So much of San Diego has always been hills and canyons. But over many decades they have filled in different canyons to build apartments and other buildings on. I'm sure it hasn't helped. Canyons were naturally made to allow huge amounts of water to move quickly.
@@Repent-and-believe-in-Jesus1 No Thank you. Christians try to put me through the "end of the world" every 3 or 4 months...get a grip. Yes, ones morality and ethics should always be revisited and make the appropriate changes the best we can...Christian FEARMONGERING is on the way out. More rational thought will keep us out of all the CHRISTIAN BLOOD thirst in the middle east. Instead the USA can be a force for goodness.
Is that right? How long have you lived in San Diego?
@@zukipower9960 Several other comments on other San Diego videos said the same thing. I used to hike in a canyon in Lake Side, where my great Aunt lived in a small trailer. Once I was grown, it was filled in and apartments are there now. My family lived/lives in San Diego also, 2 and 3 generations. I grew up in Escondido later on. Anyway, my cousin said that particular area flooded also. My dad used to hunt squirrels and rabbits all over North Park area as a kid. And said in the 70's a number of small canyons he used to hunt in were filled. I guess you would have to look at old maps and compare them to now. But yes, canyons and low areas have been filled in. I'm not talking about areas of thousands of feet in width. But several hundred feet wide. like very deep washes. And maybe 50 or more feet deep. Easy to fill with old vehicles, large concrete from demolished building etc. Then soil on top and packed down.
That doesn't matter. What is your angle in this? are you suggesting building those apartments is the main cause? Because a logical person would understand those apartments are needed and what was lacking was a proper drainage system. I got news for ya. Canyon or not ANY place is phucked without a proper drainage system.
That was yesterday and it was catastrophic. Today the rain has stopped but the residents of the 42nd street will never recover. The river that runs behind the neighborhood!!!!!
Don't build homes next to a river!!!!
was it really that bad there???
Will never recover??? Yes they will.
42nd and what?
Bruh never recover how plain stupid can you be? Look at Florida after Hillary. You’re a joke
San Diego is built wrong, I’m not from here but I live here. What I think the problem is, is that city hasn’t invested in the right drainage for these areas. Low “in the valley type areas” such as Encanto should have way better systems than they do. As much as rent is to live here.
I grew up there (born 1957) lived there until 1990. You're right, people have built without taking into account where water flows, and without proper drainage. They believe that because it is dry most of the time, that it will always be that way. NOPE. Rain falls and it needs somewhere to go. My sister still lives there, fortunately on a hill.
This might now force them to address the issue since it’s getting national coverage. Not a coincidence that those areas are working class low income areas.
@@brandoa330developers will help those people out. Then build more luxury apartments.
Instead of fixing city issues the news calls it a "1000 year storm". California in a nutshell.
@@avfb6474that makes perfect sense. It’s not the news’ job to fix issues, just report them.
This is devastating for so many people.
64 to be exact.
It's overkill. It's like one neighborhood. ROFL.
JesusCristo is coming for a second time, prepared yourself.
Seek the lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts ; let them return to their Lord , that He may have mercy on them, and to our God, for Him will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:,6 -7.
Just horrific!!! 🙏🙏🙏...
Hoping all will be alright. So sad to see this.
Horrific but expected.
Oh how sad….. sending hope and prayers from Maine❤
I experianced this in national city a few years ago, sudden flash flood. It happens every few years all over San Diego.
Gavin: "We're in a permanent drought"
San Diego: "Hold my beer"
Oh you know there will be another drought next year
God protect everyone in San Diego ✨🕊
It’s impossible to put words to it. A prayer will have to do. No one deserves this. No one.

Just amazing !
This is really heartbreaking. San Diego is one of my favorite cities..
Yes - one of the best cities 💔
Oh so sad I pray for safety, and shelter for each and every person. God bless!!!
As well as their pets and wildlife.
Your god did nothing to stop this and will do nothing to help the city recover

Just vote, "Yes" on new sewage and drainage systems when it comes up.
@@sandyago4735 Well your government in California will do nothing also to stop this in spite of every climate change bs they throw at you either, so now youre even.
Never thought it would be this bad! But woww
Very few areas were affected, but this is still sad. This is odd this even happened. I've lived here my whole 45 years and we've never experienced anything like this.
It’s a sign of the times. It’s happening all over. 😢
And Probably will start to happen again in more places than that sadly.
Yes I grew up In SD and so did my parents. I never heard of something like that. My mom used to talk of a flood that swept through our old neighborhood near El Cajon before I was born. So I guess there have been flooding before but decades ago. Definitely not common.
S*** changes.
Climate change is real people
Thanks for providing the locations.
This is why you need a flood insurance, as well as earthquake. I live in SD and have both.
You are absolutely correct 💯, but some states like Florida we have flood insurance but when it happens the floods the cancellation policies kicks in. So many people were stuck out last year during hurricane 🌀 season 😞. Let's keep everyone in the world 🌍 in prayer 🤲
Flood insurance doesn't cover hurricanes or rising water.
Not for long!
Yes until it happens then the company drops 💧 you 😞
Insurance co use every excuse not to pay a claim. You don't know how good your insurance is til u got to use it.
Oh, dang! I wish they told us what part of San Diego was affected.
805 and 15/163 older areas of San Diego
Everywhere from San Ysidro to San Luis Obispo that there was no proper drainage. I do plumbing in San Diego :) What you are watching is the worst of the worst. And this rainfall is the worst I've seen in a very long time. It happens from time to time and it's always the coastal areas, mountains and valleys the get hit the most.
@@zukipower9960 I’m from Glendale/Pasadena area, so I’m all too familiar. Live in Fresno flat land now. So different. Thanks for the info. I have lots of family in North County, couldn’t reach some of them. All are well….. thanks for responding!
@@jodyhoo One of the best places on earth for climate. I used to stay with a friend when I visited Pasadena. I can't forget the thousands of wild green parrots that loudly visited all the tree tops.
It was year 2006 or 2007, i lost my dream car that I bought 2 months prior to a flashflood in Del Mar. Dont live in SD anymore but I feel for all those people :(

All American cities clearly aren’t ready for more of these atmospheric rivers but we better start getting Army Corp Engineers to relook at areas at risk for inundation. No place is gonna go unscathed 🤷🏼♀️
Can't afford it. Would require massive federal funding which won't be allocated for it. Too many wars going on, government needs that money for the military. Gotta top 1 trillion for military budget by 2030 😂
Terrible, this horrible situation, particularly in such a beautiful City, which I was fortunate enough to visit in 1999 and again, in 2012. The fist time was a business trip, the second was a vacation visit of several days. Great, the people!🇺🇸

So it never rains in Southern California.....

Omg
it all happened because they didn't clean out the gutter system here in the south. Poway cleaned out their gutter system a whole month ago with dozers in anticipation of changing weather conditions. its almost like it was planned. i remember watching them take down all the vegetation cluttering their water ways off Poway rd and community rd water was able to flow freely and no flood damage occurred there
Same with Oceanside. They had guys all over the city checking the drains while it was raining.
.... be aware of a surge in used car sales.....😮
Last year on February there was an unexpected snow storm or blizzard in San Diego. I was there staying at a resort in Coronoda. The day after I left the blizzard happened. Never happened before. Weird!
It snowed in SoCal, weird it happened
It is Coronado and has never snowed there. It is coastal. we only get snow in our mountain areas to the east.
thats terrible 😮
I pray for all of them.
From fire to flooding 😮
this flood is devastating!!

It’s awful. How did city and government officials failed us.
Keep the debris out of waterways and drains!
That's part of the problem.of urbanization. Large parking lots etc. Funnel all that water into one place very fast.
@@bobbykiefer4306 So true. Ponds and streams give extra water a place to go instead of turning the highways into lakes and rivers.
Drainages were probably full of homeless camps 🏕
Unexpected? The forecast was warning for days now.
so scary! I was just there in December.

IMO - Laying down asphalt, house concrete pads, new roadways, sidewalks, and overpasses contribute to the problem. It is not only Mother Nature's fault. People tend to be naive about some of the causes.

It is time to design houses differently. They need be sitting on massive structural columns with parking and utilities below and living, kitchen, dining above and bedrooms above that.
Why such massive structures in San Diego? People can live outside the weather is so nice.

People saying this is why you need flood insurance. Keep in mind that most insurance companies here have pulled back coverage or no longer provide coverage.
It’s not even worth it to have flood insurance in NEW* Jersey. In particular, the Jersey shore, or any of the coastal areas of New Jersey. Most people could not afford flood insurance, or they were not going to be covered due to “special, stipulations” and it’s crazy because you can have a little tiny shack, that’s worth $3 million and won’t be able to afford flood insurance. Flood insurance got so expensive after hurricane Sandy that most people rebuilt without insurance, it was cheaper. That says a lot! Praying for everyone in San Diego. This is so sad and even though I’ve never been, I always thought that the weather in San Diego was sunny” perfect“
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
