The wisteria do not have brachts that would grow into the stone, so they aren't deletorious to the building. Once they take hold, they tend to grow rampantly. The nice thing about wisteria is that they can be trained into beautiful weeping trees and can provide dappled shade when grown onto a shelf-like trellis over seating areas or above windows that could use shade during the hottest time of the day. They can be made into shrubs or columns, grown onto chain or wire to make swags or bowers.

The main problem is their roots, they get everywhere and run for miles, including into the drains, underground electrical conduits and pipework.

I'm not sure about in France, but in at least some parts of the US, they are invasive, which may be part of the reason some people are reacting so strongly.

My husband is a builder and, together, we built our dream home over 4 years. The work seems endless, but worth it. Your project is much larger and unusual. When I watch your crew working, I am reminded at how much effort it takes to get things right! Dickies Workwear 😄 That's popular in the US, too.

The wisteria will not destroy the building, as it doesn't set root in the walls and it only is supported by cables, until the stem is thick enough to self support. The only thing I've had is "rats visit". They climb the wisteria and enter any open window. So I would suggest a cat.

What an amazing thing to see those beams look almost like they are brand new, the color and immense size of them is awe inspiring. You have done a wonderful job with this convent Billy. You have a truly wonderful team that don't mind the hard work. Mick is amazing in his capacity of sharing his knowledge and working right along side with everyone, Simon jumping in and helping, Rick the muscle of the team, while Yanis is learning new ways of demo and reno. You have an amazing team. Martin is a master sandblaster, that ceiling is going to look beautiful. Have a great day.

I’d like to share with you what I know about taking care of roses. If you look on their Keynes, you will see they will push out three leaves on a shoot and five leaves on a shoot. Trimming the cane just above the five leaf shoot will encourage the rose bush to bloom again. Trimming above the three leaf shoot will end that cane from blooming again, thus causing a leggy appearance to the bush and very few blooms.

Imagine hosting intimate concerts at the convent; or rent out the space for a music teacher to teach organ or piano...what a grand space to perform in. Digital grand pianos don't weigh very much, and don't require tuning (which in old buildings could be an issue) and would look amazing. I'd go to a musical concert in any room of the convent in a heartbeat. The atmosphere would lend itself to any genre of music. The acoustics would likely be amazing.

I fear you're are misunderstanding why people were saying you should not put wisteria where you have. While I have no doubt the plant will be well maintained and managed above ground. the wisteria root system is really what could damage the building, especially an old building like the convent. Those roots could destroy the stonework and easily get into cracks and do a lot of damage. It will be very hard to manage their strong and large root system regardless of how attentive you are. Honestly I would simply talk to a arborist or something. We would all hate for your hard work to be destroyed.

@@catherinemoon3003 I'm no horticulturist but my understanding is that all wisteria tends to have these negative qualities and they are just differing levels of destructive. While the one he has planted may not be as bad as the worst type. I think it's still needlessly risky to plant them where he has and its definitely worth talking to a professional.

Simon is correct that as long as you keep the wisteria in control it will be fine, the problem is, it sends runners u der the ground and will pop up everywhere, and it grows so fast that you have to trim it several times a year. It’s difficult to keep on top of. We have it growing all over the property I live on and it grows faster than we can keep on it. It’s strangling out other plants. If you’re ready to keep the n top of it constantly, then yes, it’s beautiful.

The beams look realy nice. My parent's house in the US had a gorgeous wisteria growing on the front side of the house. Once in a while we's trim it back. Never had any problems with it.

I love wisteria, it is so beautiful in bloom. We had a beautiful one that survived a fence falling on it. We have since moved 100 NW and are on ranch land that can’t seem to grow anything but mesquite trees. The ceiling looks amazing!
