- City leaders say they were prepared for the rain storm, but could not have possibly predicted an unprecedented act of nature. But months ago, city leaders did predict this level of devastation, in on-camera interviews with NBC 7 Investigates. Last summer, engineers took us inside the city’s deteriorating stormwater system.

The SD mayor is FULL OF BS!
All mayors usually are.
And, it is overflowing. 🙁
@@jackyflowers3493 The upcoming rain is going to be Todd's "Hurricane Katrina" moment. This mayor is NOT competent nor capable of dealing with disasters in that he blames everyone/everything else. He will continue to deal with such calamities NOT in a timely and efficient way.
Every Mayor has been a joke.
@@IAmWithinEverything Concur and we were the ones that elected them.
I left San Diego 2 decades ago but went back for a family emergency in 2018. I originally left because I wanted to "see the grass on the other side". It was "Americas Finest City". A very beautiful, forward moving conservative, modern, clean and well governed city. From San Ysidro to Oceanside and all points east, northeast. But, what I saw upon arrival was a city that was almost unrecgonizable and not in a good way. It was dirty, litter everywhere on the sides of the main roads and highways, segregated neighborhoods on a massive scale, nasty beaches, homelessness on steroids and just utter neglect. From San Ysidro to Oceanside to Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla, Vista, El Cajon, Santee, Clairemont, Loma Linda, Point Loma, etc........I mean everywhere I went my heart was breaking with what I saw. It was all this side of third world. Even the wealthy areas all along the coast, Carlsbad, DelMar, etc. were showing signs of neglect. I stayed there for a very difficult year, but couldn't leave fast enough once all was handled. Will never step foot in Cali again. Corrupted. May God have mercy on us.
Segregated areas? 😂😂😂😂
Most of what u said is correct but idk what segregated areas ur talking about. People naturally live with people like them but it isn't segregated on purpose. My neighborhood has people of every ethnicity and like 5 diff churches Catholic, Christian, Greek, Islamic, Jewish. We r not segregated. That is just laughable.
I was born in Orange County, Ca., when there were actual orange trees! I left in 1987, as it was deteriorating very rapidly. I am saddened that my childhood home(meaning Ca.)is now unrecognizable. Once a state to be proud of, now a laughing stock. I will never go back. 😢☹😔
@@Gfysimpletons I think she meant the poor, middle class and rich, not race.
racial segregation does not occur *naturally* . there is such a thing as housing discrimination. otherwise, beach communities, desirable areas would not be pretty much entirely white. stop gaslighting
Politicians are never held accountable because they're never around after the s*** hits the fan.
POLITICIANS NEVER LIE
REMEMBER THEY WANTED TO SPEND 100 MILLION ON A FEW RESTAURANTS AND A BIKE PATH IN THE SAN DIEGO RIVER !
😂😂😂😂 just last year !😂😂😂😂
They just do not use money where it really matters. Very, very sad for these people,😫😔 such a disheartening situation. Stay strong San Diegans, stay strong! 💪👊
they spent 400 million on bike lanes a while back...
Pump stations should have emergency backup power.
ABSOLUTELY!!!
ABSOLUTELY!!!
ABSOLUTELY!!!
Thank you NBC 7 - I think this is a great video for people to understand San Diego is a METROPOLIS and not a run of the mill like it's PLUMBING - GOD BLESS THE GYM OWNER
The guy asks, "Where's the money going?" Great question. I wonder. There is a lot of people paying taxes. Any ideas? I noticed there are migrant relief stations built on the Iris Trolley. Many dollars go to many things. Please help our citizens of San Diego first.
Don’t get federal, state, and local funding mixed up. The funds to fix our roads is local.
all the tax money is going to obscene six figure pensions and salaries for useless bureaucrats, some firefighters retire with pensions in the several hundred thousand dollars per year
@BumSheep Bingo! It goes all the way back to the Susan Golding years.
Migrants too
@@Karlatennis So he is responsible for repairing Storm drains? So this poor people don't need to live in fear everytime it rains.
Months before? 😂 Anyone walking the streets of San Diego the last decade can clearly see the storm infrastructure is terrible. Anyone living here knows how water constantly backs up. Curb inlets are non existent in one area and large enough to fit the front end of a Mini Cooper the next.
City: We could save and be open about our failing infrastructure, no lets just keep the public happy by building new bike lanes :) and have the next Mayor deal with the trash we left them :)
Newson: Let it burn, so I can make more affordable housing, for my Utopia of a State
What is not being addressed is that you have more runoff from the surrounding area. With new development comes more runoff, more areas are being developed and concreted over, all that newer development is going into an aging infrastructure that was designed when the streets were built(and some of it incorrectly) The City for its part, seldom does capital improvements to Storm Drains because of the cost. The City has the data and records to back up what I'm saying. 7/39 needs to do an indepth look at that and pull that information. I'll give you a hint here 7/39 some parts of Pacific Highway once belonged to the State of Calif. until they decided to give it to the City of San Diego. It was a move to save the state of California from maintaining those sections of Highways.
this has been planned. its an easy way to remove renters, get ones to move out of the area. all apart of an agenda. dont be fooled. next year, the homes will be sold and Blackstone group will be buying many if not all the properties available. look into Blackstone. apart of an agenda to control property; monopoly.
and then once Blackstone owns the properties, they raise the prices on rent/price to own.
T. Gloria has nver had a real job. He doesn't know what it takes to run a small business, let alone an entire city. He should never had been mayor of the 8th largest city in the U.S., he's a more-on! He's gotta go!!!
He should resign, it's obvious can't do his job. the issue is beyond him, storm drain system is probably about 100 years old
But he's the first gay colored person.
he's been a total disaster
God forbid we have an earthquake under this mayor. You take the reign of the city, it’s mandatory you make sure all the city departments are up and running, and prepared for anything. Gloria, obviously, dropped the ball.
This flooding event is a political black eye he will never recover from. Please, you the reader, don’t run for office to push your personal agenda.
Run to serve!
Is he a Democrat? If so you are done.
They’re busy making stupid bike lanes lol
it was gross how he was more interested in spin then helping people .
I'm not sure if you guys are aware but there's MORE EXTREME RAINY DAYS COMING STARTING THIS THURSDAY!!
Yeah ikr
They say like 65-70% prediction of big, However please everyone do the due diligence and read up on it, you can have rain from the last storm, but this storm has some big gusts of wind, so be prepared for power outages. Make sure you got flashlights, all the necessities.. etc.. If your area is prone to flooding, prepare, now this isn't a super cyclone, however California after the drought still hasn't prepared for big storms, just like last year with some impressive rain and wind.. this storm has that wind tied into it... just follow closely.
yes, they might be screwed
The Mayor just ordered an evacuation to all those people without funding or help, but he wants everyone to leave. He thinks money grows on trees where people can just relocate without any financial burden@@sarahbaartmansrevenge
OH BOY.......MORE RAIN ! ! !
Mother Nature is beyond pissed off
Nature something that should never be controlled but here we are damning up rivers and charging folks for food and water
Mother Nature does not exist, climate exists. Dumb humans who don’t know how to use resources efficiently exist.
And she's laughing at that Mayor's hairline receding everytime he lies.
Smiling’ Todd Gloria prioritized his “sexy streets” and significantly underused bike lanes over storm drains and infrastructure. If the storm of Jan. 22 had produced more than three hours of heavy rain, we’d be dealing with even more devastation and loss of life. Extreme weather will become the norm. It’s a huge problem requiring huge funding. Todd’s deflecting blame to Mother Nature puts us all in peril. Accept the responsibility and get it done.
The guy is an idiot. They just put in bike lanes on my street that I haven't seen anyone use in the 2 months it's been there. I've seen 1 scooter using it. At one end where the bike lane ends is a high car traffic area and at the other end is a narrow street going up a steep hill that no one will ride up or down.
This is what happens when a woke mayor leads the way.. Use tax payer dollars for you know what and forget the rest. Keep voting the way you do and don't be surprised when you end with the same results. Did Todd not learn anything from Kevin Faulconer? MAGA2024
Need a new bike lane, we’re on it!
I was in Oceanside. There were trucks everywhere making sure the drains were open.
Reactive not proactive.
Do most people know what “making sure” is??? It means they’re using their eyes…. & not on their hands & knees. It’s all visual inspection.
Does anyone else see that America is in decline? I guess this is just another unfortunate event, in a Series of Unfortunate Events.
Wow I never realized that just from 1 pump station it show you how important things are to keep every day life going
Unacceptable response
It looks like San Diego and Albuquerque NM have something in common: old plumbing under the streets. But in Albuquerque, when I lived there, water mains would just explode from simple age factors. I would drive around and see patches of street repairs where pipes have burst, and ripped out a section of the street. They don't replace the pipes, they just fix the leak or failed section of pipe. On a street called "San Mateo" which is where I saw a pipe burst, the repair dude told me the water mains under that street, "are between 50-60 years old". His words. But the only bright spot in Albuquerque is streets only flood if they get a Monsoon rain storm in the Summer. With the Arroyo system they have, and downhill nature of the city, that water runs off fairly quickly into an even larger Arroyo (drainage) channel along I-25 that goes into Rio Grande river.
We got that in Hawaii recently and had no issues. We don’t have enough storm water drains but we do have a lot less concrete
I'm so sorry😢 I Pray the City compensate the loss!
How about not giving all our tax money to immigrants. This sounds bad because people all need help. But this tax money we work so hard for does not help the working people. Sad story.
Or maybe city government shouldn't Grant themselves lavish pension benefits. That's where a lot of the money goes.
@@scottprather5645 You mean like retired bus drivers making $100,000?
Nobody is “giving all your money to immigrants” and you can’t reasonably expect people to take you seriously with such overly dramatic rhetoric.
@@magesalmanac6424 these people listen to all the propaganda on Fox News and other sources they have no idea what's really going on.
They just mindlessly repeat what they hear.
City never cleared out the drainage system because they never thought it would be a biblical rain 🤨
3 inches of rain isn’t biblical 😂
So it's Jesus fault ? 😢
It’s not always just the amount that matters, it’s how quickly that amount falls in a given time.
Cause city and county workers are lazy and do the least to get by.
God flood the Earth. 💪🏽
Lazy city officials and liars
It goes decades back with things not being done.
@@DigitalMediaWorldUSA The mindset of: the next guy will be the bad guy in saying"we need to cut programs, to better the infrastructure" the cycle always happens.. they talk lies for votes, and do nothing just for the $. We go every day without realizing how important infrastructure is, its part of the City to handle that, like sewage, people just flush and it goes.. they don't think where it goes and how its being transported whether its out to sea or a treatment plant.. those veins are 60+ years old... they need to be replaced.. This isn't just San Diego this is USA infrastructure as a whole.
I lived there for 35 years. The roads are horrible driving around San Diego and Hillcrest. They only replace water pipes and water mains when there’s a problem.
Sue the city for damages.
Too many expenses, too many salaries,Too many Cars,Too many New Stuff that's not needed just for a City that can't fix an Electrical problem and a pumping problem.Heads going to Roll...No more new cars for the City,No more new promotions with raises.Salaries are going to be Cut.
That was not mother nature . That was blocked drains . Period. Who wins
OMG San Diego is flooded over?! That's horrible I hope that they can at least dry out from the flooded streets.
When tax money is for personal expences
Sounds like naturally, Mother Nature wants her land back.
Man made efforts to live where one shouldn’t - I alone would relocate.
Can’t imagine the insurance costs.
None of us alive says the Mayor but the biz owner saw the same last year. What an insult.
This is what happens when all your money goes to police, while all the other departments at City Hall/County are severely underfunded. People love to complain as to why politicians never put money where it counts and do not understand how cities/counties work. Look at the city budget folks, no money for stormwater, public works, or planning. The departments, that when well funded, can prevent these things through investing in infrastructure and zoning. All our money goes into police overtime, at the cost of crucial services. If we do not understand that police unions fully control all of our cities and their budgets, then we are doomed to prevent the flooding/fires that are to come. Police have never been underfunded since the Reagan era. We have never seen what a city with well funded departments look like. Remember folks a city is also public works, planning, stormwater, water departments, parks and rec, economic dev, fire, etc. They all need to be fully funded.
WHY RAISE TAXES WHEN THEY HAVEN'T EXPLAINED WHAT THE MONEY THEY DO HAVE IS SPENT ON AND WHY THEY ARE NOT FIXING BASICS SERVICES LIKE ROADS AND SEWERS AND STORM DRAINS ?
WE NEED AN AUDIT OF THE CITY AND COUNTY AGENCIES !😊😊😊😊
Thank you!!! You're over the target!!!
Another big storm coming either Wednesday or Thursday, so you might have to do this clean up all over again. Good Luck.
I feel bad for him...he was on the brink of tears and it didnt seem it was just a money thing. All the savings. I hope he realizes that things could be worse.
Thsnk you for real reporting instead of being the state's talking head.🧡
When they say El Niño or La Niña one or the other end of California could gear up. Departments can work together.
Mother Nature got mad and instead of the twins, El Nino and La Nina, she is now sending her sister Tia Gorda to teach us humans our manners.
Let’s borrow some money from the DEI budget.
SO BASICALLY THE MAYOR IS SAYING WE NEED TO PREPARE, SO ALL SOCIAL PROGRAMS ARE CANCELED FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS !
WE CAN HIT THE ROAD REPAIR AND PUT VIDEO CAMERAS W SOUND IN ALL GOVERNMENT OFFICES? 😂😂😂😂
I think body cams should be mando for elected offices.
Law suits ensue…
0:03 Was that on Mission Boulevard in PB? I used to work near there...
Avoid low lying areas with climate changes. Even if they had the right pumping stations, it could fail in a event of a power outage.
Make sure you call the city of San Diego before watering your lawn. Don't want to hear complaints!
Het ready san Diego.. gonna be another rough weekend
Always blame it on someone or something else. Where the heck is accountability?
Sue the city folks for damages 🎉😮
An independent audit of the city’s finances need to take place immediately. There’s no excuse for not having the funds to clean the storm channels and replace these storm pumps. San Diego gets these storms every year in January and February. This is nothing new. There’s no excuse for such incompetence!
Pineapple express incoming
MORE RAIN THIS WK.
YIKES
Where’s all the $ going? Taxes?
But Newsum will say it's climate change not infrastructure
It might happen again. On thrus.. be on the ready and it is pretty normal to see that type backup. Be on the ready and stay safe. We will get thru this , safely.
A mandatory tax on the Richest San Diego residents. They can afford it. For every $100K income, $100 tax for Infrastructure.
Lol all he needed to do is maintain infrastructure yet he thinks more about Tijuana
Wait till next week.....more rain on way
I know!!! Can't wait!!!🥳🌧🌧🌧🌦
Not just rain... this one is packing heavy wind too.
all the tax money is going to obscene six figure pensions and salaries for useless bureaucrats, some firefighters drive Bentleys and they work six months per year
I called this as soon as i saw the amount of flooding
I am shocked! 😉
Where's the backup generators
busted
SF is fucked and now SD is fucked...is LA safe or are we next?
Does this sound like the watch mojo chick or is it just me😂
2inch an hour aint nothing. I live in Arkansas and an it rains that minimum.
FYI I'm downhill from neighbors an back smoking room sits 6inches below ground, anytime it rains 4inches a hour I be using the shop vac sucking up water, of course neighbors don't have gutters so it may also contribute, had problem since year 2000. Its getting old for me tbh so I feel the weight lifter business owner
Someone is taking lots of money! ask for your receipts from local stores, restaurants, exc. we all get taxed differently in EACH San Diego County we are spending our money in.. not to mention our gas prices 😮
When they forecast the weather they also forecast the flooding. Then instead of getting a rake and clearing the storm drain they just report it.
Its not always old infrastructure. Fwy 78 by College was just repaired last summer. And it was flooded last week. Brand new fwy culverts flooded. Cal trans sucks.
The city said this storm was a once in a 1000 year storm. Bunch of excuses. No one in the city cleans the storm drains until last week when they the homeowners plan to sue the city for not doing their job.
THEY BETTER MOVE ALL WEEK FIXING BEFORE THE WATE DILUGE THAT STARTS THIS THURSDAY
Ask the governor, president..
I agree the city should have done more, but as a Mexican I will remain quiet regarding securing the Southern border!
San Diego not equipped for anything especially SOUL Music.
That is funny asking the question “where is the money going”, there is money but they just don’t know how to handle it, these officials are incompetent!
I love how the people who claim climate change isn't real say crap like, "it was a thousand-year storm." No it going to keep getting worse.
I work down there and it sucks when it rains. Especially, Midway in lighter rain it floods badly! Wish they would use their money much wiser. A few years ago they fix and pave Midway and a week later they tore it up. They kept fixing and tering it for a couple more months. It was like no one communicated with each other of what to do with that street. And are bike lanes more important than the businesses and homes underwater? You could of used that money to FIX the pump system that you knew was deteriorating for 50 +years! Fix the bigger problem than put bandages on everything!
Another storm coming this Thursday.
Next week more rain storms all week.
The floodings would be a routine get used to it.
Poor Todd Gloria 😂😂😂
How about Fiscal Responsibility? As we already know the MORE money, we throw at it DOES Nothing! We demand an AUDIT of all agencies. PERIOD!
REDLINING LOCATION
When you repet something with the same results that's the definition of insanity.
Don't reopen!!!!
Hmmmm...? I think the "cost of doing nothing" is business-speak for "the longer fixing the storm water system gets put-off, the more profit it will generate for those local contractors sitting on city management councils, or their contractor friends. Sadly.
Todd Gloria is one of the worst mayors we ever had, and I can say that having living here in San Diego since 1958.
Good
Looking forward to this weekend, get some crates raise all ur stuff
There’s a point that needs to be made about small business owners…. They could had invested their time into getting a government state city or contract job….. but cry about taking their work drama home….
Is this a 3rd world state ,what is going on they need help ?❤❤😂
The money went all to the deep pockets
Corrupt
business insurance?
why SD does not have money? The city get so much money from the property taxes!
AHHHHH! Stop killing me Cain! Get these residential transformers you put in front of my house on both ways out of the property you put to explode and electrify flood waters and shock me until I drown in the water!
They should've been cleaning this problem instead of making all these bike lanes nobody is really using. Negligent! No excuses, all of the unnecessary spending on sexy streets and bike lanes, the money has been misused. misappropriated
Bike lanes were more important
They were sitting on their hands without doing anything. In 2023 there was flooding and no one did anything. They should have been alert .Invest in more pump stations which should have been done since 2023. Raise the taxes and get it done !
