I live right next to this flood channel. It has been neglected for so long that there are trees 30 feet high growing in it. This is a concrete flood channel with a 5 foot layer of dirt on top full of vegetation.
That's just ridiculous, California is so fast about taking your money any way possible but when it comes to simple sh&t they barely maintain the cities!
This "mayor" is in over his head; he is incapable and does not have the staff to deal with these problems. But, he has a great relationship with the SD bicycle community.
I hope a sharp attorney offers to represent these people pro bono and together they sue the heck out of the city and the state for millions in damages for not maintaining those flood channels.

I almost have to laugh. When I worked southeast SD, I use to try and attack the homeless population that lived in and near the canal. Instead of writing them tickets for illegal lodging, I would make a deal with them to clean up around the area and place the garbage in bags and next to the curb to be collected. But, every week, furniture would be dropped off in the canal. Even though the homeless population would drag it next to a curb, the city and trash collectors would not pick it up or the residents would throw it back into the canal. Later, I was ordered by the division captain, to stop it. So, yes, part of the problem is the city, but it is also with some of the residents too. When I lived there, the city could not even maintain a decent roadway. When it did rain the 3 or 4 days a year (not as much as rained in that few hours either), there were several areas that chronically flooded with a small amount of rain. The federal government is not going to help, because they are to busy giving money to Ukraine. The state is not going to help, because they are to busy giving money to illegals. The city is not going to help, because they are broke and have not done anything for decades. All three will be big in promises, but short in delivery.
Do you realize that can can months if not years, or it may not even come at all. The federal government will only act if it was a CAT 4 or 5 Hurricane type damage in THE WHOLE CITY. This is just a couple neighborhood that should have had flood insurance.
This should motivate Sacramento to exempt flood water channel maintenance from any environmental review. Someone forgot that those channels are not for bird watching but for disposal of destructive FLOOD WATERS. The technology and expertise is there why don't we use it and prevent all the pain these people are experiencing?

The cause of the damage was not just the storm itself, it was the lack of proper maintenance of storm drains. Therefore, the city should be held liable for the damage to the homes. Had the drains been maintenance the homes would be fine. We have incompentant city leaders. Its time for conservative leadership before SD turned into a total disaster.
Clearly, the problem of weed-choked channels must be solved by the State of California, if not Congress. If the channels can't be maintained without violating state and federal laws, we'll need to clear out housing and build levees along these streams. Three inches of rain can fall anywhere in California on one day and the flooded homes are well within urban San Diego.

friend of mine has a family house on the lowest patch of southcrest. a part of the problem is the growth and trash in the drainage channels. the main problem is an undersized drain. his house has flooded several times over the years. in 1978 water came in the house 9" 2019 again 9" in the house. this time 2024, 5' deep in the house. two more times water came up to the top porch step. and every few years 6” on the driveway. back when he was doing the 2019 clean up. a city guy came around and said the issue was a water drain that is 9" but needs to be 16". there were red flags all over this disaster. my friends house should have been the canary in the coal mine. when only one house floods, no big urge to fix the drain. when. birch. beta. boston. 42nd and una all flood. now it will get fixed.

Most insurances wont cover. Its a special insurance they need called flood insurance. Many didnt have it.

Think about it....car repos are through the roof, cars are unffordable, interest rates are super high that's why car AND house sales are down, inflation is still a BIG PROBLEM hurting all of us, layoffs are happening in so many job sectors right noe specially the tech, border crisis, natural disaster crisis in the East Coast, War in the middle east getting worse by the day, and in case you're not aware there's a new virus that might cause lockdowns again and there's a possible blackout due our outed power grid that might happen this summer with extreme hot weather conditons. You can decide to ignore everything or prepare accordingly. God bless everyone and hope everyone prepares.
