I love your show, honestly it deserves to be on TV. I do have one question though, why do you always have a facial expression as if you don't like the food when in fact you do? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Although it's easy to sensationalize unconventional meat options, you have to respect the resourcefulness of people that have found alternate food sources when faced with scarcity. Historically, some of our strongest food cultures have developed because of it. Techniques like pickling, fementing and preserving are also products of similar conditions. Certain foods were only available seasonally, so methods of storing and preserving them were necessary for survival. I appreciate Sonny's open-mindedness and respectful approach on these food tours. He may not like everything he tries, but he gives it a chance (within reasonable boundaries like not eating endangered species). You picked a great co-host for this episode. He's a treat.

I absolutely love this one. I was one who was born in the Ban Vanai Refugee Camp. I bypass all the struggles my parents went through in Laos and their journey. This was a beautiful piece and allow me to peer into my parent's homeland. Laos is my husband's home country, he enjoys this episode so much. Reminds him of his childhood growing up in Laos.

This channel is so much more than food reviews... It's history, comedy, tolerance, religion, culture, family and so much more... Thank you for doing what you do 😊
Sonny, what you and your team do is beautiful, you really give the microphone to the locals you're guests of in an authentic, fun and enlightening way. What you did for Yai here in this film was beautiful, and the chemistry between you two was perfect and heartfelt! And you should be proud of your dad's consciousness. You're carrying on that spirit of peace in what you do today. I go through seasonal binges of the BEFRS, and it always feels like returning to an old friend's house, even though it's on a different continent every time! Congratualtins to you and your team for all your success, and good travels ahead!
Great video ! Yia’s quote “coming to a home I’ve never been to” hits differently. His story is so similar to so many. Props to the O.G Hmong folks who came to the U.S with no money and no grasp of the English language and not only survive but thrived. In one generation there’s hmong drs, lawyers, congresswomen, mayors, successful entrepreneurs. It is sad to see some of the next generation losing not just the culture but the language. I hope videos like this will inspire young hmong people to learn about their history, culture and language. As far as food goes, southeast Asian cuisine in my opinion is the best bar none. Hmong, Laos, Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian food is unmatched. Keep the awesome content coming !
As a long time fan of the channel, I have to say that the content gets better and better with every new country added to the mix; But there is a feature that I'd love to see added and which wouldn't take much time to implement, I'm referring to proper Subtitles and not the auto-generated ones. I'm positive that there are countless foreign viewers that will appreciate this little feature quite a bit. Hope you consider it, Keep up the good work Cheers
oh really? yep super easy you just have to sit through a million hours of footage and painstakingly translate everything into 1000 different languages then line everything up with each videos vocal audio.... your right wouldn't take much time at all... lol

@@damienwalker4399 It actually doesn't take that long. AI, there are so many caption apps, premiere pro has it built in. Edit: Also I am pretty sure they type their narration scripts and dont scribble them on wipes, so there you go you dont even have to sit and type much, just let AI do its trick and integrate the written script.
We’re all blind to the concept of simple human survival out here in the west. Much like the concept of luxury means something much different in the east. Such educational content!
Sonny, this channel's production quality truly rivals TV standards. It's a very humble and educational series, and Yia Vang's emotional storytelling about his family resonated deeply. Blessings to those who've experienced similar situations in this world.
I love learning about different cultures. I personally don't have it in me to try a vast majority of their food but the ingenuity of the complete utilization of everything is brilliant

I just stumbled on to these videos a few weeks back, I have enjoyed all that I have seen so far but this one is my favorite by far. The story of Loas is amazing by itself but seeing someone who was born here but left as a child be able to come back to where his roots are and experience what his parents and grandparents lived like is amazing, emotional, and special. Thank you!!!!!
I have had the honor and the pleasure of working with many fine people from Laos that talk about your homeland fondly. While I'm not unfamiliar, it was a pleasure to learn more about your peoples rich culinary history here.
Laos are the ancestral homeland of the East Asian and southeast Asian peoples according to hundreds of genetic DNA test results from major labs around the world. East Asian looking people living in Central Asia countries are mostly Lao and Mongolians descendants particularly in Uzbekistan they came from southern China during a Tang Dynasty.
It's amazing how these cultures adapt to what is available. I don't think it would be as easy for people in the west to do the same. Love that I can live vicariously through Sunny.
so impressive how they split sticks to use as a kebob style and also use those stick fibers as string! were so spoiled over here in the NA we can buy skewers and string for $2 and have enough to make 100. mad respect for Laos

Loatian cuisine is probably the rarest of all southeast Asian cuisines in the west. I have a few friends who are Lao and they’ve introduced me to the absolute BEST asian bowl of soup! Not pho, not ramen, not Lanzhou noodles, not tom yum, but KHAO POON! Kinda like a coconut based curried version of pho. Very spicy, but sooooo delicious delicious! And so hard to find unless you attempt to make it yourself. I accidentally came across it at a restaurant that was mainly Thai, but also had a Lao menu. Don’t you live happy accidents?

i'm so happy you think that way. 😊 if the restaurant was mainly thai but also had a lao menu including khao poon, chances are that the owners are most likely lao actually! it was one of my FAVORITE foods growing up as a kid in america. so comforting! lao parties with all the children would have big pots of hot and aromatic khao poon with pork blood cubes floating around. i'd grab a white bowl of that with the ladle and then another bowl of nam wan, another soup using coconut milk but sweet and colorful. my mom and i think the common singaporean laksa curry is quite similar to khao poon, however the type of noodles and toppings used in both are different.
Mind blowing how you incorporated a mans journey in discovering his roots with a food review show. Literally like how every important novel has an aspect of love in it for it to really shine. Genius. This, along with the Faroe Island episodes were the best storytelling by far.
We need more people and channels like this on RUclips. Please take note, authenticity and what reality truly is, is the future of the world, we need videos that show the REAL world. And that’s what we unconsciously gravitate towards. We are human.

“There’s a reason we left the motherland” made laugh so much! So real, like as much as we fall in love with our culture and where we come from we are still glad and grateful our parents left the place they did after we all grow up hearing horrible things. Just another part of being human.
i have family members who are hmong and laotian. growing up i was always soooooo curious about laos/hmong culture. For many reasons i didnt get many answers that satisfied my curiosity so this is cool to be able to have access to now that im grown. some of the food shown here reminds me of the jokes my cousins would make when talking about eating with their asian side of the family hahaha but mainly it's just a reminder of how far my aunt and her parents have come/survived and how thankful i am that i got to eat some very delicious food thanks to them

Awesome video. I enjoy all of them from an entertainment standpoint, but I think this one was way more important. I think it really meant something to Yia to return to his homeland. You really did something truly special for him with this one. I enjoy all the co-hosts/guides, but this one was truly special.
I've been wanting to know more about Laos ever since watching King of the Hill. This is a really great episode. something ive learned from sonnys videos is that here in the US it seemswe dine on some of the least healthy foods. all the organ meats eaten in other countries provides tons of nutrients. and ten there are all the fresh veggies used, often times wild growing veggies which typically have higher niturient content. everything in the US is processed and full of preservatives.

I am actually surprised that you did not get a panic attack after watching so many unusual and weird things on this documentary.....A lot of people would be running away screaming if they saw a snake or a rat or any one of the many other strange things that are shown in this documentary.....
Ever heard of awkward OVERsharing buddy?! 🤦🏼♂️ Everyone has their challenges and issues (and arguably, MUCH worse than a panic attack FFS, “get the emergency health team to come get me”, FFS! Makes me wonder - haven’t they heard of coping mechanisms where you’re from?! What a waste of resources, I don’t even call an ambulance (even if it’s free) with a *life-threatening* infection, I drive myself, because why divert resources and cost someone else’s life with a heart attack for instance, if there’s an alternative!). Bet you’d be real proud an ambulance got diverted for a panic attack while someone dies of a heart attack because of you?! Most (or at least a large proportion of us) vets (including myself) have PTSD. We don’t go around calling people to “come get us” over a panic attack, we learn coping mechanisms! SMFH! Let’s get real - a panic attack has never killed anyone that isn’t already on the verge of death, as in, any kind of cardiac disruption would finish you off, that’s a tiny minority statistically 🤦🏼♂️. So yeah folks all have issues, EVERYONE, you ain’t special (in fact, most deal with MUCH worse, just that most don’t go whining all over social media on videos completely off-topic! SMH! And if you wanna get upset someone commented something less than positive? (Cause you sound like the type) Perhaps that can be a lesson that when you over share in public, some people will give their unfiltered, honest opinion…grow a spine. Or at least, save yourself the embarrassment of people thinking should grow half a spine! 🥴 Or at least learn that it’s really weird to dish out your stuff like that…the most despicable trait in people IMO is people seeking pity, and this really isn’t the way to get any! 🤦🏼♂️ I almost feel embarrassed for you! I know children more resilient than this! There are MUCH more positive ways to talk about this stuff without sounding like an unequipped child that’s pathetically looking for people’s sorry and pity *cringe*. Hate all you want, you’re the one that posted this nonsense. People are free to reply. Having cheated death multiple times? I have little sympathy, sorry. And that’s SOLELY due to your attitude! Had you not posted “woe poor me BS”, I would have 100% sent a supportive comment instead. But this nonsense?! People who reply with “oh so sorry, poor you nonsense? They just ENABLE and perpetuate your victim complex FFS, and do absolutely nothing to steer towards treatment or positive reinforcement. Quite pathetic! Folks like YOU are the reason reasonable people get treated like shit in health services, because they assume we’re all woefully unequipped to deal with reality and abusing the emergency services, costing the lives of people with legit medical emergencies….yikes! Check yourself! Your actions have a negative impact on others! But you’re so self- cantered that’s probably never occurred to you! Weak and SO selfish!🥴 Not to mention that it probably brings you much negative attention! With that victim-like attitude, you’ll never get anywhere. *Survivors* who keep on truckin’ get places, NOT those with that victim mentality, you’ll just stagnate and wallow in your shite if you don’t shift your attitude, sorry to say…it’s truly sad that people like you live with that weak mindset! You’ve clearly been through little in life, I do hope that in time, you gain experience, perspective and make progress towards an attitude more helpful, yikes yikes yikes!

I absolutely love watching these shows. The wilder the food the better. The most adventurous food I’ve ever tried was Thai giant water beetle. It was ground up with chilis and I put it on my stir fry dinner. Then I served it to my daughter. I didn’t tell her till after dinner. To this day she will not touch my stir fries ❤️🖤❤️🤣🤣🤣
Maybe next season idea, adult children with parent or grandparent go on a food tour of home region. It would be a fun bonding adventure and the stories could be amazing.
Just wanted to say I’ve been a subscriber and watcher for a good 5 years now. It’s good to see this channel still making videos with Sonny. I’m still waiting for him to auction off his headband.
Bats are really amazing fliers. I had to get one out of my cabin this past summer and it was really cool to watch it fly and not hit anything, and find it's way out an open door. Really was kinda cute.

This episode was like a horror movie for animal lovers. 😂 I'm not sure I could eat a bat unless I was absolutely starving and I'd already eaten my own legs. 😅
This is not just a food review channel...This is a cultural documentary that makes me appreciate our planet and I will support this channel till l am an old lady with 33 cats.
@Josh-pk3vd why not cats? Dogs? 🤮 I happen to have anywhere between 7-11 cats at my house because my mother rescues them and sends them off to good people after adoption. Cats don't need as much maintenance and dogs stink and eat like hogs no matter how tiny they are..so yes to 33 🐈
Not sure if home cooks equate to chefs because in the culinary world a chef implies or have formal training whereas anyone can be a cook without any formal cooking skills period. Somehow Sonny seems to like to employ the Hmong an almost unheard of, unknown, and quite marginalized ethnic minority in a lot of his Southeast Asia cuisine explorations. Not that it is a big deal but one could easily argue there are a plethora of other ethnicities; Thai, Lao, Mien, Khmer, Myanmar, Viet etc who have much more exotic dishes than the Hmong to discover and savor.
I don't know why I found this so funny, but I was laughing until I had tears streaming down my face. 🤣😂🤣😂 When Sunny and his guide were speaking with the lady that cooks the bugs, it was explained how some of the ingredients (or bugs) were sourced and shipped in by plane from around the country. Sunny said "By plane?!". So, what I found ENTIRELY too funny was he said "By plane!?" there is a jump cut to a rooster at 14:03, and the rooster looked 100x more surprised than Sunny and his guide were to hear how the ingredients were sourced. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Again, not sure why I found this so funny... but I couldn't stop laughing at it.

Laos is the destination for bizarre food. The bizarre food is not everyday food tho. They eat rice, fish, meat, vegetables just like the rest of us. The bizarre stuff are a delicacy and only eat during special occasions because cant get much.
Huge Fan, I am vegetarian but I just love watching your show, the way you narrate about food is incredible, one suggestion make subtitles available for videos to exact words available to Google it 😊 is that possible ?

Heyy Sonny id love to show you around Lithuania where i was born and raised for a good chunk of my life but i live in the uk now due to rough living in Lithuania the areas i grew up in we didnt have much money we lived off livestock and the things we grew but cities like Kaunas and Vilnius theres alot of traditional foods that will blow your mind.
Thanks so much for this video. Your videos are amazing specially you , and Yia you both are amazing together. Thanks 🙏 visit the people Hmong , and other people in Laos . I will share this video so others people will know about Laos 🇱🇦 , and people in Laos too. We went to Laos a few times. We did not have time to do like you guys did. Keep up the good work ,amazing .❤❤❤this video.
Thank you for visiting Laos and immersing yourself in our beautiful culture and traditions! Your respectful approach and genuine interest are truly appreciated. 🙏 Also, respectfully, Laotian is pronounced lay-ocean, not laoshun. 🙈
Lao not Laotian (French given name) formerly known as Ai Lao people also known as Baiyue, Dai, Kra-Dai, Tai-Kadai, Tai, Thai, Rau, etc, are the ancestors of the Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Taiwanese aboriginal, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipinos people originated from Altaic mountain Mongolia since the Neolithic time.
I absolutely love bats. We used to feed the bats when I was little - threw dog food (kibble) up at them and they would catch it. I would have a hard time eating them because I considered them pets when I was little :(
I wouldn't have the courage to taste half the things presented here. Most of the food here would have been on Fear Factor at one point and I don't mean it as a form of disrespect.

😮BET U GOT BAD FOOD POISENING!!
I love your show, honestly it deserves to be on TV.
I do have one question though, why do you always have a facial expression as if you don't like the food when in fact you do? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sonny Not an exaggeration but this channel's production qualities are seriously hitting TV standards🇧🇸❤️❤️
Has feelings of early Bourdain episodes!!
Better than TV actually
Dude, I was thinking the exact same thing!
Exactly why I have watched every video over and over
Better for sure, I tell everyone about his channel that want to see actual interesting stuff
Very humble series, so educational and hearing Yia Vang get emotional, talking about his family, had me emotionally hooked

Omg thank you for recognizing Hmong villages and the culture! I’m Hmong but not many people acknowledge us or know about us!!
I am also Hmong and some of my elders are from laos
just american here but I was very moved by the story of Hmong and fascinated by how they work as a community to create these dishes. America can learn a lot from this concept and way of life. I hope all these people are blessed!
Known about Hmong all my life.
Yeah sad because Americans don’t acknowledge us HMONG for helping them during war
Now I know about your wonderful people and culture! Thank you for making this world colorful and nice :)

The way Yia talked about his parents was so sweet. Another great video, and a great guest!
Hope you consider it,
Keep up the good work
Cheers
oh really? yep super easy you just have to sit through a million hours of footage and painstakingly translate everything into 1000 different languages then line everything up with each videos vocal audio.... your right wouldn't take much time at all... lol

@@damienwalker4399 It actually doesn't take that long. AI, there are so many caption apps, premiere pro has it built in.
Edit:
Also I am pretty sure they type their narration scripts and dont scribble them on wipes, so there you go you dont even have to sit and type much, just let AI do its trick and integrate the written script.
I really love the exploration of cultural roots Chef Yia added to this series. It makes me want to go back and visit my parents homeland.
We complain about too many things in this country. These people have overcome so much. Beautiful culture, beautiful people ❤
I agree! What a cultural delight it was to experience this with Sonny.
They held on to family, community and a sense of belongings. That's something we've lost.

I love how Chef is so open and is absolutely enjoying the flavours. The makings of a true Chef.
Thank you for visiting Laos, not much people know about us !
I have had the honor and the pleasure of working with many fine people from Laos that talk about your homeland fondly. While I'm not unfamiliar, it was a pleasure to learn more about your peoples rich culinary history here.
In California Laos are badass gangster
Seriously everytime I say I’m Lao people be like what is that😂
Laos are the ancestral homeland of the East Asian and southeast Asian peoples according to hundreds of genetic DNA test results from major labs around the world.
East Asian looking people living in Central Asia countries are mostly Lao and Mongolians descendants particularly in Uzbekistan they came from southern China during a Tang Dynasty.
Exactly, all we know is Miss Loas shouting memes
It's amazing how these cultures adapt to what is available. I don't think it would be as easy for people in the west to do the same. Love that I can live vicariously through Sunny.
so impressive how they split sticks to use as a kebob style and also use those stick fibers as string! were so spoiled over here in the NA we can buy skewers and string for $2 and have enough to make 100. mad respect for Laos

@ 08:06..... Before you begin... This type of experience for any culinary person is huge... The best thing to inspire creativity. Good for you all...
My first boyfriend introduced khao poon to me 🥹 Best moment of my life
Lol, old wives tale: don’t dip sticky rice in khao poon cause it makes for weaker erections. Some Lao boys around here would say that to each other.

i'm so happy you think that way.
The intro made me feel so cool to be Lao, few things shown Ive eaten before, some other things I dont think I would try 😅

Laos sure has a lot to offer on the table. Their cuisine is unlike any other.
Yes, but most of it isn’t very appealing

One of the best episodes not because of the food but by the stories of survival of the Laosians during that senseless war.

i have family members who are hmong and laotian. growing up i was always soooooo curious about laos/hmong culture. For many reasons i didnt get many answers that satisfied my curiosity so this is cool to be able to have access to now that im grown. some of the food shown here reminds me of the jokes my cousins would make when talking about eating with their asian side of the family hahaha but mainly it's just a reminder of how far my aunt and her parents have come/survived and how thankful i am that i got to eat some very delicious food thanks to them

something ive learned from sonnys videos is that here in the US it seemswe dine on some of the least healthy foods. all the organ meats eaten in other countries provides tons of nutrients. and ten there are all the fresh veggies used, often times wild growing veggies which typically have higher niturient content.
everything in the US is processed and full of preservatives.
The United States people should watch how other cultures live. It’s a very humbling experience. These 2 work so well together 😂❤️

Hi! Sonny, your Laotian interpreter is someone close to me. I’m so happy to see her in your video.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
this episode was so good... but 1:43:00 ... WOW!!! that was special!
I don't usually donate but you know each of these episodes should come with links where we can donate directly to the villages featured. I feel like I shared their food with them!
That was one of the nicest looking buffalo I've ever seen T.T I nearly cried, that was a tremendous gift
Thanks for visiting our Hmong villages in Laos with chef Yia.
Great to see both of you exploring with all the yummy food. 🙏🏼❤️
Proud of my people !!!!! Thank you for putting Laos on map!!!

Sonny, u are funny! Very respectful of all cultures, but funny as heck! I'm totally binging on your channel right now. My favs are you and Calvin, but u are a gem! Please keep up the fun and love.
I absolutely love watching these shows. The wilder the food the better. The most adventurous food I’ve ever tried was Thai giant water beetle. It was ground up with chilis and I put it on my stir fry dinner. Then I served it to my daughter. I didn’t tell her till after dinner. To this day she will not touch my stir fries ❤️🖤❤️🤣🤣🤣
its far easier to blame people for problems that have effected them, vs putting the effort involved in to resolving the problem. Strong people.

Always love your combined long videos! Thanks for the great documentaries over the years!
This channel is amazing not just for the food, but history of all the places Sonny goes. I'm Mien, my grandfathers fought in the secret war. Later my parents came over to the states as refugees. Thank you for the look into the past of my family's homeland

This episode was like a horror movie for animal lovers. 😂
I'm not sure I could eat a bat unless I was absolutely starving and I'd already eaten my own legs. 😅
Respect to your Dad, Sonny.
Thank you for sharing.
This is not just a food review channel...This is a cultural documentary that makes me appreciate our planet and I will support this channel till l am an old lady with 33 cats.
Why cats? 🤮
😆😆😆saw this too
Your show is amazing sunny and the team please keep up touching all our hearts through your authentic food history tour🎉❤
But hell no I wouldnt eat the first few dishes 😂
Yia is absolutely adorable! If I was 30 years younger I'd make him mine!

Sonny definitely needs TV series show.

Laos is the destination for bizarre food. The bizarre food is not everyday food tho. They eat rice, fish, meat, vegetables just like the rest of us. The bizarre stuff are a delicacy and only eat during special occasions because cant get much.
7:16 didn't know Sonny served in Vietnam as helicopter pilot 🙃😂
Huge Fan, I am vegetarian but I just love watching your show, the way you narrate about food is incredible, one suggestion make subtitles available for videos to exact words available to Google it 😊 is that possible ?
No one care you’re a vegetarian.🎉
" what the heck there's a fly on my bug " 😂😂😂😂
Wow, Sonny and Yia are so great together!!! ❤❤
thanks for doing this and letting people know about Laos

Great meeting you at the nys fair, hope you enjoyed your stay. Guys he's much taller in person 😂

7:16 That helicopter pilot looks like Sonny
You’re not mistaken
Thank you for visiting Laos and immersing yourself in our beautiful culture and traditions! Your respectful approach and genuine interest are truly appreciated. 🙏
Also, respectfully, Laotian is pronounced lay-ocean, not laoshun.
Bro ate that algae when it was raw just after i saw there was man poop and algaes together living in harmony in the river XD, btw love ur vids
😅
The wvole crab part with via lang was awsome by himself he definitly need his own show doing this
I absolutely love bats. We used to feed the bats when I was little - threw dog food (kibble) up at them and they would catch it. I would have a hard time eating them because I considered them pets when I was little :(
The episodes are so much better when the special guest has the same humor as sonny😂
I wouldn't have the courage to taste half the things presented here. Most of the food here would have been on Fear Factor at one point and I don't mean it as a form of disrespect.
I first learned about Hmong people from the movie "Gran Torino." I learned even more about Hmong people now. This documentary is awesome.
