    Thanks for sharing this. 12:00... spent many days as a school boy mid 1990s under the old GCR bridge spotting and cooking on a camp fire. Great school holiday memories ❤️

    Once a mighty rail line connecting two major cities and now all that remains is a single freight line. Once lived in Stocksbridge and would have loved if Woodhead stayed open, would have made getting to the airport at Manchester easier. I hope they reopen it

    Yes a nostalgic ride I worked on the railway at Deepcar STN in 1972 before going to London and returned in 1980 to work as a relief signalman at Sheffield Victoria covering the boxes between between woodburn jcn and Deepcar this as been a nostalgic ride the best route to Manchester

    I love going down these red routes from my 1984 Rail Atlas. One of those bridges you could see the catenary for the overhead dc.... Thanks for the vid!

    When I lived in Yorkshire, I used to regularly ride my bike from Penistone to Dunford Bridge, and from Woodhead to Glossop on the route of the former Woodhead Line. Thanks for sharing this video. It is fascinating to see what is left of what was once Britain’s first electric main line.

    I never travelled this route and cannot remember it. I can remember some points on Route. like Chesterfield platform 3, Tapton junction, Barrow Hill Station (Not Shown) and sheds, Sheffield Victoria . I can also remember collecting coal from the trackbed near Whittington Moor, my Mum and Granny would carry it in their aprons and I would have a children's bucket. The firemen would often throw some off. Many thanks for this.

    They are talking about opening the "Old road" Chesterfield to Sheffield, up to passengers again, and opening the stations. Great video!!

    One of my old stamping grounds 😉 I’m from Woodhouse and my parents still live there. In normal times I’m over via train every 2 weeks. Signed it as a conductor and Senior conductor, ( Chesterfield to Sheffield both ways) As a Kid my Maternal Grandmother lived at Darnall as did most of my Mothers Aunts and Uncles. My Great uncles George and Harry were both Shunters One at Deepcar the other at West Tinsley.

    Wonderful video, as always, Rail... I love this stuff. I am over here in Maine, looking up places, seeing what’s around, not bothering about the audio because I am old and the locos all sound the same, an irritating drone. Happy New Year, be safe and we’ll, keep us entertained!

    I noticed that the signal at 22:55 did not appear to indicate the cross over to the up down Stocksbridge line. Perhaps I have misunderstood this signal but I did not see another junction to the right in that vicinity.

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  4 года назад +2

      Hi. if you look on a larger screen at 22:44 in the shadow of the bridge you can just see it. The position of the sun in the lens of the camera makes it very difficult to see.

      @chrishartley1210 4 года назад +1

      Wow, I assume that's easier to see in real life than it is on camera.

    Lovely watch. Just makes me sad that the once great woodhead has been reduced to a single, overgrown freight line.

    Hello. I love your videos! One question please: when you map the route at the start of your videos, can you give the legend between the tracks in green, orange, yellow, etc. ? Thank you in advance :)

    One of your best so far - although they’re all good. Even down here in Aussie, I think you have a following. Interesting video this - do I spy abandoned overhead catenary relics still attached to some of the bridges?

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  4 года назад +4

      Yes you do. It was a through route to Manchester that was electrified at 1500v DC.

    I've lived in Sheffield for 6 years and used to go under Wicker Arches twice a day every day at all times of day and night........and I've never seen a train go over. Are any trains still using this line? I know the Don Valley Railway people are trying to get it used for passenger services to Stocksbridge, but with Covid there's minimal chance of anything happening for years. Just don't want the line ripped up as it'll be impossible to reinstate it later.

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  4 года назад +1

      Yes there is a night freight trip up to the steel works at Stocksbridge.

  • @Mortimer50145

    It's a great shame that the camera technology wasn't small and cheap enough for someone to film the entire route either before 1970 when there were passenger trains, or at least before the 1980s when even the freight (coal?) traffic ceased. I can remember us driving from Wakefield to Cheshire (Marple area, IIRC) some time in the 1970s and we stopped at the eastern portal of Woodhead Tunnel to watch the long coal trains with their unusually high pantographs going into and out of the tunnel. No more :-(
    I'm surprised that the section between Stocksbridge and Penistone was closed because I'd have thought it would make a shorter route from Huddersfield to Sheffield than the one via Barnsley. Shame the line isn't reopened to passengers (maybe as a tram service) to serve the nroth western suburbs of Sheffield.
    Is it just my computer, or does the video play jerky? If I download it and single-step through it, it looks as if every 5th frame is repeated. Maybe RUclips has done this in a mistaken attempt to convert what I presume is 25 fps to the 30 fps that YT claims it to be.

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  4 года назад +2

      Not sure about that. it may be a bandwidth issue as it is uploaded at 1080 60fps. So may be a you tube / bandwidth issue.

    • @johnm2012
      @johnm2012 3 года назад

      RUclips has some film footage of the Woodhead line in the early 1960s, both on train and trackside, if you search for it.

    Has that single track always run through the old Victoria station? Was it not lifted for a while? When I lived in Sheffield, which I did off and on between 1983 and 1997, I thought I'd gone up to investigate the site and found just gravel beds there? In fact the climatic scene in my great but as yet unpublished novel is set on the track bed about 1/2 mile north of the old station!

      Not its always been there it served Wadsley bridge station for Hillsborough and the Stocksbridge steel works.
