A little update: I would be careful about the 6in knife in a 7in leather sheath, as at a certain angle the knife may poke a hole through the sheath. Also I don’t think the Srk in 3v is discontinued, it may be the recon tanto.
I was on Midway shopping for .308 bore site laser cartridges and saw this exact version for$99, so I jumped on it & it arrived today. The sheath is pretty tight, but will still release the knife, but I'll definitely be getting a kydex sheath made at my local Black Rifle Coffee shop. I'm pretty excited to work the CPM-3v too!
I just opened a soup can with my SRK 3V and a rock. Still in perfect condition. Sheath is fine, it just needs to be broken in a little. The one single thing that DOES suck about the sheath it comes with is no drain hole.
The flat surface of the knife drags the entire length of the sheath. I got a bit of sap on my blade and it wouldn’t go back in the sheath. I also got the blade a bit dusty and it sounded like sand paper going into the sheath. Would love to hear how to “open up the sheath”...
@@dlrmon1 the bumps in the sheath that contact the spine push the edge into the sheath...file down the bumps...no more push..no more drag...if you can't figure that one out you probably shouldn't have a sharp knife!
@njzeigler4370...Ha Ha...Be there, done that. It helped, so did reprofiling the edge. The problem I at least have is the flats of the blade and sheath clearance...
@@dlrmon1 I filed the raised portions about an inch inside the sheath that contact the flats of the blade as well as the ones that contact the spine.. if you remove enough material which is not much a couple hundredths of an inch you won't need to touch the blade.
Good video - excellent review. I just ordered the OD green version of the CPM-3V SRK from Midway about an hour ago. The OD green and dark earth versions just came back in stock. Oh yeah it was on sale for $99.99.
Haven’t got it yet, I’m hoping I have better experience with the sheath but I doubt it, probably like you said will have to get a custom sheath. I still think it’s a good deal on 3V provided the heat treat is good. Sad they haven’t updated to the new grind. I will update if my sheath is better!
@brentmellinger1798 My sheath is a little tight, but it works just fine. No issues at all. I'm keeping the stock sheath. The reviewer had issues with his.
In TOTAL agreement!! I have the SRK in sk5 and totally love it, they make razor blades out of sk5 in Japan. However, the sheath dulls the blade after about 6 insert/pull-out movements, total piss off.
Interesting comments about your sheath issue. Sorry to hear that, bro. My 3V SRK from Midway USA had no sheath issue and fit just fine without having to force it. Maybe Cold Steel had some bad batches or something. Anyway, the SRK is a great knife! 👍
Hells yeah just got my 3v last week and love it ! Yeah the blade is more robust and a more flat saber grind too but I'm using my old sheath until I make my own.
May I suggest you remove the portion screwed to the back that holds the strap and the try again. It looks like it has been lowered by one hole and may be causing unnecessary pressure on the back side. Just a thought worth suggesting.
I have both the Italian and Taiwan 3V versions. Also a San Mai version. My Italian stone washed blade somehow is thinner than the others and the handle keeps coming loose. Cold Steel warrantied many for that reason and I believe over compensated on the Taiwan 3V version and made it thicker. Now the new one fits to tightly in the sheath which it’s irritating. My San Mai blade is a great knife, a bit chippy though. I haven’t had that problem with my newer 3V, it tends to roll first... If you get a little sap or something on your newer 3V SRK, it will not go back in the sheath. Also if you’re blade is dusty or dirty, the sheath is so tight it will scratch up the blade.
Anyone know where I could get the green handle? For 3v I think it looks much better than the black but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Did it get discontinued?
Nah, it ain't because it is CPM 3V. I recently got a Master Tanto in San Mai. The two bumps are so big they will not allow the guard to pass. I found it quite ironic because my old Recon Tanto (in Carbon V) will fall out if you turn the "SECURE x" sheath upside down. I also have a Warcraft 5" in 4034 Stainless. I could have got the knife inside the sheath if I hadn't given up. Wasn't the little nubs, the sides of the sheath actually drug on the flats of the knife like it was made for a blade 3/4 the thickness of the one it comes with. I absolutely can not stand watching a review and seeing sum1 praise the sheath. To me, it calls into question everything they said about the knife. I have to wonder "do you WORK for Cold Steel?" Now, their fixed blades? OH F Yea! I have several and want more 👍 I have just accepted their knives do not come with sheaths (like Glock plastic sights). My Master Tanto rides in a leather sheath made by Michael Spanjer of "Spirit of the Bear Sheaths". I can not say enough good about it, it is wearable art. Seriously, smartest purchase I've made in years. Next Cold Steel I buy, he will get emailed right away 👍
I never had a problem with a cold steel knife or sheath. Mine are older, haven't had a need for a new one one I believe cold steel got sold, that might be why it's products are going south.
@DelightfulHelmet-mc8su I don't think the buy out was why. My Recon Tanto is from way back (Carbon V days), thr knife is awesome, the sheath sucks. My Master Tanto is new production and the knife is amazing..... and the sheath sucks. The only Cold Steel sheaths, I've seen, that don't suck are thr original LEATHER ones.
@adods9824 Yep! I have an old Gerber Australian Bowie that has a Cordura sheath. It's legit. It sucks to see a company make great knives and ship em with dog shit sheaths BUT that is the deal we sign up for when we buy (current) Cold Steel. Just look at the price of the knife and ADD what a decent sheath will cost (if you're not set up to bend kydex). It is what it is.
I just got my 3V SRK yesterday; I don’t think the sheath is that bad in my case. It is definitely a snug fit and there’s no click, but the extraction will happen with a little extra pull. Also, where did you hear that the 3V version is discontinued? It’s still available through Cold Steel as well as licensed retailers.
Hey friend, kabar has a kydex sheathe for the ka bar. I wonder if that would work since i personally dont know any one who will make their own kydex sheathe. I know people do it, im just saying for those who would rather just buy one well now they can.
I just got a dark earth colored SRK in 3V. My knife won't even fit in the sheath. Not even when I force it. There is definable an issue with some versions. I love the knife though so I am buying a leather sheath on Etsy. We will see
I totally agree about the sheath. I have the SK5 in both the full size and the compact. I carry neither edc BECAUSE of the sheath. I just paid $150 to get the CPM3V...didn't even wait till the video was finished. 😂🙂

I bought one in 3v and the wife saw it and took it away from me, so I bought another one, funny how that works, now we each have one.
