Deep in the wilds of the Vũ Quang nature reserve in Central Vietnam, the local people speak of a mysterious half man, half ape-like creature. To them, it’s known as the Người rừng or forest man. To French colonists who explored the area, it was known as L’Homme Sauvage (wild man). The American G.I.s who engaged the creature in active combat called it the Batatut.

Excellent video Joe - thanks for sharing 👍
AUS-8 is a highly under-rated knife Steel. It's plenty tough and has pretty good rust resistence (salt-water). It gets criticized because of its edge retention compared to more expensive steels that can cost at least twice as much and are extremely difficult to sharpen especially in the field
AUS-8 is fine by me, I love the OKC RAT1 & RAT2 with it.
agreee!!!! cool thanks!
I would say 14C28N (sandvik) is even more under-rated. Same edge retention as Aus8 but higher toughness and corrosion resistence (also AEB-L).
I like when you do these kinds of videos because you dont beat around the bush too much. Nice and short comparison .
thanks!
I’d love to see this done with the Chris Reeves knives. Only because I’d love to watch all those guys melt down like a candle in a bonfire.
yeah, i feel u !!!
Then you'll get the fanboys and gals saying how it's meant to be an "art" piece *yawns*.
I have 1 chr reeve hollow handle knife. I saw a torture test 14 years ago on you tube. It broke at stage 3 out of six. It's worth to much to test it like this gentleman did
I've had 3 SRKs.
Several Cold Steel.
Several Buck and Puma Sheath knives.
A couple Ontarios and many more.
But you had me at
the $18.00 Hultafors GK.
Great work setting the record straight.
awesome collection!
I have 2 Cold Steel knives. A USA made Master Hunter in Carbon V made by Camillus. And a Master Hunter in AUS 8 made in Seki Japan. I think these were the best years of Cold Steel manufacturers.
cool blades 4 sure!
I liked the thought of edge retention of harder steels but then I got a lansky sharpening system it takes ages.... Aus 8 a lot less and tougher
ok cool"!
It’s all the same once you get something like a cheap worksharp field sharpener with diamond abrasives.
I agree they should bring the AUS8 version back. I have the Recon Tanto in AUS8.
yeah, they should!!!!!!
Agree I bought mine over 10 years ago and the blade moves in rubber handle. I need new one❤
👍👍
Cold Steel has been used alot but still is excellent quality in aus8. Tho Victorinox swiis army knife steel is amazing! Nice comparison Joe. ☝️😎
i like AUS8 very much!
It is very clear even from this video, that the CPM 3V is the best version. Simply because it is the best steel from those you shoved us. The price is high, because the CPM 3V steel is expensive. Anyhow, for a 3V steel its price is much more than reasonable. Although, the heat treatment with this particular knife is not the best one.
The Carothers company does the BEST 3V heat treatment by miles. They call their blades Delta 3V.
I'm not saying I like high steel prices in the premium segment, but right after Benchmade Leuku, this Cold Steel SRK 3V is the second best option out there - for the money. (Only according to the steel used.)
Thanks for the video! I'm very sure now, I'll buy the CPM 3V version of this.
ok, i like the 3V also but the others more!!!!
Is there any knife you can't destroy my friend . 😆
Yes some
If price was no object...would it the change order of your preferences?
good question
yes sure, then the 3V would be first or second!
That knife can stab. Keep the good breaking blades work.👍
will do!
Thank you very much for this video, I've been wanting one of these for a long time, now I know which version is best,, 👍👍🗡️🗡️

cool, which u wanna get?

I actually carry the SRK-C in SK-V. I like it because it's very small and light for a fixed blade, does everything I might want a small belt blade to do and is essentially disposable. Mine was $30 and if I break it or, more likely, lose it somehow, I won't weep. Of course I'm not going to try and use it as a pry bar, a stone chisel or an axe. It's a knife, and not a very big one. It does, however, have one nice advantage: I can wear it all day long and practically forget it's there. It's not big. impressive, flashy or tacticool but it's there when I need it, it looks totally non-threatening and more like a tool and less like a "weapon". The knife you have on you is 100% better than the knife you leave at home because of weight, size or laws.
ok, nice choice!
Muchas gracias Joe X por tú apoyo a la comunidad fanática de los cuchillos 😁👊
mucho gusto amigo!
You said the SRK in 3V is too expensive for what you get. What price would make it worth buying?
100 Euro
@@joex Thanks!
Which one is better budget knife SRK or the Tanto I will buy one of those
both are cool!
2:40 that sounds so awesome. I need some flying broken steel asmr. I think I i could sleep to that.

oh yeah! haha!
Awesome compilation video.

So there are some variations of the length of the blade? So, wich one is most shirt and which one is the longest one? For me 28 sm its probably not talking to me. I must have at least 30 sm. I have Recon Tanto and SRK is to much expensive for its ability. If they have 25-26 sm, better I'll take Ka-Bar or Muela, Tac Force and Mtech are even better. The clip point is really nice, but not every clip point is bowie knife. I can get Ka-Bar, or Mtech, they are more solid, I thought that SRK is longer. than Recon Tanto, but in this case its so shirt... . And no garda is one more disadvantage.
ok, cool, thanks for the info!!!!!!!
Cold Steel seems to be loving AUS10A in their folders (I’m a fan). Hypothetically, if they made an SRK in AUS10A, would it be even better than the AUS8 version?
Thanks for the hard work!
they do , and S35VN
I totally agree...hope Cold Steel made SRK in AUS10A...the best steel so far...👍👍👍

I wish they would. I'd buy one.
Would like to see you give the Ka-bar mark1. I’ve had one for a couple years now and it’s served pretty well. Probably not the strongest but it would be neat to see how much it can take.
nice!
I just ordered the budget version SK5. The VG10 is cool but I think the budget one will be fine.
it will do his job for sure!
Do you think they’re stronger than Moras? The Garberg for example.
@@adammcguinness9950 stronger yes, more durable, i think it depends on the model!

What knives have passed your destruction test it seems nearly impossible? I think possibly a bk2 could with your prying without breaking but who knows?
check my "Top" playlist, all in there!
Any chance of testing the cold steel oss aus8? Keep up the good work joe, might order the srk in sk5 seems good value.
i will try!
It's a good value for sure, and a good Jack-of-all best-at-none knife design. It's a poor woodworking/bushcraft tool. Sure it will get the job done, but much less efficiently than a proper woodsman's knife. The SK5 steel is hardened to a high Rockwell hardness in this version. This combined with the hollow grind makes the tip particularly weak. Keep in mind knives with high hardness are brittle and don't take impacts well. It does have good edge retention and is easy to sharpen.
I'd suggest the discontinued aus8 or carbonV models they are much tougher.
@@MB-jg4tr cheers for the info. Is there anything around the same price point as the srk that you would say is worth loooking at?
@@kkownzor it's unbeatable for the price, and not a bad knife. What will you mainly be using a knife for? Woodworking/bushcraft? Survival? General blade tasks?
Good advice to keep in mind, I think you picked the best one for price and toughness.👍
i think it is the best, 3V is good too but to much $$$
Gerber strongarm ! The best 💪
a good one for sure!
As in life...everything is a balance of factors. In blades it’s Toughness, Edge retention, Corrosion resistance and now Joe X Survivability...

How's it going Joe X? I would love you to do a video on all the different versions of steels of the Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri in 3v, sk5, san mai, 0-1 and any more steels you can find. And also maybe do a head to head of all the kukris, machetes and extra large blades, that would be fascinating. Cheers mate

I knew before I even watched the video that you would chose the Aus8 & unfortunately they don't make that version anymore & I can't get Aus8 anywhere in the UK been after it for sometime 😏
yeah AUS8 Version is out of business!!!!
These knives seem to break so easily compared to the Ka-Bar. It seems like the best selling point of the SRK is the low price.
Aus-8 is not an impressive steel, imo. I had a sharp Sog Seal Pup Elite in Aus-8 (their specialty steel) and I stuck it the dirt and it was immediately dull.
they did ok!
great job joe

The SRK could benefit from
a more rigid handle material.

Hallo Joe.
Zuallererst, ich finde Deinen Kanal super. Mach weiter so. Abo lasse ich Dir da.
Meine Fragen:
Hat sich bei den Belastungen auf den Messern von Cold Steel(SRK und Master Hunter) der Griff gelöst oder ist locker geworden?
Was würdest Du bevorzugen, Cold Steel oder ESEE?
Über eine Antwort würde ich mich sehr freuen.
Gruß Chupa
griff hat sich fast nie gelockert, CS ESEE sind beide gut! aber ESSE 4 5 und 6 sind glaube ich besser als CS

The original SRK in carbonV (proprietary 1095CV) is the strongest IMO.
i think so! broke later than the AUS8
Joe im sorry but there is no universe that aus 8 could ever beat 3v in edge retention. Unless you got the worst heat treated 3v ever. The only thing aus 8 steel has over 3v is its actually stainless not semi stainless. If you do an edge retention test like i mean cutting stuff youll see that 3v lasts way longer. Ive seen many edge retention tests and aus 8 scores very low.
