Interesting to note that the Victorian stonework and brickwork is still in such good shape!
Yeah all in tip top condition
And will probably last a lot longer than the way we build these days too.
I'm guessing some of the brickwork along the way is is probably pre Victorian
The large stone slab underwater floor will last another 500yrs.

No seriously though how interesting, respect to the late Victorian engineers and the men who built structures like this .
I often use platform 5A and wondered why there were wooden trapdoor style pieces in the floor. Thought they were good old cellar entrances lol. Knew a lot of the sheaf and stuff are under ground but I never knew they went straight under the train station - cool to see what’s under there!

Apparently under Lime Street Station in Liverpool there are vast tunnels like this too!!

the ones in hull are the remains of the old gaol before it was moved and the original site turned into our current train station

I am a from Sheffield but I didn't know about these tunnels. Sheffield is full of rivers and canals though and I still have quite spooky dreams of being next to a river with lots of discarded items in it. It must be due to peering over old walls to look at the rivers in the city centre and seeing trolleys, bicycles and tyres!
I've been many times to Sheffield Midland station when I worked on the railway, but I never dreamt that there was the river underneath, and all that assortment of tunnels and bridges going quite some way. That Megatron is completely stunning in size. The amount of building materials must have been colossal in the construction. It must have been quite difficult to fit Sheffield Midland station in amongst the city buildings at the time of its construction, only the original line of the North Midland railway from Derby to Leeds was much earlier and went via the east of the city. Very well filmed, Darren, and many thanks for this showing.

Ha! A dry summer. I remember when we used to have those.
And to think outside of Lego we can’t seem to build anything of a decent standard nowadays even with the technology and tools at our hands. Great video buddy cheers

I used to commute to Sheffield to work . Been through the Midland station many times . Never knew all that was beneath my feet . Thank you for taking me with you on this subterranean journey . Thoroughly enjoyed it .

I think it was a Martin Zero video I watched and commented about the entrance where the Sheaf went underground. I used to regularly visit Sheaf House 8 storey office block to maintain the boilers located in a sub-basement. The river went underground via a trash screen with an automated scraper. One school holiday period kids were playing on the trash screen and someone switched off the scraper in case it injured one of the kids. Problem was he forgot to switch it back on again. Heavy rainfall followed and the screen blocked with trash. The water level rose so the station was flooded along with the boiler house in the sub basement of sheaf house.

MEGATRON !!! been down myself couple years ago. I wonder who gave it the name Megatron. The water level was quite high when i went down so cool to see it with a little less water.

Lived in Sheffield all my life and fancied the megatron walk each summer but never got around to it. having watched this I don’t think I could do it after all thank you for the virtual tour!

on here ( tube ) there's a video of a guy in a dingy who paddled right down to the Don junction, used a big rock as an anchor to stop being swept away.... looked a bit odd carrying this inflatable through the streets though !

Really enjoyed that Darren, Sheffield really does have some beautiful hidden gems. I've thought of doing the megatron tour myself and this has now made my mind up. Might wait till next year now though once the weather warms up lol. Looking forward to more videos from the fantastic Steel City

Those arches remind me of when me and the wife went to see a once in a lifetime chance to go inside an old underground reservoir near Chorley, I think it was 2014/15
They were capping it off for good (new houses going on top 😢)
We got a brochure from it and some amazing photos, and memories
It was “back lane at whittle le woods)
It was huge and the brick arches inside were so ornate.

I worked at Sheffield for 2 years. It was great. Some good restaurants and pretty city overall. I saw you walking at the station and it brought me many memories. I never went underneath. It was enjoyable to watch your video.

Last time I went to Sheffield was in may for a few beers at kelham island.. never knew about these tunnels under station .. mind u the train from Castleford passes alot of tunnels approaching Sheffield train station 👍

Very cool. Surprised at the lack of graffiti. I always take a hard hat for tunnels, mines, etc. Makes it so much easier not having to crouch down so low, because a bump on the head from the stonework no longer matters....

there is a underground canal that runs under Doncaster railway station if anyone new about there is a way of getting in through a tunnel near the river

Great video, fascinating underground infrastructure. As a water engineer I often see it on a map, but never in the flesh. Explorers see more of the tunnels than most of us do, unless lucky enough to tag along on a confined space expedition (with a damn sight more onerous H+S and a two day course...). I do believe, from a recent visit to the Blonk Street flats for the snooker, that the last few hundred metres of the culvert are to be de-culverted as part of a regeneration scheme for the horrible old 50s/60s derelicts at Castlegate Park. This video will then become an interesting retrospective!

amazing our family were all from sheffield , we moved up to the north east of england just before i was born in 72,only remember redgates toystore and the market and an aunts house, my mum was chatted up by joe cocker in a bar and she turned him down lol one day hope to return to sheffield

Wow I didn't ever expect you to come to Sheffield, you should have a look at Sheffield's old town hall across from Sheffield castle market and Sheffield castle in the old Haymarket and exchange lots of history in the city, Sheffield is the 4th largest city in England.

You get yourself in some tight spaces Darren. Thought it was up Martin zero places to be. Then saw a brief picture of him at the end of yr vlog.Its Like a maze. Have to be careful you dont get lost depending on your route, or may not find yr way back. Very fascinating and historic, whats underneath the towns. A lot more cities and towns should open there's up, to guided walks. 5 * as always. Fab fab

Darren, that was a large group of explores. The maps on the left of the screen were great. Did I see Martin, James and Marcus?? The stonework is amazing, all the man hours it must have taken. The drain at 8:42, maybe that came from the Ladies and Gents train station toilets at one time. Looks like a real fun day you all had.....
Proper workmanship knowing it may never be seen but the crafted it as if it would be on show overground 👌🏼👌🏼
Thankfully it didn't smell like there was any raw sewerage coming into the tunnels.
