years before. 🤧
I remember back than a lot of people where complaining that the tapestry was a "stupid way to fix the problem/magic", which made me wonder if they even payed attention since the tapestry isn't fixing shit xD

They change fate by calling off the marriage, look inside by actualy bonding with each other without formalitys/walls, and "Mend the bond tourn by pride" by forgetting there stupid pride and apologizing.
The riddle and what it means is one of my favorite part of the movie! So it kinda bugs me that some people actually thought the tapestry was the answer xD

People don't appreciate bagpipes because they've only ever heard their annoying teen neighbor playing them. Actual bagpipe music is amazing, I listen to it when doing homework sometimes!
Watched this movie with my mom in the cinema and towards the ending she took my hand and held it tight. We both cried after the movie ended and it was such a deep moment between us without us having to say a word.

Brave is a great movie and my favorite part of the movie is when queen Eleanor is just walking towards the kings during the fight and they just stop fighting and she makes them stop fighting and it just shows how much of a boss she already is.

Hahaha, it's funny seeing how other Scottish people react to Doric. It is an actual 'language', I'm from the area it's spoken in! Some of the words are mad, the stuff the guy in Brave says is actually pretty tame for Doric lol. Loved your reaction to the movie!

To be honest, I would marry the blonde son who no one can understand. xD He just seems like a big sweetheart. But this is such a great movie. I love it, even if some ppl don't. Merida is a kick-ass female princess and I always enjoy strong females like that. Also, the twins are great and the humor of the movie is just spot on. God, I'm glad you reacted to this. ^_^
I liked his his character too so much that i wish she chooses him. Some years later, i forgot where ive read about this, but apparently in the earlier writing of the film, he was actually the one who Merida ends up having a good relationship with and was hinted to eventually marry each other 🥺💗

I adore this movie as much now as I did when I saw it in theaters. Merida stole my heart the moment she said, “And I’ll be shooting for MY OWN HAND!!!!” Plus her hair made me feel so much better about my own.
Scotland IS the best country in the world. Or at least the best country I know. I went just two weeks and I felt home. I felt more welcome there than I ever been in my own country (France) and scottish people are the kindest, nicest, sweatest peoples ! Scotland is beautifull ( gorgeous actually) in the outside and the inside and Brave actually give me nostalgia. I want to come again sooo bad ! T^T

France is different in many ways, I won't say it's not at all friendly, it can be of course, we're not evil xD But we're not the most inviting people, because proud and grumpy by nature (look at our strikes, it's like... our national sport !), and it can be hard for tourists if they didn't learn basic french. You'll have better experiences outside Paris also, this big city can be traumatising, even for me. I'm very proud of my country, but I can't say it's the most welcoming.

yeah so the guy nobody seems to be able to understand is speaking Doric, it's a dialect you get around Aberdeen area up the north east, I can understand it for the most part but it takes a bit of warming up to, some guy came up to me in the shop and spoke to me in doric recently and i had no idea wtf he was on about
I'm American, and 99% of what he says might as well be Greek, but the bit at the end when his dad asks if this is what he wants and he says, "It's just not fair" etc I can actually pick up. It's right on the edge of understandable.

I am Scottish, but I've never been to Scotland, and it is the ONE place of my ancestors I would LOVE to go to. Even though I was born in America, I wish my parents knew Gaelic and taught it to me when I was little.

Welchy, the lad you cannae understand is speaking the Doric, fae up Aberdeen way. At the end he says "it's no fair makin' us fight for the hand o' the quine", quine being the Doric word for lass/girl.
Merida is the best Disney Princess in my oppinion, she is one of the few who actually says "Fuck it, i will do it myself" and show that she can pull her own weight.
Sure, Mulan is cool but she is not realy a princes and Moana is also nice, but she does not do much by herself... most other DPs need to be rescued, but Merida does not.

Merida is my favorite Disney princess. I love this movie and cry at the end almost every time I watch it. It hits me in the heart because it is about a mother daughter relationship that is strained but eventually comes to a satisfying resolution. It reminds me of how me and my daughter had our rough years when she was a teen but now we see each other for who we really are and appreciate one another. I actually had my daughter say to me how she never wanted to be like me just like Merida does to Elenor. As a parent it breaks your heart when your child rejects you but if you both learn to LISTEN to one another then understanding can develop and you can mend the bond torn by pride.
Also, You are absolutely correct in that Scotland is very beautiful. My best friend is Scottish and lives near Edinburgh. I can’t wait until the pandemic is over so I can visit him again and see more of the gorgeous Scottish countryside.
I also related to the mother/daughter dynamic in this movie, it's why this is probably my favorite princess movie. When I was a teenager I tended to clash with my mom a lot. But even if I tried I could never hate her. Theres still some unresolved issues but we're doing much better now!
mayeli prado Yes, the mother/daughter dynamic is a challenge for many. I’m glad to hear that you and your mom are working through it. As you both get older hopefully you will get to see different perspectives and come to a mutual healing. The bond between mother and daughter can be a very powerful one.
I spent a few years of my early childhood in Colorado, and we had lots of bears living near us. I think seeing them in person once or twice as a 6-7 year old left me a bit traumatized, because I still think they are the scariest animals. Those black dead eyes are just creepy.
That being said, Mordu used to give me shivers when I watched this movie years ago. 😂
I've loved Brave from the moment I saw the first teaser for it. It got so much negativity from people used to Pixar's usual humor, who didn't like them going in the direction of a Disney fairy tale, but it's just a wonderful, heartwarming and GORGEOUS film. As a daughter who had many a quarrel with my mother in her time, I really appreciated the tale of a daughter's bond with her mother. It's a refreshing theme we don't see much.
I never actually thought much about Scottish culture I am from Poland and thanks to both Brave and HTTYD and your reactions I truly fell in love with Scotland.
The thing about this film, is that....it reminds me, of me and my mom. Lol. My mom's name actually means 'She Bear', lol. And she can be overtly protective and demanding. And we have hurt each other with our different personalities and ideals. But after watching this film...I just gave my mom a hug. It really put some things into perspective for me.

Fergus is my favorite character. He reminds me so much of my older brother...like the looks and charisma, he's hilarious. Just like my late brother Mitchell.
Merida was played by Kelly McDonald known from boardwalk empire, her father was played by Billy Connoly, Lord Macintosh was played by Craig Ferguson known from the Drew carey show, Lord Dingwall was played by Robbie Coltane the guy who played hagrid in Harry Potter.
Kelly Mcdonald is also in Harry Potter. she's the Grey Lady in deathly Hallows pt 2. come to think of it, isn't Emma Thompson (Queen Elinor) Trelawney?
Brave is a favorite, the scenery is beautiful and I would love to see your beautiful country one day. I'm American but have both Scottish (mom's side) and Irish (dad's side) roots.
Did you notice that it's the Queen they all take orders from and not the King? It's likely, though I haven't confirmed this, that Pixar depicted Brude Scots, whose line was traced via the mother, not the father.

its quite interesting in the movie the queen had triplets and survived. Most of the time at least one of the 3 has its head the other way around and they won't get out without help. Given the fact that they had nothing, most of the mothers kinda died

I'm not even Scottish or even European, and I love Brave. Merida is one of my favorites despite how Disney likes to paint it as their worst but it's their best because it doesn't jump on its Disney princess tropes. I'm not trying to suck up or anything but I've always liked the Scots in almost everything about them, their just down right fun.
I know that the actress who did the Mother is the same one who did Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter.
Elinor is played by Emma Thompson. Really love her.
Also, i just love Scotland. The ethnic music, stories, the gaelic language, the landscapes... That's just amazing. I dream to go to scottish Highlands sometime, those emerald green hills are captively beautiful.
I am Croatian but would love to visit Scotland one day, mostly because of this film because I LOVE it!😁

Brave was some of the first animated movie ive watch, it's a special one for me, i was hurt (in a great way lmao), like when Marida cried hugging her mother, i broke.

I know I'm a little over a month late but I have to say, I haven't seen many Scottish people reacting to this movie and I'm glad you did. And even though I'm not Scottish, this film holds a special place in my heart. I've had this type of conflict before with my mom (minus the whole arranged marriage and turning into a bear thing 🤣) and this film just reminds me that a bond with my mom is irreplaceable. This film makes me emotional every time
I just love the message of this movie and how it is about a mom daughter relationship and understanding each others. It's just so cool and such a refreshing princess story. Also this movie always makes me miss Scotland so much, can't wait to be able to travel back there again soon-ish. It's such a great place and so so beautiful!
I can agree, the bagpipes as a musical instrument are very underrated, they bring out the soul in the most perfect time
You should react to Outlander. It really shows the beauty of the Highlands although the storyline can be quite dark and violent.
This film is so underrated. I cannot believe it isn't talked about alot more than it is. Such a roller coaster of emotions. The scenes with Merida and her mother really hit home. As most mother's and daughters clash at some point over something. Myself and my own mother were no different. Loosing her hit hard. So the scenes where you can literally see the changes in the eyes for when her mother was a bear really hit home. For me I really felt the desperation to get her mother to be human again. As the risk of her becoming an actual bear was brought to light. I cried so much at the end when she thought she had lost her mother for good. Only to find that she hadn't. I'm now a mother myself and I've got it all to come with my daughter. So I really felt both sides of the tension between them. I loved the way they did the scene where both Merida and her mother came out with what they would say to each other if they were in front of each other. The two separate scenes being done simultaneously was beautifully done.
It's a good thing that this film was loaded with comedic gold. Otherwise I would have been a blubbering mess the entire time. As for the scenes containing the beauty that is Scotland even in cartoon form was purely epic. I have to agree Scotland has stunning areas.
True other countries are filled with picturesque beauty too. But since living in Scotland as a child at various points in my childhood. After being born in Wales. I don't know there is just something about Scotland that always draws me in. As far as I'm aware I don't think I have any Scottish heritage unfortunately. But I hoping somewhere along the line I do because it might explain how strongly I feel connected to such a beautiful country. I feel some connection to Wales the country I was born in. But I don't know it's stronger with Scotland for some reason. Both Wales and Scotland hold a special place in my heart always will ❤
This is one of my favorite movies! I loved the culture and animation style. And the beautiful music they used, especially the lullaby Queen Elinor sings to Merida as a wee girl makes me tear up every time. It's just so deeply beautiful. You were absolutely right, "listen" was the big theme in this movie.

I'm Scottish and love this movie. love the music too. It's great to have a Disney movie that doesn't require the main character to have a "cute" animal companion and have songs throughout it (yeah it has a couple but the characters themselves arent singing the things). Also, imo it's a huge plus to have the main character a girl. Too often it's a boy.
As for Scots not being able to pronounce "girl" yeah I agree; it's "gurl" 😀

This is one of my favorite movies ❤, when I watched it for the first time, everyone in the theater was crying when her eyes turned black at the end. There was a lot of moms & their daughters, I think it might’ve been Mother’s Day? Something like that. But it’s an amazing movie 🥰

My dad's side has a lot of scottish heritage and according to my DNA results I also have a bunch. As a redhead, I was very happy when this movie came out. Of course now if I wear my hair down, I get called Merida. If I wear my hair in braids, I get called Anna from Frozen or Anne of Green Gables. If I wear it in a ponytail I get called the fortnite default skin.

YES!!!! I love Brave. not much into Disney Princess movies, but this one is my most favorite!
why though. brave is shit cuz it missed what the story was meant to be. she bitches about not wanting to get married and all this but in reality she likes big guys. as an example she was in aw with the super huge buff guy. you can see she perks up more when they were introducing the sons the bigger they got. you could see her reaction as wanting to marry the strongest guy. so this movie isnt about independence its just a brat throwing a tantrum is all.

Billy Connolly plays the king, Emma Thompson plays the queen, Kelly Macdonald plays Merida, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin Mckidd, & Craig Ferguson play the lords. Julie Walters plays the witch. Englishwoman here. I absolutely love the bagpipes. Such a beautiful, expressive and mad looking instrument. It's awful when played badly but so are most instruments.

Bagpipes are amazing. I'm from Nova Scotia, your lil' cousin in Canada, we have bagpipes for every major celebration. My parents had bagpipes at their wedding and I grew up with a lot of Celtic folksongs, always happy to hear them!
I never thought to find a Scottish watching Brave; I’m from Puerto Rico so it’s very rare to encounter anything Scottish as far as this side of the world...

@El Macho172 They meant tied for 1st as their favorite Pixar movie. Not that they are tied together by some hidden backstory or something...although that isn't impossible given the Pixar Theory.
@El Macho172 storywise brave has better story. but overall including animation, pop culture, etc. its based on personal taste really. and most lean toward incredibles
I also love the dad in this movie,he's the stereotypical brave,strong man but he also tries to connect with his family, and given the time and culture that's really nice
Brave is one of my all-time favorite animated films, both for the Scottish theme and, of course, Merida. She is voiced by Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald, who I adore. I have a Scottish heritage, visited Scotland for a week about a decade ago, and fell completely in love. It is the only place I would live autside of the five mile radius I've lived my entire life. I was glad to get a Scotsman view of this film, and enjoyed it very much. When I was young, I had a thick accent that had no origin. I was studied by a college speech department and they traced it to North Umberland. It was eventually trained out of me in elementary school and I can't even fake one today. I so wish I could. A Scottish brogue is my favorite manner of speech in the world. I adore Merida and her accent, plus her whole character ... makes me wish I was a young animated character! Excellent reaction!

Brave is my favourite animated movie alongside Mulan and Tangled, these 3 are also my fav disney "princesses". Brave is genuinely so underrated but i love everything about it & it has a special place in my heart.
